Wheatland-Chili girls soccer coach Gary Ward to retire After 550 wins, three State Championships, nine Section V titles, and hundreds of lives impacted, Coach Gary Ward is hanging up the clipboard for good. For the last 39 years, Ward has coached the girls soccer team at Wheatland-Chili, guiding the Wildcats to incredible heights and sustained success. Now, as he prepares to retire, he has an opportunity to reflect on his career and how far the game has come. A changed landscape When he first started coaching the varsity team in 1982, he was only the second girls soccer coach at Wheatland-Chili. Six years had passed since Title IX ensured equal access to opportunities for female athletes, but legal access didn’t always translate immediately to tangible access. “The early kids were real pioneers, and they took some risks,” Ward says. “We had to fight for field time; we had to fight for equal facilities and participation... They knew how lucky they were to be playing.” Over the years, the girls soccer program improved dramatically. With increased access to fields and facilities, improved training methods, and consistent offseason playing time, the game became much more competitive. Through his coaching career, Ward was continuously impressed by the increased strength, speed, and skills of the female athletes. The women’s game is also much more popular now, due in large part to the success of the Women’s National Team and the strength of college programs across the country. Former player and current Assistant Coach Jen Quinn, who is also Ward’s daughter, credited this visibility

1988 Section V champions.

with the popularity of the sport. “There are a lot more role models for young girls to look up to – aspire to – and work towards. In the 80s, we could barely even watch the Men’s National Team, let alone the Women’s Team or college teams.” But with that visibility comes added pressure. “It’s so hard to take the pressure off the kids now because information is so accessible,” Quinn added. “They put so much pressure on themselves.” The 2020 team is as resilient as any Ward has seen in his 39 years, due to the challenges resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Like every other facet of society, the pandemic has kept people from gathering in groups, so the team has had few opportunities to train, practice, and even bond together as a team. Injuries took a toll this season, and despite requirements that players must wear masks during practices and games, Ward says proudly that “our kids have been great. They haven’t complained. We made it clear what the mask rule is, and they didn’t bat an eye. I couldn’t say more about them.” Looking back When asked to pick just one moment out of his celebrated career that stands out, Ward struggled. “There were so many highlights, and so many great kids,” he said. “I guess one of the most exciting moments would have to be the 2017 State Championship,” which the Wildcats won on a Golden Goal after double-overtime. He also pointed to the other two State Championships in 1991 and 2016 as well. Despite his record of success, Ward makes it very clear that winning isn’t everything. His coaching philosophy is actually quite simple: “I never set out to worry about

Gary Ward celebrating with members of his New York State Champion soccer team in 2016. winning. We try to teach them how to play and approach the game properly. What we say is ‘Go out and give it your best, play the way you’ve been taught, and at the end of the day, we’ll look at the scoreboard to see who won.’ We try to take the pressure off the kids… We want to teach them to compete in a healthy way.” He emphasized that he never saw himself as solely a soccer coach, either. “To me, coaching is teaching… We’re trying to use [soccer] as a vehicle to help our kids grow and be good people.” His players saw that principle firsthand. Abby Jones played for Ward from 1988 to 1991 and led the team to a New York State Championship title in 1991. “He was always so positive, guiding everyone, and brought out the best in us,” Jones said. “The lessons he taught on the field were so relevant in life… He improved your game, certainly, but he also improved your life.” “He was very compassionate and caring for his players, above and beyond coaching on the field,” recalled Jill Farrell, a former player in the 1980s and a current kindergarten teacher at T.J. Connor Elementary School. “A lot of us had him as a teacher too, and he wanted to make sure we were doing well in our studies. He was always really supportive.” This season, Ward coached Farrell’s daughter – not the first time he has coached a second-generation player. “It was cool to see it come full circle,” Farrell said. “I’m glad that they had that opportunity to play together.” She humorously recalled how

earlier this year, her daughter came home after the practice in which Coach Ward finally referred to her by her mother’s name. “He finally did it! He called me Jill!” her daughter had laughed. The impact he has had on players, parents, and the community is unmatched. He has stayed close with countless individuals over the years. For Jones, when she lost family members, Coach Ward was right there, attending the funeral, still serving as a shoulder to lean on. “I hope he knows how many people love him and cherish him.” Highlight of a lifetime After nearly four decades, Ward is stepping away from the sport that has come to define his career. He’s looking forward to spending time with his wife, JoAnn, and hopefully getting back to showing his horses. He plans to continue attending Wheatland-Chili soccer games as a spectator. “I hope I get a free pass,” he joked to Todd Grimes, Wheatland-Chili Athletic Director. “We’ve got some great young kids on the team that I think are going to be great players.” Why now? Ward says that after 39 years of coaching and 50 years of teaching, it’s time. He’s had a great career, and as much as he’ll miss it, sometimes you have to move on. But when he reflects on his coaching career, he doesn’t hesitate. “This has been one of the highlights of my life. Man, it was a ride.” Provided information and photos

