GCV&M explores history of women’s rights

Volunteers gathered on October 10 to construct beds for children in need. Provided photo

Ogden Presbyterian Church helps children in need to sleep better by Tami Raco Reverend Tedd Pullano of Ogden Presbyterian Church has always had an action-oriented focus in his heart. “There is more to faith than worshipping,” he said. Rev. Pullano believes it is important to not only meet the spiritual needs of those in and outside of the church but to meet their physical needs as well. Rev. Pullano has been at OPC for the last four years. Before that, he served as Pastor at New Life Presbyterian in Rochester. “We have been very active in getting out of our building and engaging in the needs of their community,” he said. OPC provides outreach ranging from providing meals to Eagle Star veterans home, providing parenting support classes in the school, ministry at the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf, and assisting with meals and volunteers at Aurora House hospice care home. John Caloritis, an elder at the church, brought the idea of participating in the Sleep in Heavenly Peace program to the

congregation. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national program that believes a bed is a basic need for a child’s proper physical and emotional health. Shawn and Donna Ritchie direct the Rochester Chapter. The program utilizes a group of volunteers to build, assemble, and deliver handcrafted, quality beds to children in the community whose family is in need. On Saturday, October 10, Ogden Presbyterian Church and a team of volunteers built 20 beds, which will be delivered complete with sheets, comforters, and pillows for children in need. The cost was covered by church funds set aside for missions. “We have a lot of talent and skill in our church community,” said Rev. Pullano. The talents involved not only building the beds but also handcrafting quilts for the children as well. The 20 beds constructed on October 10 will go to families in the Ogden area and in Rochester. The church hopes the beds provide the families a necessity for their children and help bring them to a better place. “Giving is great but building the relationship to help them get on their feet is very important to us,” said Rev. Pullano. He hopes to stay connected to the families after all the beds are delivered and set up. The project was made possible through support from the OPC community as well as generous donations made by Matthew Fields. For information on Ogden Presbyterian Church, visit https:// www.ogdenpresbyterian.org.

As we mark the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the ground-breaking 19th Amendment to the Constitution, Genesee Country Village & Museum is offering a timely webinar series that takes a closer look at the struggle for women’s rights and equality. “Rightfully Hers: Building the Foundation for Freedom, Suffrage, & Equality” is a five-part online series featuring talks from local experts, scholars, and historians on topics ranging from Western New York suffrage leaders to the unique challenges Black women have faced in the struggle for equal rights. Each Wednesday through November 18, GCV&M will present a talk on a different aspect of women’s history, focusing on the journey towards equality and voting rights. The series begins with talks from Dr. Melinda Grube and Deborah Washington, experts on and re-enactors of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Harriet Tubman, respectively. On November 4, the day after a historic presidential election where for the first time, a Black woman is on the ballot for a major party, GCV&M will host RIT professor Tamar W. Carroll to explore Black women’s political participation in the U.S., emphasizing their efforts to win voting rights for Black men as well as Black women, efforts which continued well after the passage of the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote, due to Jim Crow laws that disenfranchised African Americans. The series continues with a look at Rochesterians Martha Matilda Harper and Kate Gleason, two pioneers in the business world

whose influence still shapes our modern landscape. Harper’s story as one of the first business owners to franchise a business nationally is perhaps one of the lesser-known local success stories, and Gleason’s legacy lives on in the innovation of her family’s business, Gleason Works. “Rightfully Hers” wraps up with Larry Bell, historian for the Howland Stone Store Museum, as he shares the fascinating story of Emily Howland and the residents of Sherwood, New York. Inspired by Quaker values, they advanced the cause of equal rights for all, through abolitionism, education, and especially women’s suffrage. This final installment caps off the larger view of the intersections of various branches of the struggle for women’s rights and freedoms and how they have influenced each other throughout history. These online sessions can be watched live, or viewed as recordings after the fact. Anyone who registers for the full series during the run of the webinar will receive information on how to log in to upcoming talks, along with links to any previous sessions as recordings. Same-day registrants after 4 p.m. will be sent a link to view the recording, due to registration time constraints. Tickets for the full series are $40 per person/$32 GCV&M members. Viewers have the option to register for the entire series, or for individual sessions at a cost of $10 per person/$8 per GCV&M member. Pre-registration is required for this online program. sports & recreation Roberts Wesleyan selected to host NCAA Championship Regionals by Warren Kozireski The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced October 14 that Roberts Wesleyan Athletics has been chosen to host the National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Championship Regionals from 2022 through 2026 and the NCAA DII East Regionals for Men’s and Women’s Cross Country in 2024. These were among 450 host sites announced for 86 sport championships from over 3,000 bids. “It’s a great honor to be chosen by the NCAA to host the Bowling Regionals here in Rochester and at Roberts Wesleyan College,” Athletic Director Bob Segave said. “We know Rochester knows how to do big sporting events and we also know that Rochester is one of the bowling capitals of the world. As we are building our NCAA Division II Program here, the ability to host over this period of time will certainly assist us in continuing the growth we have already experienced.” Roberts partnered with the Rochester Sports Commission and Visit Rochester in assembling their bids. The Redhawks added women’s bowling as an NCAA-sponsored sport in 2016. “Working with the Rochester Sports Commission and

D iversions

Visit Rochester is very important in landing these bids. We partner with Rich Mackey, Sports Sales Manager with Visit Rochester for his hard work. Rich and Libby Craig both assist us in these bids and annually travel to the NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis to stay current on the bid process and what championships are open each year. “The process was a collaborative effort. I want to thank our (head bowling) coach Marion Singleton, our Assistant Athletic Director of Communication and Events, and our entire staff for their work. We had guidance from local bowling legend Bill Fortino as well as partnership with Visit Rochester.” Bowling will take place at Bowl-A-Roll Lanes in Henrietta while cross country is at Matt St. James Cross Country Trails on the north side of campus. The trails are named for the Churchville-Chili High School (2003) and Roberts Wesleyan (2007) graduate. Roberts Wesleyan was scheduled to host Men’s and Women’s Cross Country regional and the bowling regional in this academic year, but the COVID pandemic caused them to cancel both. “We are working on a bid for the 2021 Cross Country regional and hope the NCAA will consider the fact that we lost our opportunity in 2020,” Segave added.
