Hilton High School Sources of Strength peer leaders model their new t-shirts courtesy of the Class of 1970.

Hilton Class of 1970 makes donation to enhance learning and special events The Hilton High School Class of 1970 has made a donation of $20,000 to the Hilton School District to celebrate their 50th reunion. “The gift is a thank you for the great start HCS gave us preparing our class for college and career,” said Nancy Leport, 1970 Hilton graduate. “The money is to be used to fund non-budget items to enhance classroom learning and special events.”

Teachers and administrators simply fill out an application that is submitted to the Class of 1970 Committee for approval through the Office of Instruction. In October, High School Principal Dr. Jeff Green and Kate Gilmore-Tep, English teacher and Sources of Strength advisor, submitted a grant application to purchase t-shirts for Sources of Strength peer leaders. “The kids loved it and so we are very appreciative as t-shirts are one of those things

that aren’t required/necessary, but positively impact the school community,” said Green. In its third year, Sources of Strength is a nationally recognized, research-based program that empowers students to find strengths within themselves and adult connections within the school and community that serve to protect them during difficult times. Rather than focusing on risk factors, warning signs, and stories of trauma, Sources of Strength takes an upstream approach

to prevention by focusing on strengths, resiliency, and connectedness. Students from various peer groups are nominated by their teachers and participate in training. The group meets monthly to develop strategic messaging campaigns with the goal of having an impact on school environment, peer group norms, and individual factors that are protective against bullying, substance abuse, mental illness, and violence. Sweden Town Board at the January 25 Town Board meeting. Mrs. Goetz worked tirelessly to create the Sweden Farmers Museum by helping to restore the building; collect, inventory, and label artifacts; and host tours and special events. She volunteered for years at the annual Harvest Festival and helped plan the Town of Sweden’s bicentennial celebration events in 2014. She has written many informative articles featured in the Town newsletter, the Snapshots, and helped many people research local history. Mrs. Goetz continues to serve on the Town’s Landmark Advisory Board as she has since 2010. She belongs to several other local historical groups. “Kathy’s efforts to preserve and share the Town of Sweden’s history has made her an important part of that history,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “We look forward to honoring her service.” The January 25 Town Board meeting begins at 6 p.m. and is open to the public. CCE-Monroe receives funding for workshops Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County (CCEMonroe) has received funding through the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute to offer a series of workshops promoting the advantages of using battery-powered landscape tools in place of traditional gas-powered equipment. The goal of the project is to have a positive impact on the purchasing decisions made by property managers, landscape companies, and the general public in regard to landscape equipment. Through educational workshops and literature distribution CCE-Monroe will share information and personal testimonies to encourage purchasers to replace old landscape tools with battery-powered ones. The long-range impact from the success of these efforts will be cleaner air and less noise for the people using the equipment and the people who live or work in areas where landscape maintenance is being done. Gas-powered tools emit carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, polluting the air and endangering the individuals who operate the equipment. In addition, the noise pollution from gas-powered tools exceeds the limits issued by OSHA by a substantial increase. CCE-Monroe will provide six workshops between April and November 2022 to share information with individuals who make purchasing decisions for their landscape/property maintenance business. They will also create flyers with similar information that can be distributed to the general public through City of Rochester Recreation Centers, Monroe County Parks, and local garden centers. CCE-Monroe will create a video highlighting Cornell University Grounds Department, which has been transitioning to battery-powered equipment over the past several years. The video will be featured at the six workshops, along with other research that supports the environmental-friendly nature of battery-powered tools and their ability to perform as well as gas-powered equipment. Local suppliers of battery-powered tools will be invited to each workshop to share with attendees the tool lines that they sell and any sales-incentives they might have to offer. For information on the upcoming workshops, contact Marci Muller at 753-2557 or mem545@cornell.edu. Provided information