Each year, CountryMax holds a popular “Pet Photos with Santa” event at its stores. The retailer decided not to let COVID stop the tradition. While this year won’t quite be the same, it is hoped that everyone can still enjoy their beloved photos with pets and Santa safely at CountryMax. Look for the Christmas Spirit Photo Backdrop Display through Christmas Eve, December 24, at any of the 17 CountryMax stores, and take your pet’s photo when it’s convenient for you. For safety and health reasons, it’s a photo-realistic backdrop scene with Santa; you simply pose in front of it, snap your own photo, and upload it yourself to enter the contest. For every contest entry, CountryMax will donate $1

to a charity fund that will be split equally between four pet and livestock-based charities (up to $2,000). All customers need to do is submit an entry to help a worthy cause this Christmas season. Funds will be equally distributed between Heritage Christian Stables Therapeutic Riding (Rochester), Happy Tails Animal Shelter (Ontario County Humane Society), HumaneCNY (Syracuse), and Purpose Farm (Syracuse). Sweden adopts late fees for dog licensing The Town of Sweden has adopted late fees of $5 per month for dog licenses that are not renewed within 30 days of their annual renewal date. The late fees will begin for dog licenses that renew starting January 1, 2021. The cost of dog licenses that are renewed on time will remain at $8.50 for spayed/neutered dogs and $16.50 for unspayed/unneutered dogs. The purpose of the late fees is to encourage timely renewals. Dog licensing helps ensure that dogs are vaccinated against rabies. The Town of Sweden considers rabies to be a serious public health issue and to that end offers a no-charge rabies clinic each

year. The late fee on dog licenses is another tool to make sure that dogs are vaccinated and that vaccinations are kept current. In the town newsletter that is delivered inside this newspaper, an article explains the changes to dog licensing and impoundment fees in greater detail. At the time the newsletter went to print, the licensing late fee had not been adopted. At its December 8 meeting, the Sweden Town Board did approve the late fee charge to begin January 1, 2021. Assembly members call on FEMA to fund Great Lakes shoreline protection projects Assemblymen Steve Hawley (139th District) and Peter Lawrence (134th District) joined several of their Assembly colleagues in a letter to FEMA seeking to ensure adequate funding for projects necessary to protect Great Lakes shoreline communities and surrounding habitats. Within the letter to FEMA Administrator Peter T. Gaynor, Hawley and others requested the federal government omit cost-sharing requirements that may come with a potential FEMA grant due to the state’s financial constraints. “The people of our shoreline communities have already had to manage both flooding in recent years as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. If we do not prepare now for future flooding, things could become much worse for them given rising water levels in the Great Lakes,” said Hawley. “We need to be proactive in preparing our infrastructure for rising water levels, because every day we are not the problems our shoreline communities will have to face become more dire.” Provided information

The Kitchen Countertop Challenge If you're contemplating a way to heighten the elegance, functionality and resale value of your home, it's wise to take a look at the latest trends in kitchen surfaces. A major kitchen remodel can increase the real value of your home more significantly than any other alteration. It's important to know what styles and materials are most popular with consumers when you select your new kitchen surfaces. Home design experts say homeowners are most interested in natural, highly durable materials this year. Upscale kitchens often include stone countertops, the most popular being granite, marble, quartz and limestone. Granite countertops are a current homeowner favorite because they're the most durable. You can carve a roast, roll pizza dough, or set a hot frying pan directly on granite without damaging it. Although stone is porous, requiring special sealants to keep out mositure, granite is the least absorbent and only requires resealing about once a year. Other popular countertops are stainless steel, tile and plastic laminate. The choice will be determined by the style, color scheme and price of your kitchen.

to our wonderful mom, Jean Mitchell, on December 15th. If you should ask the reason why we love you as we do, you’d always get the same reply... It’s just because you’re you. Hope you have a great day! We wish we could all be together to celebrate this milestone with you but unfortunately we can’t at this time. We just wanted you to know that we are thinking about you and we’ll celebrate together when we can.

Love you lots, your kids and grandkids!!

