Hilton Networking Group donates $1,400 to Cadet Cupboard The Hilton Networking Group, a private, no-cost organization of individual business owners and community leaders that serve the Hilton community, recently made a $1,400 donation to the Hilton School District Cadet Cupboard. Launched in 2013 and sponsored by the Hilton Central School District and Hilton Education Foundation, the Cadet Cupboard provides Hilton students with the opportunity to participate in a weekend backpack program that gives children access to essential, nutritious food that they can subtly take home and safely prepare on their own. Greece Historic Resources Survey now available to view The Town of Greece is celebrating its 200th bicentennial anniversary this year. Throughout 2022, the town will be celebrating this significant milestone with a variety of events and services for residents that commemorate its two hundred year history and progress as a town and community. As part of that effort, Supervisor Reilich has announced the release of the Town of Greece’s Bicentennial Historic Resources Survey. The survey is an online, living archive of maps, images, information, and historical narratives documenting Greece’s heritage in an accessible format that is easy to navigate for people of all ages. The survey will be maintained by the Town Historian and utilized to share the highlights of town history that have contributed to Greece being the community it is today.
“Think of it as a book with unlimited pages, where we can share information about our history in new and creative ways that are engaging to residents of all ages,” said Supervisor Reilich. “What better way to celebrate the Town’s bicentennial than reflecting on our history, the neighborhoods, business districts, waterways and people that are the fabric of our community and I invite and encourage all of Greece’s residents to take the time to utilize it.” The Bicentennial Historic Resources Survey is the completion of another recommendation of the Town’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan. Lieutenant Peter Zambuto of the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Office (MCSO) received the Sheriff Carl F. Draxler Award at the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute Winter Conference in Albany on January 18. The award is given in recognition of career achievements and consistent, conscientious devotion to duty. Lt. Zambuto began his career as an intern with the MCSO in 1999, became a Trainee in 2000, and was hired as a Part-Time Deputy in 2002. He joined the Ogden Police Department in 2003 as a Full-Time Police Officer. He returned to the MCSO in 2006 and was assigned to Road Patrol. Lt. Zambuto became a Field Training Officer, NYS DCJS Instructor, and later accepted an assignment in the Training Unit as the Police Bureau Training Coordinator. During his tenure he positively impacted many recruits as they began their careers and ensured valuable training was delivered during In-Service Trainings. Promoted to Sergeant in 2015, Lt. Zambuto served as a Platoon Sergeant until being assigned as the Sergeant of the Traffic Enforcement Unit. In 2018, he accepted an assignment as the Community Services and Special Events Sergeant. During this assignment, he coordinated Community Services and engagement for the entire Sheriff ’s Office, initiated the Project Lifesaver Program, and coordinated the department’s transition to a new radio system. He also planned and coordinated major events, including the
large-scale funeral for Congresswoman Louise Slaughter in 2018, which was attended by a former President of the United States and many national, state, and local elected officials and dignitaries. Lt. Zambuto also planned and coordinated the 2019 Senior PGA golf tournament at Oak Hill Country Club and the 2019 Greater Rochester International Airshow, with both events encompassing multiple days with thousands in attendance. In the spring of 2020, Lt. Zambuto was integral in the planning, organizing, and coordinating of the MCSO’s COVID operations. In all of these events, Lt. Zambuto volunteered to come in during his time off, stay late, complete any task, and never refused a request for assistance. He also trained other members to perform the functions he was responsible for, providing redundancy if needed. Lt. Zambuto was promoted to his present rank in December 2020 and is assigned as a 3rd Platoon Watch Commander. He was also recently selected to serve as the Class Counselor for the upcoming Supervisor’s School. A statement posted on Twitter by the MCSO said, “Lt. Zambuto’s involvement and efforts in incidents, events, and initiatives has been vital, and his devotion to duty and selflessness is an example to others. The example he sets is an ideal level of performance for a Police Officer and leader.” Provided information

