Restoring a Baby Ace by Barbara Burke photos by Karen Fien A group of aviation enthusiasts, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Chapter 44 of Rochester, are three years into restoration of a Baby Ace aircraft. The Baby Ace was the world’s first aircraft to be marketed as a homebuilt aircraft when the plans were offered for sale in 1929. Plans are still available for Baby Aces, and they are still being built today. The EAA, Chapter 44’s BART (Baby Ace Restoration Team) project consists of students and adults working together to completely restore a donated plane and engine. Young members are getting experience with the skills needed to build an aircraft, and the adults are sharing and teaching their skills to the youth. The BART Group meets every Wednesday evening at the Sport Aviation Center of Western New York (Ledgedale Airpark 7G0) in Brockport. Target date for completion of the Baby Ace restoration is Summer of 2022. Over the past three years, high school students Dhruva Rana and Tyler Mullen have been involved with the Baby Ace restoration. Dhruva Rana, a high school junior, said three years ago his mother suggested he look into the EAA Chapter 44 aviation group. “Every pilot needs to know about the working of a plane, inside and out, how it operates mechanically. Working on BART gives a unique perspective, I learn a lot from seeing how each part of the plane functions. You learn about the small things first, the sanding and fine tuning. Once you become skilled in doing that, you can do the big things like wood cutting and welding. When you stay committed to a project it is really rewarding,” Dhruva said.
Dhruva has also learned from working hand to hand with the people in the BART group. “Working with the restoration team is a really unique experience. You are three generations working together. I would never have been able to meet people like this in any other place, I would never be able to find them. If I hadn’t met them through the Chapter, I would be missing out on a lot. I am really happy that they are taking the time to teach us what they know.” For his future career, Dhruva plans to work for the Air Force as an instructor, teaching cadets how to fly. “I want to pass on to others what I have learned later in life, in my career.” Dhruva has over 100 working hours into the restoration program. Hilton High School senior Tyler Mullen is already a licensed pilot. He has been an active member of the restoration team since the beginning, with approximately 550 hours of work on the Baby Ace. Tyler has been fascinated with aviation his whole life. For the first eight years of his life, his father was in the Air Force. He said, “My dad took me to air shows and I got a chance to see all of the planes. From the time I was little, aviation was my life. My bedroom was always littered with models and drawings of planes. When I went to my dad’s office and saw a model of a plane I would just stare at it.” Tyler attended one of EAA Chapter 44’s Young Eagles Program. Attendance provides the opportunity to go flying in an airplane, free of charge. “When I walked through the door I saw the BART project, I knew that I wanted to work on it. I joined the Chapter right away.” When Tyler participated in the Young Eagles free flight they gave him a log book. “The log book is like the Driver’s Handbook that the DMV gives you to study for your

It contains all the information you will need to fly, rules and regulations, altitude restrictions, speeds, weather conditions, and about licenses and the rules of air space. With the help of the Chapter, I was able to attend ground school.” Tyler attended ground school online. Through an extensive series of video lessons, he was able to prepare for his pilot’s license. The Chapter also helped him begin flight training with the Ray Aviation Scholarship. The Chapter nominated him, and he was awarded a $10,000 scholarship. Along with the scholarship comes a requirement, a one-year deadline to earn his pilot’s license. It took Tyler only nine months to get his license. Tyler said the EAA Chapter, “Helped make my dreams come true. Many people never do get to realize their dream, and I am able to do that through my EAA membership.” Working on the BART project, Tyler says he has learned about every nook and cranny of an airplane. “I have a more intricate point of view of an airplane. I realize that each piece has a purpose, like a wing, it is a complex piece of equipment that fulfills a specific purpose.”
Tyler has also learned from the mentors he has gotten to know through the Chapter. “They are like friends, incredible people, they share their stories and we learn from that, what to do and what not to do. They have provided me opportunities that I only dreamed of.” The future plan is for Tyler to fly the restored Baby Ace, solo, to the EAA’s AirVenture Aviation Celebration held each year in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Tyler’s goal is a career in design, construction and testing of aircraft.

