Crunchy, complex – Cornell releases three new apple varieties by Erin Rodger This fall, apple lovers can look forward to three new varieties from the oldest apple breeding program in the U.S. — located at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). On September 2, Susan Brown, the Herman M. Cohn Professor of Agriculture and Life Science, and research specialist Kevin Maloney announced the release of NY56, NY73, and NY109 – marketed as Cordera, Pink Luster, and Firecracker, respectively. As an open-release, orchards in New York state and across the U.S. will be able to grow the new varieties without licensing exclusivity. Brown said this gives growers a competitive edge by allowing them to replace older apples with what today’s consumers want – crunch, complexity and a new twist on an American classic. With Cordera, Brown accomplished a challenging task: breeding an apple that retains both its flavor and texture while also staying scab resistant. Apple scab is a fungal disease that significantly reduces fruit yield and quality, and poses a major threat for New England growers because it’s common in wet springs. In addition to test plots in orchards across New York state, Wegmans has also been testing Cordera in Canandaigua for five years. “Having access to the varieties that Susan Brown and Cornell are working on allows us to look into the future in a way that will hopefully expose our customers to new and unique food experiences,” said Mark Bowker, orchard

Photo by Jason Koski/Cornell University. crop expert at Wegmans Organic Farm. “For us, disease resistance makes the performance of NY56 stand out in our orchard. Of course, it always comes down to flavor, and we think it has that too.” Spanish for “lamb,” Cordera was named after Brown’s predecessor, Robert Lamb, and his family. Lamb, who died in 1997, was an apple breeder at Cornell from 1948-88, and met his wife Barbara at Cornell AgriTech (formerly the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station). Now their daughter, Betsy Lamb, M.S. ’81, is an ornamentals coordinator at Cornell’s New York State Integrated Pest Management program. “Bob would have been thrilled to know this apple variety was named after him and our family,” said Barbara Lamb. “He was passionate about breeding apples and would be thrilled at how successful the apple breeding program is today at AgriTech.” Brown spent 23 years working with the best attributes of Honeycrisp and Gala apples to perfect Pink Luster. Its bright pink-red skin, crisp texture, and juiciness make this new variety shine. Pink Luster also matures in midSeptember, which makes it well-suited for on-farm sales and U-pick operations. “NY73 has generated substantial interest at our orchard given how pleasingly different it is from the routine common list of apples,” said John Halsey, owner of the Milk Pail in Southampton, New York. “Some of the visitor comments we have heard are that it has beautiful color, medium to large size making it fun and easy to pick, wonderful mild tart flavor, and very smooth enjoyable skin texture.” Firecracker is being dubbed a “triple threat” – it’s one of few varieties that works well for eating, baking, and hard cider production.

“Firecracker has a partial russet skin, and it has a unique combination of acidity and sweetness that produces really complex and evolving flavors,” Brown said. “It’s ideal for anyone who wants to go on a culinary adventure.” With the addition of Cordera, Pink Luster, and Firecracker, CALS will have released more than 69 apple varieties since 1880. The most recent varieties from Brown’s breeding program, SnapDragon and RubyFrost, have been highly successful with growers across the state and are also exported to markets in Canada, Israel, and Asia. “Research and thorough testing are crucial in making a really good apple, but that takes a whole team,” Brown said. “Research specialist Kevin Maloney, the Cornell AgriTech Field crew, researchers at Cornell AgriTech and the School of Integrative Plant Science, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the New York apple industry all deserve credit in collaborating to help deliver varieties that support the apple industry.”

Comments OHS Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk update This year life with the COVID-19 virus has necessitated the altering or cancellation of most social events including The Spirits of Spencerport Ghost Walk. These circumstances have allowed us to get more creative with how we accomplish our mission to Investigate, Preserve and Promote Ogden’s History. We’ve utilized media to bring you virtual tours of the 2020 exhibits, articles recounting the history of a few artifacts in the collection, and stories about some of the people that settled Ogden. Originally put on as a fundraiser for the 2017 Celebrations, the Ghost Walk has continued with the Ogden Historical Society as a means to support our mission. It’s a popular event with a dedicated committee. Cancellation is disappointing to all, and we felt the need to do something. The Ogden Historical Society is pleased to announce that weekends in October will feature videos of some of our favorite Ghost Walk Stories. You can see them on our Facebook page, Ogden Historical Society - Ogden, New York. Donations are appreciated and can be made via our website http://OgdenHistoricalSociety.org. Remember they call it the Eerie Canal for a reason.

