Parma Town Park playground to be replaced; community support sought The south playground at Parma Town Park has served the community well, but is aging and wearing quickly to a point where it presents some serious safety concerns. In order to ensure safety of users, as well as enhance quality of life, Hilton-Parma Parks & Recreation came to the determination that removal and replacement of this structure is a necessary priority. With community support, the goal is to build a unique, state-of-the-art, 7,400 square foot playground in its place to be ready for use in the spring of 2021. Playgrounds, like any structure, have a life expectancy. The current playground equipment is 25 years old and inadequate in a number of ways. It may look good at a glance, but according to Hilton-Parma Parks & Recreation, there is a lot that the untrained eye does not see. Over the past several years, band-aid repairs have been made and areas boarded up only for users to remove and expose said areas, putting themselves, and the town at risk.

Artist rendering of the planned playground.

The design will allow for children of all abilities to play together.

The plan is to install new equipment to make the playground a place where children will have the safe, stimulating, inclusive, and healthy opportunities to play, especially during this pandemic. The total budget for the project is $220,000, but to make this plan a reality, some assistance is needed to help offset the cost. The Friends of Hilton-Parma Parks & Recreation are seeking private donations of any amount. Visit the Friends’ Playground Fundraising Page at https://fundrazr.com/ c1kbBe?ref=ab_49noA6 to donate. Contributors will be invited to participate in a Virtual Donor Party where all

supporters will be recognized and have the opportunity to win prizes. A fundraising goal of $25,000 has been set. Any funds raised above and beyond the fundraising goal will go towards additional enhancements, such as accessibility surfacing and shade structures. The Town of Parma is also seeking corporate sponsorship with different suggested sponsorship amounts and a variety of benefits to participating sponsors. Email Parks and Recreation Director Tom Venniro at tvenniro@ parmany.org for more about corporate sponsorship. Provided information and photos

Sunnking raises more than $11,000 to support Camp Good Days On January 26, Brockport-based electronics recycler Sunnking presented an $11,761 check to Camp Good Days and Special Times, a local non-profit organization helping children and families living with cancer. The funds were raised as a part of Sunnking’s 10th annual e-Scrap for Camp fundraiser. Despite a pandemic and months-long layover, the company saw 345 area businesses participate in the electronics recycling donation drive. “We were really worried about having great participation, but the community loves it; they ask about it year-round, and frankly, everybody knows it’s coming and loves to participate,” said Adam Shine, Vice President of Sunnking. “I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Yes, it’s down, but it’s a down year all around, and I think, all things considered, we really pulled through.” Sunnking works with local businesses to recycle unwanted electronics through the donation drive, generating funds for future programs at Camp Good Days and

Special Times. Through its first ten years, e-Scrap for Camp has gifted year-round access for 114 Western New York children. “In a year of so many cancellations, recreations, and pauses, we are beyond grateful for Sunnking’s tremendous support and commitment,” said Lisa Booz, WNY regional director of Camp Good Days & Special Times. “To say this contribution will have an impact on our 2021 programs is an understatement. Sunnking knows our programming continues, and to do that, these funds will be clutch.” Through the free recycling program’s first decade, over five million pounds of electronics have been recycled. The collections have resulted in over $114,000 donated to Camp Good Days by Sunnking and its Buffalo and Rochester-area partners. “I know that there’s a tremendous shortage this year of donors given the pandemic,” said Shine. “I think all not-for-profits are probably hurting and feeling it, and I think that this probably comes at a really crucial time.” Provided information and photo

SUNY Brockport graduate among soldiers killed in Mendon helicopter crash A New York Army National Guard UH-60 medical evacuation helicopter based at the Army Aviation Support Facility at Rochester International Airport crashed on January 20, 2021, in the Town of Mendon, while on a routine training mission, killing all three pilots who were on board. The aircraft and crew was assigned to C Company of the 1st Battalion, 171st General Support Aviation Battalion. The unit trains to perform aeromedical evacuation, and the crew had been conducting night vision goggle proficiency training in the local training area. The incident is under investigation. An Army Safety Investigation team will examine the potential human, material, and environmental factors that may have caused or led to the accident. Killed in the crash were Chief Warrant Officer 5 Steven Skoda, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Christian Koch, and Chief Warrant Officer 2 Daniel Prial.

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Steven Skoda

Chief Warrant Officer 5 Steven Skoda was a 35-year veteran of the Army and the New York Army National Guard. He served in the Active Army from 1985 to 1987. He joined the National Guard in 1987. On Thursday, February 18, and Thursday, February 25, from noon to 1 p.m., local nonprofit Venture Jobs Foundation will host its first-ever Jobs Kitchen Lunch Bites Series, where local small business owners are both the attendees and the speakers. With real advice and real conversations from Rochester business owners, this free, two-part virtual experience is for anyone in our community eager to start or improve their business.

Featured speakers and participants will include Gilberto Vargas (owner of GVIII Barbershops), Jesse Hughson (owner of Skill Hoarder LLC) on February 18, Rosa Marie Curtis (owner of Marvelous Mind Academy), and Assunta Wilson (owner of B.Renewed LLC) on February 25. These local entrepreneurs from diverse fields will share their struggles, successes, and words of wisdom on how each has grown from side-hustle to small business. “The Venture Jobs Foundation played a key role in the growth of my business,” said Jesse Hughson, owner of Skill Hoarder Labs. “In the past few years, I transitioned from working from home as a solopreneur, to building out a full prototyping shop and hiring full-time employees. By realizing I can’t carry everything on my own shoulders, and

with a focus on personal growth, I’ve been able to create space for my business to adapt and grow. There’s a learning curve on putting that into practice, and VJF offers mentorship, funding, and programs like the Jobs Kitchen to help you transition, pivot, and remain successful.” Panelist conversations will include the impact of COVID and racial injustice, pivoting your business and marketing plans, navigating the successes and roadblocks of entrepreneurship, and building an entrepreneurial network. There was an error in the “Seymour Library memorandum signed” article that appeared in the January 24 editions of Westside News. Brockport, not Clarkson, actually contributes the most to the library’s funding, 39.11 percent, followed by Clarkson with 33.66 percent and Sweden with 27.24 percent. We apologize for the error.