Aviation people are unique, we are very passionate about all things aviation, and about sharing our passion.” Rochester’s EAA Chapter 44 is an organization consisting of approximately 80 members. Founded in 1957, the Chapter enables people to realize their dreams of flight. Their mission states, “EAA Chapter 44 was established to encourage, aid, and engage in study for the improvement and better understanding of aviation and the science of aeronautics, to promote and engage in the cause of aviation safety and education, to encourage and promote the development of private aviation and the development of amateur-built aircraft through home engineering, and finally, to foster close fellowship through the exchange of ideas, skills, and mutual interests. And to have fun doing it. Members include builders, aircraft restorers, non-pilot aviation enthusiasts, pilots and student pilots, ultra-light enthusiasts, aircraft owners, renters, spouses and more.” EAA Chapter 44 is the only chapter in Rochester and the members are from all across the Rochester area. Anyone with an interest in aviation, or an interest in working on the Baby Ace restoration project are invited to visit. General meetings for EAA Chapter 44 are held on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The BART team meets every Wednesday 6 to 9 p.m. All meetings are held at the Sport Aviation Center of Western New York (Ledgedale Airpark 7G0), 44 Eisenhauer Drive, Brockport. Rochester Regional Health opening pediatric COVID-19 testing centers As emergency rooms, urgent care facilities and doctors’ offices continue to accommodate the increasingly growing volume, Rochester Regional Health is taking steps to help reduce that strain and help local children get faster access to COVID-19 testing. On October 20, Rochester Regional Health announced its new pediatric COVID-19 testing program, designed to direct children who need COVID-19 testing to locations specially outfitted to provide testing quickly, safely and accurately. “More children than ever need these tests,” explained Steven Schulz, MD, medical director of Rochester Regional Health Pediatrics in Monroe County. “By offering these testing sites, kids can get the test they need faster while helping our emergency departments, urgent cares and doctors’ offices have greater capacity to care for those experiencing more serious illness or injury.” Children who have pediatricians employed by or affiliated with Rochester Regional Health are eligible for this program.
The first pediatric COVID-19 testing location opened last week in the Wilson Medical Building, located on the Rochester General Hospital Campus. On October 21, the health system opened a second location – previously Rochester Regional Health Immediate Care in North Greece – at 470 Long Pond Road. The hours for both locations are Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. If your child receives care from an RRHemployed or affiliated pediatrician, and you think they need to be tested for COVID-19, call your pediatrician and ask for a referral. All testing is done by appointment. These locations are not able to accommodate walk-ins or patients who are not enrolled with Rochester Regional Health for primary care. Currently, the program can deliver test results in 24 to 48 hours, helping children get the results they need sooner. They are using the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test – the accepted test to determine if a child can return to school. Provided information

RPO performing free concert in Churchville ahead of November events The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) is performing a free Around the Town: Hidden Gems concert on Thursday, October 28, at 7:30 p.m. at Churchville-Chili High School, 5786 Buffalo Road, Churchville. Conducted by Kalena Bovell, the concert will feature a diverse program that includes John Williams’ “The Chamber of Secrets” from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets IV, “Voices Shouting Out” by Nkeiru Okoye, and an excerpt from Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F minor. Patrons aged 12 and up are required to show proof of vaccination plus photo ID, and all patrons are required to wear masks during the entire performance. The RPO will kick off November with New World Symphony on Thursday, November 4, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, November 6, at 8 p.m. in Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre. A pre-concert talk will start one hour before the show. Collection for 2021 Matt’s Coats for Kids runs through November 16 Matthew J. Fitton was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend to everyone he met. Those who knew him say his greatest quality was his heart and the love and friendship that he shared with others. Matt died in 2003 at age 20 as the result of a car accident. Matt’s Coats for Kids is an organization started by Matt’s family and friends. Its goal is to keep the good feelings that Matt shared by helping people. Since 2004, Matt’s Coats for Kids has collected and distributed over 10,321 coats donated by area communities for those in need. In 2016, the effort expanded to honor Giana Bartolucci and has collected and distributed over 643 pairs of new mittens and gloves. The organization began collecting new socks in 2017 in memory of Everett Bauch, Matt’s grandfather. To date, 625 pairs have been collected and donated to the area’s homeless. Since Matt’s grandmother, Eleanor B. Bauch, died in June 2021, socks will now be collected in memory of both grandparents who supported the organization’s efforts for many years.

