Mike McBride (third from left) and members of the McBride family honored their ancestor John Joseph (Exile) McBride during a public ceremony on October 9 to dedicate a new memorial stone for the human rights crusader at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Brockport where records indicate he was buried in 1911. Exile arrived in Brockport as a teenager after fleeing Ireland. He dedicated his life fighting for the cause of Irish independece and freedom for all. While he was well-known in life, having been the subject of over 1,400 newspaper articles between 1870 and 1911, he was largely forgotten in death. Since discovering his great uncle while researching his ancestry, Mike McBride has made it his mission to learn about Exile’s life and share his story. Photo by Joanne Michielsen.

Routine inspections along the Erie Canal to begin the week of October 18 The New York State Canal Corporation will be making routine inspections of water management gates along the Erie Canal in Monroe County beginning the week of October 18 in Brockport and moving east. These inspections, which occur every ten years and are completed by a Canal Corporation contractor, are necessary to ensure the water management gates and their surrounding embankments are functioning as designed. If defects are discovered during the inspections, repairs will be appropriately scheduled. The contractor has completed surveying and will begin assessing material obtained through soil borings at the following locations: •Brockport Waste Weir Dam (Brockport) •Spencerport Waste Weir Dam (Spencerport) •Cartersville Spillway (Town of Brighton) •Bushnell’s Basin (Pittsford) •Fairport Spillway (Perinton/Fairport)

This routine work is not associated with the Canal Corporation’s Earthen Embankment Integrity Program; however, it may require minimal amounts of vegetation to be removed to aid in the inspection process. While the work is performed, residents may notice crew members, wearing hard hats and high-visibility vests, as well as their drilling equipment called “rigs” in the vicinity of the locations noted above. The crew will use drills to take samples of soil and rock as part of this routine ten-year asset inspection program. Throughout these inspections, the Canal Corporation expects minimal, if any, disruption to users of the nearby Erie Canalway Trail. It is anticipated that this inspection process will be completed by November 19, 2021. Provided information

Red Cross experiencing emergency blood shortage The American Red Cross continues to experience an emergency blood and platelet shortage that has caused the blood supply to drop to the lowest post-summer level in at least six years. With less than a day’s supply of certain blood types in recent weeks, the Red Cross asks donors of all blood types – especially type O − to make an appointment to give blood or platelets as soon as possible. Donations will help ensure patients can receive the lifesaving transfusions they rely on. Appointments can be made by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). All those who come to donate through the end of October will receive a link by email to claim a free Zaxby’s® Signature Sandwich reward or a $5 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice, plus a bonus $5 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice. Terms and conditions apply. Additional information and details are available at RedCrossBlood. org/Zaxbys. Each Red Cross blood drive and donation center follows the highest standards of safety and infection control. Additional precautions – including face masks for donors and staff, regardless of vaccination status – have been implemented to help protect the health of all those in attendance. The Sweden Town Board has adopted its 2022 preliminary budget and will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, October 26, at 6:15 p.m. to hear all public comments. The $5.8 million spending plan keeps the tax levy at under 2020 and 2019 levels (excluding the new Lake/Redman water district). The proposed tax rates are $2.44 per thousand in the Village of Brockport, and $4.04 per thousand in the Town outside the Village. Transportation is the largest single portion of the budget at $1,719,500, followed by general government expenses of $1,524,829. Employee benefits at $888,040 and Culture and Recreation (library, community center, and park) at $826,725 are the next largest shares of the budget. Public safety, health, home, and community (cemeteries and spring and fall pick-ups), debt service, and special districts comprise the remaining $845,332. Equipment purchases for the highway department, cemetery, and park that were removed from the 2021 budget as a response to the pandemic have been returned to the 2022 budget. However, the budget remains below the 2% tax cap largely due to the budget reductions that remain in place. “This budget allows us to continue infrastructure improvements and keep all programs in place,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “It also keeps the tax levy lower than previous budgets, which is a real benefit to our taxpayers.” Provided information

Brockport CSD’s Walk To School Day 2021

Sunday, October 24, 2021, 4:00PM First Presbyterian Church of Brockport 35 State Street, Brockport, NY 14420 Free Admission and Parking - Donations Gratefully Accepted Masks Required for Attendees

Featuring Dr. Sidney Rosenzweig, Film Professor & Author Emmanuel Sikora, Composer-in-Residence This project is made possible with support from the Village of Brockport and funds from the Statewide Community Regrants Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.

