Albrecht’s latest book helps readers rediscover hope and purpose Christopher Albrecht has been a fourthgrade teacher in Brockport for 23 years. On July 12, the 2018 New York State Teacher of the Year and 2019 Inductee to the National Teachers Hall of Fame held a launch event for his second book, The Rediscovery of Hope and Purpose (NFB Publishing, Buffalo, New York), at the Hall of Fame in Kansas. Written from the vantage point of an educator who has invested years of attention to the lives of students, families, and community members, this book contains explicit examples to guide readers by focusing on factors that can improve individuals and communities. It is designed to drive home the message that hope and purpose are eternal fires ready to be rediscovered. Dr. Jacob Cianci-Gaskill, Ph.D., spoke on behalf of the book at its launch event. Cianci-Gaskill was Albrecht’s student for two years, from 2001 to 2003, and is Albrecht’s first student to receive his doctorate in biology from the University of Missouri. Shortly after Cianci-Gaskill, American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten gave a passionate speech about Albrecht’s book calling it “revolutionary, brilliant, and a groundbreaking work meant for all people. This is our new guidebook. People need this book right now.” Albrecht was joined at his book kickoff

in Kansas by his wife, son, and 86-yearold father. “It meant so much to me to be joined on this journey with my family and a student who has become a close friend,” Albrecht said. With this book, Albrecht had to create a new genre of writing, coining Investigative Social Philosophy. The book includes interviews with ten inspiring people from all walks of life - from the last American homesteader in Alaska to Harvard President Lawrence Bacow to three-time NCAA National Champion Head Football Coach Tom Osborn. “I utilize the interviews as the springboards for each of the chapters after which I present compelling firsthand experiences and historical references,”Albrecht said. “All interviews have a central focus on the interviewee’s understanding of hope and purpose.” Most noteworthy is Albrecht’s interview with iconic children’s author Beverly Cleary. At the time, she was 104 years old, and Albrecht’s interview with her was the last before her death. Her interview, in its entirety, is included in the book. “An American treasure who was read by my grandparents all the way through my own kids, Beverly Cleary’s interview provides incredible wisdom about the wisdom of those that grow very old.” Other interviewees include Peter Mehlman, the co-producer of Seinfeld; Kathrine

of Dreams Uganda, Michael Warneke; globally recognized photographer, QT Luong; and 5-Hour Energy founder Manoj Bhargava. Albrecht said, “My hope in writing The Rediscovery of Hope and Purpose is to provide stability, joy, and clarity as we emerge out of uncertain times.” The catalyst for the book was a letter Christopher’s father, Werner Albrecht, sent him in March of 2020. The news of toilet paper shortages early in the COVID pandemic inspired him to chronicle a similar phenomenon he witnessed as a German boy during World War II. “My father saw seven years of war, and essentially his father was gone the entire time. I saw parallels to today’s challenges. He is a hopeful man of purpose, and that letter made me want to capture this phenomenon.” Memoir letters from his father are peppered throughout the book. Albrecht released his first book, Unconventionally Successful (NFB Publishing, Buffalo, NY), in 2020. It sheds light on many unconventional and potentially unconsidered out-of-the-box thoughts and actions that led to extraordinary outcomes. He is also a contributing writer for American Educator Magazine, with a subscription size of 1.7 million educators. Both of Albrecht’s books can be ordered through christopheralbrecht.com (personalized and signed copies), nfbpublishing. com, or Amazon.com. Provided information