Annual campaign promotes reading aloud to children The University of Rochester’s Warner School of Education is running its annual social media campaign to promote the importance of reading. The month-long reading initiative themed “What Are You Reading?” encourages readers to document, share, and tag photos of books read aloud to children, using the hashtags #Read4Luv and #WhatIAmReading. Throughout the month of February, people are also encouraged to share posts and photos of their favorite childhood books. The annual social media campaign promotes the importance of reading aloud to children of all ages, and continues to yield many posts and photos of people sharing books and their enjoyable experiences of reading together. Its aim is to help ignite children’s passion for reading. According to literacy expert Carol Anne St. George, associate professor and director of the literacy education program at the Warner School, reading aloud to children sets them up for a lifelong love of books and reading. “It helps grow their vocabulary and their understanding about the world around them,” says St, George, who launched the annual reading campaign in 2017 and continues to lead this initiative. “The closeness of snuggling up with a favorite book leads to an increase in self-confidence and imagination, and helps children gain a wealth of knowledge from the books they share with an adult. It only takes 15 minutes a day of reading together to nurture this growth.” With Valentine’s Day on the horizon, St. George offers the following seven tips for reading aloud and helping kids to “fall in love” with reading:

1. Make the read aloud an enjoyable experience. Snuggle up, relax, and have fun. Take time with a page, and point out pictures and other print features. Children may want to take an active part by turning the pages when you read or being responsible for reading or saying aloud certain words within the story. 2. Select a wide variety of books, genres, and illustration styles. 3. Read with expression. Use funny voices for the different characters and sounds in the text. 4. Fluctuating your pace – reading faster or slower – can help if your child becomes distracted. Your child may want to draw while you read or act out portions of the story. As your child gets older, increase the length of time reading together and the complexity of the story. 5. Children may want to hear the same story over and over, and that’s fine. Though it might challenge the patience of the adult, children still reap benefits from repeat readings of the same book. 6. Conversations about the story may be helpful to maintain interest. Ask your child to make predictions about what is going to happen next. Make connections between the story and your child’s life. Ask if a character in the story reminds them of someone they know or would like to know. Ask who their favorite character was or how the story could end differently. 7. With family story time, older children can participate by taking a turn reading. Listening to a story together grounds families and offers a shared experience to relate back to. It is a misconception that children outgrow the

benefits of reading aloud. Indeed, all ages can benefit from being read to. The month-long campaign kicks off February 1, 2021. politically speaking

Sweden Republicans nominate 2021 slate The Sweden Republican committee has nominated the following slate of candidates for the 2021 election to be held November 2: Supervisor Kevin G. Johnson; Councilperson Robert Muesebeck; Councilperson Patricia Hayles; Justice Anthony Perry; and Town Clerk Karen Sweeting. Kevin Johnson is in his fourth year as Sweden Supervisor. Previously he served four years as a Town Justice and was a Sweden Councilperson before that. Johnson has a wide breadth of Town government service, including posts on the Board of Assessment Review and the Seymour Library Board of Trustees. An attorney in the Brockport practice of Klafehn Heise and Johnson, he and his wife Marne are raising their four young children in Sweden. Bob Muesebeck is seeking his third four-year term as a councilperson. A native of Brockport, Muesebeck previously served on Sweden’s Board of Assessment Review from 1990 to 2013 and the Brockport Village Board from 1993 to 2000. He has also served as Sweden’s Deputy Supervisor for nearly eight years. A licensed realtor, Muesebeck is a Vietnam veteran and serves as President of the Brockport Area Vets Club. Muesebeck has been married for 48 years to Lee Lee Muesebeck, owner of Our Village Optician. Patricia Hayles is completing her first term as councilperson. A CPA with a private practice in the Brockport area since 1987, Hayles has been active in the community, notably with the Lakeside Health System and Lakeside Foundation. She is also very active in the Nativity Church. As a Sweden Town Board member, Hayles acts as the liaison to the Seymour Library and the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center. Hayles and her husband Bill have lived in Sweden for 29 years, raising their four grown children here. Anthony Perry is seeking his second term as Sweden Town Justice. He is a retired Town of Gates police officer

whose 32-year law enforcement career included time as a patrolman, investigator, and road patrol sergeant. Perry is a native of Port Crane, New York, and moved to Brockport to attend SUNY Brockport, earning a degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Sociology. Perry has three adult children. Karen Sweeting has served as Sweden Town Clerk since 2004. Prior to that, she worked for the Town as a Court Clerk and as the Tax Receiver. She is a member of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks, the NYS Town Clerks Association, Monroe County Town Clerk and Receivers Association, and the NYS Association of Local Government Records Officers. She and her husband Rob have four sons. Over the past four years, the team has undertaken the largest infrastructure projects in town history and lowered the total town tax levy. Led by Johnson, the board has improved communications, overhauled codes and policies, and maintained accessible town services during the pandemic. If elected, the group plans to continue its promise to make Sweden a place residents are proud to call home. Provided information