It was a morning to enjoy! With a comfortable temperature and partly cloudy skies, the 16th annual Brockport Walk To School Day was a wonderful success. Nearly 500 elementary and middle school students walked to school on October 6, International Walk To School Day. Barclay School won the trophy for the highest percentage of walkers among elementary schools with an impressive 35 percent of its student body walking to school. Among the Oliver Middle School classes, the sixth grade claimed the most walkers with 15 percent of the class walking to school. The Barclay School and sixth grade students will be awarded a trophy and plaque, respectively, at school assemblies. The Walk To School event was changed a bit this year to avoid children and adults congregating in large groups, but our dedicated greeters were at street corners and our enthusiastic counters were at school entrances. We even had two retired BCS teachers from Caledonia and Warsaw come to help. Now that is dedication to this great event! And the apples from Kalir Farm were delicious and appreciated by our young walkers. Let’s look forward to Walk To School Day next year! And don’t forget, the idea of the day is to promote walking as a healthy activity... so keep walking! Jim Goetz, MD Brockport Walk To School Committee

by Kristina Gabalski Beware of invasive Asian jumping worms by Kristina Gabalski Invasive Asian jumping worms are being found increasingly here in New York State, and home gardeners should be on the lookout to help minimize the spread and take initiative. The NYS Department of Environmental Conservation says the jumping worms, sometimes called crazy worms, are native to Asia. They can be found primarily in the top layers of soil, where they do damage by consuming the upper organic layer of soil, leaching nutrients, and turning topsoil into a texture similar to coffee grounds. This makes it difficult for trees, garden plants, and lawns to grow as the soil nutrients they need are not available. To tell the difference between Asian jumping worms and European earthworms that normally are a welcome sight in your garden, look closely at the worm’s clitellum or collar. Jumping worms have a distinctive milky-white collar close to the head and flush with their bodies. According to the New York Invasive Species Research Institute’s Jumping Worm Outreach, Research & Management Working Group, Asian jumping worms are spread by humans unknowingly via egg cases in soil, mulch, potted plants, landscaping equipment, and even on shoe and tire treads. Jumping worms have an annual life cycle. In the spring, they hatch from tiny, poppy-seed-sized cocoons and mature in 70 to 90 days. In late fall, adults die, leaving new cocoons to overwinter for the next generation. It is most easy to recognize the adults at this time of year. In addition to their smooth milky-white collar, jumping worms live up to their name by thrashing wildly when disturbed - they can jump and flip over and even cast off the end of their tail. Their castings (droppings) look like coarse coffee grounds, which create a loose layer between leaf litter and mineral soil beneath. To help minimize the spread, do not buy or use jumping worms for bait, vermicomposting, or gardening. It is possible that purchased earthworms may be mislabeled, so it is important to recognize jumping worms by their appearance and behavior. Carefully check new mulch, compost, and soil for jumping worms and cocoons. Purchase mulch, compost, and soil that has been heated to appropriate

