No decision made yet on 2021 Spencerport Carnival The Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association would like to update the community on the status of the annual carnival. We are grateful for the many messages from people who are anxiously waiting to hear whether we will be having an event this year. Throughout the pandemic, we could not be more appreciative of our community’s generous support and understanding. The Firemen’s Association relies heavily on this event as one of our largest and most important fundraisers. We spend months preparing for the carnival and the funds raised during this event are used to help us maintain our 100% volunteer department. Throughout the past few months, the leadership of the Association has been in conversation with our ride provider, Hammerl Amusements, on the feasibility of holding a carnival this year. No decision has been made at this time, however,

given the current pandemic restrictions that are still in effect state-wide, the Firemen’s Association is exploring other fundraising options in the event that the carnival cannot proceed this year. A decision to host a carnival will be made at the end of April and we are hopeful that restrictions and guidance surrounding the pandemic will be favorable to allowing this widely attended community event. We will keep everyone updated through our social media platforms and our website. Thank you for your continued support for the members of your 100% volunteer fire department. Please be safe, and stay healthy. Chris Damon, President Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association

Bridge closure committee forming in Brockport Beginning in the summer of 2022, the Main Street lift bridge in downtown Brockport will be closed for repairs for up to 18 months. The Village of Brockport is looking for people with creative ideas to serve on a planning committee tasked with drawing visitors downtown and promoting the business district on both sides of the canal during the bridge closure. Appointments to the “Bridging the Closure Committee” will be made in May 2021, the committee is expected to begin meeting in early summer 2021. Prior to the formation of the committee, the organizers will be meeting with Fairport and Spencerport individuals who have already been through the bridge closure experience. The pandemic situation permitting, it is hoped that by June committees will be able to meet in person. Interested persons should fill out a position interest

Byron-Bergen Math League finishes top of growing division Byron-Bergen’s defending interscholastic mathematics champions have done it again, but bigger than before. Led by veteran coach, math teacher Jon DiLaura, the Bees placed first in three of four competitions against 14 other teams. This is the first year that the Genesee Region has combined both north and south districts, doubling the number of teams. “Byron-Bergen’s math team has done incredibly, all season long,” said DiLaura. “We have some new people; we have our veterans. They’ve all worked hard.” Like many team competitions, health and safety restrictions have altered the math league season. “We are used to going to Genesee Community College and taking the test all together, with all the different schools,” said senior Hope Her-

som, a four-year veteran of the team. “We had to do a lot of interaction online but it’s cool that we could still get together,” said Sara Goodman, also a senior and four-year veteran of the team. Over a series of rounds, the competitors solve math questions in the advanced topics such as logarithms, trigonometry, systems of equations, and matrices. The test results are tabulated based on a point system. The Byron-Bergen team completed the season with a total of 464 points. “Everyone on the team works really hard and puts in the practice,” said Hersom. “When the competition comes around, we all score well and place first.” Provided information

The past year has uncovered many selfdiscoveries. Marilyn Fegyo, a resident of Westwood Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community in North Chili, learned that she enjoys coloring, a lot! She has completed over 1,000 drawings and coloring projects since the pandemic began. Marilyn’s knack for art emerged at a young age when she learned knitting, sewing, and embroidery from a family member. She’s continued to take art classes throughout her life, including painting, charcoal, and pottery. When the quarantine first began, Marilyn’s niece suggested that she find a way to stay engaged throughout her day. In addition to reading the Bible cover to cover multiple times, she decided to take up coloring. Marilyn has mailed the finished pieces to her brothers and has gifted them to her best friend, Rose, as well as to Westwood Commons staff for their children. She also gifts her artwork to staff and residents on their birthdays. The pictures cover the walls of

her room and each day she chooses three new pieces to display on her door. “When I choose a picture, I know exactly who it’s going to go to and I will tailor it to that person,” she said. “I’ll choose a picture based on that person’s likes and dislikes and use their favorite colors to complete it.” Marilyn puts thought into every single piece. “She takes great pride in her gallery and the art she does,” said Westwood Commons Activities Director Brenna Orlop. “She plans out the pictures for her door display in advance. She already has Easter planned out!” For Marilyn, it’s been a labor of love that has helped her stay positive through a long year. “It’s relaxing to make beautiful things,” she said. “I enjoy focusing on making it perfect, and that focus takes the stress away.” Provided information and photo