Wheatland-Chili Director of Curriculum uses newly-earned doctorate to support district through pandemic shift In July 2020, Jennifer Sinsebox successfully defended her dissertation, thus completing a two-year program at Saint John Fisher College and earning her doctorate in Executive Leadership. The coursework focused on leadership skills and theories, mission, vision, and strategic planning, and required her to write a dissertation for publication. And it couldn’t have come at a better time. Sinsebox completed the program just as school districts across New York began developing reopening strategies. “The timing is serendipitous,” Sinsebox said. “Now I can devote my energy and time to the decisions needed to support the teachers’ new learning.” Sinsebox’s dissertation is titled ‘Supervision and evaluation practices that impact teacher learning.’ It is a case study of how teachers learn and change based on APPR (annual professional performance review) evaluations – from the teacher’s perspectives. “I interviewed teachers and reviewed their APPR and asked targeted questions to learn, within supervision and evaluation practices, what helps them improve their teaching practices. The theory has really broadened my vision of how adults learn and the considerations as you are teaching adults. We differentiate instruction for students, so for teachers, we really need to meet them where they are and identify what it is that they need to learn.” As Director of Curriculum, Sinsebox brings these skills back to Wheatland-Chili at a crucial time. The traditional

framework of teaching and managing is engrained in the educational system. As districts work to adapt to entirely new health and safety guidelines, as well as the implementation of technology used to deliver comparable and sufficient education, Sinsebox will implement her dissertation findings to address the unique needs of the teaching staff and the organization as a whole. “We’re asking an entire Dr. Jennifer Sinsebox educational system – from leaders to teachers to bus drivers to custodians to nurses to parents to how lunch is served – to reimagine everything that they have ever done, as well as everything that anyone has ever done,” Sinsebox said. “I appreciate the support of the district. I now bring a new skill set and a different way of thinking into the district leadership. We are having courageous conversations. We are having to make difficult decisions. We’re going to work together so we can give a rich experience to our young learners.” Provided information and photo

Hilton Community Clothes Closet adds evening hours The Hilton Community Clothes Closet, located in the basement of Hilton Baptist Church, 50 Lake Avenue, is expanding its hours of operation beginning in October. In addition to Tuesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m., the Clothes Closet will now be open from 5 to 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday and third Thursday of the month. Appointments are not necessary. The Clothes Closet has clothing in all sizes, for every member of the family. There are no residency requirements, but it is asked that families only visit once a month. Several rules are in place to comply with CDC guidelines on COVID-19. Clients are asked to wait in their cars in the

parking lot until called into the building by a volunteer. Only one family is allowed in at a time. Anyone entering the building will be required to wear a face covering, including children over the age of two. Upon entering the building, families will be asked to fill out a form for tracing purposes. Anyone not feeling well is asked to postpone their visit. Donations of gently worn clothing as well as shoes in good condition are always welcome. Undergarment donations should be new and in an unopened package. Bergen celebrates library ribbon cutting The Town of Bergen and the Byron-Bergen Public Library hosted a virtual ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, September 26, to celebrate the renovations that were completed last spring at the 13 South Lake Avenue building. The ribbon-cutting was originally scheduled for April but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials were in attendance at the library for the ceremony, which can be viewed on the Byron-Bergen Public Library Facebook page. The purpose of the renovations was to remove the architectural barriers that prevented people with physical disabilities from fully participating in the numerous social, educational, recreational, and civic activities provided at the facility. The building also houses the offices of the Town Assessor and Town Code Enforcement Officer. The work included: renovation of restrooms and kitchenette; new carpeting; new electric and fire alarm system; accessible doors; new entryway; new circulation desk; new lighting; renovation of offices, multi-purpose and storage rooms. The project was funded by a SAM grant through Senator Ranzenhofer, a NYS Library Construction grant, and the

is the first Alzheimer’s disease trial to recruit people as young as 55 years old who are at risk of developing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease as they get older. It introduces a personalized medicine approach that will tailor treatment dose levels to a participant’s particular risk of memory loss related to Alzheimer’s disease. “We know that changes in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease begin up to 20 years before a person notices symptoms, but until now most clinical trials have included older patients who already have symptoms,” said Reisa Sperling, MD, director of the Center for Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and co-principal investigator for the AHEAD Study. “By inviting younger participants, we hope to help individuals who are at higher risk – such as people with family history – get ahead of the disease with early intervention. We also want to reach diverse communities to learn more about why people of color may be at higher risk of cognitive decline.”

