Sending Valentines and smiles to veterans at Batavia VA by Pamela A. Moore, Harvey C. Noone Legion Post #954 Family

Over 1,200 Valentines were collected. Photo by Pamela Moore.

Three years ago, Harvey C. Noone Post #954 Legion Family began collecting and delivering Valentines to veterans at the Batavia VA. Because of the pandemic, visitors have not been allowed for almost a year. Given this isolation, the Post Family decided to increase the number of Valentines and corresponding smiles the cards would bring to these heroes. The group partnered with Lynn Brown, Director of Churchville’s Newman Riga Library, who agreed to have the library serve as the main collection point. The Post Fam-

ily also reached out through their website and social media to spread the word about their project. Enthusiasm grew, and soon the box at the library was overflowing with store-bought and handmade Valentines from local children, families, individuals, and organizations. Members of 4-H Clubs of Genesee County joined the effort, and cards even arrived from as far away as Florida. Many included a note of thanks to the veterans. The pictures tell the story of how helping these veterans weather the isolation caused by the pandemic brought fun, enjoyment, and smiles to those who took the time to cheer up others.

Thanks to the community’s support, the previous record was exceeded, and five large shopping bags, filled with 1,236 Valentine’s Day cards, were delivered to the Batavia VA. Cindy Baker, Volunteer Services Specialist, in a note of thanks, included a story about the impact of this project. She reported that as she wheeled the cart from the reception area to her office, one curious veteran asked her what the bags contained. She said she wished the participants could have seen the smile on his face as she told him. And she said there would be many, many more smiles as the Valentines are delivered.

Making Valentines was fun for all ages. Pictured (l-r) are cousins Bridgette Montesano and Auxiliary Member Briana Lynch, Emma Walworth, Evan Denton, and Priscilla Moriarty. Photos by Briana Lynch, Carrie Moriarty. and Danielle Denton.

politically speaking Second Spencerport resident announces run for mayor Anna Sapienza has announced her candidacy for Mayor of the Village of Spencerport, where she has resided with her husband, James, and raised her three children. According to a press release for the announcement, Mrs. Sapienza is considered a respected and passionate educator as well as a natural leader. She recently retired from the Spencerport School District as Coordinator of Special Education. “I am confident that many of the leadership skills and problem-solving abilities that I’ve excelled in will transfer to my new role as a community leader,” Mrs. Sapienza said. “I feel strongly that it is time to give back to the community that I love,” she added.

According to the press release, Mrs. Sapienza’s vision is to offer an active, collaborative, and transparent leadership. “I offer my efforts, energy, and a fresh perspective to strive for the betterment of our village. I see new vibrancy, renovations, and improvements in our future. I look forward to working with business owners, community leaders, and village residents to accomplish these goals,” she said. The village election will be held on March 16. Mrs. Sapienza is running against incumbent Mayor Gary Penders for a four-year term. For further information on Mrs. Sapienza, visit the “Vibrant Village Party” page on Facebook. Provided information

NYS Assembly passes an “Environmental Bill of Rights” On February 8, the New York State Assembly joined their Senate colleagues in passing A.1368/S.528, a bill to add environmental rights to Article 1 of the State Constitution: “Each person shall have a right to clean air and water, and a healthful environment.” The measure has now passed both houses of the Legislature during two consecutive sessions, (the bill previously passed both the Senate and Assembly in 2019) and will be placed on this year’s general election ballot in November. The bill is sponsored by Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee Chair Steve Englebright and Senator Robert Jackson. If approved by voters, New York will be the third state to align environmental rights with political and

civil liberties, such as freedom of speech and worship (the other two states are Pennsylvania and Montana). Senator Robert Jackson said, “By continuing the process to add 15 words to the Constitution of our state, we are helping shape the future of New York: ‘Each person shall have a right to clean air and water, and a healthful environment.’ If the voters approve it in November, this language will finally put in place safeguards that require the government to consider the environment and our relationship to the Earth in decision making. If the government fails in that responsibility, New Yorkers will finally have the right to take legal action for a clean environment because it will be in the State Constitution.” Provided information

Legislation introduced to give initiative and referendum Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,I-Greece) has introduced legislation that would enact a constitutional amendment to provide residents of New York with the power of initiative and referendum (A.4674). Initiative is the power of the electors to propose amendments to both the constitution and statutes, while referendum is the power of the electors to approve or reject statutes or parts of statutes. Proposals that qualify would go directly on the ballot.