Parma Hilton Historical Society Museum reopening April 11 The Parma Hilton Historical Society Museum, located at the north end of the Parma Town Park Complex, will open for the summer season on Sunday, April 11. A number of display improvements were made between November 2019 and April 2020, but COVID restrictions kept the museum closed until just before Labor Day last year. Despite the closure, a large number of new artifacts were donated to the museum. Through its Memorial Fund, the museum was also able to acquire another B. Aylsworth Haines painting. This one, titled “Asters,” was shown at the 33rd Annual Exhibition of the Rochester Art Club at the Memorial Art Gallery in June of 1916. Mr. Haines was a local artist of some note from the late 1800s through the 1930s, and according to a partial list that was discovered,

he did over 100 paintings. In addition to his artwork, he was also commissioned to paint the street signs in the village of Hilton, one of which is on display at the Hilton Village Historian’s office. During the winter of 2019-2020, volunteers also built a demonstration section of timber frame to use as the entryway into the museum’s agriculture display room, which has such items as a Hercules hitmiss engine, donated by Joe Lee and his family, and also a two-person sleigh that was originally owned by the Berridge family on Curtis Road. The museum will be open on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m., with the exception of federal holidays. Admission is free. Visitors are asked to adhere to the usual COVID-19 protocols of face masks and social distancing. Provided information and photo

Educational equine webinar series offered The New York-based Equine Collaborative International (ECI), Animal Wellness Action, the Animal Wellness Foundation, Monty Roberts, Dr. Maria Katsamasis, Frank Lovato, Jr., and Bernice Ende have teamed up to produce an equine educational webinar series. Each year including 2020, ECI has held an in-person March Meet-Up in Western New York to raise scholarship funds for young equine enthusiasts in need, but in 2021 is replacing the annual in-person event with this webinar series in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are very excited to have this great lineup of presenters for our first webinar series,” said Phyllis Jensen, President of Equine Collaborative International, LLC. “The diversity of their topics allows us a truly ‘something for everyone’ situation as these dedicated horse people share many years of expertise and experience.” “We’re elated to offer such an outstanding panel of world-class speakers that will help Equine Collaborative International live up to its name by making this series available around the globe,” said Marty Irby, a Director of Equine Collaborative International, LLC and Executive Director at Animal Wellness Action. “Horse enthusiasts will have an opportunity to ask questions and our iconic American equines will be represented by one of the most diverse and talented panels assembled since the COVID19 pandemic hit.” The first webinar was held on March 24. The series con-

ment Review for 23 years prior to that. He also served as a Brockport Village Trustee from 1993 through 2000. “Bob carried a heavy load of liaison responsibilities over the past seven years, including the highway department and town park,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “He also worked on the mundane tasks of governance, leading the committees to write and re-write the Solar Farm Law, Battery Energy Storage System law, and updates of the Comprehensive Plan. When he left the Board, he was the longest-serving member, and all of us learned a great deal from him. He will be greatly missed.” On March 23, the Town Board appointed Gary Sullivan to replace Muesebeck as a councilperson. Sullivan retired in 2018 as a Rochester City Police Department investigator in the major crimes division. His 36-year law enforcement career included three years at the beginning with the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department. Sullivan and his wife, Darlene, live in Sweden Village and have three adult children. Sullivan’s Gary Sullivan appointment is through December 31, 2021. He will be on the ballot in November for a full four-year term that begins January 1, 2022. Provided information and photos