Online platform connects older adults with the therapeutic power of pets In a continuing effort to combat social isolation, the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) and Association on Aging in New York (AgingNY) have partnered with Pets Together, a national non-profit organization, to connect older New Yorkers with the therapeutic power of pets using the Pets Together video chat service, which offers social interactions aimed at reducing loneliness and stress. Older New Yorkers can learn more about this free program and reserve a virtual visit directly at https://petstogether.org. A Pets Together video visit is approximately 30 minutes in length. Older adults who participate get to meet with volunteer pet-owners to see and learn about their pets. More importantly, the conversation offers an opportunity for engagement aimed at combatting social isolation. Featured pets include everything from dogs to bearded dragons, cats to ponies, goats and birds. In 2017, the U.S. Surgeon General declared social isolation to be a “global epidemic” – one that has only worsened in the COVID-19 health emergency. According to the AARP Public Policy Institute, social isolation drives $6.7 billion in additional associated Medicare spending per year. The health consequences of loneliness and isolation are equivalent to smoking almost a pack of cigarettes daily. Studies have also shown that interacting with animals is an effective antidote: lowering blood pressure and reducing loneliness, stress, or anxiety. The Pets Together partnership is the newest in a series of creative efforts undertaken by NYSOFA to combat social isolation, helping to supplement formally structured social programs offered by Area Agencies on Aging and their partners. It is also NYSOFA’s second initiative leveraging the healing power of pets. NYSOFA’s animatronic pet project is providing older New Yorkers with 3,500 “lifelike” robotic pets that provide comfort and companionship. The

program has a proven track record of reducing self-reported loneliness by 70 percent. NYSOFA has also forged recent collaborations with GetSetUp, an online learning community that is connecting 54,000 older New Yorkers to interactive classes which help promote physical, mental, and social health. NYSOFA, AgingNY and Pets Together also urge pet owners to consider becoming a volunteer through the Pets Together network – an opportunity to connect with older adults, talk about your pet, and, most importantly, engage in meaningful conversation that helps build vital social connections. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, complete the application at https://petstogether.org. Pets Together Executive Director Jennifer Bashford said, “We’re very excited to partner with New York to help reduce social isolation among older adults. Our program has proven to be a great way for volunteers, older individuals, and residents in facilities to connect and interact, plus it’s just a lot of fun. Our volunteers use conversations about their pets to make a connection with the audience. Every visit is different, and you never know which animal is going to be on the call, or how they’ll behave. Our volunteers have also formed a close community, as many are retired individuals themselves. Pets really do have the ability to bring us together.” Association on Aging in New York Executive Director Becky Preve said, “New York’s Area Agencies on Aging provide vital socialization programs that help older adults stay connected. We are thrilled to supplement those offerings by working with creative partners, like Pets Together, to reach older adults in diverse ways, combining the power of technology with the calming presence of animals. I encourage older adults across New York State to experience first-hand the positive benefits of a Pets Together virtual visit and log-on today.” Provided information

Help available for problem gambling

Jenna Hotaling, Team Leader Finger Lakes Problem Gambling Resource Center

ROAD tRIpS wItH BODINE

Comments Many New Yorkers were excited to hear that they could now place a sports wager on their mobile device. But for a number of others, the availability of Mobile Sports Betting could lead to a gambling problem. When gambling opportunities expand, the increased availability leads to increased problems. Having access 24 hours a day with endless wagering possibilities makes an already-troubling issue worse. The combination of sports wagering and technology attracts a new, younger demographic of bettors and leaves young people more susceptible to developing a problem. Mobile Sports Betting has been legal in Pennsylvania and New Jersey since 2017 and 2018, respectively. Pennsylvania has seen a 285% increase in calls to their helpline. In New Jersey, about 50% of those in treatment for a gambling problem have a problem with sports betting. If NY sees a similar trend, which we expect to, we need additional funding beyond the 0.05% currently provided for problem gambling services and a more comprehensive counter-marketing, prevention, treatment, and recovery plan to ensure anyone negatively impacted by gambling can get the help they need. If you or someone you know is wagering more than they can afford, preoccupied by sports and gambling, neglecting responsibilities, or feeling stressed and anxious, the Finger Lakes Problem Gambling Resource Center is here to help. Call 585-351-2262 or visit NYProblemGamblingHELP.org for local, confidential support. You don’t have to struggle alone.

UPDATE: All Bodine tour group members must be fully vaccinated 2 weeks prior to departure. This keeps all of our guests safe and is a requirement for several venues we travel to. An Excelsior Pass is the best method to prove you are in compliance.

