Bill Selke receives Willie W. Lightfoot Youth Advocate of the Year Award Each year, adults and young adults are recognized for dedication and selfless contributions to our community with the Young Citizen of the Year and Willie W. Lightfoot Youth Advocate of the Year Awards. The 2021 Willie W. Lightfoot Youth Advocate of the Year Award highlighted some exceptional individuals this year. A lifetime resident of Monroe County and long-time North Greece resident, William “Bill” Selke, was recently nominated and recognized by Monroe County Legislator Blake Keller on behalf of the County Legislature for his genuine passion and commitment to changing the world by

making a positive and lasting mark on the lives of area youth. At 90 years old, this passion has never been stronger. Selke is known for his vital role in many local groups and events across Monroe County, including the Youth Advisory Board, Intergenerational Fishing Day, the Youth Bureau Senior Holiday Ball, the Greece Kiwanis Festival of Youth, and more. Although COVID-19 and poor weather conditions led to the eventual cancellation of the ceremony, Selke was able to receive his award from Legislator Keller at the Parma Town Hall. From left to right, Clarendon Historian Melissa Ierlan, Dr. Rozenn Bailleul-LeSuer, Sue Savard of the Emily L. Knapp Museum, and Raymond Santoro of the Holley Historical Society who provided extra muscle to get the eagle to the second floor of the Morgan-Manning House.

The eagle has landed in Brockport For a number of years, the Emily L. Knapp Museum in Brockport has been the home of two taxidermy golden eagles. Although they were treasured artifacts, the museum had limited space in which to display both of them. For a short time, one of the eagles was on loan to the Clarendon Historic Society. The only information the museum had was on a scrap of paper indicating that one of the eagles had been prepared by Nathan Locke Davis and was part of the William Palmer collection.

After further research on Ancestry. com, it was discovered that Nathan was the child of Mary A. Locke, born in the town of Sweden in 1840. Mary married Walter Davis in 1875. Their son Nathan later settled in California and became a taxidermist. The Locke family’s history in Brockport and the town includes both the Covell and Comstock families. Recently, Dr. Rozenn Bailleul-LeSuer, curator at the Morgan-Manning House, has turned one of the building’s display rooms into a bird sanctuary in honor of Gifford Morgan who had a special fondness for wildlife and birds in particular. Gifford, D.S. Morgan’s youngest son, settled in Brockport and eventually acquired the Blodgett property on the east side of Lake Road in Clarkson. By restoring the original Blodgett millpond and excavating a second basin, Gifford created on his land what he hoped would become a wildlife preserve and a sanctuary for migrating birds. The room at the Morgan-Manning House now showcases many bird pictures and dioramas prepared by local taxidermists David Bruce, George Guelf, and Carl Akeley, and it seemed a perfect location to hold and display the eagle. Sweden Assessor will conduct 2022 update The Sweden Town Assessor has been contacted by the New York State Office of Real Property Services (NYS ORPS) to perform a 2022 assessment update of residential, commercial, and vacant properties in order to maintain an equalization rate of 100% and remain eligible for state aid. However, Sweden assessments continue to lag behind market value, according to NYS ORPS. NYS law requires properties to be assessed at market value. Some residents ask what will happen if sales prices drop? Historically, that has not happened in western New York. If it does happen in the Town of Sweden, Baker says she will address it at that time. In the meantime, change of assessment notices will be mailed April 1, 2022. Almost every property owner in the Town of Sweden will be receiving one. Provided information

Ruiz breaks scoring record; named RWC Male Scholar Athlete of the Month Dylan Ruiz is goal-oriented. In fact, no player in the history of Roberts Wesleyan College men’s soccer has scored more goals than the 50 Ruiz has accumulated in his first four seasons as a Redhawk. Ruiz delivered one of the signature moments of Roberts’ fall sports season by scoring a hat trick in a 4-1 win over Lancaster Bible College in the National Christian College Athletic Association Tournament on November 17. His second goal eclipsed a 41-year-old record set by Jaime Rivera from 1977-80, and Rivera made the trip from his home in Miami to witness history at his alma mater. Ruiz, who scored 17 goals and earned first-team East Coast Conference honors this fall, shared an emotional embrace with Rivera on the sideline after eclipsing the mark. Ruiz, who was born in Canada but spent a great deal of his youth in Mexico City, where his parents Carolyn and Moises served as missionaries, is also driven to succeed

