An Intentional Community – Homesteads for Hope by Barbara Burke At Homesteads for Hope Community Farm, “It’s not about growing the tomatoes, it’s about growing people.” Jennyrae Brongo, along with her mother Luann, founded Homesteads for Hope in 2013 to address an important need in their family, a need felt by many families. “We are here to serve people of all abilities, with and without disabilities. We are for adults 18 years and older who graduated high school and find a void when the school bus stops. What happens to that person? There is such a shortage of services, especially since many group homes and day care services closed during the pandemic. We are about being an inclusive community; we are about participation in an intentional community. Everyone

has a job here and works to their own unique abilities. We focus on what you can do. We are open to the public, and embrace all. We are about learning and leading a purposeful life, all in nature’s classroom. Not everyone is destined for college. We teach real-life skills, something everyone needs to sustain life,” Brongo said. Homesteads for Hope is a 55-acre farm where people with disabilities are not overwhelmed by the environment. Located at 2185 Manitou Road, the farm is 10 minutes west of Downtown Rochester, directly on the wide waters of the historic Erie Canal. Homesteads’ classroom is the great outdoors, which provides a peaceful and therapeutic environment for anyone who sets foot on it, no matter their ability level. “Many in our community have never seen a large body of water, and working next to the water

opens up a whole new world. We are always outside working; nature needs us. We have no TVs, no tablets. We are about the learning experience and a hands-on approach to developing skills, life lessons, and work education that allows students to flourish in the greater community,” Brongo said. The Ready! Set! Work! program allows enrolled members the opportunity to learn to work in different business models on the farm. As they develop, further skills can be learned by volunteering to work around the farm. There are opportunities to work on the CSA Farm Share, in the Farm Store, at the Café, in the Office, at the Farmers Market, at the Barn Venue, and new this summer at the Harvest Pizza & Grill. “Working on the farm builds confidence, awareness, inclusion, and purpose. Parents tell me all the time that their children say this is their favorite place to be. Many parents say they could never have imagined their child could do the work they see them doing and enjoying. We teach and allow students to do real stuff; this is really life at the farm. We have 35 apprentices learning life work here, and they run the show. This is their farm; they own the place,” Brongo said. Everyone knows someone with autism. Statistics show that one in six people have some form of autism. The goal of Homesteads for Hope is to create a community where inclusiveness is the norm. “It is all about creating a future for our children and grandchildren. For them to not just survive, but to also be self-sustaining, to have a job and a place to lead a purposeful life,” Brongo said. There are many ways to get involved with the Homesteads for Hope Community Farm. There are three levels of membership in the Homesteads family. The Social Membership level allows participation in the day-to-day of the farm, free social programs, discounted events, and seven-day access to the farm for recreation, including hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, kayak storage, and use of picnic facilities.

The Garden Membership level is about learning to grow your own food. It includes a 5’x10’ plot in the Community Garden, soil, water access, shared tools, seeds, plants, and workshops led by farm staff, plus all benefits of the Social Program. There is also a CSA Membership that provides all the Social Membership benefits, along with a 22-week food share, providing five to eight items per week of organically grown produce, freshly picked and ready to be picked up on Thursdays. The farm provides over 100 unique varieties of flowers, tomatoes, herbs, greens, and much more. For complete details of each program’s benefits, visit the Memberships page at www. homesteadsforhope.org. Homesteads for Hope Community Farm also hosts many Community Events, and the public is invited to join in the fun. Upcoming for this year are a Father’s Day Fishing Derby, Food Truck Rodeos with Bands, Harvest Family BBQ, Barn Dances, Trunk or Treat at Halloween, and more. Every Thursday, June through October, from 5 to 8 p.m. is “Thursdays at the Farm,” featuring farm and artisan vendors, Harvest Pizza & Grill, Farm Cafe, Live Music, and more. All events are open to the public.

The barn at Homesteads for Hope is also available for rental for weddings, private events, life celebrations, fundraisers, and more. See the Homesteads for Hope website, www.homesteadsforhope.org, for details about planning an event at the “Venue with a Purpose.” There are many different ways to get involved and volunteer your time working at the farm. You can become a farmer, a “sidekick” sharing your skills to train members, or a construction volunteer, helping to maintain and repair the many structures on the farm, all of which are over 200 years old. “We rely on grants, donations, and proceeds from our events to operate our farm. The CSA program is a major part of where our operational funds come from. We appreciate all monetary donations. We want to sustain the farm and support our over 200 family members, making sure we can serve and take care of the people entrusted to us,” Brongo said. Future plans include the development of 30 acres set aside for building residential housing, a place to truly “Learn. Work. Live. Grow.” For more information on all that Homesteads for Hope Community Farm offers, go to www.homesteadsforhope.org or stop in for a visit - the doors are always open, and there is always someone around on the farm.

B-B welcomes new National Honor Society and Alumni Hall of Fame members The Byron-Bergen chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) welcomed 15 new student members on April 6. The ceremony also honored the three latest inductees to the Byron-Bergen Alumni Hall of Fame: Jerry Hulburt (1980), Angela Mech (1995), and Lacy Morgan-DeVelder (2001). The event began with a welcome and congratulations from District Superintendent Patrick McGee and Jr./Sr. High School Principal Ashley John Grillo followed by an address from Hulburt.