Brockport CSD names new Director of Transportation Brockport Central School District is pleased to announce that Chuck Studier was appointed as the district’s new Director of Transportation during the January 18, 2022, Board of Education meeting. Studier is a native of Brockport and a graduate of BCSD. He started with the District in August of 2001 as a substitute bus driver, became a permanent Chuck Studier driver in 2002, and was named Bus Operations Supervisor in 2008. In January of 2021, he was promoted to Brockport’s Head Bus Driver. Studier will officially start as the District’s Director of Transportation on Monday, January 24. Hilton Lions Club adds braille books to Parma Public Library The Hilton Lions Club made a big impact locally when they were able to purchase 28 large print and braille books for the Parma Public Library through a Lions state grant from the MD 20 SEE (Screening Eyes Early) program. January is Braille Literacy Month so the timing could not be better. The books are all for youth and will be available through the inter-library lending program for any readers who want them. Library Director Amy Hogue said it is important for children to develop a reading habit at a young age and how very useful the new materials will be for many children. politically speaking Disappointed by failure to invest in libraries On January 18, Gov. Hochul unveiled her first state budget proposal. While there was plenty to be encouraged by, including funds for health care, nursing homes, education and infrastructure, there is still reason for concern. One of my disappointments is the treatment of New York’s libraries. Over the past 22 months, libraries across our state have continually put those they serve first. Whether adapting to online programming, expanding e-collections and providing internet access when it was lacking, libraries have been there for their community when needed most. In a budget proposal that raised state spending by $4 billion, libraries would receive only a $2 million increase in aid, and worse, a $20 million decrease in construction aid. This would have a devastating impact on the ability of communities to invest in libraries that meet 21st century needs, and the need is felt in every community of our state. On a recent statewide tour of libraries with the chairs of the Assembly and Senate Library Committees, I heard from libraries in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse on how communities are in need of libraries to be all things for all people, often outside of traditional services. Failure to invest in libraries is a failure to invest in our communities. It will now fall on the Legislature to fight, in a bipartisan manner, to restore this funding and more to ensure New York state has libraries that continue to meet the needs of those they serve now and into the future. Health experts find that heavy storms can predict the risk of germs in treated Great Lakes drinking water Across the Great Lakes basin, hundreds of water utilities treat water from the Great Lakes and deliver safe, highquality drinking water to nearly 40 million residents. The risk of getting a stomach bug from this treated drinking water is very low – but there is some risk. A new study of environmental and health data from four cities in Canada and in the United States shows that the risk of getting sick from treated Great Lakes drinking water can increase after certain weather events. The Health Professionals Advisory Board of the International Joint Commission recently published their findings in a new Phase 2 report on their proof-of-concept pilot study “Transboundary Monitoring of Environmental Factors and their Influence on Waterborne Protozoan Acute Gastrointestinal Illnesses in Cities that Source Water from the Great Lakes.” The study looked at health, weather, and water quality data for the cities of Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario (on Lake Ontario) and Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wisconsin (on Lake Michigan). The study found a link between heavy precipitation and public health: no matter the season, more people got stomach bugs a few weeks following a big storm. “The data show that there is a consistent pattern: no matter what time of year, if it was dry and then there was heavy precipitation, about three to seven weeks afterwards there were more reported cases of people getting sick from either of the two waterborne germs we were tracking, giardia and cryptosporidium,” said Dr. Elaine Faustman, US co-chair of the board, professor and director of the Institute for Risk Analysis and Risk Communication at the University of Washington. The pattern of heavy precipitation preceding the increased risk of acute gastrointestinal illness points to gaps in monitoring and reporting on the Great Lakes as the source of treated drinking water.
“One of the big challenges doing this study was that the data were scattered across many agencies, and so one of the board’s recommendations is to have a binational clearinghouse of these data indicators,” said Dr. Laurie Chan, Canadian co-chair of the board, professor and Canada research chair in toxicology and environmental health at the University of Ottawa. The board was assisted by the cooperation of water utilities and public health agencies in the four study cities that provided the requested data. The board chose these four cities for the study with the purpose to compare two major cities on the same lake, for two lakes, with one pair in Canada and the other in the United States. The study did not compare data with any other metropolitan areas or smaller communities on other lakes. “Our proof-of-concept study demonstrated that, when available, these data are good indicators for the health safety of the Great Lakes as our drinking water source. Public health can be better protected with greater monitoring and reporting on source water quality, as well as with increased investments in surveillance and treatment infrastructure,” said Dr. Seth Foldy, report co-author, member of the board and former director of epidemiology, informatics and preparedness at Denver Public Health. “Climate change is expected to increase extreme rain events in