As a result, we initiated an unprecedented mobilization of ambulance services, fire companies and others so we could pool our efforts. I thank RocMaidan, American Medical Response, Monroe Ambulance and our area fire companies and first responders for joining together to provide this important humanitarian aid to the people of Ukraine.” Volodymyr Pavyluk, president of RocMaidan, the local organization overseeing humanitarian aid to Ukraine,

Hamlin Recreation offering online esports gaming The Hamlin Recreation department has joined forces with GGLeagues, an online esports gaming company, to bring in a new program that offers players a safe and fun way to participate in a community activity from home. Esports is a rapidly growing competition venue around the world. While not going worldwide, Hamlin Recreation is going statewide by participating in the New York State Esports Rec League through GGLeagues. Hamlin Rec is excited to be offering this new opportunity to the area. Not only will the esports experience provide players with a safe alternative to getting together in person, it also provides an opportunity to compete in an environment for those who may not be able to, or choose not to, play traditional sports. “GGLeagues is excited to be partnering with Hamlin Recreation to bring esports to their community. Esports continues to grow and it’s communities like Hamlin’s who are at the forefront of bringing esports to recreational gamers. We are thrilled to be empowering our partners to provide fun, safe esports competitions for players of all skills and ages,” said Erich Bao, CEO of GGLeagues. Spring 2022 Season Leagues (April through June) Games offered through Hamlin Recreation include Rocket League (3v3, any device), Rocket League (1v1, any device), Madden22 (1v1, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S), Super Smash Bros. (1v1, Nintendo Switch), Fortnite (Solos, any device), Fortnite (Duos, any device), and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (1v1, Nintendo Switch). There are three age groups: youth division (ages 8-12), teen division (ages 13-18), and adult division (ages 18+). The season starts the week of April 13 with games be-

ing played on varying days depending on the game title. Players will participate from their own homes and by purchasing a GGLeagues spring esports pass for $40, can compete in as many different games as they would like. The registration deadline for the spring season is April 13. Throughout 2022, GGLeagues will be offering esports leagues, educational events, free gaming events, and more in the Hamlin community. Leagues will be run online through GGLeagues and will consist of an eight-week season during which games will be at the same time and day each week with a flexible rescheduling policy. At the end of the season, players will participate in a two week playoff and championship event to crown the champion. All games will be played within the New York state region. Players must to register through https://app. ggleagues.com/organization/hamlin-recreation and the winner of the league will be crowned the champion of the New York State region. Winners for each region will receive a GGLeagues champion shirt and medal. To play, one must have a console/computer to play on, an email address, own the game they are registering to play, and have the ability to play live. All games are monitored by GGLeagues and players are held to a code of conduct to maintain a fun and safe gaming atmosphere. More information on this new program is available at https://www. ggleagues.com/page/esports-passes. Information for parents can be found on the GGLeagues Parents Page at https://www.ggleagues.com/parents. Provided information

Lions hold successful eye screening in Hilton Grace Engelbrecht from the Parma Public Library invited members of the Hilton Lions Club to conduct youth eye screening at the library during winter break. Using a Welch Allyn Spot camera, the Lions were able to screen for defects such as Myopia (nearsightedness), Hyperopia (farsightedness), Anisometropia (unequal refractive power), Astigmatism (irregular eye shape) and Strabismus (eye misalignment). The camera is held about three feet from a child’s face and an image is captured in seconds.