Beatrice had a strong love of God, and her life on the family farm. She very much enjoyed her family gatherings and playing cards. Betty Ann Cooper Roberts Betty Ann Cooper Roberts, age 85, of Lexington, NC and formerly of Hilton, NY, passed away peacefully October 13, 2021, surrounded by her family at her home. She was born May 23, 1936 in Hilton, New York the daughter of the late Milo Cooper and Barbara Fleming Cooper. She is also preceded in death by her brother Ronald Cooper. Betty was a person of faith, enjoyed gardening, horses and crafting, loved her family deeply and will be missed by all. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 66 years, Carl Edward Roberts as well as her children, Curt (Nancy) Roberts and Greg Roberts and Teri (David) Simons; grandchildren Hunter, Jessyca, Danny (Kayla), Stacie (Joe), Kelsey, Kalen, Jake, and Haley; great-grandchildren Esme, Caiden and Sabrina. Sons of the American Legion revived in Churchville by Ken Juergens Prior to Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 hosting the Bills vs. Titans Monday Night Football game, qualified individuals met at the Legion to renew Churchville’s Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Squadron 954. The Harvey C. Noone SAL Squadron 954 began on May 15, 1984, and was vigorous during the ‘80s and early ‘90s. The charter remained active but in passive status due to lack of activity and membership until October 18, 2021, when seven people met and formed a nucleus to begin the Squadron anew. Like the Ladies Auxiliary, the SAL is sponsored by the Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954. The National Sons of the American Legion started in 1932 and is a legally constituted organization which is a source of pride for its members and the Legion Post. The 2021 Squadron Handbook says, “By volunteering to assist older veterans and participating in patriotic holiday events, squadrons not only expand the post’s representation but reflects the Sons purpose to foster and perpetuate a true spirit of Americanism.” The Squadron elected Ron Torcello as Squadron Commander, Joshua Nau as Finance Officer, and Jeremy Nau
as Squadron Adjutant. The group also decided on annual membership dues of $25. The Squadron’s first meeting will be on October 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Legion Post, 6444 Buffalo Road, Churchville. Wayne McConnell and Ken Juergens are Legion advisors to Squadron 954. The Squadron Handbook lists the following eligibility rules to join: “All male descendants, adopted sons, and stepsons of members of The American Legion, and such male descendants of veterans who died in service during the period of April 6, 1917, through November 11, 1918, or any time from December 7, 1941, to date, who served honorably, as set forth in Article IV, Section 1, of the National Constitution of The American Legion, or who died subsequent to their honorable discharge from such service, shall be eligible for membership in the Sons of The American Legion.” Thus, anyone with a mother, father, or grandparents from either side who were veterans, are eligible to join. On Thursday, October 14, the Brockport and Spencerport Rotary Clubs, as well as the SUNY Brockport Rotaract Club met for the social event “Play for Peanuts.” The peanuts were in the jars of peanut butter and other non perishable food collected for the local food shelf. Brown steps down from Spencerport Food Shelf Steve Brown recently stepped down after 18 years of serving as Chairperson of the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf. Brown started with the Food Shelf 21 years ago as the Verifier. For nearly two decades in this position, he was the initial contact residents had when calling for assistance. He became Site Coordinator a year after joining the Food Shelf and also held that position for some time. Three years after joining he was elected and added the position of Chairperson to his duties. Over the years Brown has seen the Food Shelf through many changes. He orchestrated two site moves - first from the Wedgewood Nursing Home building to Village Plaza on Slayton Avenue, and finally to the Food Shelf ’s current home at the Karen Baptist Church on West Ridge Road.

