Rain didn’t dampen the spirit at the Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk This year’s Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk was held on Friday, October 15, and Saturday, October 16, with sold out performances both evenings. Although the weather did not cooperate, community members still ventured out to hear the spooky tales and enjoy themselves. The efforts of many contributed to make the event a success – greeters, guides, actors, Studio 19 Dance Company dancers, servers, and the Ogden Special Police. Joel Humphrey was instrumental in scripting the ghost stories; without his stories, there would be no Ghost Walk. Refreshments were donated by Spencerport Tops and Brockport Wegmans. Hart Gallery27 hosts Ogden artist’s solo exhibit Jeannine Pelusio will be displaying a variety of watercolors and acrylics at her solo exhibit at Hart Gallery27, 27 Market Street, Brockport. The works will be on display during the month of November, with an opening reception on Friday, November 5 from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibit is entitled “emergence,” a reference to what Pelusio describes as, “About becoming, coming out of something. The show represents my work over the past eight years. I’ve always wanted to create, and painting is the opportunity to bring my feelings to the surface.” Pelusio says she is inspired 100 percent by nature. “I love to Jeannine Pelusio paint anything I feel I can portray as an environment in itself. It fills my soul to create. I have to express myself. It has to come out somewhere,
and what works for me is channeling it through my paintings.” Pelusio is owner of Stony Point Studio in Ogden, where she has been teaching drawing and painting classes for the past 15 years to children and adults, as well as teaching classes for homeschoolers. In the coming months, Pelusio will be expanding her instruction, offering classes and workshops out of her studio space at Hart Gallery27. Provided information and photos

Ornamental grasses add lots of wonderful texture, color, and unique movement to the landscape. During autumn, they add a “moody” feel to the garden with rustling sounds as the wind blows through them – very appropriate for this spooky time of year! Before you plant, however, it is important to understand the growth habits of these versatile and beautiful plants. Grasses have growth habits that are either clumping or spreading. According to Clemson University, spreading grasses expand rapidly by aboveground or underground stems. Hilton celebrates a successful Make A Difference Days event Hilton Central School District, HiltonParma Parks and Recreation, Wegmans, Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,I-Greece), and various community partners teamed up to co-host this year’s Make a Difference Days. Make a Difference Days is an opportunity for the community to come together, roll up their sleeves to volunteer, and make neighborhoods they call home a better place. Some of the community events that volunteers participated in included a blood drive in honor of Jordan Ott, a former Hilton student battling cancer, donations for neighbors who are food insecure, clothing donation drives, and fall clean-up in areas around the Village of Hilton. “It truly is such an honor to be able to partner with so many amazing community organizations to make a real, positive impact on our residents,” said Jensen. “In times of such divisiveness, it’s so refreshing to see people from all walks of life come together to do their part to make Hilton a better place for everyone. Thank you to all who showed up, especially our students, and participated in this year’s event.” “The Hilton Community once again showed their passion, pride, and caring

Hilton High School’s girls volleyball team assisted the Hilton Lions Club in collecting food and supplies for the Hilton Parma Emergency Food Shelf as part of Make A Difference Day. A suggested list of items was prepared and given to each person entering the Hilton Tops. Thanks to store manager, Steve Elliott, and the Parma community residents who supported this project, the bus was filled by 2:30 p.m. Lions members then delivered donated items to the food shelf. Section of Peck Road closed for repairs The section of Peck Road in Parma between Dean Road and Hilton-Parma Corners Road (Rt. 259) closed the morning of October 27 and is expected to remain closed for approximately 10 days while the Monroe County Department of Transportation completes emergency culvert repairs.
The damage occurred during the heavy rain and flooding on October 26 and 27. The road will remain open to local traffic only up to the culvert. The detour is Dean Road, West Ridge Road (Rt. 104), and Hilton-Parma Corners Road (Rt. 259). Provided information
Sweden seeks water improvements approval The Town of Sweden has completed the Lake/Redman Road water project significantly under budget, potentially freeing up grant funds to pay for improvements that will be useful for further water expansion projects. The first $2 million of the Lake/Redman Road financing package is a low-interest loan from Rural Development that property owners in the district must pay back over 38 years. The remaining $2.3 million is a grant, which if unused, reverts back to the federal government. The town is seeking permission to install pipe under road crossings in order to maximize the amount of grant money spent here. The project enhancements still must lie within the legal boundaries of the Lake/Redman Road project, even though the improvements may help other future districts.
Sweden is proposing to do crossings at three intersections with Lake Road – at LaDue Road, Beadle Road west, and Swamp Road. It may take a few months to obtain approval from Rural Development and other agencies. The work, if approved, would likely be undertaken in 2022. “We were fortunate to get a large grant-to-loan award ratio on this project,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “It kept the cost to the district property owners lower than many other Rural Development projects. We were also successful in keeping the project under budget. We don’t want to send those grant funds back to Washington, we want to keep them here to help future water expansion.” Provided information