Upcoming blood drives The American Red Cross blood supply remains vulnerable, and individuals are urged to schedule a blood or platelet donation. To make an appointment, use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org, or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). For a limited time, the Red Cross has resumed testing all blood, platelet, and plasma donations for COVID-19 antibodies. Plasma from routine donations that have high levels of COVID-19 antibodies may be used as convalescent plasma to help meet the needs of COVID-19 patients with weakened immune systems. All who donate blood or platelets in March will get a $10 e-gift card, thanks to Fanatics. Plus, donors will automatically be entered for a chance to win a trip for two to the 2022 MLB® All-Star Game® in Los Angeles, California. Details are available at rcblood.org/team. Upcoming blood donation opportunities: •March 22, 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., Spencerport Fire District, 175 Lyell Avenue, Spencerport; •March 23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Unity Hospital, 1555 Long Pond Road, Rochester; •March 24, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Seymour Library, 161 East Avenue, Brockport; •March 25, noon to 5 p.m., Westside Family YMCA, 920 Elmgrove Road, Rochester; •March 29, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., St. Leo’s Church, 110 Old Hojack Lane, Hilton; •March 29, 2 to 7 p.m., Clarkson Lodge, 3645 Lake Road, Brockport; •March 30, 1 to 6 p.m., Brockport Firemen’s Exempt Club, 248 West Avenue, Brockport; •March 30, 1 to 6 p.m., Chili Community Center, 3237 Chili Avenue, Rochester. The parents were immediately informed as to whether the child “passed” this screening or should be seen by an eye care professional. Guided by the fact that 80% of a child’s learning and development requires healthy, corrected vision, these free screening are very important. Dr. Edward Cordes, National Chairman of the SEE (Screening Eyes Early) program, has stated that a screening event that has one child identified for further care is a success, and using the $7,000 camera, the Hilton Lions Club members found two. Controversy surrounds planned SUNY Brockport event Jalil Muntaqim is scheduled to be at the SUNY Brockport campus on April 6 to speak at an event entitled, “History of Black Resistance, U.S. Political Prisoners & Genocide: A Conversation with Jalil Muntaqim.” He was invited by a faculty member who was approved for a Promoting Excellence in Diversity grant. The event is described in the college’s events calendar as an “intellectual conversation on his time with the Black Panthers and serving nearly 50 years as a political prisoner.” A note at the bottom of the listing states that “SUNY Brockport does not endorse the characterization of this event.” Muntaqim, then known as Anthony Bottom, was convicted in 1971 for killing two New York City Police officers - Waverly Jones and Joseph Piagentini. He served 49 years in prison and moved to Rochester after being paroled in 2020. The event has sparked controversy in the community with many outraged that the college would give a convicted murderer a platform to speak. In a letter to the college community, SUNY Brockport President Heidi Macpherson wrote, “We do not support the violence exhibited in Mr. Muntaqim’s previous crimes, and his presence on campus does not imply endorsement of his views or past actions. However, we believe in freedom of speech. SUNY Brockport has routinely held speaking events involving controversial speakers from various background and viewpoints, and will continue to do so. These conversations are uncomfortable. They are meant to be. They’re about gaining a new perspective.” Assemblyman Josh Jensen asked the college to rescind the invitation. “What type of message would we be sending to young college students to call someone who played a role in the assassination of two members of law enforcement a ‘political prisoner?’ What message does it send to criminal justice majors on campus? What message does it send to our law enforcement? Allowing for academic free-

dom and diversity of thought among college students is incredibly important, however, granting this opportunity to a convicted cop killer is wholly misguided.” Assemblyman Steve Hawley said, “Unless Mr. Bottom plans on speaking about how remorseful he is for his actions, he has no place on a SUNY campus, especially not as a paid speaker. I very much so hope a closer review of grant applications will be forthcoming.” The funding for the event was pulled on March 16. SUNY Brockport’s Chief Diversity Officer, Damita Davis, released the following statement: “Over the last several days, we have received new information regarding a Promoting Excellence in Diversity Grant awarded to allow one of our faculty members to bring Jalil Muntaqim to campus. As a result, the committee has rescinded the grant and no funding will be used to pay the speaker. We are not, however, cancelling the event. Academic freedom allows our faculty to invite guests of their choosing to campus to address our students. Effective immediately, we will be pausing the PED grant program while a thorough review and revision of the grant application process can take place.” Daniel P. Varrenti, former Brockport Chief of Police and SUNY Brockport Adjunct Professor, said, “The reason we don’t invite these people to campus is because they committed heinous crimes. Colleges should be striving to promote safe campuses while instilling values and morals not providing stages to those that have destroyed lives of other people.” Varrenti submitted his resignation on March 11, after 22 years teaching at the college. “Facilitating a murderer to speak at SUNY Brockport is just wrong and embarrassing and goes against everything I was taught and believe in.” Go to westsidenewsny.com to read the full statements of President Macpherson, Assemblyman Jensen, Assemblyman Hawley, and former Chief Varrenti.

to 80, provide personal insights, professional suggestions, and creative experiences to help readers better understand and cope with the pandemic. Recognizing that we have all experienced some level of trauma, grief, and loss over the last two years, Werth says there are ways to become more resilient as a result of our pandemic experiences. The book is a privately funded humanitarian project. All profits from the sale of the book are being donated to The Society of Refugee Healthcare Providers (www.refugeesociety.org), an international, locally-based 501(c)(3) charity organization. A few days after the meeting, Kiwanis President Wendy Powers presented Werth with a check for $200 from the club for The Society of Refugee Healthcare Providers. According to Werth, The Society provides a forum and educational platform (along with resources) to help caregivers meet the challenges of caring for refugees as well as to connect with other caregivers around the world to understand best practices and stay up to date on issues regarding the appropriate delivery of healthcare for refugees. The Society holds an annual medical conference (North American Refugee Health Conference); conducts webinars and training courses; publishes research and policy statements; and connects over 4,000 medical providers through a listserv. They also assist previously resettled refugees with training in healthcare through a scholarship fund. As Afghans and Ukrainians resettle around the world, they will benefit from the Society’s compassionate work. A copy of Navigating the Pandemic: Stories of Hope and Resilience was given to the most senior Kiwanis member at the meeting, Joe Rhineschmidt of Spencerport. A copy of the book has also been donated to the Ogden Farmers’ Library. It can be purchased locally at The Unique Shop in Spencerport and Lift Bridge Book Shop in Brockport. Brockport’s Got Talent

Delfs makes Brockport Fine Arts Series debut with RPO

The Potter’s House Christian Fellowship is sponsoring a Brockport’s Got Talent Show on Saturday, April 9, at 6:30 p.m. This small-scale spin-off on the popular TV show, America’s Got Talent, will be held at Java Junction on Brockport’s Main Street. There is no cost to attend and no fee to perform. All are welcome to join, from Brockport and beyond. Participants will have the chance to exhibit their talent and be entered in a contest in which the three final winners will receive cash prizes. Registration is required by April 2; call 943-1719 or email brockportphchurch@gmail.com. Provided information.