Steve Brown started the Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf over 20 years ago and has served in several positions over the years. He has organized countless programs to serve the residents of the Spencerport School District, including the annual Thanksgiving Program. Legal Notice Village of Spencerport Resolution 10/2021 Introduced by: Mayor Penders Seconded by: Deputy Mayor Nellis-Ewell WHEREAS, Gates Volunteer Ambulance Service (GVAS) presently provides emergency medical services to the residents of the Village of Spencerport; and WHEREAS, financial demands upon GVAS have created circumstances whereby GVAS finds it necessary to receive tax support to continue operations; and WHEREAS, the Town of Ogden and the Town of Parma have created separate Ambulance Districts to provide tax revenue to fund GVAS for the emergency medical services GVAS provides to the residents of each town; and WHEREAS, there is no provision in New York State Village Law pertaining to the creation of an ambulance district; and WHEREAS, the provisions of New York State Town Law §209 provide that upon the consent of the Village of Spencerport Board of Trustees, the ambulance district established by the Town of Ogden may tax the residents of the Village of Spencerport; and WHEREAS, the intent of the Village of Spencerport is to enter into an intermunicipal agreement with the newly created ambulance district to provide emergency medical services to the residents of the Village of Spencerport; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Village of Spencerport Board of Trustees does hereby consent to the establishment of an ambulance district by the Town of Ogden, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this resolution shall be subject to permissive referendum pursuant to the provisions of §9-900 of the Village Law of the State of New York and the Village Clerk is directed to publish notice of this resolution in accordance with said provisions. Ogden Historical Society embarks on new project Ogden Historical Society (OHS) volunteers have located the remains of a 210-year-old structure (circa 1804-1811) that they are in the process of exploring and collecting data. The site is believed to be associated with one of the earliest settlers in our area, and OHS is looking forward to discovering more about them and how they lived and worked. They have also located artifacts that will be on display in the Colby Pulver House museum in the future. In their effort to explore the site, OHS is asking members of the community for help with a few supplies. First Presbyterian Church of Chili hosting Fall Supper The First Presbyterian Church of Chili is holding its annual Fall Supper on Saturday, November 6. The roast beef dinner will be offered take-out only at 3600 Chili Avenue, starting at 4 p.m. until sold out. The cost is $14 per person (no prior ticket sales). The menu includes roast beef, homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade squash, cranberry relish, coleslaw, roll and a choice of apple or pumpkin pie for dessert. A review of the dinner’s history shows the first entry in church records about the fall supper occurred in 1916. In those days, the menus varied, some years fresh pork, sometimes ham, sometimes chicken. However, for the past 75 years or so, roast beef

has been served. The Chili Presbyterian Annual Roast Beef Dinner has become a community institution that people look forward to. In 2020, the church sold out at 5:30 p.m. having served 425 meals. During the 1920s, 30s, 40s, and probably even before, the supper was served in the balconies of the sanctuary. The room over the narthex was used as the kitchen. Water was carried by hand from across the street, dinner was cooked on kerosene stoves without vents, and there was only a single sink. Preparing these dinners was difficult and hot. Yet, it was not uncommon to serve over 200 people in three seatings. The balconies could seat 38 people on each side, thus a maximum of 76 people per seating. Of course, the church now has a dining room and in recent years between sit-down and take-out served about 500 people on average. Provided information and photo

Comments Spencerport Cartons For Christmas Every year in time for the holidays, our community reaches out to help local families who are struggling. The project is Cartons For Christmas. Area churches, schools, service organizations, businesses, and individuals of all ages lend their support. Last year we served 156 local families by providing gift cards, some food, and 208 toys for young children. But again this is not a normal year. Because we will not have the large number of volunteers to sort and pack all the food items we normally collect, our focus this year is to provide grocery store gift cards to families. We ask you to partner with us to be successful in this temporary change by donating grocery store gift cards or cash to buy gift