Brockport Rotary memorializes an exceptional Rotarian by Pat Baker Earlier this month, Brockport Rotary finally was able to honor its 50-year Rotary member, Eugene (Gene) Wood, by planting a tree with an accompanying memorial stone on the east side of Brockport’s Seymour Library. The photo shows the attendees and tree purchased with donations made in Gene’s memory. Remaining funds were sent to Rotary International in his name. Rotarian Doug Clare noted the tree was provided at cost by Sara’s Farm Market; planting and maintenance donated by Aaron Frisch Landscaping. Most members spoke of his long club and many community contributions and how the tree placement nearer to East Avenue allows those coming to and leaving Brockport to think of Gene and to honor his memory through acts of kindness and community service. Gene’s wife, Delores gave a moving tribute emphasizing Rotary’s proud history of over 50 Gene Wood in presentation mode years of service to at 2012 Rotary Changeover Dinner. the Brockport community. She provided Provided photo. examples of how Rotarian projects often were family affairs, such as working for 30 years at senior citizen breakfasts, 25 years of ziti dinners, many geranium sales, and currently pie sales. Gene also presided over the induction of more new Brockport Rotarians than anyone and continually promoted membership efforts.

Those in attendance at the tree dedication ceremony included (l-r) Brad Mitchell, George Dahl, Donna Dahl, Doug Clare, Molly Mitchell, Deb Clare, Lorrie D’Angelo, Delores Wood, Art Appleby, Eileen Whitney, Brandi Reis, Norm Knight, Betty Knight, and Mary Jo Orzech. Provided photo. Like so many friends, colleagues, and family who perished during the pandemic, many burial and memorial services, like Gene’s, were postponed (he died suddenly in December 2020.) Unlike many persons in their 90s, Gene did not succumb to COVID-19. However, the pandemic canceled plans to celebrate his 50th anniversary of Rotary membership (hence the word finally in the first sentence). A surprise celebratory dinner was scrubbed a week prior when all such events in March 2020 were canceled. Gene’s Rotary hero, Don Alhart, both a former Rotary Area 7120 Past District Governor and 13-WHAM’s esteemed anchorman was to supply the evening’s highlight – the presentation of a Rotary International Paul Harris Honor in recognition of Gene’s long history of service to Rotary. When later informed of the plans, the always humble Gene could scarcely believe all that was planned for him. Gene personified the dedicated Rotarian: he often was called “Mr. Brockport Rotary” in recent years. People just don’t belong to any service club for 50 years without a sense of loyalty and strong dedication to the tenets of the organization. Gene was invested in Rotary: he worked every project, attended every event, and supported Rotary until the very end. He was very proud of the organization’s many accomplishments – at every level. Being the first member inducted after the local club’s 1969 chartering and an early club president meant he became the heart of the club and its dedicated historian, a role he loved. He knew it all, from the popular 1970s Oktoberfests,

Those with time to give might want to consider joining Rotary or another community service club. New members are needed to help fill the void left by the likes of Gene Wood.

Construction begins on resiliency projects in Kendall The New York State Department of Transportation has started construction on a $950,000 project to combat flooding in the Town of Kendall as part of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI), aimed at rebuilding lakeshore communities affected by Lake Ontario flooding in 2019. During times of high water, culverts adjacent to Edrose Shore, Knapp Shore, and Thompson Drive become clogged with debris, causing frequent road closures due to flooding. This interruption to traffic is a safety hazard, limiting emergency access to nearby residents. Resiliency and revitalization measures for this project consist of replacing four existing culverts located within 200 feet of Lake Ontario with a more modern design that will ultimately enhance safety and promote uninterrupted access for nearby residents and homes. Town of Kendall Supervisor Anthony Cammarata said, “Through the Governor’s Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative, and with great partnership with state agencies, we will replace four critical culverts. These measures will not only reduce the chance of road closures due to flooding but will also increase public safety for the residents of the Town of Kendall, allowing continued access for emergency vehicles and personnel. We are thankful for this opportunity to work collaboratively with New York State.”