Genesee Transportation Council seeks public comment The Genesee Transportation Council (GTC) is accepting public input on a draft of its next operating plan and annual budget known as Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP) through February 8. A list of proposed transportation planning projects recommended for funding accompanies the document. The UPWP lists the federally funded transportation planning activities that GTC, its member agencies, and other municipalities in the nine-county Genesee-Finger Lakes Region will advance during the next fiscal year. Transportation planning activities include specific projects and ongoing tasks that reflect the vision of the Long Range Transportation Plan 2045 (LRTP.) Tasks range from active transportation plans that promote bicycling and walking to a railroad corridor plan that promotes economic development. Garden Talk Series starts February 3 Genesee County Master Gardeners will be holding their monthly Garden Talk starting February 3. This free series is open to all and runs from noon to 12:45 p.m. The February program will only be available via Zoom, but the hope is to be able to have an in-person option for future installments. Registration is required. Visit the events page at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County website, http://genesee.cce.cornell.edu/events. A Zoom link will be sent via email with the registrant’s personal link to the event. The program schedule is: •February 3 – “Monarchs – their flight, their plight and what you can do” with Master Gardener Pam M. Monarch butterflies have had huge population declines over the past 20 years. One reason is habitat loss. Once a common sight, they are perilously close to being added to the Endangered Species List. Learn about their life cycle, what they need to thrive, survive, and how you can help rescue these creatures with your garden. •March 3 – “Plants of Shakespeare” with Master Gardener Connie B. Although Shakespeare most likely was not a gardener, he constantly referenced plants in his plays and sonnets. The program will focus on plants found in

Shakespeare’s literary works, as well as plants popular in Elizabethan gardens and folklore. •April 7 – “Spring into the Garden” with Master Gardener Suzanne B. Once the spring weather hits, everyone wants to rush out into the garden, but sometimes the garden isn’t ready for every chore. She will offer tips on what to do to get your garden ready for spring. •May 5 – “Kitchen Gardens” with Master Gardener Kathie W. Kitchen gardens have been around for as long as humans have lived in communities. And no, they are not gardens in your kitchen. Learn a little history, a little design, what exactly is a kitchen garden, and what can be planted in one. •June 2 – “Playing in the Dirt - Risks and Benefits” with Master Gardener Irene H. Gardening offers many health and life benefits to the gardener, but it also has its risks. Some will be surprising. Master Gardener events will be posted on the CCE Genesee County website and on its Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CCEofGenesee. Garden Talk programs are recorded and posted to the CCE Genesee YouTube page at https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCaXK_W80PkoUBj-HBm8OFMA/videos. Provided information

Eleven students were inducted in the Holley High School National Honor Society in a ceremony on November 18.

Holley inducts 11 into National Honor Society The Holley High School National Honor Society (NHS) Induction Ceremony occurred on November 18, 2021. Eleven students were inducted based on their application to the faculty selection committee and maintenance of a 90 percent or higher academic average. The students must demonstrate the five qualities of NHS membership: character, scholarship, knowledge, leadership, and service. The ceremony began with new inductees called to the front of the Holley Middle School/High School Auditorium, where they were escorted by current NHS members out of the auditorium to change into their black gowns. When they returned, new inductees joined current NHS members on stage for the ceremony. NHS officers lit the ceremonial candles and described each of the qualities of membership. When the inductees’ names were announced, they received their membership certificates from Principal Susan Cory and signed their names in the book that maintains a record of every NHS inductee since 1938. Superintendent Brian Bartalo distributed membership pins to students’ family members. New inductees were then pinned by their family members before taking the NHS oath of membership as a group. The guest speaker at the Induction Ceremony was Crystal Dobri, a Holley alumna and Professor of Nursing at St. John Fisher College. She was a member of NHS when she was a student at Holley. When she pursued her master’s degree at Roberts Wesleyan College, she was also part of the nursing honor society there. Dobri reflected on her time at Holley, saying that Principal Cory was her guidance counselor and NHS Advisor Russ Albright was a first-year teacher when she was a senior. She talked about lifelong learning and all the nametags she’s had over the years as she progressed through being a student and employee in various settings. “You’ve overcome many barriers in your