Spencerport, Someplace Special! d i l a o y H s L oan y p p a H Borrow up to $5,500 McColley’s Irish Pub hosted a celebration for Ethan Haley (lower right) and his family.

Spencerport businesses celebrate 12-year-old’s winning cleat design Twelve-year-old Ethan Haley of Rochester recently won a cleat design contest through the Green Bay Packers as a part of the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” campaign. Star running back Aaron Jones wore Ethan’s award-winning cleats during the Packers win against the Eagles on December 6. The game-worn cleats will be auctioned off with proceeds benefitting Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a nonprofit organization fighting childhood cancer. Ethan received a brain cancer diagnosis in March of 2018. His and his family’s faith, love, and positivity have carried them through the last two-and-a-half years. Ethan said that he wanted to show through his design that his cancer journey has had many colorful moments. The colors show how he’s come from darkness to light. Spencerport business owner Matt Brooks jumped at the opportunity to give back to the Haley family. He invited Ethan and his family to dine and view the game at his restaurant, McColley’s Irish Pub. When asked, Brooks said it was an honor to host Ethan and his family. Ethan’s cool cleat design needed a cool cake to go with it. With just two days notice, Spencerport’s Cakes by Karen worked around the clock Cakes by Karen created an edible to make a replica cleat replica of Ethan’s award-winng cake for Ethan and his family to enjoy. cleat design. In a Facebook post, the Willie Bee Foundation wrote, “It’s amazing to see what can happen when a community comes together and supports one another. Yesterday’s game was a much needed reprieve for the Haley’s. It gave them an opportunity to spend quality time together and celebrate their son’s winning design on national TV.” Jones scored a 77-yard touchdown during the game. “I’m glad I was able to get in the end zone and Ethan was able to see me wear his design, running down the field and getting into the end zone,” Jones said. Amongst the angst of our continuing pandemic, a scene brought joy. As the afternoon of Black Friday waned, looking out our shop windows, we noticed a young family: mother and father with two children pulling a classic red wagon. Chatting, the four passed the Clyde W. Carter Memorial Gazebo alongside the Erie Canal in the Village of Spencerport. Decorative ruby red velvet bows affixed to draped emerald green garland and wreath above, snowflake banners displayed, crayon-colored lights were aglow on its festive tree and railings. It was almost a Currier and Ives holiday greeting card, for in the red wagon was a Christmas tree! In the manner of tradition, at Firemen’s Field, a balsam or fir or pine (just-right) or spruce was selected from an array of fresh, staked trees. Over the years, Boy Scout Troop #92 has sold trees and wreaths, sheltering in the little wooden building, protected from raindrops, cold flurries, wind gusts, or a mixture of the three. Do you remember? This day, tied and trimmed, the chosen pine (just-right) was hoisted and rearranged (just-so). Crossing the parking lot, the chosen pine was readjusted for its journey. Slowly, slowly the family turned onto the historic lift bridge, meandering northward. Surely they must live nearby. Is a friendly dog awaiting their return? Ready to jump, tail wagging, at the first sound of the door latch. Giggling, would the children recount their adventure? Ornaments in boxes: favorite heirlooms, handmade creations, and Disney characters mingle. Construction paper chains, cut and glued, tangle with strings of lights - to become a happy, lifetime memory. Young family, may you enjoy a blessed Merry Christmas 2020! Let us ALL take time to reflect. “Say Thanks, Be Giving. Simple pleasures: smiles and sunrises and sunsets - are free. Eat a cut-out cookie. Mail a note. Play a game. Read a book, turning paper pages. Reuse a gift bag and ribbon. Wear an old sweater. Take a walk. Wave to neighbors. Wonder at nature. Laugh and sing together - then listen to silence. Indulge in nostalgia... Volunteer. Be a friend. Show goodness, kindness - and love. Pray for those who heal and those who protect. Teach tolerance. Stay hopeful, positive - safe and strong. Our community spirit endures. Wishing you Peace, Carol J. Nellis-Ewell Deputy Mayor, Village of Spencerport

politically speaking

Napier steps down as Chairman of the Monroe County Republican Committee Monroe County Republican Chairman Bill Napier announced that he has stepped aside from his position as Monroe County Republican Committee but will continue to assist Republican efforts locally and in his new capacity as Finger Lakes Regional Finance Vice-Chair with the New York State Republican Committee. “Since becoming Monroe Chairman, it has been an honor to work on behalf of the Republican ideals of lowering taxes, eliminating onerous regulatory burdens, and smaller government that is responsive to the people it serves,” said Napier.

