Orleans County Master Gardeners offer “Master Your Garden” class series Master Gardeners in Orleans County have finalized the lineup for their monthly “Master Your Garden” class series. Like most organizations, Master Gardeners had to adapt and alter their typical event schedule the last two years due to the pandemic. Last year they launched their “Master Your Garden” series for the first time ever – a monthly class on the first Saturday of each month featuring various gardening topics and taught by Master Gardener Volunteers or Extension staff. The series turned out to be a success as many public participants were looking for in-person learning opportunities to support existing garden hobbies or explore new gardening niches. Master Gardeners decided to return to this style of programming for the 2022 event year and have developed a robust lineup of new topics. “I really like this new format of offering classes for the public,” said Master Gardener Brenda Radzinski who taught a class on roses in last year’s MYG lineup and will lead “Natural Easter Egg Dyes” in April this year. “I think the Master Your Gardener series is a more diverse style of educational outreach. It gives

us the opportunity to offer a wider range of topics to those interested.” The first class of the 2022 series will be on “Pollinators” on February 5 at 10 a.m. in the Trolley Building at the Orleans County 4-H Fairgrounds. The class will feature honeybees and their native counterparts, as well as other pollinators that are vital to the life cycle of most flowering plants. Master Gardener Chairperson Erica Joan Wanecski will open the program with an introductory presentation on “Mutualism – Partnerships in Nature,” discussing how different animals, insects, and plants have evolved together in mutually beneficial relationships. The headline presentation on “Pollinators” will be taught by Geri Hens, a Master Beekeeper, tenured environmental educator, and owner of Hens Honeybee Farm in Niagara County. Initially approached to do a presentation specifically on Honeybees, Hens wanted to make sure the native pollinators that often go unnoticed received their share of attention and appreciation. Her presentation will be an in-depth conversation about the roles of insects and their habitats, the threats facing our local ecosystems, and things homeowners can do to mitigate those threats. Hens

brings decades of experience working with pollinators of all kinds, and she is backed not only by her formal credentialed training in beekeeping and environmental education but also her personal reflections from over thirty years of observing the ever-changing environment and its impacts. The rest of the class series will feature topics such as vermicomposting (composting with worms), selecting the best mulch for your garden, local watershed protection, native plants and more. For the full class schedule, see the Orleans County CCE website at http://orleans.cce.cornell.edu/. All classes are donation-based; community members can pay what they are able, with proceeds going to support other educational projects put together by the Master Gardeners, like the returning Seed Bank project, a new Vegetable Variety Trial Garden, and tabling materials at local events. “Our Master Gardener Volunteers are such an experienced bunch of gardeners with really varied areas of interest,” said Katie Oakes, coordinator of the Master Gardener program and Horticulture Educator at Orleans County CCE. “They aren’t afraid to try new things, and when they have successes are so willing to share their

This MYG class series is the perfect outlet to extend those skills and experiences to our community members.” For more information on this or any other Master Gardener event, contact Katie Oakes, at 585-798-4265 ext 125 or by email at klo54@cornell.edu. Jesse was in seventh grade when he started bowling on the varsity team at age 12. During his first year playing varsity, he bowled a 299 game for a series of 785. Income tax filing season is underway. The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has begun processing income tax returns, including those submitted using the Free File software available on the Tax Department website, https://www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile/. Those whose 2021 income is $73,000 or less can file both their federal and New York State returns at no cost through the Tax Department website using Free File. Nearly 255,000 taxpayers used this software last year, saving them a combined $51 million in tax preparation fees. “I encourage all eligible taxpayers to take advantage of Free File—a secure and efficient way to file and reap significant savings,” said Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “Each year, more New Yorkers discover and extol the benefits of this service.” Provided information

Arrests on SUNY campuses highlight the expanded mission and risk to State University Police The Police Benevolent Association of New York State praised the heroic actions of eight New York State University Police members who responded to 911 calls last week. The first call came from a female SUNY Brockport student on January 24 who was being held against her will in her dorm room by a man with a gun who is accused of menacing her with the firearm, strangling her, and suffocating her with a pillow. The man, who is not a SUNY Brockport student, was arrested, arraigned and taken to the Monroe County Jail. The second call came on January 25 when one male SUNY Albany student is accused of stabbing another following a verbal altercation. The accused in the SUNY Albany attack was arrested, arraigned, and is currently in the Albany County Jail. Since the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007 the State University of New York has taken proactive measures to ensure that New York State University Police Departments have the training and equipment to respond to violent incidents on campus – including training in active shooter response and other acts of violence and terrorism. The New York State University Police Officers who responded to these potentially deadly confrontations were Officer Dennis Schultz, Officer Nick Pagano, Officer Mike Petritz, and Lieutenant Michael Johnson from SUNY Brockport and Officer Chris Yankowski, Officer Steven Scoons, Officer Chad Silverman, and Lieutenant Jeremy Eveleth from SUNY Albany. Christopher Lacosse, PBA of New York State Board Member and University Police/Investigators Director, said,