Public input invited for Finger Lakes National Heritage Area Feasibility Study The National Park Service invites public input on a study to determine the feasibility of designating the Finger Lakes region of New York as a national heritage area. The 90-day comment period for the Finger Lakes National Heritage Area Feasibility Study will extend through June 1, 2021. More information about the study is available at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/FingerLakes. “Input from the public regarding the creation of a national heritage area in the Finger Lakes is critical to the study process. We also hope to learn more about the region from the people who know it best,” said Allen Cooper, regional chief of planning, National Park Service. “The information, interest and inquiries we receive from the public help inform our work as we assess the Finger Lakes as a potential National Heritage Area.” The Finger Lakes National Heritage Area Feasibility Study was authorized by the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act of 2019, which directed the Secretary of the Interior to evaluate the natural, historic, cultural, educational, and recreational resources of the Finger Lakes. The study will assess if it is nationally worthy of recognition, conservation, interpretation, and continuing use; through designation as a national heritage area. The legislation identified the following counties to be considered as part of the study: Cayuga, Chemung, Cortland, Livingston, Monroe, Onondaga, Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins, Wayne, and Yates. The feasibility study will also assess the demonstrated support of the community including businesses, residents, nonprofit organizations, and appropriate local, state and federal agencies. The study’s assessment, along with any recommendations from the Secretary of the Interior, will be reported to Congress. The study will assess the region’s unique and important American stories, how they can be experienced by the general public, and how a potential new national heritage area would be organized by a coordinating entity,

if one were to be designated by Congress. The study is expected to run through 2023. The NPS has prepared the following materials to inform the public about the study and to solicit public comment: •An online “Story Map” explaining the study’s purpose, authorities, and a summary of resources within the 14 county study area the NPS’ research has identified thus far can be found here: https://arcg.is/0eCKrj. •A draft narrative summary of the NPS’ research and a detailed list of resources in table format can be found on the project website at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/FingerLakes. •The public comment submission portal can be accessed from the Story Map’s “Comment Now” buttons for the project website’s “Open For Comment” tab. Submissions by mail can be sent to: National Park Service, Denver Service Center, Attn: Finger Lakes NHA / Charles Lawson, 12795 West Alameda Parkway, Denver, CO 80228. As a strategy for community-led conservation and development, national heritage areas are places where historic, cultural, and natural resources combine to form cohesive, nationally important landscapes. If designated by Congress, national heritage areas are managed by local coordinating entities that accomplish goals of interpreting the heritage area history and traditions through partnerships with governments, organizations, businesses, and individuals. National heritage area coordinating entities collaborate with communities to determine how to make heritage relevant to local interests and needs. A national heritage area is not a unit of the National Park System, nor is any of its land owned or managed by the NPS, unless such land was previously set aside as a unit of the National Park System. The creation of a new national heritage area does not change existing private property rights. Learn more about the NPS National Heritage Areas program here: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/heritageareas/index.htm. Provided information

Comments NYFB praises passage of Farm Workforce Modernization Act New York Farm Bureau (NYFB) commends the bi-partisan passage of the Farm Workforce Modernization Act in the U.S. House. This includes the support of many members of New York’s congressional delegation on both sides of the aisle, and we now call on the U.S. Senate to support the bill that moves the discussion forward for much needed agricultural labor reform. Access to farm labor remains a priority for our members, and this bill goes a long way towards addressing the shortage of agricultural workers that limits our farmers’ ability to plant, harvest, and care for livestock. In addition, it will include dairy farms in the federal guest worker visa program as well as address the needs of migrant workers who are already in this country. Their contributions to our food system are invaluable and should be recognized through the passage of this bill. NYFB continues to advocate for some changes to improve the legislation, including adjusting the cap on yearround guest worker visas, ensuring a fair and competitive wage rate, and creating an employment threshold that accurately reflects an agricultural workday. Regardless, this legislation would take a significant step to ensure that New York agriculture is positioned to have a sustainable and reliable workforce that will support our food supply and rural economy. David Fisher, President New York Farm Bureau