“I’m proud to sponsor this bill that allows the residents of New York to vote on bills to become law. Having their input and say in what bills become state law is such a crucial part of our democracy. Their voices and opinions deserve to be heard,” said Jensen. “It’s an honor to be able to sponsor this bill and give our residents a direct say in what bills are implemented in our state.” Provided information

Hawley receives “Friend In Government” award Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) has been awarded the New York Beef Producers Association 2020 Friend in Government award, which he received during their annual meeting held virtually on Zoom. Hawley has been supportive of New York agriculture as a lawmaker and as a citizen for decades, as he is a 42-year member of the New York State Farm Bureau, has served as President of the Genesee County Farm Bureau, and has been a member of the New York State Assembly Committee on Agriculture for 15 years. The award is given to legislators who have been notably vocal advocates for those in the industry of beef production, and Assemblyman Hawley is one of only two legislators to receive this award this year. “As a former farmer myself, it has been my honor to stand up as a voice for everybody who works in agriculture in our state, including beef producers,” said Hawley. “I look forward to continuing to champion the causes of our farmers, and even as we face a challenging year ahead I look forward to working with producers to make the best of it and assure their voices are heard in our Legislature.” Provided information

Participants sought for clinical study on investigational smoking cessation therapy Rochester Clinical Research is enrolling eligible volunteers into ORCA-2 (NCT04576949), a U.S. Phase 3 clinical research study evaluating the safety and efficacy of cytisinicline, an investigational therapy for smoking cessation. Cytisinicline is a plant-based, naturally-occurring compound that is structurally similar to nicotine and is believed to aid in smoking cessation by binding more specifically to a certain nicotinic receptor in the brain. This binding partially stimulates dopamine release, which reduces nicotine cravings and the severity of nicotine withdrawal symptoms. It also directly inhibits nicotine binding, reducing the satisfaction typically associated with smoking. ORCA-2 is being conducted to learn more about the effectiveness and safety of 3.0 mg cytisinicline in combination with behavioral support in people trying to quit cigarette smoking. Rochester Clinical Research is one of 15 U.S. clinical sites participating in ORCA-2. The study is open to adults at least 18 years of age who currently smoke an average of at least ten cigarettes per day, intend to quit smoking, and have failed at least one previous attempt to stop smoking with or without therapeutic support. Participants must be willing to set a quit date within five to seven days of starting treatment and be willing to actively participate in the study’s smoking cessation behavioral support provided throughout the study. All randomized subjects will initiate study treatment the day after randomization, receive 12 weeks of treatment, and will then be followed for

Grace Andreano

Grace Andreano died peacefully, at the home of her oldest daughter Liz (Grace) Morrell and son in law Eugene Morrell, in Manzanita, Oregon, on January 3, 2021. Grace had recently relocated to Oregon, after living most of her life in upstate New York. Grace was born on May 8, 1922, to Guistina and Vincent Daddazio, in Rochester, New York. She met her husband, Joseph Andreano, who also grew up in Rochester, and they were married in August of 1944, when Joseph was on a ten day furlough from the US Army, where he served until the end of WWII. After raising their two daughters, Liz and Vinessa, Grace and Joe moved to Clarendon, NY, where they spent their next fifty-one years together. After the death of her husband, Joseph, in May of 2020, Grace made the brave move West to complete her full life spending time with her family in Oregon. In addition to her two daughters, Grace leaves her youngest sister Libby Carretta and husband, Anthony Carretta and her first cousin Clementine Barclay of Rochester NY. She leaves a number of nieces and nephews, residing in Rochester, Florida, Nevada, California, and the Midwest. She also leaves her grandson, Jed Morrell and wife Allison, and great grandaughter, Olivia of Corvallis, Oregon, and her granddaughter, Liz Dance and husband Aaron, and great grandson, Emmett of Portland, Oregon. Grace’s youngest daughter, Vinessa, currently lives in Bellingham, WA. She also leaves behind three friends and caregivers who helped her through the painful loss of her husband Joseph; Angie Nobles, Della Fisher and Mary Spence. Grace was a kind and loving Spirit who deeply touched all the lives of those she knew. She was a devoted wife and mother who always put others before herself, in everything she did. She was supportive to everyone she knew, and a wonderfully creative homemaker. She loved to cook and sew, and made some lovely ceramics that decorated her home, and the homes of her friends and family. She put her heart and soul into everything she did. Grace was and is a true gem both inside and out. Her loving strength and loyalty, kept both her family of origin, and the family she created with her husband Joseph, going during the challenging Depression and World War II years. Grace was the first born of five children. She is preceded, in death, by her sisters Jessie D’Amico and Angie Dentino, and her brother, Vincent Daddazio, all of Rochester, NY. Grace will be deeply missed and live on in our hearts forever. May her spirit be free forever and surrounded in peace and everlasting love. In Grace’s honor, donations may be made to Hospice of Orleans County, Albion, NY.

Call today to learn more about our program! Sweden awards water district bid The Town of Sweden awarded the Lake/ Redman/Countryview Water District construction bid to Villager Construction, Inc. for a cost of $3,487,900. The project will bring public water to more than 130 properties in the town and is funded by a Rural Development grant of $2,327,000 (which district property owners do not have to repay) and a Rural Development low-interest loan of $2,000,000 (which property owners will pay back over 38 years). The grant to loan ratio is one of the highest awarded by Rural Development. Construction is likely to begin in late March or early April with water line installation complete in November. Restoration work will be completed in the spring of 2022. In a few weeks, residents will receive information from both the Town of Sweden

and the Monroe County Water Authority regarding the next steps and the procedure for signing up for public water. “This district formation is a major accomplishment for the town for several reasons,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “It is the first time that the town was able to qualify for a Rural Development financing package. The bids came in under budget despite the need for significant rock removal that other local towns do not face. We were also able to push through approvals from several government agencies that have been largely shuttered due to COVID. The Town Board, the engineering and finance teams have done an exemplary job with a project that is the largest infrastructure project in the town’s history.” Provided information