“Thanks to popular entertainment, the public often views campus safety as focused on underage drinking, hijinks, and student parking. The reality is college campuses are a microcosm of modern society and the dangers we all face in our day-to-day lives are finding their way to our campuses. For this reason, our officers have trained and developed the capability to respond to violent and tactical situations such as the incidents that occurred on the SUNY Brockport and SUNY Albany campuses. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors have the right to feel safe from violence and harassment on our state and community campuses, and thanks to the immediate and overwhelming response of our officers the accused were taken into custody and tragedy was averted.” Provided information

Assembly members call for passage of the Inflation Relief & Consumer Assistance Plan Members of the Assembly Minority Conference held a press conference on January 24 calling for the passage of the Inflation Relief & Consumer Assistance Plan (A.8481) in response to rapid and ongoing inflation faced by New Yorkers throughout the last year. The proposal would suspend state sales tax on several everyday goods such as gasoline, cleaning products, and prepared foods for two years. Gas prices have risen over a dollar within the last year alone, while household and everyday items have risen steadily in price over the last several months. “The hardships of the pandemic, coupled with a 40-year high inflation rate, has caused extreme financial burden for middle-class families across the state,” said Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,I-Greece). “It’s critical we take action to do our part to alleviate some of the hardships our resi-

dents are facing. Suspending sales tax for two years will help provide some relief and help New Yorkers get back on their feet.” “Inflation is an economic force that impacts the working class more than anyone else, erasing the impact of wage increases as people find their paychecks buying less and less every week,” said Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,IBatavia). “For those who rely on fuel to heat their homes, these price increases mean less money put aside for college and emergency funds, fewer family nights out, and for some, choosing between heating their homes or filling up their vehicles. Passing this legislation would have a direct and immediate impact on the economic well-being of New Yorkers and restore the power of their hard-earned paychecks.” Provided information

Brockport kicks off Winter Serenades with the JAY Trio on February 6 Brockport’s Winter Serenades music series begins with the JAY Trio at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 6, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, corner Main and State Streets. Cellist Jennifer Carpenter and violinist Aika Ito, both RPO musicians, will perform with pianist Yoshiko Arahata. Dr. Arahata teaches at the Hochstein School, Alfred University, and Nazareth College. The acoustics at St. Luke’s make it an excellent venue for the three musicians to perform the solo, duet, and trio pieces they’ve selected. The program’s varied repertoire will include works by Clara Schumann, Chen Yi, Benjamin Britten, Camille SaintSaens, and Johann Sebastian Bach. There is no charge for any of these informal presentations. Families are encouraged to attend and to stay after for an opportunity to “Meet the Artists.” Current COVID guidelines will be strictly followed – masks are required for all attendees. The church is spacious, allowing for social distancing, and the performance will also be live streamed on YouTube for those who prefer to attend virtually from home. Jennifer Carpenter is an experienced performer in a diverse range of musical styles and ensembles. She is a tenured member of Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and her past orchestral experiences include performances in the Juilliard Orchestra, where she served as principal cellist, Aspen Music Festival and School, where she served as a fellow in the conducting academy orchestra, and Cayuga Chamber Orchestra. As a dedicated chamber musician, she has performed at festivals around the world. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree from Oberlin Conservatory and Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School. Carpenter is an enthusiast of historical performance, and studied baroque cello and viola da gamba. She is also an advocate of new music, frequently collaborating with living composers, and performing premieres. She is currently a member of the faculty at Eastman Community Music School and The Hochstein School. She also coordinates chamber music ensembles at the University of Rochester and serves as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Eastman School of Music, where she is working towards a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and is a candidate for the Performer’s Certificate. Aika Ito, a native of Tokyo, Japan, joined the first violin section of the RPO in September 2014. Previously she was a member of the Canton Symphony Orchestra and the Akron Symphony Orchestra, and has participated in several summer festivals. She is a violist of the Salaff Quartet, formed by RPO musicians in 2014, which has been an ambassador quartet for the Society of Chamber Music in Rochester since 2017. She plays the baroque violin as a member of Ogni Sorti, formed in 2016. The artists

