Sweden Planning Board grants Bentley subdivision and site plan On May 24, the Town of Sweden Planning Board granted subdivision and site plan approval for the Bentley Brothers’ three properties west of their retail store on the south side of Brockport Spencerport Road at the Sweden Walker intersection. A month earlier, the Sweden Town Board had granted rezoning applications for the three small Bentley lots from residential to commercial.

The Planning Board application merged the two easterly lots to allow for the installation of a new driveway and re-configuration of the outdoor display area. The display area will be paved, per the Sweden Town Code. The western most lot will be left vacant to serve as a buffer between the business and residences. No additional exterior lighting is planned. Provided information

Local Lion receives international recognition

Brockport Lion Dave Moore (left) received the Past District Governors Leadership Award from District Gov. Mike Donner (right) for his outstanding commitment to the Brockport Lions Club. Provided information and photo.

Jim Schiebel is a member of the Hilton Lions Club and an associate member of the Rochester Downtown Host Lions Club. He has been a Lions Club member for 53 years, serving the community and also developing a free Lions museum in Hamlin. Jim and his wife, Donna, have enjoyed the fellowship of collecting and trading Lions pins and banners and frequently attend events to trade Lions Club paraphernalia. Lions International Trading Pin Club (LITPC) is an international organization that promotes Lions fellowship and supports the international program. At the LITPC annual meeting held this month in Kentucky, Jim was presented with a “Lion of Commitment” plaque for his donation of $3,000 to the Lions Foundation. The award was presented by the Executive Administrator of Lions Clubs International, Past International President Frank Moore. The Lions Foundation works in the areas of disaster relief, diabetes, hunger, and childhood cancer, among other areas. Lion Jim was later presented with a “Lifetime Achievement” plaque by organization President Kent Clovis from Oklahoma. It was only the fourth time this award has been given in the organization’s 48-year international history. Provided information and photo

Blood donors needed to address severe blood supply shortage The American Red Cross is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants, and elective surgeries rise – and deplete the nation’s blood inventory. Donors of all blood types – especially type O and those giving platelets – are urged to make an appointment to give as soon as possible to prevent further impact to patients. Right now, hospitals are responding to an atypically high number of traumas and emergency room visits, as well as overdoses and resulting transplants. In comparison to 2019, the Red Cross has seen demand from trauma centers climb by 10% in 2021− more than five times the growth of other facilities that provide blood transfusions. “When seconds count in emergency trauma situations, it’s the blood already on the shelves that can make the difference in lifesaving care,” said Hanna Malak, Donor Services Executive of Red Cross Western New York Region. “As many people begin to enjoy travel and time with loved ones again this summer, patients are relying on the

generosity of donors to help ensure they have access to the treatment they need. Please consider blood donation as a summer activity that can help save lives.” Schedule an appointment to give blood by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. In addition to trauma needs, there is a great hospital demand for blood as people who deferred care during the height of the pandemic present with more advanced disease progression, requiring increased blood transfusions. Over the last three months, the Red Cross has distributed about 75,000 more blood products than expected to meet these needs. As a result of this shortage, some hospitals are being forced to slow the pace of elective surgeries until the blood supply stabilizes. Blood is perishable and cannot be stockpiled, so it must constantly be replenished by generous blood donors. Donors are urged to make an appointment to give blood

or platelets now. As a thank-you, those who come to give through June 30 will receive a $5 Amazon.com gift card via email, courtesy of Amazon. (Restrictions apply. Additional information and details are available at RedCrossBlood. org/Together.) In most cases, those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine can donate. However, knowing the name of the manufacturer of the vaccine received is important in determining donation eligibility. Upcoming local blood donation opportunities: •June 24, 1 to 5:30 p.m., Hamlin Ambulance, Route 19, 1483 Lake Road •June 25, 1 to 6 p.m., Brockport Firemens Exempt Club, 248 West Avenue •June 30, 1 to 6 p.m., St. Leos Church, 110 Old Hojack Lane, Hilton •June 30, 1 to 6 p.m., American Legion - Spencerport, 691 Trimmer Road. Ogden Democrats announce candidates The Ogden Democratic Committee is marking a year of operation under new leadership with new members. They plan to provide a choice of local candidates with fresh perspectives on important local issues. The committee is endorsing the following candidates in the 2021 November election: Crystal Benjamin-Bafford for Ogden Town

Board; Jaime Erskine-Pettit for Monroe County Legislative District 20; Miriam Rivera for Monroe County Legislative District 4. “All elections matter, and we are honored to represent the growing progressive population in the Town of Ogden.” Election Day is November 4, 2021. Provided information and photos