Check the soil and roots of potted plants or trees for jumping worms or castings before planting in your yard. If you find jumping worms in materials you have purchased, dispose of contaminated soil and castings in the trash. You can kill the worms by freezing or by leaving them in a bag in the sun - then discard them. Worms may also be killed using vinegar or rubbing alcohol. If you have jumping worms on your property, minimize sharing and moving plants. If you do move or share plants, wash the roots and share them bare-root or repotted in sterile potting soil. Girl Scouts embrace e-commerce in entrepreneurship Girl Scouts of Western New York’s popular Fall Product Program is underway, featuring a wide selection of candy, nuts, and magazines, plus opportunities to give back to local military personnel and veterans. Girl Scouts will put their entrepreneurial, e-commerce, and cyber-safety skills to work as they use an online digital platform to engage friends, family, and the general public to place orders. The community can support a local Girl Scout by ordering sweet and savory items such as Peanut Butter Bears, Dulce de Leche Owls, English Butter Toffee, Dark Chocolate Mint Penguins, Dark Chocolate Caramel Caps with Sea Salt, Chocolate Covered Raisins, fat-free Fruit Slices, Dill Pickle Flavored Peanuts, Whole Cashews with Sea Salt, and Peanut Butter Trail Mix. New this year - Caramel Apples and Sweet & Salty Mix. Prices range from $6 to $40. The Fall Product Program runs through October 30, 2021. Through the Fall Product Program’s Operation Gratitude, customers can also choose to purchase items to benefit local military personnel and veterans. Customers can either select the option through the online platform or on a girl’s order card. Operation Gratitude’s mission is to forge strong bonds between Americans and their military and first responder heroes.

The Fall Product Program allows girls to gain practical money smarts and the knowledge of how to navigate selling products in a digital environment, which are skills that will last a lifetime. Girls are also taught the importance of cyber-safety as they use a digital database to track their orders and send out electronic emails to their customers. This program teaches girls five skills: goal-setting, decisionmaking, money management, people skills, and business ethics. Girls also learn the benefits of working together as a team, as well as earning money to support their activities throughout the year. Girl Scout membership is open to all girls in grades K-12 with flexible program opportunities to choose from. The Fall Product program and the spring Cookie program help girls to raise funds for their participation, and financial aid is also available to any new families interested in joining. Volunteers are also needed, and members of the community interested in volunteering can also join. For information on how to support a local girl through the Fall Product Program or for information on joining Girl Scouts, visit gswny.org, call 1-888-837-6410, or email customercare@gswny.org. Correction in opinion letter In my opinion letter entitled “Candidate responds to questions” in the October 10 edition of this publication, I had a very small and hopefully obvious error which I want to correct. It can be found in the sentence that read, “My point for years has been that local issues in town have no party significance….divisive statements are meaningless regardless of which party you are affiliated with or where you stand on state and local issues.” The word “local” should have been “national.” From the content of the entire letter, I’m pretty sure most readers would have recognized this as an error, but I wanted to make the correction publicly. Beware of text message phishing scams The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and Department of Health are warning New Yorkers of two new text message phishing schemes. Phishing texts are fraudulent messages designed to obtain data or sensitive personal information to be used to commit identity theft or trick the recipient into installing malicious software onto a computer or mobile device. The DMV says that the illegitimate text messages ask recipients to verify their driver’s license information and to validate their COVID-19 status. Examples of the text messages can be found at https://dmv.ny.gov/more-info/ phishing-examples. Scammers are also exploiting vaccine requirement policies to try to steal people’s personal and private information. The illegitimate text message attempts to impersonate the NYS Department of Health and tells the recipient they are required to enter their information to validate their vaccination status. Anyone receiving such text messages should delete them right away. To help protect against phishing or smishing (SMS phishing) scams, the NYS Office of Information Technology

