Clarkson kicking off Comprehensive Plan with community survey The Town of Clarkson invites all residents and stakeholders to kick off its Comprehensive Plan update by participating in a community survey. The survey will be open for responses until June 28, 2021, and can be accessed at www.surveymonkey.com/r/ ClarksonCommunitySurvey. The town’s Comprehensive Plan is one of its most important documents. It identifies the community’s future vision, establishes policies and action items, and gives context to future decision-making on public and private investments. The Comprehensive Plan provides a framework for municipal budgeting, programming, and regulatory updates, while also establishing goals for future land use and development. Most importantly, the Comprehensive Plan identifies implementation strategies to help Clarkson achieve its future vision. Over time, shifts in community preferences, resident needs, local markets, demographics, and trends drive the need to revisit local community planning initiatives. Clarkson’s current Comprehensive

Plan, adopted over a decade ago in 2005, has fallen out of sync with the present-day needs and goals of the Clarkson community. Recognizing the benefits of updating the Comprehensive Plan to better inform future investment and development, the town has hired a team of planning professionals from Barton & Loguidice to lead the update process. The intent is to develop an updated Comprehensive Plan that is in alignment with the Clarkson community’s current conditions and vision. All residents, business and property owners, community leaders, and individuals with an interest in the future of the Town of Clarkson are encouraged to participate in the community survey, sharing thoughts to help leaders develop a plan that will serve to shape the Clarkson community for the next decade. The input is essential to directing this Comprehensive Plan and ensuring the new plan reflects Clarkson’s current vision and values. Provided information

Legislation introduced that would require public hearings on canal projects Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,IGreece) and Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt held a joint press conference on Tuesday, May 18, in Spencerport to introduce a bill that would require the NYS Canal Corporation to notify local governments when they plan on doing work along the Erie Canal and provide residents in the community the opportunity to have their voices heard through a local public hearing (A.7430/S.6748). The Erie Canal serves as a focal point and economic hub for many upstate communities. In order to preserve the beauty of the canal and respect residents that live along it, it’s vital that the Canal Corporation engages with taxpayers in the community who will be affected by any potential projects before beginning any work. “This legislation is imperative to ensure that homeowners living near the Erie Canal can have a voice in future projects by the Canal Corporation,” said Jensen. “Residents across the state flock to the Erie Canal for its pristine beauty, and they rightfully deserve to have a say in projects and works along the canal. I’m proud to be joined by Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt in introducing this important issue to the state Legislature.” “The Erie Canal is representative of the unique culture and history of our region, and any proposed construction to this landmark should be subject to input from

local residents,” said Senator Ortt. “Any changes made to the Erie Canal must be for the betterment of both the canal’s operation and the surrounding community. This legislation is one way we can ensure public oversight of the NYS Canal Corporation by those most impacted by any future work done on the canal.” Provided information

Polls Open from 6am-9pm only 4 Weeks Away As I go door to door campaigning and listening to your concerns, many of you have expressed the need to clean up some areas of our town. Most notably the property that is located on the west side of the entrance to West Wautoma Beach at the end of Town Line Rd. off the parkway. This is the first area people see entering Hamlin and with all the vehicles and clutter surrounding the property it does not give a favorable impression of our town. This conflict has been ongoing for several years, it has been in the courts with no real movement as of yet. This eyesore needs to be resolved!!!!! Another concern,The Duffy Mott property in the center of Town, if the remaining building were to catch fire, it could level the houses closest to it. It will take teamwork to resolve these issues and I am committed to using my proven base experience to discuss all options and bring these two important issues to a resolution. In next week’s ad I will let you know some more issues I will address. I will not be able to reach everyone door to door before the primary. If you have any concerns that you would like to speak to me about please contact me at 585-964- 2853 or e-mail:awarner002@rochester.rr.com.

Work underway to mitigate canal seepage The New York State Canal Corporation mobilized engineers and contractors on May 13 to begin mitigation efforts to address localized seepage occurring along the Erie Canal west of the Smith Street Bridge in Brockport. Out of an abundance of caution, the Canal Corporation closed the Brockport, Spencerport, and Holley guard gates and lowered the water level in this area. The Erie Canal opened for navigation on May 21, but the section between Spencerport and Holley will remain closed until further notice while repair work is underway. Updates and information will be provided at www.canals. ny.gov as the work progresses. Provided information

Safeguard Your Home While You Are On Vacation Many homeowners leave their home for extended periods while they are on vacation. The FBI recommends taking extra safety precautions during the summer months, when most residential break-ins occur. Turn off your computer, disconnect it from the Internet and discourage hackers with a password or firewall. Ask a trusted neighbor to collect your mail, so identity thieves do not find credit card and bank statements in your mailbox. Have your newspaper subscription held until you return, and leave a vehicle parked in the driveway. Secure your fine jewelry and important documents in a safe deposit box at the bank instead of in a locked desk drawer at home. Do not leave valuable objects of art or expensive electronic equipment in view of open windows to tempt burglars. Lock every door with a deadbolt, and place metal bars or sturdy wooden dowels in the track of sliding glass doors to prevent them from being forced open. Consider installing an electronic security system that automatically turns lights on and off and opens and closes window coverings at pre-timed intervals. Taking these precautions will give you peace of mind while you enjoy your vacation. For professional real estate advice, give me a call, Mary Lobene at 585-734-3362.