Jensen reflects on first year in Albany Although my first year working for the state Assembly was unlike any other, I’m proud of the results I was able to deliver for our community. My goal has remained unwavering: to advocate for common-sense policies, represent our Monroe County values and protect our personal freedoms. To serve as a community-focused representative, it is important to be willing and able to work collaboratively and be willing to stand up and push back against policies that are bad for the people I serve. Unfortunately, this year, some in Albany prioritized criminals above law-abiding citizens. As our county and state continue to see crime skyrocket, I was proud to support measures that sought to protect you and your loved ones, support public safety and make our neighborhoods safer. Additionally, this years’ state budget grew the government at an unsustainable rate, increasing spending to record levels, making living in New York more expensive with even new taxes and fees on working families. While I fought against government irresponsibility and overreach, I was pleased to work across the aisle when sensible to deliver real results. As the Ranking Member of the Assembly Libraries Committee, I worked to secure more resources for libraries in our community, and across our state. More than ever, our libraries serve as community centers of education and innovation, and it’s imperative we equip them with the necessary resources to ensure all have access to the tools they need.

Additionally, we were able to ensure our schools received the critical funding they need to thrive, increasing the state investment in our local school districts. Our students, teachers and staff faced all the obstacles thrown at them during COVID19, with ever-changing and confusing regulations from the state and adapting to the unknown of virtual learning. The increased funding provided will ensure that our schools have all the tools necessary to prepare our next generation with the knowledge and experience they need to thrive. However, most of all, despite inconsistent messages coming from the state, I was proud to have my office doors open and continue to provide constituent services to those I represent in the towns of Greece, Ogden and Parma. Hundreds of members of our community have reached out to me directly over the past six months, and I have been proud to assist in whatever way I can. The most important role I have as our Assemblyman is to give a voice to the voiceless and fight for the issues and values that are truly important to those who call our community home. Rec Fest looking to expand 2021 event The Rochester Recreation Festival (Rec Fest), a Spencerport-based festival, is in its third year in 2021. The festival is shaping up to be bigger this year, thanks to the support of the Rochester community. The MVP Health Care Sports Arena is expanding by adding a disc golf course, a nerf battlefield, a rock-climbing wall, and updated mini golf holes. Some of the fan favorites like cornhole and ladder ball will return as well as the exhibitors, food trucks, activity tent, and the main stage. The festival is on the hunt for more community organizations to be involved this year. The festival hopes to welcome some new organizations from the recreation, health, and wellness community to be exhibitors this year. They are also searching for more food trucks, bands, and entertainers. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. Rec Fest Director Simon Devenish says, “The first two festivals happened during challenging times with the Spencerport lift bridge being closed in 2019 and 2020 as well as COVID restrictions last year. Things are looking more promising in 2021, so we look forward to welcoming a bigger crowd this year.”

This year’s festival will be held on the Spencerport Firemen’s Field on Saturday, August 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Profits from the festival are donated to local recreation-based programs and organizations. For information about the festival, visit www.rocrecfest.com or call Simon at 851-1629. For updates, follow the festival on social media. Provided information and photo

Holley Police report Knights of Columbus sponsor free throw competition St. John the XXIII Council of the Knights of Columbus held its annual basketball free throw championship on May 15 at St. John the Evangelist School gym. The competition is for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14. Contestants throw 25 shots from the free throw line to see how many baskets they can make. Although the field this year was greatly abbreviated due to COVID concerns, those who did participate had a great time. Every contestant received a $5 McDonald’s gift certificate, regardless of how they finished. Medals and certificates were awarded on June 10 at St John’s. Shown here are (l-r), Grand Knight Jeff Lambert; John Moore with his son Mason, winner of the 12-year-old boys class; Katie Courtney with daughters Claire and Bridget, who was the 10-year-old girls winner; Josh Pokracki with his son Aston and daughter Taylor, the 9-year-old girls winner; Ben Barrow, tournament director. Missing from the picture are Leigha Pokracki, 11-year-old girls winner; J’Mari Dyson, 12-year-old boys runner up; and Adriella Collichio, 9-year-old girls runner up. “A good time was had by all and we were glad to be able to sponsor an activity for our youth that had them out and active,” said director Ben Barrow. “As we recover from this pandemic, our hope is to be able to fill a much greater field next year for our youth.” Provided information and photo