NYSAC supporting veterans with launch of Operation Green Light In advance of the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) announced that it was launching a new initiative called Operation Green Light, to encourage homeowners, businesses, and governments to light up their homes, buildings, courthouses, and bridges green in support of America’s veterans the week of November 7. By shining a green light, participants let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported.
“Operation Green Light is an opportunity to support our veterans and raise awareness about the challenges they face and say that if you’re a vet and you are struggling, please reach out for assistance,” said NYSAC President Martha (Marte) Sauerbrey. “We encourage everyone to join with us in displaying a green light for our veterans and to also reach out to the vets in your life to check in and let them know that you’re with them and that you have their back.”

Individuals are encouraged to share their participation in the initiative by posting pictures of their green lights on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram using the #OperationGreenLight hashtag. Operation Green Light is a collaboration between the NYSAC, the NYS County Executives’ Association, and the NYS County Veteran Service Officers’ Association and is intended to support veterans of all military conflicts, with a special emphasis on the veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan. The campaign also seeks to raise awareness about the challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families. Throughout the month of November, NYSAC will be hosting and promoting educational events to raise awareness about resources available to veterans to help them succeed in civilian life. On November 4, NYSAC will be hosting a webinar on the ETS Sponsorship Program, which helps veterans as they transition back to civilian life by connecting veterans who are finishing their military service with a sponsor who is trained, VA-certified, and dedicated to helping the veterans and their family members. John was a US Air Force veteran and retiree of GM and Sharon was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. John fought a courageous battle against Alzheimer’s/Dementia with Sharon at his side. Then, four days after John’s passing, Sharon suffered a stroke and passed the following week. They were inseparable to the very end. Spencerport Rotary recently collected hundreds of bears and other stuffed creatures and along with dozens of children’s books from the community. The bears were donated to Ogden Police Chief Chris Mears and Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter. They will be given to children in situations like car accidents, fires, domestic disputes, etc., as well as given out at Family Court - anywhere children need a stuffed animal to comfort them. The books will be used in the Rotary’s children’s reading programs. Greece Police Chief resigns On October 25, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich called for the resignation of Greece Police Chief Drew Forsythe and that resignation was received. This comes after Forsythe totaled his police-issued vehicle in a crash at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 21. “Due to the facts available at this time, I feel it is in the best interest of all of our residents that I ask the Chief to step aside so we can continue serving the great residents of the Town of Greece without distraction. The independent investigation will, of course, continue. As I have been made aware of more and more specifics surrounding the incident, I felt this was the most appropriate step I could take. This weekend, with new facts being shared, I made the decision to place the Chief on
administrative leave seeking the guidance of our Labor Attorney as to what steps I could take within the law. Immediately upon his placement on leave, I appointed Deputy Chief Jason Helfer to serve as acting Chief of Police” Supervisor Reilich said in a statement. “We will move forward together, as we have when we have endured countless difficult times as a community. I have always put the needs of our residents as a priority and this decision was not taken lightly. I have to prioritize what is right for our residents and in this case they need to have faith that those of us charged with serving the best interests of the public will do the right thing,” Reilich concluded. GCC launches solar electric programs Genesee Community College has opened enrollment into its newest offering, the Solar Electric Technician Certificate, for the Spring 2022 semester. Requiring a total of 15 credit hours, the program is designed to be completed in as little as one semester. Students can also continue study as a concentration within an Associate in Applied Science degree in Individualized Studies. Careers in renewable energy in the form of solar electric (photovoltaic) grid systems are expanding rapidly throughout New York State, both residentially and commercially. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for solar technology workers is projected to increase 50 percent over the next ten years, which translates into roughly 6,000 new workers.
“The Solar Electric Technician certificate and degree concentration give GCC students a pathway to rapidly growing career opportunities and help our region by meeting changing workforce preparation needs,” said Dr. Kate Schiefen, executive vice president for Academic Affairs. Brockport teachers receive Roy L. Bubb Award Hill School teacher Justin Jackson and Barclay teacher Kelly Young were both awarded with the Mr. Roy L. Bubb School-Based Elementary Teacher Educator Award at the October 19 Brockport CSD Board of Education meeting. Jackson was the 2020 recipient and, due to COVID-19, was presented with the award during the recent board meeting. Young is the 2021 recipient. Jackson and Young were recognized for their outstanding work as elementary school teachers who have supervised a Brockport teacher candidate during the candidate’s student teaching experience. The award recognizes their exemplary teaching performance and their establishment of a teaching-learning environment where student teachers are welcomed, supported, advised, and mentored in a way that prepares them for success as a classroom teacher. NY deer crashes peak in autumn