Hall of Fame inductee Jerry Hulburt (left) with Superintendent Patrick McGee (right).

Hulburt is currently the President of a telecommunications equipment manufacturer in Texas. He is also the owner/operator of an early childhood learning center that provides a safe, loving learning environment for 250 children. In his address, he referenced a line from the ByronBergen school song, “Learn to live and live to learn,” as a motto that he has taken with him as a life-long learner. Hulburt had also visited the school earlier that day, observing classes and enjoying lunch with several students. The traditional National Honor Society candle lighting ceremony followed. It acknowledges the high standards students in NHS must exhibit in knowledge, character, leadership, service, and scholarship. The new members were called individually to receive their honor and then the group took the NHS pledge. The ceremony was followed by the induction of Mech and Morgan-DeVelder to the Alumni Hall of Fame. Neither were able to attend in person. Mech accepted the honor via video. She currently resides in Maine where she is a Forest Health Specialist specializing in identifying tree pests and diseases. Superintendent McGee accepted the honor of behalf of Morgan-DeVelder. She is a therapist and cofounder of the Coop Cup for Brain Cancer Research, which raises money for the Wilmot Cancer Institute. National Honor Society membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but also challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. The organization has chapters in all 50 states, Canada, and beyond Provided information. Photos by Gretchen Spittler.

Comments Update on future Brockport Main Street bridge closure The contractor (Crane Hogan) has submitted a preliminary schedule for repairs of the Brockport and Albion lift bridges which are under the same contract. Final schedules are pending. The schedule pushes the Brockport closure out from September of 2022 to Spring 2023; Albion will be started mid-fall 2022. The contractor’s reasoning is that the Albion bridge is smaller with simpler technical issues; the Brockport bridge is larger with more complicated construction details and requires more preparatory work. The schedules are staggered due to the availability of mill wright expertise and manpower. According to the contracts, 480 days is allowed for completion of each job.

Certification Needed: No

The NYSDOT will call a public meeting within four to six weeks of the actual closing and will coordinate with the village to schedule the most appropriate time. We will keep the public updated as we receive new information and a final schedule. Minutes and recorded Zoom meetings of our community Bridging the Closure planning committee are public information and will be posted on our website as soon as its upgrade is completed.

Position is fulltime and benefits eligible. Salary is commensurate with experience. Please email letter of intent and resume to supervisor@clarksonny.org

Deadline to apply: Open until filled.

Thank you for highlighting Community Hygiene Bank We wanted to thank you for the article on the Community Hygiene Bank and Jubilee Christian Church (Westside News, April 10). It was extremely well written and very comprehensive. You included Jubilee’s core belief that we are called to have compassion and make a difference (Jude 1:22). This past year we have increased our community outreach through various events such as a Blessing for Bikers, Miracles on Main Street, Trunk or Treat, and Turkey in the Tent – an event in which we partnered with Jimmy Z’s Plates & Shakes. Although we reach out and request media coverage for such events, it rarely happens.

Thus, you can imagine our excitement to see such good news covering the entire front page of the Westside News. It gives people encouragement and hope in a time when it is so desperately needed. Thank you for strengthening the community connection for both Jubilee and the Community Hygiene Bank. We are also very appreciative of the “call to action” for donations to support our future distributions. Pastor Emelio, Brenda, Mary Ann, and Scarlett Jubilee Christian Church

UPDATE: All Bodine tour group members must be fully vaccinated 2 weeks prior to departure. This keeps all of our guests safe and is a requirement for several venues we travel to. An Excelsior Pass is the best method to prove you are in compliance.

Brockport Chorus celebrates spring with song The Brockport College-Community Chorus, led by music director Elizabeth Banner, will celebrate spring – and the conclusion of the 2021-22 Fine Arts Series – with their “Light Sings!” program on Saturday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place in the Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. “Given that we have finally emerged from a gray, cocoonlike Rochester winter into the bright sunshine of spring – not to mention the long pandemic – we are experiencing light and lightness in a variety of ways. What better way to experience light than with song?” relayed Banner. The program she has curated is indeed like a spring varietal: It includes country-western music by Dolly Parton, some

liturgical music, Broadway, and some music made famous by the likes of Ellie Goulding, Mumford & Sons, and The Voice winner, Jordan Smith. Tickets are $17/general, $12/senior citizens, Brockport alumni, faculty, and staff, and $9/students, and are available online at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 395-2787, or in person. SUNY Brockport’s COVID-19 prevention guidelines can be found on the ticketing website, the Fine Arts Series Facebook page, and at brockport. edu/coronavirus/spring_2022. Compliance with campus protocols is required in order to attend any performances or events. Provided information