Westside News - West Edition - March 28, 2021 9

New online training focused on needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA), in partnership with the New York State Development Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC), and Boston University School of Social Work’s Center for Aging and Disability Education and Research (CADER), have announced a new online course designed to help the aging network workforce better understand what intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) are and how they impact a person’s life from birth to older age. The disability awareness training has been added to NYSOFA’s first-in-the-nation online training academy, offered by BU CADER, for aging services professionals in New York State as part of a $300,000 grant from DDPC. The online training academy currently offers more than 20 certifications and trainings from BU CADER for aging services staff statewide, enabling them to enhance their professional qualifications and deepen their expertise to further support the needs of older New Yorkers. The disability awareness training course will expand the training academy’s offerings by focusing on understanding the needs and desires of individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities, including how IDDs are manifested (physical, emotional, mental, and social), and how they may or not impair a person’s ability to live independently while enjoying all of society’s benefits. The aging services network can provide guidance, support, and advocacy for people with IDDs and those who care for them. The course will help aging professionals gain knowledge, develop skills, and promote values of inclusivity so that those with IDDs and their caregivers are not viewed as a separate or different population from the older people they typically serve. This course will also offer continuing education credit for social workers in New York State. Over the past decade, New York State has experienced an unprecedented increase in its older population. There are currently more than 4.6 million adults aged 60 and over

in the state; that number is expected to increase dramatically over the next 20 years. Studies have indicated that the life expectancy for adults with IDD has also grown due to medical advances and improved living conditions in recent decades. The number of adults in the U.S. with IDD age 60 years and older is projected to grow to 1.2 million by 2030. Rapid changes in health care and long-term care have also propelled the need to address the challenges faced by a growing number of older adults needing assistance to live independently. As New York State works on payment reforms under value-based payments; continues to rebalance long-term care; and builds age friendly communities focused on addressing social determinants of health, ensuring that the network of aging services professionals have access to standardized, skills-based training is critically important in addressing older adults’ diverse needs while also demonstrating to payers and the general public that the aging services workforce is highly trained, skilled, and certified. In 2016, New York State became the first state in the nation to offer validated, skills-based, online certificate programs and training for care managers and other practitioners serving older adults and people with disabilities. Developed in partnership with the Association on Aging in New York and BU CADER, the standards for the Care Management Certification Program are among the highest in the nation. Now in its sixth year, the program is designed to address the knowledge, skills, and values essential for effective care management practice and to provide a statewide, standardized training program. To date, upwards of 900 care managers have completed this mandatory program to enhance the qualifications for professional care managers who serve older adults across New York State. Shopping Day Trips... Hilton, the little village with the big heart! The village we know as Hilton was originally known as Unionville when it was first incorporated in 1885. The name was changed in 1896 to honor the former pastor of the village’s Baptist church, Reverend Charles Hilton. In 1965 a fire destroyed most of the Hilton business district, but it was rebuilt. Hilton is best known for its famous festival – The Hilton Apple Fest – where people visit from all over to celebrate its apple growing heritage. As spring brings milder weather and blooms to the apple trees’ greenery, it also makes for a great time to visit the charming village. Here are just a few unique places to visit while in Hilton. The Coffee Corner – A full service coffee bar right in the heart of Hilton. 32 Main Street

The Hilton Diner – A great spot for breakfast, brunch, or lunch. Open 7 days a week. 54 Hovey Street

Live theater returns to OFC Creations Theatre Center

Are You Looking to Grow Your Business or Organization?