In response to the extended pattern of flooding along the shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River, Governor Cuomo created REDI to increase the resilience of shoreline communities and bolster economic development in the region. Five REDI Regional Planning Committees, comprised of representatives from eight counties (Niagara and Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga and Oswego, and Jefferson and St. Lawrence) were established to identify local priorities, at-risk infrastructure and other assets, and public safety concerns. The REDI Commission allocated $20 million for homeowner assistance, $30 million to improve the resiliency of businesses, and $15 million toward a regional dredging effort that will benefit each of the eight counties in the REDI regions. The remaining $235 million has been allocated towards local and regional projects that advance and exemplify the REDI mission. At Governor Cuomo’s direction, the REDI commission toured areas hard hit by flooding on Lake Ontario and worked with local communities to come up with a new vision for the shoreline from both a resiliency and an economic development point of view in order to build back better and stronger for the future. Paving work underway along Route 531 in Ogden Milling and paving work began June 21 and will continue over the course of several weeks to resurface the travel lanes along Route 531 between Route 259 (Union Street) and the 531 Terminus at Route 36. Hawley’s 2021 legislative recap

SN

at multiple levels of government, they refused to meaningfully curtail his emergency authority or rescind any of the restrictions he placed on small businesses, even as available scientific data demonstrated that they were unnecessary. Despite all of the questions surrounding his conduct, and especially his handling of nursing homes during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the governor held a grip on power as firm as ever as we left Albany after session. Even as the Assembly itself has conducted an investigation throughout the last several months into his multiple potential wrongdoings, we still have nothing to show for it. While this year was largely disappointing, legislatively speaking, there was at least one bright spot within it that I feel we should all be proud of. After fighting to make it happen for years and having my proposals to do so shot down in committee, I was proud to see a bill passed (A.7865) that will provide free tuition to members of Gold Star families. While I wish we were able to pass this bill even earlier to begin helping Gold Star families as soon as possible, President Reagan said it best, “There is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.” So I am simply relieved to see this idea become law one way or another. It is indeed heartening that on at least one issue, we were able to come together and do the right thing, so I am hopeful that next year we can build upon that success bearing in mind who we really need to be helping here in New York state. politically speaking This last year, industry and society at large have shifted drastically as the challenges we’ve faced have forced us to be more innovative and resilient than ever before. However, even as private businesses and families alike found new ways to thrive while braving a pandemic, it was another year of business as usual for the governor and his allies in the legislative majority. They worked to raise taxes, chip away further at our constitutional rights, and construct the most expensive budget in our state’s history, a monstrous proposal that spends more than Texas and Florida do within a year combined, while doing little for those who need help most. Giving recovering small businesses less than half of what’s being given to undocumented immigrants in direct assistance is unconscionable, and there’s nothing progressive about letting small, family-owned businesses die for the sake of helping people who broke our laws to be here. These small businesses are built up over decades through generations, and are places where people find their first jobs or even their lifelong careers. They are what make the towns, villages, and cities where we live the unique and special places we know them to be, and it has been incredibly saddening to see so many of them continue to struggle when there’s so much more we could have done to support them, their employees, and the communities they serve. What has been even worse than the majority’s failure to provide adequate assistance to our small business owners, has been their unwillingness to stand up to the governor’s active attempts to encumber their success. Even as he remained embroiled in scandal and under investigation

WN Digital Media brings exciting new services and familiar face back to Westside News Beginning this month, Westside News Inc. will now be offering some powerful digital marketing and advertising services and products to the local business community. Adding to and enhancing the current portfolio of print publications, WN Digital offers a “unique to the market” suite of marketing packages that include email marketing, digital flip-book publications, social media marketing, digital TV and radio advertising, and much more. After over 20 years away, Westside News welcomes Gary Sajdak back to the team to lead the new digital initiative as Digital Marketing Director. Gary gained a wealth of advertising and marketing experience as a graphic designer and account manager in his 13 years at the paper from 1985 to 1998. Over the years since, Gary, a resident of Ogden, held positions as Account Director at a local advertising agency, Regional Marketing Manager at Galyan’s Sporting Goods, Sales & Marketing Manager at a local real estate company, Sales & Marketing Director at a local television station, and most recently an Account Director for a national digital marketing company. “Westside News is happy to bring back Gary Sajdak,” stated Keith Ryan, President and Publisher at Westside News. “When Gary was here previously, we provided services to our customers to do TV and radio advertising as Gary was trained in that aspect of marketing, too. When he left in 1998, print was still the number one media source for advertising for most mom and pop operations, which is our typical customer, so we didn’t try to fill the role left by Gary’s departure. While we feel print is still a very important aspect of any marketing plan, there are other ideas that our customers may find beneficial. If we are not offering those different ideas to our customers, our customers will find someone who does offer them. Westside News has never been the high-price leader in filling marketing needs of its customers, and that will be the same with the other ideas that we will present to our customers.” “I am thrilled to be back home at Westside News,” says Sajdak. “Being welcomed back by Keith and the staff is a great feeling. It’s an honor to be able to share the experi-