cards. We will still accept food items. Brockport School Board approves Capital Improvement Project During the October 19 board meeting, the Brockport Central School District’s Board of Education voted to move forward with a $11.335 million Capital Improvement Project that will be brought to voters on December 14, 2021. The district utilized its building condition survey (New York State required evaluation of school facilities by architects and engineers) to identify work that will be completed as part of the proposed Capital Project. The reconstruction work and improvements to be made will secure continued safety and increased comfort of the district’s learning environments, as well as protect the investment in district buildings and campus facilities. In addition to reconstruction and maintenance work
(roofing, electrical, general construction, plumbing and HVAC), the proposed project will reduce energy usage and save utility costs. The district will utilize NYS building aid (est. 87.8%) and $2.3 million from the 2014 Capital Reserve fund, allowing the district to complete the proposed $11.335 million 2021 Capital Project with no impact to local taxes. More information about the proposed Capital Project can be found on the district’s website (www.bcs1.org), under the Departments>Business tabs. My name is Jackie Smith, and I am running for my second term as Monroe County Legislator representing District 2, which encompasses the Towns of Clarkson, Hamlin, the west side of Sweden, and the Village of Brockport. I was born and raised in this community. This community is where my husband, Kevin, and I chose to stay and raise our family. I am a graduate of Brockport High School, MCC, and SUNY Empire with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Economics. I am also a 30year employee of Wegmans Food Markets. I have always been very active in our community. I’ve served as Girl Scout Leader, Rec Coach, BHS Booster Board Member, Clarkson Recreation Advisory Member, Clarkson Historical Society Treasurer, Zoning Board Member for seven years, Clarkson Town Board Member for six years, and Chair of Clarkson Veterans Park and Good Neighbor Day Committees. I was proud to earn your vote two years ago to be your voice at the County, and I have worked hard on your behalf by cutting the property tax rate, protecting small businesses and jobs during COVID, and hosting mask and food/hygiene drives to help our neighbors in need. Opinion Ballot propositions Every voter should be aware of the propositions they will be voting on. You can access your ballot by going to the Board of Elections website. Here are a few of my thoughts on the current propositions you will find on the reverse side of your ballot. I am not very knowledgeable on the NYS Constitution, Amendments to it, and the Proposition process. Please explain how a Proposition gets on the ballot worded as generally as “Right to Clean Air, Clean Water, and a Healthful Environment.” Proposition 2 seems very vague. The explanation given is to establish the right of each person to clean air and water and a healthful environment. Huh, still not clear what exactly we’re suppose to be voting on. We all want clean air and water. Who makes the determination what is “clean” or a “healthful environment”? Can I complain if my neighbor heats their home with wood that burns and produces smoke? How about proposals 3 and 4? Both limit any kind of oversight of the voting process. Proposal 3: Eliminate tenday advance voter registration. Why? The other 355 days in the year aren’t enough? Would that mean someone can register and vote the same day? Wouldn’t this take up more time at voting locations? As it is, we have early voting to accommodate those who cannot make it on voting day. Proposal 4: No Excuse Absentee Ballot Voting. Currently, the absentee requirement is for voters unable to appear because they’re out of the country, ill, or physically disabled. I hardly doubt someone is actually checking on this. So, are we looking to just send ballots out to everyone like what we saw last year? That was an abomination. Those who voted early, and live on the Westside of the city, had to wait in line up to two hours or more every day of early voting. Those people must really have wanted to vote to wait that long. If we send ballots out again, we lose any sense of a verification process. Who knows who’s filling those things out?! Do we really think poll volunteers are signature experts? And, Proposition 1 amending the Apportionment and Redistricting Process. In the explanation we’re told the current provision “violates the United States Constitution.” Really? So, in the past, a proposition was voted on and accepted by the people that “violates the United States Constitution”? The real purpose appears to be to allow the ruling political party to control redistricting without equitable input from the party not in control. Sounds Totalitarian. Debbie Wood