Temporary lane closure on Howard Road The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists in the Town of Gates of a temporary lane closure and new traffic signals in place along Howard Road, between Buffalo Road and Hinchey Road. A portion of the northbound lane along Howard Road is closed, just south of the CSX railroad overpass, and traffic signals at each end of the lane closure will accommodate alternating one-way traffic until repairs are made to the roadway. Motorists

should expect minor delays and consider taking an alternate route. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license. Shohei Ohtani named June 2021 Hickok Belt® Award Winner Shohei Ohtani, pitcher, designated hitter, and outfielder for the Los Angeles Angels, has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for June 2021. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The 27-year-old, nicknamed “Shotime,” is in his fourth major league season with the Los Angeles Angels. The voters selected Ohtani after the newest baseball phenom posted one of the best months of his career. He is the first player since Babe Ruth to start a game on the mound leading the American League in home runs. On June 23, he became the first pitcher to hit for himself with the designated hitter rule in effect. This is the first time in pro baseball history that the American League did not use a DH when the National League used one. Ohtani was named American League player for June with a .309 average, 13 home runs for the month, a 1.312 OPS, and two wins as a pitcher. Ohtani is the first player ever to be selected an All-Star game player, both as a position player and pitcher. He pitched and hit in the July 13 All-Star game and already has 32 home runs for the season, more than any Japanese player ever in the major leagues. Other finalists for June in order of how the NSMA ranked them included Jon Rahm (golf), Simone Biles (gymnastics), Jacob deGrom (baseball), Novak Djokovic (tennis), Devin Booker (basketball), Barbara Krejcikova (tennis), Ryan Crouser (track & field), Kaylee McKeown (swimming), and Brayden Point (hockey). His selection as the Hickok Belt® Award winner for June 2021 recognizes Shohei Ohtani as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month and makes him the sixth candidate to receive the overall

Brockport Summer Serenades to feature Finger Lakes Opera’s Tomita Young Artists Finger Lakes Opera (FLO) is offering live performances in July and August throughout the region. On Thursday, July 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., the company will be featured in Brockport’s annual Summer Serenades concert series, singing a variety of familiar arias and popular show tunes. Elizabeth Long, Finger Lakes Opera’s Executive Director, explains, “The company is committed to expanding its educational and engagement programming. One of FLO’s newest collaborations will be with Summer Serenades, offering a free canal-side evening performance for the community.” Located at Brockport’s Welcome Center, 11 Water Street, just off Main, most patrons bring folding chairs or blankets for seating. The inclement weather location is St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at the corner of Main and State streets. The July 29 program will feature 2019 Tomita Young Artist Anders Namestnik, 2020 Tomita Young Artist Victoria Thomasch, and 2021 Tomita Young Artists Danielle Beckvermit, Veena Akama-Makia, and Natasha Talukdar Elam. Elam will serve as the collaborative pianist while soprano Beckvermit, tenor Namestnik, and mezzos AkamaMakia and Thomasch will sing a wide variety of popular arias from operas including Carmen, La bohème, and Don

Giovanni. The concert will also feature songs from hit shows like My Fair Lady, Les Miserables, The Sound of Music, The Most Happy Fella, and many more. Supported by a generous anonymous donation, FLO’s 2021 Tomita Young Artist program allows performers the opportunity to participate in summer and fall residencies, work alongside and learn from the seasoned FLO professionals, and perform in FLO’s mainstage productions. After receiving almost 400 applications, the nine singers and two collaborative pianists selected are a truly exceptional group of performers. In addition to Beckvermit, Akama-Makia, and Elam, this year’s class includes mezzo-soprano Imara Miles, soprano Robin Steitz, tenors Nathaniel Catasca and David Soto Zambrana, baritones John Allen Nelson and Robert H. Riordan, bass Jongwon Choi, and collaborative pianist Edward Forstman. Akama-Makia, Catasca, Steitz, and Forstman are graduates of the Eastman School of Music, and Beckvermit is a graduate of SUNY Fredonia. FLO’s own summer season line-up includes the July 25 presentation of Three Little Pigs, the July 31 Opera HITS!, and the mainstage production of The Barber of Seville. How it started.. Wednesday, July 14 Rain forced the cancelation of the Hilton Carnival on Saturday, July 17. “We are always second-guessing ourselves when making a decision like canceling the last night of our fundraiser due to Mother Nature. When we watched Salmon Creek rise [Saturday] between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., it was clear that it was going to overflow the banks and it was time to start assisting Gillette Amusements with removing the rides from the soon to be flooded field,” the Hilton Fire Department posted on Facebook. These photos show that the department made the right call. Steve Bauman, Steve Bauman Jr., Jim Bauman, Bob Floyd, Ben Floyd, and Bill Zarpentine provided equipment and assistance. Members of the community lined up on Monday, July 19, to help the department recover costs by purchasing unsold food items. Photos from the Hilton Fire Department’s Facebook page.