feel passionate about sharing early music with the greater Rochester community. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Toho School of Music in Tokyo and earned an artist diploma at the Cleveland Institute of Music. Yoshiko Arahata enjoys a multifaceted career as an internationally-active pianist, educator, improvisor, and composer. Her solo engagements have taken her to stages throughout the US, Asia, and Europe and she has made concerto appearances with both traditional orchestras and contemporary ensembles. A sought-after collaborator and chamber musician, she has performed with the renowned violinist Charles Castleman, musicians from Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and more. She holds piano performance degrees from the Eastman School of Music (BM, DMA) and Northwestern University (MM). Rochester ’s City Newspaper praised Arahata for “playing with a vibrancy not often heard” and staging that “isn’t just a standard recital presentation” for her 2020 Rochester Fringe Festival production of a contemporary opera and art songs with the acclaimed mezzo-soprano Jessica Ann Best. Additionally, she frequently collaborates with Mariah Steele of Quicksilver Dance. Prior to teaching at Hochstein, she taught at SUNY Geneseo, Nazareth College, Eastman School of Music (collegiate and community divisions), Northwestern University, and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. BIG/Bold exhibition features artists who make statements with their art Up next at the Tower Fine Arts Center Gallery is BIG/ Bold, a national invitational exhibition in which the artists’ works are large, confrontational, and unapologetic. The show will run from February 1 through March 6, with an opening reception scheduled for February 1 from 4 to 6 p.m. The gallery is located at 180 Holley Street, Brockport, and the exhibit is free and open to the public. Gallery hours for this exhibition are Monday through Friday, noon to 5 p.m., and Sunday, 1 to 4 pm. SUNY Brockport’s up-todate COVID-19 prevention guidelines can be found at the ticketing website (fineartstix.brockport.edu), the Fine Arts Series Facebook page, and at brockport.edu/coronavirus/ spring_2022. Compliance with campus protocols is required in order to attend any performances or events. Participants in the exhibition include Lisa Bryson (San Diego, California), Sergio Gomez (Chicago, IlinoisL), Christopher Troutman (Beaumont, Texas); and Bill Wolff (Salisbury, Maryland). Troutman explains how he draws and paints “the human figure in contemporary urban settings, which I depict from unfamiliar vantage points, imbuing everyday subject matter with renewed dynamism. The vantage points are augmented in polyptychs as a means to subdivide images

into multiple parts, to fracture space and time, as well as act as panels to tell stories, borrowing from art history and contemporary comics.” In keeping with the theme of the show, much of Troutman’s work measures more than three feet by four feet. His explanation for why he works in that outsized format is that it puts “the artwork and audience in the same immediate space. The works’ large

Inaudible by Lisa Bryson

size exaggerates the scale of figures and environments, inspiring an overwhelming mood, through which I hope the memories that initiated the artwork can achieve a similar resonance with viewers.” Wolff ’s sculptural works, which can measure more than 10 feet wide, “reflects a consistent conceptual origin and a focused concern for the material, gesture, form and balance. All of the materials I use have a previous history. The surface of the work and material reveals this history. My work in wood is carved, hollowed and assembled from sections of trees otherwise destined to be firewood, a variation of the traditional Japanese yosegi zukuri process. Essentially, it permits large-scale wood sculpture with non-cylindrical forms, reduced weight and a controlled surface, largely free from the concerns associated with regular, seasonal wood movement. Each work is initiated with a chainsaw, jointed with chisel and plane, hollowed out with an assortment of tools, carved with gouges, charred with a torch, scraped and sanded, leafed with metal, and then scraped and drawn on. Tool marks from every stage are visible atop the grain of the wood and are a reference to the material, the history of making, and image.” Provided information and photo

Opinion Support your local volunteer firefighters New York State has made it possible for local fire districts to adopt a resolution to allow volunteer firefighters to obtain a 10% exemption for their fire district taxes. This is a small token of appreciation for the time they invest in the fire district and the risks they take in protecting our community. If they receive this exemption, it will shift a very small portion of the fire district tax levy to the other residents in the district. I was the Brockport Fire District Treasurer (I have not been a firefighter) and have seen the commitment of our firefighters. I encourage residents of the Brockport Fire District to attend the public hearing on February 7 at 6:30 p.m. in Fire Station #3 located at 191 West Avenue. A Brockport Fire District legal notice in the January 23 issue of the Westside News stimulated me to write this letter. Other fire districts will be holding public hearings, and I encourage you to support this measure in those districts and attend the public hearings. This will be a good way for residents to show their support for our local firefighters.

point, we’re not doing [it] solely because of the pandemic, but rather simply because we love it and because it’s become a wonderful and integral part of our life!” One of the things that most fascinates Dubin about jazz is that “you can literally hear its entire history; since jazz is only a little over 100 years old, it’s essentially all been documented on recordings. Sadly, we’ll never get to hear a recording of Beethoven playing his own music, but you can hear recordings of so many of the great musicians who actually created jazz.” Catching the jazz bug from her jazz pianist uncle, Dubin cites jazz legends such as Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Marian McPartland, and Nina Simone as influences. With a century of jazz as a base, Dubin also revels in what she calls “mashups,” in which she imbues “Mozart steeped in the history of jazz piano; Beethoven welded with American songbook gems; Ellington with Chopin; Debussy with Gershwin; Ravel with Rodgers and Hammerstein tinged with Latin; Cole Porter with Bill Evans – all reinvented, re-imagined, and forged into very personal statements.” Having met Guerrero while they were both performing on Holland America Line cruise ships, lucky to “play music every night and see the world during the day,” Dubin feels “there’s no other musician in the world that I feel more comfortable and confident playing with, or feel more trusting with, than Antonio… We’ve been playing together for over 10 years now, so we know each other’s musical personalities like a book…We both feel that our musical concept together has gotten more solid with each passing year. Antonio really gets ‘inside’ each piece of music that we play and puts so much of his own unique vision into them, especially when it comes to our own compositions and arrangements.” On the subject of jazz in general, Dubin wants to “encourage everyone to listen to as much jazz music as possible, and to take a little time to really sit and listen intentionally, rather than just having it on in the background. You’ll make many amazing discoveries along the way, and I think you’ll find a lot to love!” Provided information
