Fertilizer and fertilizer terms by Kristina Gabalski

In the last column, we focused on nitrogen and why it is important for plants. Nitrogen is one of the major plant nutrients, and fertilizers contain nutrients. They are not “plant foods,” however. C-C’s Arguien commits to Iona College McKenna Arguien, one of the most impressive runners in Churchville-Chili High School history, signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for Iona College’s Division 1 XC/Track and Field on February 8, in a ceremony at the high school. The senior won an athletic and academic scholarship from the college and is looking forward to majoring in secondary education mathematics and continuing her sports career with Iona’s Gael Nation. Arguien has built an impressive record of accomplishment as a Churchville-Chili Saint. The senior ran varsity cross country, indoor track, and track and field for all four years of high school. In ninth grade, the young runner was honored with the school’s Most Improved Athlete award for all three disciplines. She was repeatedly chosen as MVP on the three teams and was team captain in both grades 11 and 12. Named to All-Section V for XC in grades 10-12, Arguien was also selected for AllGreater Rochester First Team for XC as a

senior and sophomore with honorable mention as a junior. She has participated in the High School National Championships meet for track and field, the NY State meet for XC and indoor track and field, and was the Monroe County Champion for 3,000 meters in indoor track for 2019-20. Arguien holds personal records of 4:52 for 1,500 meters and 10:40 for 3,000 meters. Varsity XC Coach Paul Glor said, “This year, McKenna placed third at XC Sectionals as an individual, helping her team win the first girls XC Sectional Team Title in 43 years of school history!” In addition to excelling in sport, Arguien was a NYS scholar athlete (GPA of 90.0 or above) for every quarter in high school and received the Monroe County Young Citizen of the Year Award in 2021. She is a member of National Honor Society and Foreign Language Honor Society, president of the school’s Leo Club and vice president of Peer Tutoring, and volunteers in her community. “I chose Iona because I hope to be a math teacher at the secondary level and they have a great program for that,” Arguien said. “Their XC program is also top rated. I’d love to be a coach, as well. I’ve loved working with my coaches: They’ve done so much for me.” Arguien is the daughter of Tim and Katie Arguien, and the youngest of three sisters – all graduates of Churchville-Chili High School and outstanding athletes in their own right. Wreaths Across America Radio will be holding a series of five roundtable discussions in 2022. These discussions are focused on veteran healing through shared stories of resilience, purpose, and success. This first discussion will air on Thursday, March 24, at 7 p.m. and can be heard exclusively on Wreaths Across America Radio. The March RoundTable will focus on Military Caregivers with a special emphasis on Vietnam-era veterans. Guest panelists – Melissa Comeau, Director of the American Red Cross Military and Veteran Caregiver Network, and Molly Brooks, CEO, and Founder of Hero’s Bridge – will be interviewed by Wreaths Across America’s Executive Director Karen Worcester and Director of Military & Veteran Outreach, former United States Army Captain Joe Regan. “It is important for us to understand that

nearly half of our veterans are over the age of 65. These men and women are more likely to be managing two or more chronic conditions when compared to their non-veteran peers and they account for over half of veteran suicide deaths,” said Reagan. “Their care often is the responsibility of their loved ones – spouses and children. All of us share a responsibility to fulfill President Lincoln’s promise to ‘care for those who borne the battle’ and because of that Wreaths Across America is proud to bring together a team of people enabling those caregivers to help create a better understanding of the veteran’s and caregiver’s experience.” Listen live at wreathsacrossamerica. org/radio and via the iHeart Radio app, or download it at the App Store or on Google. Opinion We all want the best for our community I would like to thank Mr. Doug Beach for responding (Westside News, March 13) to my letter (Westside News, March 6). Crime is an emotional issue. I concede that scientific studies and statistics offer no comfort to crime victims or their families. All of us sympathize with victims of crime and the desire to punish the criminal; that is our common humanity. No one – Democrat, Republican, or independent – wants people to suffer or for those that needlessly cause suffering in others to go unpunished. Politicians know this. It is pure demagoguery for local politicians to appeal to emotions and prejudices rather than use rational arguments. Mr. Beach’s example of Darrell Brooks, the alleged Christmas parade crasher, I think proves the case. Congressman Chris Jacobs and State Senator Rob Ortt claim that New York’s bail reform law is a cause for the increase in crime. First, Mr. Brooks paid cash bail which means that even if

New York had no reform law, Mr. Brooks would have been free to commit the alleged crime. Second, the incident happened in Waukesha, Wisconsin. New York law does not extend to Wisconsin. The Bail Reform Law is irrelevant, it never was the issue; it is the emotional effect that Mr. Jacobs and Mr. Ortt are promoting. Mr. Jacobs and Mr. Ortt are using demagoguery and fear to garner votes because they have no rational arguments. What I find most disturbing in their ad is the idea that some people feel different; that “we” should dislike “those people” and “we” have moral superiority over “those people.” We all want safe streets and safe communities. We all want what is best for our communities. Mr. Jacobs and Mr. Ortt’s ad is designed to divide us instead of working to improve our communities. William Fine Clarkson