Music returns to the Brockport Welcome Center this summer “Summer Serenades are back – bigger and better than ever, for a 2021 Tenth Anniversary season – and we’re pretty excited,” says Jacquie Davis, Summer Serenades chairperson. “Please join us for all seven weeks of free, family friendly, live music performances throughout July and August,” add the other long time volunteer organizers. Concerts are Thursday evenings from July 15 through August 26, canal side just east of Main Street at Brockport’s Welcome Center. July concerts begin at 7 p.m. while August performances begin at 6:30 p.m. The location for the RPO on August 5 is yet to be determined. The first performance of the season, Zak’s Pack at 7 p.m. on July 15, will be the concluding event of a celebratory community day sponsored by the Village of Brockport. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., a flotilla of kayaks will arrive to help dedicate the Welcome Center ’s new adaptive kayak launch, with music by She Sings and additional events. Summer Serenades performances are: •July 15 – Zak’s Pack •July 22 – Eight Days a Week •July 29 – a surprise TBA •August 5 – The RPO (location TBA) •August 12 – Feedback •August 19 – Chris Wilson •August 29 – The Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra Attendees should bring their own chairs. Strict adherence to all COVID-19 require-

ments in place at the time of each event will be followed. An indoor rain venue is yet to be determined. Watch for more information later at www.brockport.ny.org – along with location and other details for the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performance. Starting this season, Summer Serenades and winter Cabin Fever performances will be hosted by the Village of Brockport. The all volunteer organizing committee – Bill Andrews, Terry Carbone, Jacquie Davis, Patty Kutz, Jo Matela, and Gary Skoog – looks forward to this newly established relationship and to new opportunities to further develop the arts in the Brockport community. Serenades will continue to be funded solely by donations and grants, without which the music series could not continue. The committee wishes to thank residents and local businesses for ten years of generous support. The fundraising goal for the full 2021-22 season is $7,000. Tax-deductible checks can be sent to Village of Brockport, Summer Serenades, 127 Main Street, Brockport NY 14420. Indicate on the check’s memo line that it is intended for Summer Serenades. As in the past, all contributors will be acknowledged in the season flyer. Donors at the $500 and $1,000+ levels will also be designated as sponsors and underwriters. Tips for safely sharing the roadways Warmer weather across the region means more bicycles, vehicles, and pedestrians out and about. With more people of all ages taking advantage of walking and cycling, there’s no better time for a refresher on safety, especially since May is both Global Youth Traffic Safety Month and Bike Safety Month. AAA Western and Central New York has tips for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists to share the road and keep everyone safe. Tips for Pedestrians: •Be predictable. Follow the rules of the road and obey signs and signals. •Walk on sidewalks whenever possible and cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. •If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible. •Keep alert at all times; don’t be distracted by electronic devices that take your eyes (and ears) off the road. •Be visible at all times. Wear bright clothing during the day, and wear reflective materials or use a flashlight at night.

Tips for Bicyclists: •Follow the same rules of the road as other roadway users, including riding in the same direction as traffic and following all the same traffic signs and signals. •Signal all turns. •Wear a bicycle helmet every time and on every ride. •Be visible. Wear bright colors in the daytime, reflective gear in low light conditions, and use head and taillights at night. •Remember that respect is a two-way street. Show motorists the same courtesy that you expect from them. Tips for Drivers: •Stay alert – avoid all distractions while driving. •Yield to bicyclists when turning. •Make a visual check for bicyclists by scanning mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic. •Slow down and give at least three feet of clearance when passing. •Never honk your horn at a bicyclist – it could cause them to swerve into traffic or off the roadway and crash. Canalway Challenge underway along New York’s canals Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor invites New Yorkers to take part in the Canalway Challenge in 2021 and enjoy the great outdoors along New York’s canals and Canalway Trails. Participants choose a mileage goal of 15, 90, 180, or 360 miles. They then walk, run, or cycle on the Canalway Trail or paddle on the NYS Canal System to achieve it. People with disabilities are welcome to participate in a 1st Mile Challenge by completing one mile. “As New York begins to open more, the Canalway Challenge is a great way for people to get outside and discover all they can do along the canals and Canalway Trail,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “The range of mileage options is suited to people of all ages and abilities, from those who are just taking their first steps toward fitness to more experienced athletes.” The Canalway Challenge is free and registration is open to individuals and teams. People can complete their miles in one big trip or many small ones. The 1st Mile Challenge offers people with disabilities and their family and friends opportunities to recreate together and build more active lifestyles. There are numerous places along the canals and Canalway Trail that are accessible and several that offer adaptive bikes and kayaks. New York State Canal Corporation Di-

