cultures, and nations. During this time of social distancing, ASSE is looking forward to opportunities to bring humanity back together. Preparations are well underway for the 2021-22 program year and the arrival of students this autumn. ASSE students come with an enthusiasm to practice their English and experience American culture – food, sports, shopping, and more. They also love to share their own culture with their host families – who welcome them not

as guests, but as family members – giving both the students and families a rich cultural experience. In addition, ASSE students have pocket money for personal expenses, along with health, accident, and liability insurance. ASSE students are selected for participation based on academics and good citizenship. Host families can choose their students from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries, and personal interests. ASSE’s top concern is the health of its host

families, host communities, and exchange students. As the U.S. and many other countries continue to live under temporary stayat-home orders, students will not travel unless it is considered safe to do so by the U.S. and foreign governmental agencies entrusted with public health and safety. To become a host family, or to find out how to become involved with ASSE, call 1-800-677-2773 or go to www.host.asse.com to begin a host family application. Provided information

sports & recreation Churchville-Chili grad Lewis nets 1,000th career point for Roberts Wesleyan by Warren Kozireski History was made February 21 as senior Isaiah Lewis scored his 1000th career point for the Roberts Wesleyan men’s basketball team in a 100-67 win over D’Youville College on senior day. “Coming into the game tonight, the guys in the locker room were teasing me and reminding me that I was 14 (points) away, so it’s been exciting and a testament to how good my teammates have been over the years, a lot of hard work and trusting that God has a plan and it’s special,” Lewis said on the streamed postgame audio interview. The pre-Physical Therapy major knocked down a three-pointer early in the second

half for his milestone points – the first Redhawk in the Division II era to accomplish the feat. “Not many people get to play at a school in their hometown for four years, so that part is a blessing,” the former First-Team All-County and Most Valuable Player at Churchville-Chili said to the video stream after the game. “It’s something to easily take for granted once you are here putting in the work and long days and that sort of thing. “I’m sure I will do a lot of reflecting over these next couple of days, knowing there were a lot of good memories made here, a lot of fun getting to play a lot of basketball in this gym, and it’s been special.” Roberts head coach Mark Saladzius

talked about the Lewis family heritage with the college. “The lineage of his mom and dad coming here and his brother (sophomore guard Eric) being here. The production he has had for us on and off the court, being a leader for us and representing the program the way that he does, and obviously being a great player.” With two regular season games remaining in his collegiate career, Lewis stood second on the team averaging 14.3 points per game this season, led the squad with 24 steals, and was second with 37 assists. He also led the Redhawks (among regulars) in three-pointers and at the free throw line shooting 88.5 percent.

Entering its 49th year, NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week, October 6 through 10, features the best drivers in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, and Canada as they tackle the historic Steel Palace, Oswego Speedway. It’s an annual pilgrimage for thousands of race fans from across the United States and Canada and a true New York tradition. “NAPA Auto Parts is thrilled to be a part of the history and legacy of Super DIRT Week,” said Ryan Nowitzke, general manager of NAPA Syracuse. “We look forward to seeing our dedicated, hard-working race fans from across the Northeast and Canada spend the week in Central New York at Oswego Speedway and surrounding racetracks. The DIRTcar 358 Modified Series always brings the crowd to its feet for the Salute the Troops 150, where rising stars and veteran aces clash at The Steel Palace. The Chevy Performance 75 features the DIRTcar Sportsman Series, which concludes the week of racing on four different DIRTcar tracks. The DIRTcar Pro Stock Series Wilkins RV 50 has become one of the most exciting races of the event as the Pro Stocks have moved fans to the edge of their seats, either at the track or at home on DIRTVision, with battles for the win coming down to the final lap year after year. Hometown Community Directory DeDicateD to our

COMMUNITY HerOes with special recognition for those serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Facing problem gambling together In honor of Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) in 2021, the New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG) is challenging everyone across New York State – individuals, agencies, and communities alike – to come together to face problem gambling. According to the National Council on Problem Gambling, two million U.S. adults are estimated to meet the criteria for severe gambling problems in a given year. Another four to six million would be considered to have mild or moderate gambling problems; that is, they do not meet the full diagnostic criteria for gambling addiction but meet one or more of the criteria and are experiencing problems due to their gambling behavior. The effects of problem gambling are not isolated to the individual. It’s been estimated that eight to ten additional people can be negatively affected by one person’s gambling behaviors. These people include family members, friends, neighbors, and even coworkers. If we account for individuals experiencing gambling problems and others who are affected, the estimate of those affected by problem gambling is between 64 and 80 million people. NYCPG Executive Director Jim Maney stated, “The increase and availability of gambling opportunities in NYS coupled with

the effects of COVID-19 have made the 2021 Problem Gambling Awareness Month the most important event highlighting problem gambling awareness and resources this year. It is imperative that we partner together to raise the awareness of problem gambling and make certain New York residents can access the services and resources that they need during these challenging times.” PGAM is a time for everyone to join together to show how much we care about individuals, families, and communities struggling with gambling problems. That’s why this year for PGAM, the New York Council on Problem Gambling is expanding its focus to engage all New Yorkers in problem gambling efforts. The materials and resources developed for PGAM 2021 will help individuals explore their own struggles, support agencies who want to host Gambling Disorder Screening Day events, and raise awareness of what’s being done across the state to face the issue of problem gambling. For information and to get involved in Problem Gambling Awareness Month 2021, visit: NYProblemGambling.org/PGAM. If you or someone you love is struggling, visit: NYProblemGamblingHelp.org to connect with resources in your community. Provided information