ence I’ve gained over the past 20-plus years to present some great new marketing concepts to current advertisers and new businesses throughout the Rochester market.” WN Digital Media offers businesses of all types and sizes a variety of powerful new marketing opportunities. Our interactive digital niche publications will include pop-up videos, email and website links, video interviews, commercials, product intros, interactive restaurant menus with printable coupons, and more that can be enjoyed on your desktop, tablet, laptop, or mobile device. Want your own digital brochure or magazine? We can help you with that as well. Our email, social, and OTT TV marketing campaigns can be targeted to a wide or specific audience that meets your customer criteria. We can break it down to Gary Sajdak is leading the new a specific market, zip digital initiative. Provided photo. code, gender, age, interest, and other personal preferences. We provide our clients with professional advice and content creation along with detailed reach results from their campaigns. “We have some great multi-level packages to offer,” says Sajdak. “With all these new marketing concepts, there are affordable opportunities for businesses of all types and sizes. Contact me or your current Westside News rep to create a special package for you and your business.” For additional information on the new WN Digital services, contact Gary at gary@wndigitalmedia.com or call our office at 352-3411.

Festival in the Fork - A westside summer festival coming July 10 by Tami Raco Festival in the Fork is a free community festival taking place in Hamlin on Saturday, July 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The festival will be held at 50 Hamlin Clarkson Townline Road at the fork of Rt. 18 and Townline Road, the site of Northstar Fellowship.

There will be live music from local recording artists; blues, rock, and other genres. Free food is provided, consisting of ribs, burgers, hot dogs, popcorn, soft drinks, and slushies. Face painting for children, a bounce house, family-friendly games and activities are all at no charge. There will be special parking for motorcycle clubs

and a classic and collectible car area. The festival will also be hosting a job fair with local employers who are hiring. For those in need, there is a food pantry table as well as monetary assistance. The event is free to the community and is being sponsored by area churches dedicated the community and bringing people together. In addition to the churches partnering, there are local sponsors such as Tops, Foodlink, Russ Loria, Father’s Heart Ministries, Daniel Soto, Camry Ministries and more. Handicapped parking is available. Bring your lawn chairs and get a great spot to watch the bands, according to organizers. Pastor Andy Chase came to Northstar Fellowship earlier this year. He has pastored churches, including The Calvary Church

in Rush, which he led in addition to his full-time career. He took some time off from church leadership to raise his family, and now that his four children are young adults, he and his wife, Lisa, felt called to help this small church in Hamlin. “I was asked several times to pastor this church, but I had a vision to do something even greater. Something beyond reaching those inside of a church but to create an event for all people of the area to come together and reach them outside of the church walls,” said Pastor Andy. “If religion has hurt you, if you feel lonely, unwanted, if you are poor, disabled, or hurting, please come to this non-religious event.” For more information on the event, visit www.festivalinthefork.com.

The Brockport Lions Club inducted two new members at its June 16 meeting. Pictured (l-r) are sponsor Lion President Norman Knapp, new member David Miller, PDG Chuck Switzer performing the induction, new member Melanie Perreault, and sponsor Lion Pam Beach. Provided information and photo.

Growing colorful dianthus by Kristina Gabalski If you are looking for a colorful flowering plant for the front of your perennial border, look no further than dianthus. Members of the charming dianthus family are commonly called “pinks,” and include clovescented carnations. Native mainly to Europe and Asia, there are hundreds of varieties of dianthus, which can be annual, biennial, or perennial. According to Colorado State University Extension, the name “pinks” refers to the jagged edges of the flower petals. The Latin word pinct, means pinked or scalloped. Dianthus vary in height from two to 20 inches tall, but most garden varieties are in the 10- to 20-inch tall range. The plants are vigorous and will spread to form tight mounds loaded with buds and blooms. Dianthus begin blooming in late spring and can bloom until frost, especially if spent blooms are pruned from the plant. Dianthus have five petals on each flower head and range in color from white and pink to yellow and red. Some colors are almost neon in their intensity. Dianthus varieties include a range of flower shapes and markings, and I have been impressed with how tough and colorful the plants are in a sunny, hot, dry area of my garden. Leaves are typically grey-green or blue-green, but it can be difficult to see the leaves on some varieties as the mounding plants are often completely covered with blooms. Dianthus prefers a sunny location with at least six hours of full sun each day. Do not over-water - the plant’s foliage can turn yellow, and root rot disease can set in.