New York State recently announced live public theater events can reopen starting April 2, 2021, for audiences to attend with safety measures in place. OFC Creations Theatre Center will be one of the first Rochester theaters to launch in-person performances to high demand. OFC Creations Theatre Center officially reopened in July 2020 for summer camp programs. OFC took over the new space at 3450 Winton Place, in April and spent the initial lockdown fully renovating the 11,000 square foot performing arts center from floor to ceiling, including 260 brand-new fixed theater seats. Since launching with summer camps in July and afterschool arts programs for kids in the fall and winter, OFC has had over 1,700 students learning musical theater and putting on shows with no issues related to COVID-19. “We know there is a safe way to continue with the arts,” says Eric Vaughn Johnson, Executive Director. From April 9 to May 8, OFC Creations Theatre Center will begin live in-person professional theater performances. All events will be limited to 100 attendees with social distancing between parties. Hand sanitizer stations are positioned throughout center which is HEPA filtrated, and masks are currently required except while eating or drinking. Attendees will have at least four seats between them and another party, and when possible, will receive their own row in the center. Food/bar service will be brought to attendees’ seats to limit congestion at the bar. The center will be thoroughly cleaned and before and after each event. If reserved seating is required, assigned seats will be given to audiences upon arrival. Productions included in the opening series are: •Love Letters – Friday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. Diane Chevron and Allan O’Grady Cuseo star as Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner. Their characters, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards.

Miss Richfield 1981 is a drag queen legend, and this will mark the third year OFC has brought her into Rochester. All shows have three options on ticket pricing. General Admission is the normal cost for tickets to attend the show live in-person. The Theater Supporter and Theater Hero tickets are higher priced, but the extra cost helps keep OFC’s lights on while at such a reduced capacity. Tickets can be purchased online at www.OFCCreations. com or by calling 585-667-0954. Provided information and photos

sports & recreation RDGA, Deerfield to welcome state’s top high school golfers Many of the top interscholastic high school golfers from around New York State and the Rochester area will visit Deerfield Golf & Country Club in Brockport for the first-ever RDGA New York High School Invitational, set for Saturday and Sunday, June 5 and 6. Working with the Rochester Sports Commission and Section V Athletics, the Rochester District Golf Association is inviting a field of up to 84 high school golfers to Deerfield for an event that will provide an opportunity to meet their peers in a competitive environment.

“Section V Athletics is looking forward to working with the RDGA to offer this event to high school athletes,” says Kathy Hoyt, Executive Director of Section V Athletics. “The RDGA has been so supportive of Section V golf over the years and this event allows us to show our appreciation and support.” The 2021 RDGA New York High School Invitational welcomes any interscholastic high school golfer from any of the 11 athletic sections in New York State - boys and girls between the ages 13 to 18 - to apply to play in this tournament. Project honors those making a difference in the lives of young children The New York State Association for Infant Mental Health (NYS-AIMH) recently launched PROJECT: BRIGHT LIGHTS, a recognition program to honor those making a difference in the lives of young children. NYS-AIMH is a professional organization and home for specialists across disciplines whose work is relationshipbased and supports the developmental and emotional well-being of infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and their families. Its mission is to strengthen and promote social and emotional well-being for all children between the ages of 0-5 in New York State. According to The Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the last year has been a stressful time for everyone, worldwide, but in the midst of it all, children’s development doesn’t hit the pause button. They continue to learn and grow, and parents and caregivers can provide for their children, in spite of a situation that can feel frightening and overwhelming. “Even in the dark, there is light,” said Wendy Bender,

LCSW-R, IMH-E®, Executive Director, NYS-AIMH. “Our goal with PROJECT: BRIGHT LIGHTS is to celebrate the efforts of these light makers who are making a difference in the lives of young children, regarding their mental or physical health, self-esteem, or overall care and well-being.” There is no cost to nominate a Bright Light, nor a limit to how many Bright Lights a single person can nominate. It could be a NICU nurse, doula, Early Intervention provider, teacher, grandparent, child care staff, home visitor, or anyone who deserves to be honored for their efforts to bring more peace, hope, and joy into a young child’s life. Nominations can be made online at www.nysaimh.org. Submit your name and contact information, as well as that of the person you are nominating, and explain why they are a bright light. This tribute will be published on the program website with the nominee’s permission. Nominations are being collected through Monday, June 21, 2021. Nominees will also receive a Project Bright Lights certificate and special thank you.