the Great Lakes which, particularly after a dry period, can increase the risk of waterborne illness from drinking water. So, it’s imperative that governments address gaps in monitoring to reduce that health risk to the public,” said Dr. Tim Takaro, professor of health sciences at Simon Fraser University who served as the Canadian co-chair of the board from 2015 to 2020. Roberts Wesleyan Hall of Famer, Jack Fraser has died Roberts Wesleyan athletics hall of fame member, Jack Fraser passed away at Unity Hospital on January 9, 2022, at the age of 88. Fraser was a 1957 graduate of Roberts and had a long, rich history in Roberts Wesleyan athletics as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator. Fraser was a member of the men’s basketball team from 1953 to 1957. He finished his career with 919 points, averaging 12.1 points per game over 76 total games. Fraser holds the record for free throw attempts in a season with 247. Ten years after graduating from Roberts, Fraser returned to the athletics department to serve as Athletics Director and head coach for the men’s basketball team. Fraser coached basketball for seven seasons until 1974 when he transitioned to head coach for the men’s soccer team from 1974 to 1980. During his stretch with the soccer team, Fraser led the men to the NAIA National Championship game (1979). It was one of only three times that had been accomplished as a member of the NAIA. Fraser also earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors that season. Fraser served as Athletics Director for 13 years (1967 to 1980). He was inducted into the Roberts Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982. “The Roberts community mourns the loss of Coach Fraser,” said Bob Segave, current Roberts Director of Athletics. “A friend and coach to many, Jack was a larger than life person to me who became a good friend. He was always there with his trademark strong handshake and a word of encouragement. He was always interested in the state of athletics at the college. As he shared his stories of the successes and challenges that came with the Director of Athletics chair, he was able to inspire me with his strong voice. I will miss that voice, but when days are tough I will hear my friend Jack’s strong voice guiding me.” Jack is survived by wife Priscilla, sons John (Laurie) and James (Teresa) and daughter Jennifer (David), stepsons Andrew (Kimberly) and David (Jodi); 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was born November 9, 1933, in Monticello, in the Catskill mountains. He was an avid sports fan his entire life and had a love for the New York Yankees and Buffalo Bills. A special achievement for Fraser came at the age of 86 when he recorded a hole-in-one at Churchville Golf Course on the fourth hole, witnessed by long-time family friend and Roberts grad David Heimberger.
In his later years, Jack enjoyed traveling with his wife Priscilla to beautiful parts of the country to visit children and grandchildren in Tennessee, Colorado, and Arizona. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s memory can be sent to the Roberts Wesleyan College Athletic Department. A celebration of life will be held on February 19 at Pearce Memorial Church on the Roberts campus, 4322 Buffalo Road, North Chili. •Rodas, Douglas, “Doug,” died January 13, 2022 at Unity Hospital. Born on July 20, 1962, Doug was a son of the late Luther and Shirley (Rose) Rodas. He is survived by his wife, Dawn; step-daughter Erica (Mark) Kuntz; daughter Connie Rodas; granddaughter Julianna Kuntz; and three siblings. After graduation from Brockport High School, he became an electrician working at SUNY Brockport, where he met the love of his life, his wife Dawn (Trolley) Rodas. He loved the great outdoors, including hunting, fishing, and camping, classic cars, motorcycles, and spending quality time with his family. Doug will also be remembered for his gentle and loving nature with all animals, especially Cocker Spaniels and his two Yellow Labs, Harley and Sammie. There were no prior calling hours. Ruth Alexander Logan Churchville – Ruth Alexander Logan, 60, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 16, 2022 with her husband and children by her side. Ruth was born August 20, 1961, daughter of the late David and Gladys Alexander. Ruth lived with commitment, integrity and joy. A life-long member of the Churchville community, Ruth served on the staff of Roberts Wesleyan College since 1990. Her first role was in the Office of Development for 10 years, until she was asked to serve as Director of Human Resources. In 2004 she was appointed as the Vice President for Administration and became a member of the President’s Cabinet. In 2017 she transitioned to Vice President for Student and Organizational Development, overseeing employees, student life, athletics, emergency response, diversity initiatives and history/archives. Her career and ministry at Roberts Wesleyan College spanned 30 years and was focused on the high calling of transformational Christian education and she used her voice and role to support, clarify, mentor and encourage both staff and students alike. Ruth will also be remembered as an avid gardener who enjoyed tending to her extensive flower beds. She and her husband had a passion for travel, taking trips around the world. However, her greatest joy was caring for her 2 children and 5 grandchildren. Ruth spent her life creating a home filled with grace and love. Ruth’s faith in God was her upmost priority, living her life as a reflection of