Dianthus in my garden seemed to thrive on neglect last year, and those I transplanted from containers into the ground in December are blooming heavily now. Colorado State Extension recommends planting dianthus 12 to 18 inches apart as good air circulation around the stems is needed. Keep the crown level with the surface of the soil and avoid mulch to help encourage air circulation. The flowers can be fed lightly every six to eight weeks with an all-purpose liquid fertilizer, but the plants are not demanding. Be careful not to over-fertilize. Dianthus also need well-drained soil. To encourage season-long bloom, dead-head spent flowers. A variety I purchased this year, Everlast™ Lavender + Eye Pinks, needs to be pruned to near ground level in late fall after a hard freeze. Make sure to note the care tag on the dianthus variety you purchase. Keep in mind that many species of dianthus are short-lived perennials. You may want to plant dianthus annually so that as older plants die off, younger plants take their place. This also allows you to experiment with the hundreds of species and varieties that are available. As with most perennials, dianthus can suffer from common diseases such as botrytis and powdery mildew as well as insect issues such as aphids. However, I have had very few problems growing dianthus, and proper garden maintenance can help control or even eliminate these issues. Dianthus tends to be deer resistant and grows well in containers. It is also a great choice for cottage gardens and rock gardens.

IT’S ON!!! We are elated to announce that we will be holding our annual carnival this year,

JULY 14TH-17TH.

With that being said the carnival will look a little different this year. For example: we have decided to skip our usual practice of bringing in a national act in “The Zoo” Wednesday night, but we will continue to have live music each night. Thursday night we will have the Grand Parade starting at 7pm. Unfortunately we will not be able to have the Kiddie Parade on Saturday this year. We have a couple rules to follow this year. 1. If you don’t feel well, we ask you to stay home. 2. Follow CDC guidance on masking. 3. Be respectful of others and have a great time.

We are looking forward to seeing your smiling faces all four nights! Dianthus are easy to grow and can add a lot of color to your landscape. They are also great in containers. Photo by Kristina Gabalski.

The Sweden Town Board has approved a three-month extension to the Iroquois Rock excavation permit in order to continue monitoring concerns raised by residents at a May 25 public hearing. Generally, the permit is renewed for three years. However, not all concerns raised by residents had been rectified by the board’s June 23 meeting, so the board approved an extension until September 29, 2021 to give the company more time to fix the problems, without giving them the full three-year permit. Complaints raised by residents mostly centered around the trucks entering and

leaving the quarry; dirt tracked on the roads and not cleaned up as required; overweight trucks using Swamp Road; the speed of trucks and the lack of adherence to stop signs. The town has contacted the sheriff ’s office and state police agencies to request more enforcement in the area. The Town Board will have another public hearing regarding the quarry’s permit on August 24, 2021 at 6:30 pm. At the time, residents will be able to weigh in on whether quarry operations, including trucking operations, have improved. Provided information

Highlights of Summer Serenades 2021 by Jacqueline Davis After a long year of absence, Summer Serenades is back in town, celebrating its tenth anniversary and honoring Brockport. Serenades is now hosted by the Village of Brockport. Program details are available at www.brockportny.org. Brockport is a small gem of a community. Known as the Victorian Village on the Erie Canal, it is culturally rich with museums, public art, numerous musical events like Summer Serenades, and a vibrant SUNY college. This year’s Serenades honors this duality musically, with its lineup of events, and culturally, with the recognition of The Three Bills. As in previous years, concerts, with the exception of the RPO, will be held at the Brockport Welcome Center, 11 Water Street on the Erie Canal. The rain location is St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at Main and State Streets. The first concert of the summer is Thursday, July 15, at 7 p.m. Zak’s Pack, a local high-energy rock and roll band performing old favorites of the ’60s and ’70s, kicks off this exciting season following a village event from 5:30 to 7 p.m. A kayak flotilla from Commissary Park will end at the Welcome Center for the new adaptive kayak launch dedication, music from local group She Sings, and more. All are invited to join the fun. This season also introduces two new musical entertainments. Singers from the Finger Lakes Opera will perform Broadway songs and favorites from their repertoire on July 22. The Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra closes the series on August 29. Both are well known in the area and will bring musical diversity to the program. Serenades is fortunate to have been selected as a summer venue for a Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra concert on August 5. Those who remember the RPO visit in 2018 know what a special evening this will be. The Village website will have time and location details soon. In addition, you can expect a good time with regular crowd favorites: Eight Days a Week, musicians having fun with Beatles standards; Feedback, a high-energy six-piece band featuring the lead vocals of Vernette Hill; and Chris