Great Lakes coastal damages in NY projected to cost $101 million over next five years A survey of ten New York cities, villages, and other jurisdictions along the Great Lakes shows that coastal damage from climate change will cost at least $101 million over the next five years, with shoreline communities having already spent $36 million over the past two years. These figures only represent a fraction of the need as not all shoreline jurisdictions are reflected in this figure. The Coastal Resilience Needs Assessment Survey was completed in partnership with the University of Illinois Applied Research Institute and collected information from March through May 2021. The survey received nearly 300 responses from 241 jurisdictions across all eight U.S. states and two Canadian provinces that border the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. This new information illustrates the scope and magnitude of climate impacts on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River and the need for increased federal assistance for coastal communities that are struggling to respond to threats to critical infrastructure and assets along their shorelines. The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is a binational coalition of over 120 U.S. and Canadian mayors and local officials working to advance the protection

and restoration of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River. It and other regional organizations are calling for funding in an upcoming infrastructure package to enable Great Lakes states and local governments to prepare for, respond to, and build resilience to current and future impacts from high lake levels and severe weather events. The eight Great Lakes states have over 4,500 miles of shoreline, nearly as much as all the states bordering on the Atlantic, Gulf of Mexico, and west coasts combined.

The Great Lakes represents approximately 80 percent of North America’s surface freshwater supply and provides drinking water for 40 million people. The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative says a substantial, targeted investment in coastal resilience along the Great Lakes is warranted and will generate significant benefits for the environmental and economic health of shoreline communities. An official ribbon cutting and grand opening of the new Children’s Center at Greece Public Library, 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard, was held on Thursday, July 7. This project is a culmination of several months of planning to create a new state-of-the-art space for young residents. With careful planning and budgeting, the entire expansion was paid for in cash. There was no borrowing and no increased tax burdens placed on town residents. The Children’s Library Expansion, named the “Story Garden,” includes approximately 7,000 square feet of expanded space, bringing the total space to 10,125 square feet dedicated to the library’s youngest patrons. New features include a covered outdoor children’s storytime patio, a rotunda play area complete with a “grocery store” checkout station, a planting garden, a play castle, and a kitchen and chairs for serving up some make-believe meals. The mezzanine features a life-size interactive tree with a magical fairy ball delivery system, and the upper level hosts a magnetic “gear” display and ball path. The entrance boasts a life-size “lite brite,” a lit-up play surface, curved seating, butterfly wings for photographing baby bugs graduates, and many dedicated areas are positioned throughout for children to settle in and enjoy a good read. The entire space features energy-efficient LED lighting, a fully dedicated children’s bathroom with kid-sized amenities, a new story and craft room with radiant floor heating, centrally located staff offices, skylights, and a new children’s librarian reference desk. C-C student named Rensselaer Medal winner For more than 100 years, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, in conjunction with high schools around the world, has awarded the Rensselaer Medal and scholarship to promising high school juniors who have distinguished themselves in mathematics and science. Audrey Booth who hails from Rochester is this year ’s honoree. Audrey is a student enrolled at Churchville-Chili High School. “The Rensselaer Medal is a wonderful way to pay tribute to the high school students who have achieved excellence in math and science,” said Karen Long, director of undergraduate admissions. “As we do so, we are aware that these early achievements, as imAudrey Booth pressive as they are, mark only one milestone on their future journeys of commitment to hard work, drive, focus, and collaborations. The Rensselaer Medal winners represent the next generation of leaders, scientists, innovators, artists, scholars, game designers, architects, humanitarians, and entrepreneurs.” The Rensselaer Medal was first presented in 1916 with two purposes: to recognize the superlative academic achievement of young men and women, and to motivate