Dylan Ruiz is the top goal scorer in RWC men’s soccer history.

in the classroom, where he carries a 3.47 grade-point average. An accounting major who is considering becoming a CPA, Ruiz has been selected Roberts Male Scholar Athlete of the Month for November. Ruiz, who plans to return for a fifth soccer season in 2022, took a few moments to discuss his record-breaking career, relationship with Rivera, and spiritual growth at Roberts. The interview has been lightly edited for length and clarity. Soccer is huge in Mexico. Is that where you developed your passion for the game? “Yeah, definitely there is nothing quite like it. In Mexico, anywhere you go there are people playing on the street. You go out with your friends and play on the street with a couple of rocks and nets. Just growing up in that culture, it is something that everyone does. I have two older brothers who are seven and five years older than me. They were always really into soccer, and it was kind of a way for me to connect with them and bridge the age gap through sport. So, soccer has always been a passion of mine just because of the way that I grew up, the culture I was in, and the opportunities that it has given me.” Take me back to the moment when you became the career goal-scoring leader at Roberts Wesleyan College. “It’s pretty awesome. When I play soccer, I don’t have other thoughts in my head; it’s all just about that game, that play, and what I’m doing in that moment. My head just kind of clears, and that is one reason why I love soccer. Now, afterwards and kind of seeing the impact and seeing Jaime making all of that effort to be there and see it, it really does feel amazing just to leave my mark and have my name be at Roberts forever. To be able to do that for this school is awesome because I love this school. It has given me some of the greatest moments of my life.”

What is the connection between you and Jaime Rivera like? “He’s a great guy, and he’s a funny guy. He’s just very genuine, and he wants the best for everyone. I respected that, and I wanted to be able to do it for him. So, when I scored it, and I saw him there on the sideline, I had to go give him some respect, and he passed the torch to me.” You switched your major three times; why did you choose accounting? “I have always been someone who likes numbers, and accounting really drew me in. Someone explained it as a way of painting a picture with numbers. You can take the numbers that a company has in its statements; you can take those and figure out what is possible for a company to do and how they’ve gotten to where they’ve gotten. Unraveling what a business truly is through the numbers is what drew me in.” Why did you decide to come back, and what can we expect from you next season? “Everyone always says that college soccer comes and goes really quickly, and you need to enjoy it while you can. I plan on taking this opportunity and just finish with a bang. Hopefully, there are a lot of goals still to come. The extra year actually allows me to get enough credits to sit for the CPA exam while also playing soccer here at Roberts, so it is a win-win.” Was the faith aspect of Roberts something that appealed to you? “Yes. I have always been around the church and I have always been a Christian, so Roberts emphasized that, and I have actually grown in my faith a lot since I came to Roberts. It has been one of the greatest decisions of my life because if I was surrounded by other things, I don’t know if my faith would be as strong or as important to me as it is today.” Provided information and photo