“However, it is clear that the challenges facing us as a party, especially during the current pandemic, have given rise to the need for a fresh approach and new leadership at the Monroe County Republican Committee. I’m pleased that Town of Chili Leader Bernie Iacovangelo has agreed to take on the challenge of leading our party going forward.” Napier previously served as Assistant Monroe County Executive under several administrations and has extensive federal, state, and local government and political experience. His previous roles include

Monroe County Communications Director, Chief of Staff of the Majority Caucus for the Monroe County Legislature, and positions in several Congressional offices and presidential campaigns. “I want to thank Bill Napier for his service to the Monroe County Republican Committee,” said Iacovangelo. “We have much work to do, and it is my commitment to provide our party and candidates the tools they require for success. The Monroe County Republican Committee is a team, drawing from hundreds of volunteers and supporters to accomplish our shared goal of

good government for the people of Monroe County.” Bernie Iacovangelo, in addition to his leadership of the Chili Republican Committee, is an attorney and the co-founder and President of Faber Builders Inc. Iacovangelo will serve as acting Chairman of the Republican Committee pending official confirmation at a Convention of the County Committee convention within the next 45 days. Provided information

Looking back at the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic in Hilton-Parma by Amanda Dudley The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives significantly in a short period of time. It seems like the term “social distancing” became common in our vocabulary overnight. Items like hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies, and toilet paper were flying off the store shelves. Face masks went from being recommended to being required almost everywhere. Businesses and schools closed and just recently started reopening with social distancing precautions. We have experienced nothing like this in our lifetimes. As strange as this time may seem, it is not the first time residents of Hilton have had these experiences. According to the CDC, the 1918 H1N1 flu virus caused the deadliest pandemic of the 20th century. Although there is a debate on the origin of the virus, in the United States, it was first identified in military personnel in spring 1918. By the fall of 1918, the virus had spread around the world and became known in the U.S. as the “Spanish Flu.” Our little village of Hilton and town of Parma were not spared from the virus. Beginning in the fall of 1918, the Hilton Record newspaper was commonly reporting on the effects of the virus. The first report of closures was on October 17, 1918, when village and town churches and schools were closed on account of the call to quarantine. By the following week, the library and billiard halls were closed. Local health officers forbid the sale of ice cream by the dish and soft drinks by the glass. The virus was spreading rapidly, and drastic measures were taken to prevent its spread.

This illustration appeared in the Hilton Record on December 12, 1918. Provided by David Crumb.

However, the closures did not last long. On November 4, schools and churches were reopened. Health officers determined it was safe to resume activities, as no new cases had been reported locally within the ten previous days. However, this was shortlived, and by late November, there were more cases of influenza in Hilton than there had been at the time of the first closures in October. Churches and schools were closed again, and all public gatherings were banned. Throughout the winter of 1918 to the spring of 1919, churches and schools in Hilton closed and reopened every few weeks due to the increase or decrease in influenza cases. It was surely a tumultuous time. Health officials released instructions and advice on how to prevent the spread of the “Spanish Flu.” Perhaps surprising is the fact that the advice given to prevent the spread of illness in 1918 is similar to our recommendations on COVID-19 today. According to the Hilton Record article published on October 31, 1918, advice given was to: •Keep away from gatherings and crowds. •Keep away from poorly ventilated and crowded places. •Keep away from cities and villages where influenza prevails. •Don’t visit houses where there is sickness. •Keep your house thoroughly ventilated. •Keep your hands clean, and keep your fingers out of the nose and mouth. •Cover your face with a handkerchief if you cough or sneeze. •Don’t spit anywhere. •If you feel sick at all, go to bed at once and call your physician. With the continued spread of the flu, volunteers were desperately needed to assist with caring for the ill. Rose Ducolon, Chairman of the Hilton Branch of the American Red Cross, published an article in the Hilton Record on December 5, 1918, calling for volunteers to help care for the ill, clean, and prepare food. She pleaded that there were families in the community where every member of the household was ill, and they had no one to care for them. Addressing risk, Rose stated, “The risk we incur by caring for influenza patients is not half so serious as the risk we are taking every day by letting our friends suffer for lack of care.” She further stated as a Christian community and representatives of the American Red Cross, it was the duty of Hilton residents to help the community. Despite the struggles of illness and death caused by the flu, Hilton residents still