It has been more than two years since the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra appeared as part of the Fine Arts Series at SUNY Brockport. There were no COVID-19 protocols to adhere to back then, and the orchestra had a different music director. SUNY Brockport will welcome new music director Andreas Delfs when he conducts the orchestra on Friday, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will take place at the Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Tickets are $17/general, $12/senior citizens, Brockport alumni, faculty and staff, and $9/students, and are available online at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 395-2787, or in person. SUNY Brockport’s COVID-19 prevention guidelines can be found on the ticketing website, the Fine Arts Series Facebook page, and at brockport.edu/coronavirus/spring_2022. Compliance with campus protocols is required in order to attend any performances or events. The program for the concert stretches over centuries: one of the younger Bachs and Mozart, all the way up to Shostakovich, whose “Cello Concerto No. 1,” which premiered in 1959, will feature RPO cellist Ahrim Kim as soloist. Johann Christian Bach’s “Symphony in G minor, Op. 6” will open the concert, and Mozart’s “Symphony No. 40” will close out the evening.

Having appeared with the RPO as guest conductor on numerous occasions, Delfs is no stranger to Rochester audiences or the orchestra itself. RPO Concertmaster Juliana Athayde commented, “…we are excited to have the maestro’s artistic leadership as the guiding light for our great orchestra. Our community will benefit greatly from his selfless musicianship, palpable artistry, and tireless advocacy for the arts.” Delfs is well known for delivering electrifying performances and artistic excellence. He is equally passionate about supporting young musicians and building deep community relationships, which is why his appearance in Brockport is very much in line with his philosophies. “We need to create access to great music for everybody in our communities and shape our orchestras to be regarded as welcoming, inclusive and diverse by all,” said Delfs. Clean The Outside As Well As The Inside Most homeowners realize the importance of keeping the inside of the house clean, but the exterior of the house is the first thing a prospective buyer notices. Annual cleaning also prolongs the life of exterior siding or masonry. Washing a house is not the enormous task you might imagine, but careful planning and preparation are essential. There are a number of tools, techniques and cleaning agents that can make the job easier. Wait for a warm, dry day when the wind is not blowing to tackle the job. First, protect the areas around the house with plastic sheeting. Set moveable objects away from the house and cover all vents, electrical outlets and outside light fixtures with duct tape and plastic. A careful inspection of the house should follow. Clean any areas with heavy stains (rust, organic or mildew stains or heavy deposits of grime) on masonry surfaces by hand to keep them from running when washed. Most stains can be removed with soap, water, and a scrub brush. Stubborn stains may require a stronger cleaning agent. Luckily, cleaners for almost every kind of stain are readily available. An ordinary garden hose and an automobile brush are usually sufficient for most jobs, but if the surfaces are heavily soiled, you can rent a pressure washer. Navy Club of Lake Ontario marks 30th anniversary Thirty years ago, after having been retired from the US Navy for eight years, Ed Reese missed the sea stories of his fellow sea service veterans and wanted to gather together some western New York Navy, Marine, and Coast Guard veterans. He started an organization, naming it Navy Club of Lake Ontario, Ship 1812. The name was in honor of the battles on the Great Lakes during the War of 1812. March 14, 2022 marked the 30th anniversary of the commissioning of the organization. Reese says that thanks to Shipmate Bob Currier, Old salt Ron Ayrault (plank owner), Admiral John Comins, and so many others, the club is still going strong. Stop by 21 Clinton Street, Brockport, to check out the sea service museum or have a drink at the bar. Shown here are members of the Navy Club of Lake Ontario, Ship 1812 at their Commissioning on March 14, 1992 (l-r) Sonny Pratt, store keeper; Dan LaBarge, masterat-arms; Ron Tolzin, national commandant; Ed Reese, commander; Tom Kuczmynda, executive officer. This photo originally appeared in the Suburban News and HamlinClarkson Herald in April 1992.

“We had our LG mini split fail, and Aire Serv did an amazing job fixing it. The technicians were professional, kind and very knowledgeable. The office staff was very helpful. There were some problems with the warranty, but everyone worked to get it covered, and they made it happen. Great company, and I highly recommend them” - Paul A. “I purchased this house about 5 years ago, and found Aire Serv had put in the heater. I have used them to maintain the heater as well as the AC. My heater stopped working and they were here the same day. After they got the parts they were able to quickly fix the heater first thing the next day. The service guy, Rick went above and beyond. I have always had great service with this company” - Linda V.