Wilson, popular songwriter and singer with an international following. Check the Summer Serenades ad in Westside News West Edition for the full season listing. Culturally speaking, Serenades is celebrating The Three Bills, three notable Brockport men who each made significant contributions to the Brockport community. All three were highly regarded professors at the college, illustrating the long history of connections between SUNY Brockport, the Village, and surrounding towns. Bill Hullfish brought tunes from the 19th century alive when he and his Golden Eagle String Band played their traditional folk instruments to the delight of all when they performed at Summer Serenades and numerous other local events. In addition to teaching at the college for nearly 50 years, Bill was an internationally recognized musician, composer, and author. His Golden Eagle String Band features both historic music of the Erie Canal and Bill’s original compositions. He passed this year and will be greatly missed. Bill Stewart, internationally recognized ceramic sculptor, taught dynamic and inspiring classes at SUNY Brockport for over 30 years. His work positioned the college as one of the country’s premier progressive art departments. His artwork brought mystery, humor, and joy to the Rochester community for more than half a century. At the Welcome Center, his “Howdeee” sculpture welcomes community members and visiting boaters from around the globe as they pass through Brockport on our famous Erie Canal. He also passed this year. The third Bill, Bill Andrews, is known for his research and publications about Brockport’s history in addition to his long career as a popular professor in the Political Science Department at SUNY Brockport. The results of many of his research projects can be seen in numerous panels around town, visual displays of Brockport’s industrial, social, and agricultural history, installed by the Brockport Community Museum, of which he is a founding member. He is also a founding member of the Summer Serenades, among his other numerous village contributions. He is still very active at age 93. Summer Serenades will continue to be funded solely by

Grant writing workshops for historical organizations The Museum Association of New York (MANY) is offering ten “Tell Your Story and Make Your Case” regional grant writing workshops across New York State this fall. The Rochester area workshop is planned for Thursday, October 14, at the Rochester Museum & Science Center. These workshops are being produced as a program of the Pomeroy Fund for NYS History with support from the New York State Council on the Arts. In these participatory workshops, MANY Executive Director Erika Sanger will guide attendees through the grant writing process to build skills and develop insights, including analyzing guidelines, outlining narratives, writing statements of need, and developing budgets. Sanger will share examples of successfully funded grant narratives, hints for streamlining work processes, and designing visually appealing attachments. Each workshop will be limited to 20 people with priority given to employees and volunteers of 501(c)(3) designated museums and history organizations in New York State with operating budgets of $150,000 or less. There is no charge for the workshop but participants must apply and meet the requirements. Applications are currently being accepted by MANY. Qualifying applicants will be notified of acceptance status before Friday, July 30, 2021. To learn more about these grant writing workshops and to apply online, visit: https://nysmuseums.org/grantwriting-workshops Provided information

FFA and 4-H members bring farm experience to Byron-Bergen On Friday, June 11, the Byron-Bergen FFA brought agriculture education to the kindergarten classes. Members of the FFA introduced the younger students to a variety of animals including cows, sheep, goats, and ducks. The outdoor event on the Elementary School grounds was a collaboration between FFA advisor Jeffrey Parnapy and kindergarten teacher Ayn Gardner. “We reached out to local people who own animals, a farmer brought his tractor in, and we’re also learning about different kinds of feed,” said Parnapy. “Both 4-H and FFA members are presenting their animals and answering the kindergarteners’ questions.” In some cases, the younger students were able to touch the animals. “I like petting the lambs,” said kindergarten student Evelyn Haywood. “Looking around today, I already think that this is going to have to be a yearly event,” said Parnapy. “Everyone is having a blast and I’m so excited that we were able to provide this experience for the kindergarten students.” Upstate Milk donated milk and cheese sticks for all the students and the FFA provided goodie bags for participating elementary students.