New York drivers need to buck up this fall and watch for animals on the roads. AAA analyzed New York crash data and found that October, November, and December are by far the peak months for animal crashes, notably deer, in the Empire State. There were 33,956 animal-related crashes statewide in 2020 – the second-highest level in the past decade – that’s equivalent to one animal-related crash every 16 minutes. Monroe County had the third-most crashes in the state with 1,310. Motorists should be especially vigilant after dark as deer crashes often occur outside daylight hours. Crashes are common from 6 to 8 p.m. before the clock changes, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. after the clock changes, during the evening rush when darkness sets in. “Drivers should always be on the lookout for hazards on the road, but the danger of deer increases every fall,” said Elizabeth Carey, director of public relations at AAA Western and Central New York. “Car-deer collisions can be both deadly and costly. Drivers should pay close attention, avoid distractions and scan the road for deer when traveling on area roadways.” AAA offers the following tips for avoiding, or mitigating, deer crashes: •Scan the road, especially the shoulders of the road in front of you. Deer may dash out from the shoulder or wooded areas adjacent to the road. They often travel in herds. •Follow the speed limit. Keeping your speed down will give you more time to respond to unexpected wildlife movements. •Can’t avoid a collision? Apply the brakes firmly and remain in your lane. Swerving sharply to avoid an animal can often cause a more serious crash. Provided information

RWC cross country teams win 7th straight ECC title Roberts Wesleyan College’s men’s and women’s cross country teams are East Coast Conference (ECC) champions once again. Following the cancellation of the 2020 racing schedule, both teams returned this season, determined to build on their continued success in previous ECC Cross Country Championships. On Saturday, October 23, with a home-course advantage, the men’s and women’s teams clinched the ECC Cross Country Championship title, marking a seventh consecutive ECC Championship win for the Redhawks. In the men’s race, eight runners from the Roberts team finished in the top 10 positions with James Betts leading the way for the Redhawks with a finish time of 25:47.3. “It’s nice to keep the streak alive for another year,” said head coach Andrew Dorr. “Our top men ran well, but I was particularly impressed with our younger runners who have improved tremendously this season and who will keep the momentum going following the graduation of their senior teammates. I was also really pleased with our women’s result. It’s been a tough year and a tough season for some, but they showed maturity and focus, and their performance was seemingly unaffected by any of those setbacks.” In addition to earning the coveted ECC Championship title, several Roberts cross country team members received honorary ECC awards and recognitions. First-place finisher Bailey Gostomski was named the ECC women’s Runner of the Year, James Betts was named men’s Runner of the Year, and teammate Owen White was named the ECC Rookie of the Year. This unit uses the classic American play “Twelve Angry Men” to analyze the topic of justice. Mr. Green discussed his experiences as a prosecutor and answered students’ questions about the profession. Opinion Take the time to research ballot propositions I agree with last week’s opinion writer that all New Yorkers should be aware of the ballot propositions we are asked to vote on this November. We enjoy many privileges as American citizens, and we have a responsibility to be informed and exercise our right to vote. Anyone with questions about the propositions can visit a non-partisan website, such as Common Cause New York or Ballotpedia, that will explain them in detail. There is so much hysteria and misinformation around politics, so it is important to use credible sources to research and develop our own opinions. I find that these ballot propositions are fairly straightforward and common sense. Proposition 1 would refine the redistricting process, including capping the number of state representatives so the future legislators can’t create new districts that favor their party. Proposition 2 would allow New Yorkers to take legal action if their rights to clean air and water are violated (a similar law in Montana allowed citizens to file legal challenges over polluted water dumped in a river). Propositions 3 and 4 would have us join 20 other states that allow same-day voter registration, and 34 other states that allow no-excuse absentee voting. Those absentee ballots would be verified in exactly the same way they are when we vote in-person. I urge everyone to be informed and most importantly, vote in the upcoming election.