time as a student,” she said. “You’ve shown your dedication to learning these last few years, and that’s what brought you here tonight. Keep growing and keep learning.” Principal Cory congratulated the inductees and reminded them, “It’s what we do with our attitude and character that makes us successful.” New NHS inductees are: Morgan Blosenhauer, Drew Carlston, Hunter Kaminski, Sarah Kelly, Shannon Kelly, Sara Kingdollar, Casey Onisk, Ava Quincey, Elise Quincey, Lily Sprague, and Lydia Sprague. Current NHS members are: President Harleigh Andrews, Vice President Adriana Botello, Secretary Hope Falls, Treasurer Thomas Dobri, and members Kirsstin Althoff, Cora Bennage, Tatum Gagné, Rachel Kinsey, Hayley Lipke, Grace McKeon, Broek Ostrom, Libbie Pecora, and Deanna Schubmehl. Red Cross warns that national blood crisis may put patients at risk The American Red Cross is facing a national blood crisis – its worst blood shortage in more than a decade. Dangerously low blood supply levels are posing a concerning risk to patient care and forcing doctors to make difficult decisions about who receives blood transfusions and who will need to wait until more products become available. Blood and platelet donations are critically needed to help prevent further delays in vital medical treatments, and donors of all blood types – especially type O − are urged to make an appointment now to give in the weeks ahead. In recent weeks, the Red Cross had less than a one-day supply of critical blood types and has had to limit blood product distributions to hospitals. At times, as much as one-quarter of hospital blood needs are not being met. The Red Cross continues to confront relentless challenges due to COVID-19, including about a 10% overall decline in the number of people donating blood as well as ongoing blood drive cancellations and staffing limitations. Additionally, the pandemic has contributed to a 62% drop in blood drives at schools and colleges. “Winter weather across the country and the recent surge of COVID-19 cases are compounding the already-dire situation fac-

matically be entered for a chance to win a getaway to Super Bowl LVI in Los Angeles. As an extra thank-you from the Red Cross, those who come to donate will also be automatically entered to win a home theater package and a $500 e-gift card. Terms apply; visit RedCrossBlood.org/SuperBowl for more information. In addition to blood donors, the Red Cross also needs the help of volunteers to support blood collections. Blood drive volunteers play ing the blood supply,” said Dr. Baia Lasky, medical director for the Red Cross. “Please, if you are eligible, make an appointment to give blood or platelets in the days and weeks ahead to ensure no patient is forced to wait for critical care.” Over the next month, about 66% of donation appointments remain unfilled in the Western New York Red Cross region. Make an appointment to give blood or platelets by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross and the NFL are partnering this January, during National Blood Donor Month, to urge individuals to give blood or platelets and help tackle the national blood shortage. Those who come to give blood, platelets or plasma in January will auto-

an important role by greeting, registering, answering questions, and providing information to blood donors throughout the donation process. Blood transportation specialists – another volunteer opportunity − provide a critical link between blood donors and blood recipients by delivering blood to hospitals in communities across the country. To volunteer to support Red Cross blood collections, visit redcross.org/volunteertoday. Provided information

Cold weather car trouble Did you know that a car battery loses a third of its power in freezing temperatures? Why? Because as the air outside cools, the oil in the car thickens making it harder to turn the engine over. Extremely cold temperatures will cause many car batteries to fail. Driving your car is the best way to maintain its charge. Motorists should keep this in mind, and they shouldn’t wait until the last minute to make sure their vehicle starts. If possible, park inside a garage where it is warmer. Motorists should be aware of signs that show a car’s battery is nearing the end of its life. According to AAA, here are some things to look out for:

•Vehicle cranks slowly when trying to start •Grinding, clicking, or buzzing when the ignition is turned on •Vehicle has stalled •Headlights dim when idling, but brighten when the driver revs the engine •Battery is more than three years old To avoid being stranded due to a battery problem, have the battery inspected at every oil change to make sure the cable connections are clean and tight, and the hold down hardware is secure. Once a battery reaches three years of age, have it tested annually. The test will identify if the battery has deteriorated to the point where replacement is recommended to prevent an unexpected failure. Provided information

Village of Brockport presents 2022 Winter Serenades Winter Serenades, a companion to the popular outdoor Summer Serenades series at the Village of Brockport’s Welcome Center, will be offered indoors on four Sunday afternoons in February and March. These winter concerts are the perfect antidote to the cabin fever that usually comes with the area’s snow and long, dark days. Four varied music events will be held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Main and State Streets in the center of Brockport, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., with a “Meet the Artists” gathering upstairs afterwards. The series is free, thanks to generous support from community sponsors. The Serenades committee comprised of Terry A. Carbone, Jacquie Davis, Patty Kutz, and Gary Skoog, is excited to showcase four diverse, small groups that will come alive in the intimate setting of St. Luke’s with its excellent acoustics. As a special feature, the musicians will include informative comments about the works they present. These casual afternoon events are designed for all ages; families are encouraged to attend. The line-up of free winter music performances is: •February 6 – JAY Trio comprised of RPO cellist Jennifer Carpenter with Aika Ito, vi-