rector Brian U. Stratton said, “New York’s Canals and adjoining trails offer unparalleled opportunities for safe, socially-distanced outdoor recreation. The Canalway Challenge showcases the tremendous investments made in both our canalside communities through Governor Cuomo’s Reimagine the Canals program, and in opening of the 750-mile Empire State Trail – the longest multi-use trail in the nation. As we continue to seek new and engaging ways to get outdoors while remaining safe and responsible, the Canal Corporation is thrilled to support this initiative and to invite all New Yorkers to experience the unmatched history and natural beauty of our magnificent Canalway Trail system.” The Canalway Challenge is funded with support from the National Park Service, the NYS Canal Corporation, and Market New York through I LOVE NY/New York State Division of Tourism as a part of the State’s Regional Economic Development Council initiative. Participants should follow all New York State Department of Health guidelines for COVID-19 safety while on the Canalway Trail and while visiting state parks, historic sites, and communities. This year ’s challenge runs through the end of October. Sign up at www. canalwaychallenge.com Provided information

the children choosing to attend the four daily online collaborative sessions or move at their own pace. Each year, the program features a new curriculum inspired by some of the nation’s most world-changing inventors — the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF) Inductees. This year’s Recharge curriculum encourages children to be confident in their ideas and explore their innovativeness though hands-on activities including: •Open Mic: Campers amplify their creative voice, reverse engineer a wireless microphone, and then develop and promote their own extraordinary invention. •Duck Chuck: Through hands-on experiments with trajectory and velocity, children build their own device to launch rubber ducks around the world. •Road Rally: Imaginations accelerate as children design nature-inspired vehicles that can zoom across land and add prototype elements for moving through air and water. •SolarBot: Campers build and take care of their very own solar-powered robotic cricket, creating protective gear, a customized habitat, and a cricket playground. A NIHF program in partnership with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Camp Invention challenges children in grades K-6 to tap into their natural curiosity and use their creativity to solve problems. Through hands-on activities, Camp Invention promotes STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning; builds confidence, leadership, perseverance, and resourcefulness; and encourages entrepreneurship – all in a fun and engaging environment. Camp Invention coming to Churchville Camp Invention®, a nationally recognized, nonprofit summer enrichment program, is coming to Fairbanks Road Elementary School in Churchville the week of July 12 through July 16, 2021. At this local camp, families can choose Camp Invention’s in-person or at-home option. And to address any uncertainty that families face when planning for the upcoming summer camp season, Camp Invention now offers the Peace of Mind Promise – where parents can switch their experience format up to six weeks before their camp start date. For its in-person option, Camp Invention will continue to adjust its in-person programs to comply with best practice safety measures to ensure the health of our campers, teachers, families, and communities. These precautions may include daily health screenings for all children and Program Team Members, the use of masks, social distancing within classrooms, providing individualized materials to limit sharing, increased sanitation practices and scheduled hygiene checks within the building, and smaller student groups with staggered lunch schedules. Programs will follow all state and regional COVID-19 guidelines. A hybrid program featuring both offline activities and optional online sessions, Camp Invention at home enables hands-on exploration by delivering an Innovator’s Toolkit, packed full of fun materials, directly to each participant. With four themed activities, step-by-step guides, and an Innovator Workshop, the program brings imagination, creative problem solving, and fun to children’s living rooms. During the at-home format, local certified instructors take the campers through the day’s activities, with

Explore Artpark to the accompaniment of a variety of music as part of Sonic Trails.

Enjoy the arts among nature at Artpark Established in 1974, Artpark is a collaboration between New York State Parks and the cultural nonprofit institution Artpark & Company. As a National Historic Landmark, the picturesque 150-acre performing and visual arts park is located along the historic Niagara River Gorge on land rich in Native American, pioneer, and early American history. Artpark & Company recently kicked off its 2021 season with the launch of interactive tour Sonic Trails. With a hyper-local and equally global perspective, Sozo Creative and Artpark have brought together some of the most influential BIPOC voices in music – the Holladay Brothers, Kronos Quartet, Rhiannon Giddens and Yo-Yo Ma, Indigenous artists curated by Michele-Elise Burnett, and DJ Spooky – to cultivate aural experiences exploring the unique geological and historic site of the Earl W. Brydges Artpark State Park located just seven miles from the Niagara Falls. Throughout the summer, audiences will have the opportunity to explore Artpark to the accompaniment of a variety of artistic worlds for free, right in their own pockets – an immersive choose-your-own-adventure. The season also includes a concert series held at the Artpark Ampitheater, featuring Blackberry Smoke (July 1), Fitz and the Tantrums (July 6), Brothers Osborne (August 3), Joe Russo’s Almost Dead (August 20), Wilco + Sleater-Kinney (August 26), and Glass Animals (August 30). Additional concerts are yet to be announced. Artpark’s New Music in the Park is an eclectic outdoor music series running June