John Nugent December 2, 2021. John Nugent was a lover of trees, golf, and basset hounds. He was known by many as “Nuge” and known by even more as simply “Bud”. He was an entrepreneur with an illustrious career spanning over 40 years in the lawn and tree business - many of which were spent helming his own company Nugent Lawn & Tree Experts. He touted an impressive New York State Certified Arborist title and was a highly skilled tree climber. John was born in Salamanca, NY on September 13, 1953 to parents Harold F. and Mary Gaynor Nugent. Following his graduation from Salamanca High School in 1971, he moved to the Rochester area to attend and graduate SUNY Brockport in 1975 where he met his wife Judy of 35 years. He remained a fixture of the Brockport community where his business was based. When he wasn’t working he was golfing. Never one to sit idle - upon retirement from tree climbing it became his passion, his new career. He was driven by an insatiable desire to deepen his knowledge about the game and constantly improve upon his skills. A kind hearted, fun loving man with a quirky sense of humor, he had a deep love for his friends and family. To know him was to love him. He lived for holiday traditions, The Beatles, and spending time with his grandchildren. John is predeceased by his wife Judy, his brother Jim, and his beloved Basset Hounds Forrest and Arnold. He is survived by daughters Megan (Remy) Cherin and Kelly Nugent; sister Kathy Nugent; sister Molly Nugent; grandchildren Jude and Edie Cherin; 3 nieces and 4 nephews. Small businesses encouraged to apply for grant program New York State’s small businesses are encouraged to apply for the $800 million COVID-19 Pandemic Small Business Recovery Grant Program. Grants are available for eligible small businesses that have revenues up to $2.5 million and are experiencing hardship due to COVID-19. Additional information and the application are available at https://nysmallbusinessrecovery.com/. Empire State Development and Lendistry, the minorityled Community Development Financial Institution that was selected to administer the program, are accepting and reviewing applications on a rolling basis. There is no deadline at this time. Questions about the program can be directed to Lendistry at 877-721-0097. Grants for a minimum award of $5,000 and a maximum award of $50,000 are calculated based on a New York State business’ annual gross receipts for 2019. Reimbursable COVID-19 related expenses must have been incurred between March 1, 2020 and April 1, 2021 and can include payroll costs; commercial rent or mortgage payments for New York State-based property; payment of local property or school taxes; insurance and utility costs; costs of personal protection equipment necessary to protect worker and consumer health and safety; costs for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, or other machinery and equipment; and supplies and materials necessary for compliance with COVID-19 health and safety protocols. Additionally, the limitation for businesses that received Federal Paycheck Protection Program loans has been increased from $100,000 to $250,000. State Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball is especially urging those in the agricultural industry to apply. Ball said, “There are so many agribusinesses that are still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and facing many challenges after having lost markets at schools and restaurants. This grant program provides an opportunity for our food and beverage producers, our farmers, and our growers to access some much-needed capital to help recover their losses and rebuild their businesses.” To help those in the agricultural industry apply for the COVID-19 Pandemic Small Business Recovery Grant Program, the Department of Agriculture and Markets is hosting a webinar for interested businesses on December 13 at 11 a.m. The webinar will provide an overview of the grant program, the level of funding available, and how to apply for funds. To access the webinar, please visit https:// bit.ly/3pAvqie. For additional information regarding the various resources available to support businesses seeking pandemic relief, ESD has created a webpage, https://esd.ny.gov/business-pandemic-recovery-initiative. The site is continuously updated as more details and funding information becomes available. Provided information

HMW Fire District Election To the residents of Clarkson, Hamlin, and Kendall who live in the boundaries of the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District and are registered voters, there is one more election left this year that most people know nothing about. It is the election for Fire Commissioner; the election is on December 14, 2021, at HMW Station 1, 1521 Lake Road, from 6 to 9 p.m. All Fire Districts have elections every year. My name is Michael Marchetti and I am a lifelong resident of the Town of Hamlin. I have been volunteering my time to the residents of Hamlin for 40-plus years for many organizations, not just the Hamlin Fire Department. For the past five years, I served as a Fire Commissioner along with being an active member of the Hamlin Fire Department, and I would like to serve the community as Fire Commissioner for another five years with your support. I pride myself with the health and safety of the firefighters who serve you, and the appearance of the three District buildings the firefighters work out of. I also try to save the taxpayers money anytime I can without hindering the safety of our members, while keeping your lifesaving equipment up to date to handle any situation that we may be dispatched to. I am proud to volunteer for our community. For those of you who know me and do not live within the Hamlin Morton Walker Fire District, if you have family or friends who do, I ask you to please encourage them to support me. With social media being such a big part in the world of communication these days, feel free to reach out to me on Facebook if you would like to help me inform all the people in our community. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Please remain positive at all times and feel free to reach out to me anytime. Thank you for your time and, hopefully, your support.