Services (ITS) recommends the following precautions: •DO exercise caution with all communications you receive, including those that appear to be from a trusted entity. Inspect the sender’s information to confirm the message was generated from a legitimate source. •DO keep an eye out for telltale signs of phishing - poor spelling or grammar, the use of threats, the URL does not match that of the legitimate site. If the message does not feel right, chances are it is not. •DON’T click on links embedded in an unsolicited message from an unverified source. •DON’T send your personal information via text. Legitimate businesses will not ask users to send sensitive personal information through text messages. •DON’T post sensitive information online. The less information you post, the less data you make available to a cybercriminal for use in developing a potential attack or scam. For additional information on phishing scams, as well as steps to mitigate a phishing attempt, visit the NYS Office of Information Technology Services Phishing Awareness resources page at https://its.ny.gov/resources. Song and Tanaka bring a world premiere to Brockport Pianist E-Na Song and violinist Koki Tanaka will play works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky at a recital at SUNY Brockport on Wednesday, October 27, at 7:30 p.m. The highlight, however, will be the world premiere of “Eight Aspects,” by Tyler Kline. The concert will take place at the Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. According to Kline, “‘Eight Aspects’ is about the moon in a symbolic sense (although the eight ‘aspects’ of this work could be interpreted as the eight moon phases). In this case, the moon represents illusions, the subconscious, and something divine yet ambiguous. This imagery is a common thread through the piece, though it is filtered in different ways within each movement. Different moods and characters appear, ranging from fantasy-like escapism to frozen-in-time ritual music; overflowing washes of sound to sharp and pointed textures, and circular gestures that evoke the completeness of a world itself.” The commission process was almost collaborative, according to Song. “Koki and I had a couple of Zoom meetings with Tyler to discuss what we wanted from the music. I mentioned I was into anything related to nature, and Tyler suggested the theme of the moon. We loved the idea! After we agreed upon the subject… Tyler asked us what kinds of musical ideas we would like to have in the piece. Koki and I wanted something familiar, not too foreign, but at the same time somewhat experimental, so Tyler… added not just violin harmonics

E-Na Song, piano, and Koki Tanaka, violin, will perform works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky along with a world premiere by Tyler Kline in a recital at SUNY Brockport on Wednesday, October 27, at 7:30 p.m.

but also piano harmonics, which I believe must be fun and new to many audiences.” Korean-born pianist Dr. E-Na Song is a concert pianist, collaborative pianist, and piano teacher. As a concert pianist, she enjoys communicating with audiences with her passionate playing. Her creative interpretation and thoughtful programs attract audiences of all ages and backgrounds. She has appeared in venues such as Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre, Han Gang Grand Hall at Gang Dong Arts Center, and in Europe, including Poland and Spain. She currently teaches at Roberts Community Music School and the Hochstein School as a Piano Instructor and has joined Roberts Wesleyan College as an adjunct faculty member this semester. Song enjoys her time in Florida every summer, working as the assistant director in the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival. Determined to engage and inspire audiences, Koki Tanaka made his debut at age 18 at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, performing the Jules Conus’ technically demanding “Violin Concerto in E minor” with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra. In 2016, he was awarded the first prize in the American Protégé Piano and String Competition and made a solo debut at Weill Recital Hall in New York City. Born in Japan, Tanaka started playing the violin at age six. Once he emigrated to the United States, he studied with Mikhail Kopelman, Renée Jolles, Lynn Blakeslee, Ronald Patterson, Hsuan (Tony) Lee. While studying at the Eastman School of Music, he has been giving solo recitals annually under their aegis, as well as appearing at the George Eastman Museum’s Annual Concert Series. While working toward his undergraduate degree at the University of Washington, Tanaka enjoyed his first experiences performing chamber music. Motivated by the fact, he formed The Quantum String Quartet with his colleagues, and the group was awarded the first prize in the University of Washington Strings and Piano Chamber Ensemble Competition. Tanaka’s other passion is teaching, which he has done in any number of situations, from elementary school to middle school music class, as well as private lessons. Currently, he is teaching at both Nazareth College and Roberts Wesleyan Community Music School. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music, from which he also received his master’s degree. Tickets are $17/general, $12/senior citizens, Brockport alumni, faculty and staff, and $9/students, and are available online at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 3952787, or in person. SUNY Brockport’s up-to-date COVID-19 prevention guidelines can be found on the ticketing website, the Fine Arts Series Facebook page, and at brockport.edu/ coronavirus. Compliance with campus protocols is required in order to attend performances or events. Provided information and photos