13 through August 22 that features world, jazz, chamber, and percussion music presented on the grounds of the park. Not only will these events be the perfect antidote for cabin fever, but they also reflect Artpark’s commitment to presenting world-class artists that challenge audiences to open their minds (and hearts) to new sounds and experiences. Free Family Saturdays is Artpark’s most beloved long-lasting family program. Afternoons are filled with creative handson discovery and live performances for all ages. A variety of “make and take” themed workshops are available at each and every installment of Family Saturdays. Also featured weekly are these self-directed play spaces: Paint Space, Costume Closet, Sand Mountain, Face Paint, Pottery Wheel, and Clay Hand Building. Additional programs throughout the summer include the Fairy House Festival on June 12; Strawberry Moon Festival on June 19; Movies in the Park, featuring Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and a lineup of over twenty film screenings; dance, theatre, circus, and children’s performances; interactive installations; and camps and family programs. Artpark is a National Wildlife Federation Backyard Wildlife Habitat, a National Audubon Society birding site (along the Niagara River Corridor), and a popular destination for hiking, picnics, and fishing. Give your gas grill a safety check before you fire it up With Memorial Day weekend approaching and Father’s Day picnics and backyard graduation parties soon to follow, grilling season is officially here. In addition to practicing safe social distancing, you’ll also want to practice the safe operation of your gas grill. Sixty-one percent of U.S. households own a gas grill, according to a 2020 survey conducted by the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association. And while that means lots of great smells wafting through your neighborhood as you take your evening walk, it also means an increased risk on your block for residential fires, and their chance for injury and property loss. “As the grilling season gets underway, we hear a lot about safe food handling, but we also need to be reminded of safety practices for maintaining and operating our gas grills,” said Patricia Salzer, RD, Wellbeing Engagement Consultant at Ex-

cellus BlueCross BlueShield. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that, on average, there are 10,600 home fires started by grills each year, with gas grills contributing to a higher number of fires than charcoal grills. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges backyard chefs to check their grills before their first use of the season and then re-check them regularly. The agency offers the following safety tips: •Keep the grill clean. Regularly cleaning the grill, as described in the owner’s manual, and also cleaning the grease trap will reduce the risk of flare-ups and grease fires. •Visually inspect the hoses on a gas grill for cracking, brittleness, holes, and leaks. Make sure there are no sharp bends in the hose or tubing and that all connections are secure. Replace if necessary. •Check for propane gas leaks. Open the gas supply valve fully and apply a soapy solution with a brush at the connection point. If bubbles appear, there is a leak. Try tightening the tank connection. If that doesn’t stop the leak, close the gas valve and have the grill repaired by a qualified professional. •Check to see if your gas grill has been recalled by going to SaferProducts.gov. If the grill has been recalled, contact the manufacturer and stop using it until you get a repair or replacement. “Use grills outside only in a well-ventilated area, and never indoors or in a garage, breezeway, carport, porch or under a surface that will burn,” cautions Salzer. Thinking of Selling? Now is the perfect market for you! Call one of our experienced agents today! Brockport Central School District appoints Director of Learning and Staff Development After an extensive interview process, the Brockport Central School District has selected Mr. Brandon Broughton as the Director of Learning and Staff Development. Mr. Broughton’s appointment was approved by Brockport’s Board of Education during the May 18 BOE meeting. He will begin his new position this summer. Broughton began his career in education in Brockport, teaching at the Hill School for eleven years. He then served as an Assistant Principal for three years before being promoted to Principal of the Hill School, where he has been for the last six years. “Having worked in the district for twenty years, and also being a resident, I am very invested in the success of our schools and look forward to contributing to our continuous improvement as a district,” says Broughton. “I am very proud of the work we have done at Hill School and grateful for all the wonderful relationships and memories I have from my time there. In all my different experiences at Hill School, student learning has always been at the forefront of my focus, and I look forward to bringing that perspective to my new role.”

“We are very excited to have Brandon take on this new role within our District,” says Superintendent Sean Bruno. “Throughout Brandon’s tenure at Brockport, he has built strong working relationships with students, faculty, staff, colleagues and parents. His proven ability to positively and collaboratively move staff towards meeting school and district goals will be one of his many strengths as he transitions into this PK-12 Brandon Broughton position.” The Brockport Central School District will begin its search for the next Hill School Principal and hope to bring a successful candidate to the Board of Education for approval in July.