the Lord’s love to those around her. She was an active member of Northgate Free Methodist Church and was blessed by the friendships and fellowship of that community. Holding on to her memory is her husband of 37 years, Mark Logan; son, Tyler (Rebecca) Logan; daughter, Elise (Shane) Fraser; brothers, David (Barbara), Brad, Lance (Kathy); and 5 beautiful grandchildren, Jack, Evelyn Grace, Henry, Callie and Banks. A lifelong member of St. John The Evangelist Church in Spencerport, Jude spent many years employed by General Motors as a millwright. Jude was preceded in death by one daughter, Kristeen; his parents; and siblings, John Eichas, Margaret Morrill, Anna Eichas, Viola Almeter, Rita Maynard, Theresa Blodgett, and Jane Eichas. Jude is survived by his wife, Anne Eichas; children, Gary Eichas (Stephanie), Wayne Eichas (Janet), Jude Eichas (Cherry Mee), Michele Newman (Dave), and Gail Kettles (John); siblings, Mary Eichas-Gavigan, Bob Eichas (Maria), George Eichas, Art Eichas, and Charles Eichas. Marjorie A. Bates Cunningham Marjorie A. Bates Cunningham passed away peacefully at home on January 12, 2022. She was born in Batavia, a daughter of the late Kenneth and Marion Welker Bates. She will be remembered as a very caring mother, grandma and lady who touched the hearts of her family and friends. A devout catholic, she was a member of St. Brigid Church, The Ladies of Charity of the church and was an honorary member of the Bergen Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Turner Funeral Home in Bergen as a greeter. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, George F. Cunningham; her daughter, Lisa Crosier (Chuck Bailey); her son, Lewis Cunningham (Linda); grandchildren, Michael Crosier (Lexi) and Stacey Crosier Cody (Chris Cody) and her great grandchildren whom she adored, Mckenzie and Cayden. Ronald Elmer Gouger Ronald Elmer Gouger passed away on 12/23/2021 at age 88 at The Auberge at Peoria Assisted Living and Memory Care Center in Arizona (near Phoenix). Ronald was born in Rochester, New York on July 8th, 1933, to Elmer LeRoy “Bud” Gouger and Ruth Bock (Nix). Ronald is survived by his four children: Alan Gouger, Ronald Gouger, Laura Jean Haberger, Robert Gouger Allen, 4 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Ronald graduated from Charlotte High School in Rochester NY. After his service in the Army, he worked at Frieden Corp and then was hired by Kodak where he worked in the Roll Coating division until he retired in 1991. He was active in the Kodak Camera Club and Camera Rochester, entering many Kodak salons where he won several awards. After his Kodak retirement, he taught color film printing. Students compared their test tube samples to the pH chart to determine if the creek is able to support a range of healthy life forms.

Her mission is to increase awareness and inspire young people to protect this vital resource. Fifth-grade classes had just finished a standard science unit on water and are venturing into a study of ecosystems and macro invertebrates, so Stoss’s presentation made an excellent learning bridge. Participating students learned about the unexpectedly high amount of water we use every day, the part water plays in building healthy ecosystems, the many threats to water quality, and practical actions they can take to cut down on pollution. They were also introduced to the concept of pH and learned the effects acid rain has on waterways. Students were then able to do several hands-on experiments with lab equipment and water samples from Irondequoit Creek that Stoss supplied. With the help of Churchville-Chili Enrichment Specialists Andrea Lynch and Stephanie Ricci, students tested the water’s pH and then examined their healthy stream water for myriad life forms, including tiny fish, crane fly larvae, and water beetles. Emergency resources available for older adults this winter Emergency assistance and other resources are available to help ensure the safety of older adults – and all New Yorkers – during the winter months. “Winter has always been an important time to check in on family, loved ones, and neighbors to make sure they are safe,”said Greg Olsen, Director of the New York State Office for the Aging. “This kind of outreach is even more important now, during the pandemic, as older adults, persons with disabilities, and the chronically ill face even more extreme levels of social isolation that can make them especially vulnerable to winter safety risks at home.” Emergency Heating Assistance through HEAP Individuals facing a home-heating emergency may be eligible for assistance through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP), which helps low-income people pay
the cost of heating their homes. The emergency benefit opened on January 3, 2022 and is available for low-income older adults and other New Yorkers whose home heating is either shut off or scheduled to be shut off, as well as for individuals who are running out of home heating fuel or other deliverable heat sources. Regular HEAP Benefits Lower-income New Yorkers may also be eligible for regular (non-emergency) HEAP benefits to help pay for heating your home. Eligibility and benefits are based on income, household size, the primary heating source, and the presence of a household member who is under age six, age 60 or older, or permanently disabled. Bird feeding is a popular pastime for homeowners, particularly during the winter months. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says more than 50 million North Americans feed wild birds.