Donations can also be made in a nominee’s name to NYSAIMH to support ongoing efforts to educate and support professionals caring for young children and their families and train them in the highest standards. “Through our work, we get the chance to interact with some of our state’s brightest minds and kindest hearts — people with a passion for child development and strengthening families,” said Bender. “They in turn work with young children and their families to help create brighter days. “With PROJECT: BRIGHT LIGHTS, everyone in this circle of caring for young children has a chance to receive a meaningful tribute for their focus and dedication. We hope this program serves to uplift the people caring for young children and inspire others to shine.” For more information on PROJECT: BRIGHT LIGHTS, or to learn more about NYS-AIMH, visit www.nysaimh.org or follow them on Facebook @nysaimh.org. Byron-Bergen senior is full STEAM ahead In 2013, a fifth-grade Byron-Bergen student entered the school science fair. Her project tested different types of lip gloss. She developed a system of criteria for subjects to rate each sample. There were over 150 entries that year. She won. The next year, she won again. Now a senior, Hope Hersom has her sights set on becoming a mechanical engineer and helping promote STEAM

(Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) fields to other young women. Hersom and several of her classmates volunteered to assist at the sixth-grade Day of STEAM activities on March 10. “Hope was very interested in helping with this event in the hopes that opportunities like this will get more girls interested in STEAM,” said Byron-Bergen STEAM Lab teacher Craig Schroth. “She mentioned that many of the younger girls shared with her how much fun they had with each challenge, including the rocket activity she was leading. I thought it was awesome that a future mechanical engineer was leading our sixth-graders with their rocket designs.” Hersom said, “I want to help rural women get into the STEAM fields – especially kids at this age – because only 13 percent of engineers are women.” She attributed her drive to take advanced technology courses in high school to her elementary school science fair experiences. When the STEAM Lab was launched in 2015, the current sixth-grade class was in first grade. Since its inception, it has been a way for all kids to build confidence and find interest through science-related topics. All of the Day of STEAM activities utilized trial and error and problem-solving techniques — from discovering the right combination of coding blocks and changing variables to working with limited resources. One of the most popular activities was 5on-5 robot soccer. It required team work and collaboration, two ideas that Schroth promotes in the STEAM Lab. “I thought today was a fantastic reminder of not only how STEAM can bring people together through collaboration and problem solving, but of the importance of providing these activities to students during their formative years,” said Schroth. “Who knows, today may have inspired a few more young people to become mechanical engineers or, at least, maintain an open mind towards science.” Provided information. Genesee County celebrates Agricultural Literacy Week

Let’s face it. This pandemic is painful. But, somehow, together, we’re getting it done. This newspaper continues to share local stories and provide vital information to the community.

Classrooms throughout Genesee County celebrated Agricultural Literacy Week March 15 through 19. Agricultural Literacy Week has been celebrated for the past 17 years as a way to promote agricultural literacy and learning to students across New York State. This year’s program highlighted the dairy industry as the book Chuck’s Ice Cream Wish (Tales of the Dairy Godmother) by Viola Butler was read to students. The book helped students understand the importance of dairy farms and how ice cream is made.

In Genesee County, 70 elementary classrooms and over 1,000 elementary students participated in Agricultural Literacy Week. The Genesee County Dairy Princess Program and Assemblyman Steve Hawley visited classrooms virtually through prerecorded videos. More information about Agricultural Literacy Week in Genesee County can be found by visiting http://genesee.cce.cornell. edu/ag-in-the-classroom/ag-literacy-week. Provided information and photo