A Holley Police officer responded to the Holley Falls area just after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15, for the report of a suspicious male walking around with a knife antagonizing people. According to a press release from Holley Police Chief Robert Barton, the officer approached a male sitting on a park bench who did not respond to any of the officer’s questions. The officer then spoke with other individuals in the park to investigate the incident. When the officer returned to the man sitting on the bench, a physical altercation ensued as the man lunged at the officer. During the altercation, the man attempted to stab the officer with a knife. With the assistance of nearby citizens, the officer was able to disarm the man and then the officer utilized his taser to cause the man to disengage. The man, whose name is being withheld until he is arraigned, was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Orleans County Jail. Provided information

Comments Mobile DMV Offices As we passed the one-year mark of the first case of COVID-19 in Monroe County back in March, the adjustments and changes we have seen in our daily lives continue to be apparent. So many of these changes have been made in the name of public health and the decisions leading to closures, at-home policies, and capacity restrictions have certainly not been easy. Recognizing the integral role the County Clerk’s Office has in the lives of all Monroe County residents, I am grateful for the hardworking Clerk’s Office employees and the services provided by the County Clerk’s office through these difficult times. Unfortunately, I am disheartened to know that the Mobile DMV program has no clear plan to restart. I have been contacted by several residents in our community who are disappointed that Mobile DMV services have not yet returned. As you know, the Mobile DMV program adds greater accessibility for disabled and elderly residents who may be reluctant to travel farther from their homes. This is especially important for residents in our area. Based on the safety procedures being taken at the Downtown Office of the Monroe County Clerk, as well as all permanent DMV locations, I am confident that reopening Mobile DMVs could be done safely and with all Centers for Disease Control guidelines taken into account. Beyond the important aspect of accessibility, Mobile DMVs bring in an impactful amount of revenue to the County Clerk’s Office each year. Monroe County receives 12.7 percent of the revenue generated from nearly all DMV transactions, the County receives very little of the DMV revenues generated online or none if a resident travels to a surrounding county to complete their DMV transaction. The Mobile DMV is crucial to retaining the level of revenue that our county accounts for each year. Due to the incredible importance of the services provided by the County Clerk’s Office, I have urged our County Clerk via letter, press conference, and a face to face meeting over the last three months asking the County Clerk to reopen our Mobile DMV sites. Many Westside residents have waited weeks and even months because of lack of appointment availability, to then have to travel to the other side of the county to complete a simple transaction because this is where the first appointment was available to them. It is imperative for our rural communities to have access to these vital services. We need the County Clerk’s Office to seek out meaningful solutions to reopen the Mobile DMVs. I will continue to advocate for the reopening of our Mobile DMVs and if you would like to as well, send your letters to Jamie Romeo, Monroe County Clerk, 39 West Main Street, Room 101, Rochester, NY 14614. Jackie Smith Monroe County Legislator District 2

Seneca Waterways Council, Boy Scouts of America hosted its 70th annual Eagle Scout Celebration on June 8 at Frontier Field.

First co-ed class of Eagle Scouts honored Seneca Waterways Council, Boy Scouts of America hosted its 70th annual Eagle Scout Celebration on June 8 at Frontier Field. The event honored the achievements of the 166 Eagle Scouts in the Class of 2020. This year’s class had the added distinction of being the council’s first co-ed class of Eagle Scouts. In 2019, the Boy Scouts of America welcomed girls into their Scouts BSA program (for youth ages 11 to 18) making it possible for girls to achieve Eagle like their male counterparts. The Eagle Scout rank is the highest rank in Scouting that only about five percent of Scouts nationwide ever achieve. To earn the Eagle Scout rank, Scouts must complete 21 merit badges, hold positions of leadership in their troop, and complete a service project that gives back to the community. Area scouts recognized at the event included: •Jacob Anthony, Troop 133, Churchville •Jonathan Austin, Troop 133, Churchville •Ryan Dick, Troop 133, Churchville

•Elijah Farwell, Troop 122, Chili •Chris Kurdziel, Troop 133, Chili •Ethan Molyneux, Troop 111, Brockport Proclamations from Senator Jeremy Cooney on behalf of the NYS Senate, and from Monroe County Executive Adam Bello were presented along with congratulatory video messages for the Eagle Scout Class of 2020 from both Senator Cooney and County Executive Bello. The event is also an opportunity for the local scouting organization to honor and recognize the lifetime achievements of an adult Eagle Scout by presenting the Outstanding Eagle Scout Award. This year’s honoree is Dr. Kevin J. Casey of Rochester General Hospital. The National Association of Eagle Scouts’ Outstanding Eagle Scout Award is a prestigious recognition granted by a local council to Eagle Scouts who have demonstrated outstanding achievement at the local, state, or regional level.