Brockport Class of 2022 Valedictorian and Salutatorian announced Brockport High School seniors Jasmyn Miller and Merin Squillante have earned the recognition of the Class of 2022 Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively. Jasmyn and Merin were recently surprised with the news of their accomplishment when they were called down to the office. They were met by parents, siblings, BHS Principal Michael Pincelli, and Superintendent Sean Bruno to celebrate during the individual surprise announcements. Academics have always been an important part of Jasmyn Miller’s life. She is a quiet and modest leader among her peers, but respected by for drive and passion for learning. According to Jasmyn’s school counselor, Christine Howlett, her tenacity and determination have pushed her to succeed as a scholar and as an athlete. “Not only is she respected for her determination, but her openness to other’s ideas and her willingness to listen and learn from others,” says Mrs. Howlett. “This is just a part of what makes her a great leader and her grades are only a part of who this amazing young woman is.” Soccer season in particular has highlighted Jasmyn’s ability to manage her time and balance her academics and extracurricular activities. Jasmyn participates in the 3-1-3 honors program, where she splits her time between SUNY Brockport college courses and high school AP and honors courses. She is also a talented art student and part-time Brockport Central School District employee. Jasmyn’s curiosity and love of learning has driven her to be the ambitious and successful academic that she continues to be, and she

credits her supportive family as a major part of who she is and how she got here. Merin is extremely outgoing and wellgrounded, with excellent morals and value. She is a natural leader, and her teammates and peers admire her friendly, empathetic nature. Throughout her years at BHS, Merin has been involved in such a wide range of activities while balancing athletics and academics. Merin is an active member of National Honor Society and holds the position of Publicist and is a past NHS Junior Officer. She is a freshman mentor in the FLEC program at BHS, working with the high school freshman to welcome them to the building and running classes each Monday throughout the year. She commits her time to Key Club, a club that focuses on community service. Between NHS and Key Club, Merin has accumulated an abundance of volunteer hours. She is also the past President of the French Travel Club and a Student Council Class Representative. Merin is proudest of her time in dance and has been a mentor and teacher to the younger dancers in her studio. She has become an accomplished dancer, dedicating over 35 hours a week to the activity. She is also proud of her work with the Youth Activation Committee, as well as her work to bring student athletes with disabilities together in Unified Sports. She also participated in the Polar Plunge, Spread the Word Inclusion, and helped facilitate the first ever Brockport Unified Prom. Both students will speak during the Class of 2022 Commencement, taking place on Sunday, June 26, at Frontier Field. Provided information and photos

The Foundation has designated January 23 as “National Handwriting Day.” That is the date of John Hancock’s birth in 1737, the founding father known for his bold, embellished, iconic signature on the Declaration of Independence. “Put your John Hancock there” became the expression for a person’s signature conveying his or her unique identity and affirmation on any formal document. The Clarkson Historical Society expressed thanks the teachers who helped promote this in their classroom and all the parents and children who participated. Provided information

Climate Action Council leaves Rochester region out of public hearings Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,IGreece) and his regional colleagues from the Assembly Republican Conference are calling for the Climate Action Council (CAC) to hold an in-person hearing in the Rochester region for their draft scoping plan. This follows the council’s decision to not hear directly from more than a million New Yorkers who call the Rochester metropolitan area home over a plan that would dramatically change day-to-day life. The CAC’s Draft Scoping Plan would make fundamental changes to daily life for every resident and business of the state in efforts to limit greenhouse gas emissions by 85 percent to zero emissions by 2050. The draft plan would mandate 100 percent electricity in newly-constructed homes and buildings by 2024, no new natural gas appliances for home heating, cooking, water heating or clothes drying beginning in 2030, and no gasoline automobile sales by 2035. The potential costs to fully electrify a home could reach $35,800 for each residence, while adding additional costs to goods and services. While in-person public hearings are scheduled in Buffalo and Syracuse, the Rochester region was left out, leaving the people of Monroe County and surrounding counties without a voice in the draft scoping plan. “I hear from constituents every day who are frustrated by a state government that operates in secret and without public input. With the proposals included in the draft scoping plan, it is critically important that the New Yorkers we represent have an opportunity to share their thoughts and having an in-person hearing in the Rochester

area will allow for that,” said Jensen. “A proposal that could change the nature of daily life for 20 million people needs to be discussed in person, and we deserve the same opportunity as the people of Buffalo and Syracuse to do so openly.” “A policy that has the potential to affect every facet of people’s daily lives should receive input from as many New Yorkers as possible. Leaving the residents of Rochester out of this public hearing and comment process is a glaring omission, especially when the residents of Syracuse, a city with a smaller population, have been afforded that opportunity. We must always remember that when devising public policy, public scrutiny only helps those policies better serve the needs of our citizens,” said Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I, Batavia). “It is very unfortunate that the residents of Rochester could be left out of the public hearing for the Climate Action Council. Every town deserves to have a voice when it comes to such a massive change like the one drafted. Within my district is the R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant that provides thousands of jobs for the community and has a commitment to a 100% carbon-free energy by 2040, yet the CAC wants to eliminate the power plant and burden the lives of our citizens,” said Assemblyman Brian Manktelow (R,C,I-Lyons). To make a comment, New Yorkers can visit climate.ny.gov, email scopingplan@nyserda.ny.gov, or send a letter to NYSERDA, Attn: Draft Scoping Plan Comments, 17 Columbia Circle, Albany, NY 12203.