The AHEAD Study consists of two different clinical trials testing the same investigational drug (known as BAN2401). Participants are enrolled in one of the two trials based on the level of amyloid in their brain. Amyloid is a protein that builds up in people who can go on to have memory problems and develop Alzheimer’s disease. The trial is led by experts at the University of Southern California’s Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Research Institute, the Alzheimer’s Clinical Trials Consortium, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. “The personalized approach for people years before memory loss has begun has the potential to be a breakthrough in Alzheimer’s prevention,” said Stephen Salloway, MD, MS, and director of the Memory and Aging Program at Butler Hospital. “This new tailored approach can potentially serve as a model to improve clinical trials in Alzheimer’s research and other diseases.” The sixth leading cause of death in the United States, Alzheimer’s is the only disease among the top 10 causes of death that cannot be prevented, cured, or slowed. Currently, 5.6 million Americans 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s and this number is expected to nearly triple by 2050. Communities of color experience higher incidence of the disease than white communities, yet they remain underrepresented in clinical research. “Both of my parents were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. I can’t run away from that, but I can help find a potential treatment,” said Dave Kalberer, recipient of the first AHEAD infusion at Butler Hospital. “I’m proud to be at the front of the line for this exciting opportunity and am hopeful this trial can change not just my life but millions more.” The AHEAD Study seeks 1,165 participants from North America. The study has more than 100 study locations worldwide, including Rochester. For more information on eligibility requirements or to find a trial site location, visit AHEADstudy.org. Halloween in Hamlin a little different this year; display building groups wanted This year, holiday festivals in local recreation departments will be a little different. With temporary guidelines in place to keep everyone safe from the COVID-19 pandemic, recreation departments and residents have also been rethinking how best to approach their holiday plans and activities. The Hamlin Recreation Department will not be able to host its annual Scream Fest event this year, but instead has created a new event in order to provide fun Halloween opportunities for families and friends. Hamlin’s Horrid Halloween Drive-Thru will take place on Saturday, October 31, from 7 to 9 p.m., in Hamlin Town

Park, 1658 Lake Road, Hamlin. This free event for families and kids will encompass a drive through Hamlin Town Park amongst scary, creepy, fun, and horrid Halloween displays. The Friends of Hamlin Recreation have been working hard with the Recreation Department to coordinate this new event and invite other small groups of families, friends, and co-workers to help build more displays to fill the park. Sponsors are helping fill the goodie bags which will be presented to children at the end of the drive-thru.

The concept is that each display building group will be a “safe” group, autonomously building and/or performing their own display. All display builders will be provided with pizza and each display, after having been voted on by the public during the drive-thru, will be eligible for the coveted Golden Pumpkin Award and a $100 cash prize. If any other local groups would like to participate in this event by building a scary, creepy, fun, or horrid Halloween display, contact the Hamlin Recreation Department at 964-7222. Town of Sweden lowers tax levy, as well as tax rates, for 2021 The Town of Sweden’s Tentative 2021 Budget, filed on September 22, lowers the regular tax levy by $173,633 and lowers the projected tax rates by thirty-nine cents per thousand in the Village of Brockport and sixty-one cents in the Town outside the Village. The Town newsletter, delivered inside this edition of Westside News, provides in depth details about the budget, the tax levy, and tax rates.

Most property owners will see a decrease in their Sweden Town Taxes on their January 2021 tax bill. There are two major exceptions: properties in the new Lake/Redman/Countryview water district and properties whose assessments rose more than 15 percent in the Village and 17 percent in the Town outside the Village. “The Town Board took immediate action when COVID19 struck,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “We delayed

the purchase of equipment, reduced staffing, and asked all departments to reduce departmental expenditures. At the same time we have preserved all services and are completing the capital projects that had already begun. It has been a tough process, but Sweden is in a strong financial position despite the challenges that COVID-19 has created.” Provided information

Call today to learn more about our program! Brockport promotes International Walk to School Day Since 1997 communities have been coming together for Walk to School Day. The Brockport Walk to School Committee and the Brockport Central School District have been participating in this event since 2005. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event will look a bit different. While October 7, 2020 is the official Walk to School Day, families are asked to walk throughout the week of October 5. Given the social distancing guidelines and heightened safety mandates, the district will not have greeters or food and water stations on campus this year. The week-long event is intended to promote healthy habits and is for all students whether on campus or learning at home. Brockport CSD families are asked to send photos of students being active and walking throughout the week. Photos should be submitted to communications@bcs1. org and will be shared on the district’s social media and Brockport’s Walk to School Facebook page. Regular physical activity helps children build strong bones, muscles, and joints and decreases the risk of obesity. “Walk to School Day promotes a healthy lifestyle,” said Dr. Goetz, BCSD Medical Director and local pediatrician. “We hope many will join us, whether walking to school or around the neighborhood.” All participants are reminded to observe proper social distancing and wear a mask if social distancing cannot be maintained. Although more than 70 percent of homebuyers are using the internet to gather information about making their next home purchase, most will rely on a Realtor to guide them through the sales transaction process. That's why Realtor web sites are a popular virtual location for starting a home search. Buyers can investigate many aspects of the home buying process on Realtor sites, which typically showcase local listings and allow you to browse through their inventory of homes at your leisure. A good site offers photographs of every listing and information about the home. If you are excited about a listing, most sites invite you to email the agent for more information, or to make an appointment to see the property. Other features of buyer-friendly sites allow you to calculate monthly mortgage payments. Some give information about local schools, shopping and recreation in the area. Using the internet is an excellent way to start the hunt for your new home. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 585-734-3362.