students toward careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The Medal, the oldest prize of its kind in the United States, is awarded at more than 5,000 high schools throughout North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Is there anything purple coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) can’t do? They do well even in clay soils. They do well in high humidity and where winters are frigid. They don’t mind summer drought conditions and make great cut flowers. They are a native wildflower that supports pollinators and birds in your landscape. They easily self-sow and provide color throughout mid-to-late summer. Purple coneflowers are native to a large portion of North America - from the east to the mid-west of the United States, including Connecticut to Florida, and Wisconsin to Colorado and Texas. The plants are prolific bloomers and put on a show with rosy/purple blooms from summer until frost. These mid-sized plants are easily incorporated into gardens of all sizes, and even though they do self-sow, coneflowers are not pushy or aggressive plants. Following bloom, the orangey seed cones persist through the winter. The strong stems allow seed heads to catch the snow and add winter interest while providing an important food source for winter songbirds. Coneflowers are great for beginning gardeners as they are not demanding. Started by seed or by transplants, coneflowers are not picky about soil conditions and, once established, will hold up well even under the heat and dry conditions of summer. Pollinators love the blooms. Purple coneflowers are a butterfly and bumblebee magnet. Monarchs, as well as swallowtail butterflies, are drawn to the open flowers. If you are working to create a pollinator habitat in your landscape, purple coneflowers are a must.

To encourage more flower buds throughout the season, you can remove faded blooms by cutting the stem just above the leafy junction. Later in summer, refrain from dead-heading and allow flowers to mature for birds and for self-seeding. Few insects or diseases bother coneflowers; however, I do have to fight off Japanese beetles, which can heavily damage the petals. You can tap the beetles off the plants and into soapy water. Purple coneflowers are used for herbal healing. Both aboveground and root parts are used, either fresh or dried, for teas, juices, and extracts. Herbalists and pharmaceutical companies use the plant’s medicinal qualities to treat and prevent colds, flu, and infections. Studies have also shown echinacea is helpful in treating upper respiratory infections. Today, there are many new coneflower varieties to try, including double petal, frilly petal, and shorter varieties of the original purple coneflower. Alternative color varieties come in shades of white, green, orange, yellow, and bright red. Coneflowers work well in the garden with annuals and perennials that are low-growing or fine-textured. This helps bring out the coneflower’s bold impact. Try the Calibrachoa Million Bells series or verbena. Ornamental grasses offer a softening touch, and selections include blue fescue and brown sedge. Really, any perennial goes great with this versatile and fun-to-grow flower. They look stunning with phlox, rudbeckia, daisies, and more. If you are not already growing purple coneflower, they certainly deserve your consideration.

Visiting their Brockport roots by Sue Savard On June 20, 2021, as part of a family reunion, 39 descendants of the William Dailey family gathered in Brockport. Volunteers from the Emily L. Knapp Museum welcomed them at the village courthouse, distributed village maps, coffee, bottled water, and cookies, and gave a brief history of Brockport. William Dailey’s family came to America in 1836 and settled in the Town of Sweden. In 1865, William established a produce business, and by 1880, he was the largest produce distributor in western New York. He built a large facility across from the railroad station on Park Avenue. His son, Donald, managed the coal business on the same site. Because of his reputation as a careful and honorable man, he knew every farmer within a twenty-mile radius and convinced farmers to switch from growing barley to wheat, which he sold to the Shredded Wheat factory in Niagara Falls. His large home on South Avenue, built of redwood, was a showplace for many years. Upon William’s death, the business passed to his son Frank, but with the changing economy, both the business and home fell upon hard times. The house was later demolished, and the lot is now a village play-