found ways to stay positive and uplift their spirits. One way was through humor and music. A comedic song was published in the Hilton Record on November 28, 1918: It’s the Flu When your head is blazing, burning And your brain within is turning Into buttermilk from churning It’s the flu. When your joints are creaking As if all the fiends were reaching All the devils were attacking It’s the flu. Chorus It’s the Flu, Flu, Flu! Which has you, you, you It has caught you and it’s got you And it sticks like glue It’s the very latest fashion It’s the doctor’s pet and passion So sneeze a bit, And wheeze a bit, Ka-chew, chew, chew! Although our present time seems scary, strange, and stressful, it’s important to remember that this is not the first time residents in our area have dealt with, and overcome, a pandemic. As we can see, they followed similar precautions, cared for their neighbors, and even found room for humor in a difficult time. Looking to the past can give us hope that we, too, will overcome. It’s important that we have this history available to us, and why we should document our experience of the COVID-19 pandemic for future generations. Local historians are asking residents to send their observations, experiences, and reactions for the historical record. In Hilton-Parma, the Historian’s office is welcoming residents’ stories in any format. Residents are asked to share whatever they think might be important, interesting, or helpful to people in the future, as to what they have experienced and how they have coped during this challenging time. Those inclined to send in their stories may direct them to the Village of Hilton Historian’s Office, 59 Henry Street, Hilton, NY 14468, or email historian@hiltonny.org. Note from David Crumb, Parma Hilton Historian: The 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic infected about one third of the world’s population of 1.7 billion people. Internet sources note

Rose Ducolon, Chairman of the Hilton Branch of the American Red Cross. Photo from the Parma Hilton Historian’s collection. that it is estimated that 50 million people died worldwide. In the United States it is noted that 675,000 people succumbed to the virus. The population of the United States in 1918 was estimated to be 103 million. Today’s world population is estimated to be 7.8 billion people and the United States is 350 million. The flu in 1918 lasted about 15 months, finally ending in 1920. On top of that, with only the newspapers for communication there was not a lot of thorough documentation as we have today. In Hilton there were some deaths noted in the Hilton Record, but people did not talk a lot about the epidemic. There was no Facebook, no Twitter. People tended not to talk about tragedies and pretty much suffered through them. Of the three people whom I knew who had the Spanish Flu and recovered, all lived into their nineties and one to 100. Could it be that the illness strengthened their immune-system?

If you’re already making plans for your 2021 garden, you might want to consider growing some plants specifically to add to your compost pile. These plants help to add green matter to your pile as well as nutrients. Growing crops to add to the compost pile is a regular part of some organic gardening methods such as permaculture, biodynamic and bio-intensive gardening. Growers utilizing these methods can dedicate large amounts of gardening space to these kinds of crops, but you don’t have to do this. Crops that can be grown for your compost pile are easy to add to your food and flower production beds, and some can also be used to feed your family and to attract pollinators. Perennial legumes like alfalfa or red clover can be planted around the edges of your beds or tucked between rows. When the plants get tall, just cut them back and take those clippings straight to the compost pile or bin. Because these are perennials, they will continue to grow back during the growing season, and you can harvest them several times each year. An additional benefit of legumes is that the roots fix nitrogen in the soil, enriching your soil as they grow. Perennial legumes can also keep weeds at bay in the garden areas that might not otherwise be planted. If you don’t have much space in your garden beds, planting winter rye as a cover crop is an option. After harvest, sow the rye in your garden beds. Cover crops add nutrients to the soil and protect it from harsh winter weather as well as early spring winds. When you are ready to plant, you can mow the cover crop and place clippings in your compost pile or simply till everything directly into the soil. Want to eat your compost pile crop? Plant “forage brassicas” like daikon radish and kale. Seed them more heavily than you would for traditional vegetable gardening and harvest as much as you like for eating. You can also cut stems and stalks for the compost pile. These crops have strong roots

...from Salmon Creek Country Club 355 Washington St. Spencerport, New York 14559

Kale is a plant that can be grown for food and for adding directly to your compost pile or bin to boost “green” ingredients. Photo by Kristina Gabalski. to help feed and aerate your garden soil. Edible beans such as red cowpeas or blackeyed peas are another option. Grow beans as you would any other crop, and after harvest, cut vines and add to your compost pile. Another great benefit of beans and soybeans is that their nitrogen-fixing roots can be left in the garden to enrich the soil. Herbs are another option. Borage (with a lovely bright blue flower that can be used for garnishing) and comfrey work very well for the compost pile. They accumulate zinc and phosphorous and are rapid growers, making it easy to harvest portions of the plant for your compost pile. Additionally, use both as you would any herb, and when they bloom, they will attract bees and butterflies to pollinate your garden crops. Growing some crops for your compost pile is a great way to contribute to the production of organic material, enrich your soil, attract pollinators, and feed your family.