Become a creative part of the Hilton Apple Fest tradition The Hilton Apple Fest is looking for a special commemorative logo to celebrate its milestone 40th annual apple harvest celebration and offering community members the chance to design it. Maureen Spindler, a long-time Hilton resident and an organizer of the annual festival, urges those planning to send in a design to use this as a fun way to connect with the history of the Hilton community. Apples, orchards, the old Ho-Jack Railroad line, and lake life are all great concepts to get you started. This year’s chosen logo will be embroidered and printed on hoodies, sweatshirts, t-shirts, and other souvenirs that will be available at this year’s festival, which is set for Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3. The winner also receives a $100 reward and complimentary sweatshirt featuring their winning logo.

“If you’ve been to the Apple Fest, I encourage you to tap into your own Apple Fest memories, check out our past logos online, and think up something fun and original that shows your hometown pride,” Spindler says. “The theme is up to you — there’s no need to be excessively detailed. Just send in something fun, and you might just win!” Those who submitted a design last year are encouraged to update their design to reflect 2021 and resubmit their designs. Submit logo designs to Hilton Apple Fest Logo Contest, PO Box 1, Hilton, NY 14468, or email to info@hiltonapplefest.org no later than Sunday, March 19, 2021. Multiple entries are encouraged but must be original creations and cannot be protected by any previous copyright. Please, no clip art. Registration underway for Sunnking’s 2021 e-Scrap for Camp fundraiser Brockport-based electronics recycler Sunnking has launched registration for its 2021 e-Scrap for Camp fundraiser. The program recycles unwanted company electronics to raise money for Camp Good Days and Special Times, a non-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of life for children, adults, and families whose lives have been affected by cancer. “We want to provide the greatest return to the local kids that are unfortunately adversely affected by cancer and needing outside activities when it’s really hard to get out and do them,” said Adam Shine, Vice President of Sunnking. “Together, with our business partners, we’re focused on making this the biggest and best fundraising year we’ve seen.” Businesses and organizations in the Buffalo and Rochester areas are encouraged to sign-up to collect electronics from their employees, friends, and family members for two weeks. Sunnking provides boxes to gather those devices and offers free,

contactless delivery and pickup. For every pound of electronics recycled from participating organizations during the fundraiser, a portion of the proceeds is donated to Camp Good Days to fund future programs. “We feel incredibly privileged during this time to announce our partnership with Sunnking for the 11th year,” said Lisa Booz, WNY regional director of Camp Good Days & Special Times. “The continuation of our programs through the pandemic is largely thanks to Sunnking’s exceptional efforts and all the local companies taking part.” In 2020, 345 businesses contributed as Sunnking gifted a check worth $11,761 to the non-profit. More than $114,000 has been donated throughout the program’s existence. To participate, businesses must register online at eScrapforCamp.com by March 5. Collections will begin March 29 in Rochester and May 3 in Buffalo. For a list of recyclable materials, visit www.sunnking. com/acceptable-materials. Provided information

CHECK OUT WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING! “From the estimate through the install, it was a great experience. The explanation and detail provided during the estimate visit made the decision to go with Aire Serv easy. The install crew showed up on-time, were friendly, neat, and very attentive to Covid-19 protocol. They left the install area cleaner than it was upon arrival and explained the paperwork, rebate information and operation thoroughly. Great job... highly recommend!” - Brian S. of Rochester, NY

“My furnace would not fire up when the temps started dropping, so Bill came out and assessed the issue. Due to the unit being 28 years old and cost for the replacement part, I figured I would get quotes on a new HVAC system. Tucker came out that same day and walked me through my options. As I have a newborn in the house and no heat, I asked if they had any ideas of how to keep us warm for the month that nearly all HVAC companies are booking out. He called the owner, they moved a few jobs out and managed to install our complete system the next day. The install team (included the owner Rick) all did a great job, were polite, clean and thorough in their work. Tucker was also there as well during the install, helping to support the team. CBP warns residents of phone scam A new type of telephone scam is targeting residents nationwide in an attempt to gain banking information from unsuspecting residents. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents and officers nationwide are continuing to receive numerous calls from residents concerned about unsolicited calls from scammers posing as U.S. Border Patrol agents and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. Residents are reporting the calls are a pre-recorded message stating, “a box of drugs and money being shipped has your (callers) name on it, and it has been intercepted.” The caller is then

instructed to press #1 to speak with a CBP Officer/Agent, which then attempts to get the caller’s banking information. These calls are phone scams/phishing attempts, and residents are urged to not provide the caller with any information. The Department of Homeland Security and CBP does not solicit money over the phone. If such calls are received, people should make a note of the number and any other pertinent details about the call, immediately hang up, and report the incident if possible. Phone scams can be reported to the Federal Trade Commission online at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/. Provided information