ground. A SUNY Brockport building bears the name Vincent Dailey, political secretary to NY Governor Leman. Donald Dailey became Rochester’s Commissioner of Public Safety and later the Rochester Postmaster. William D. Dailey’s grandson, Franklyn E. Dailey, Jr., now 100 years old, wrote a book, My Time With The Sisters and Other Events, about his upbringing in Brockport in the 1920s and 30s and two books about his later years as a pilot. With the help of museum volunteers, the Dailey descendants accomplished their goal of visiting their roots, including the Catholic Church and school, the former convent, family business and home locations. Thanks to Chris Martin, the Emily L. Knapp Museum now has photographs of the total group, family groups, and the site of the Dailey family home for its files. NOAA proposes national marine sanctuary on Lake Ontario The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released of a draft proposal for a national marine sanctuary in eastern Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands region of the St. Lawrence River. The proposed sanctuary designation celebrates upstate New York’s unique maritime heritage and provides a national stage for promoting the region’s tourism and recreational opportunities. NOAA is proposing to designate up to a 1,786-square mile area of Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands region adjacent to Jefferson, Wayne, Oswego, Cayuga, and St. Lawrence counties in New York that serves as a gateway between the Great Lakes and the ocean. The nominated area contains 64 known shipwrecks and one aircraft representing events spanning more than 200 years of our nation’s history.

Based on historical records, an additional 20 shipwrecks and three aircraft may be located there. The sanctuary nomination originated as community-based initiative and continues to be locally driven. Submitted in 2017 by the Counties of Oswego, Jefferson, Cayuga, and Wayne, and the City of Oswego and supported by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, the nomination laid the groundwork to provide greater protections for these wellpreserved shipwrecks in Lake Ontario. NOAA has continued to keep local experts and the community’s wishes front-andcenter by establishing a “pre-designation” sanctuary advisory council to help inform the designation process and focus stakeholder participation. Often referred to as underwater parks, this national marine sanctuary would

enhance many existing state and federal protections for shipwrecks without limiting uses like fishing, boating, and shipping. The sanctuary designation would also bring new opportunities for research, educational programming, community engagement, and economic development. If designated, New York State and NOAA would co-manage the sanctuary. Before any further action is taken, NOAA is seeking public feedback. NOAA is hosting four public meetings in August to provide more information on the draft proposal and collect public comments. For more information on the proposed sanctuary and to submit comments, see the Federal Register notice (NOAA-NOS-2021-0050) at https:// bit.ly/2VnZ3rC. Provided information

The Hilton Fire Department would like to thank everyone for all the support during the 2021 Hilton Firemen’s Carnival! We look forward to seeing everyone back in 2022!

Retired Monroe County Fair Manager pens memoir, embarks on book tour Fran Tepper’s name was in the Rochester papers a lot in the 1990s and 2000s, sometimes to share innovations at the Monroe County Fair, sometimes to fight back against negative media and political pressure often unfairly levied against the fair. Now she is back with a fun, frank, honest memoir about her years as executive director of the Monroe County Fair, growing what was once called “an embarrassment to the industry” into one of the most innovative fairs in New York State and earning her a place as president of the New York State Association of Agricultural Fairs as well as president of the Henrietta Chamber of Commerce, which named her Business Person of the Year in 2000.

Cosmographia Books, a Rochester-based publisher, announced the launch of Tepper’s debut memoir, Fair Lady, Memoirs of a County Fair Manager, in June 2021. After two launches, one in-person and one online the week of July 11, Tepper is embarking on a regional book tour with the following upcoming events: •July 31, 2 p.m. – Tepper will be reading at Books Etc. in Macedon •August 14, 2 p.m. – Tepper will be signing copies of Fair Lady at Barnes & Noble in Pittsford More events are in the planning stage and will be listed at CosmographiaBooks. com.