Advent Services:

What I learned talking to Hamlin residents

Blue Christmas Service

I love going door to door talking to people because most people will gladly tell you their concerns. In my handout flyer and ads, I stated that I wanted to help Steve Baase; I had served as Town Supervisor for six years. I would like to share the residents’ concerns. I am concerned about Steve Baase following in Eric Peters’ footsteps; with no set office hours, many residents said that they were unable to speak to the Supervisor. Voice messages were not answered. Communication is a very important facet of the Supervisor. As Supervisor, I felt it was important to have all department heads at the Town Board meetings to give reports. I noticed that the Fire Marshall, Dog Warden, and Assesor were not present at recent Town Board meetings. Every department is accountable to the residents of our town to make it better. While I was Supervisor, the staff also met monthly to discuss upcoming events. It is necessary to keep everybody informed. When it was time to pick my Deputy Supervisor, I sought advice from my mentor, former Supervisor Charlie Maier. He said you should always go with the senior member of the Town Board. That was great advice. I urge all residents to get involved in the Town – go to a Town Board, Zoning, Planning, and Conservation meeting; volunteer with the Recreation Department, Dog Shelter, Library, or Life Solutions.

Hilton

The Little Village With The Big Heart!

Hilton sophomore completes Eagle project Hilton sophomore Blake Mott, son of Brian and Jessica Mott of Huffer Road, successfully completed his Eagle Scout project which consisted of restoring four Historic Markers for the Town of Parma and Village of Hilton. Blake demonstrated his leadership skills throughout the project. He planned, communicated, executed the work, and reported to the authorities with professionalism and timeliness. Four signs were removed from their locations, sandblasted, primed, and painted with New York State Historic Marker new colors of blue and yellow. Paul Kron provided instruction on sandblasting and the use of his shop for that task. Once restoration and repainting was completed, the Parma Parks Department had them reinstalled. Westside News East and West Editions - December 12, 2021 11

The silent pandemic: COVID-19’s impact on mental health Forty-one percent of adults report struggling with mental health or substance use, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, up from 20 percent pre-COVID. Nearly one in three adults now report having symptoms of anxiety or depression. “Behind the masks, people are hurting,” says Geoffrey Hopkins, MD, Senior Medical Director for Behavioral Health at Excellus BlueCross BlueShield. “As we approach another year of living with COVIDDr. Geoffrey Hopkins 19, even more at-

tention needs to be paid to mental health challenges as our country wrestles with finding its new normal.” The National Center for Health Statistics, a part of the CDC, is monitoring the situation closely. In April 2020, it partnered with the Census Bureau to conduct an ongoing Household Pulse Survey designed to complement the ability of the federal statistical system to quickly respond to and provide relevant information about the impact of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S. The survey is collecting information on symptoms of anxiety and depression experienced by participants. Results have been consistent since the pandemic began, with 30.8 percent of respondents reporting symptoms of anxiety and depression in Phase 1 of the survey (April 23 -May 5, 2020) and 27.3 percent reporting symptoms in Phase 3.2 (September 29 – October 11,

2021). For comparison, a similar pre-COVID NHIS survey conducted in 2019 found just 10.8 percent of adults aged 18 and over reported symptoms of anxiety disorder or depressive disorder. “If there’s any good news since the start of COVID, it’s that Americans have embraced telemedicine, with its increased access to behavioral health services,” says Hopkins. “Patients can see a specific behavioral health provider on an ongoing basis from the privacy of their home, where they feel comfortable and can call at their convenience.” He also points out that in areas that have a shortage of behavioral health professionals, especially those who treat children and adolescents, telemedicine offers patients access to behavioral health services that otherwise may not have been readily available to them.

Specialists providing care via telemedicine for behavioral health treatment include psychiatrists, social workers, psychologists, counselors, and nurse practitioners. Services include treatment of mental health conditions such as generalized anxiety disorders, major depressive disorders, dysthymic disorders, posttraumatic stress disorders, and adjustment disorders. Substance use disorders treated by telemedicine providers include opioid use disorder, alcohol use disorder, and tobacco use disorder. “If you’re dealing with mental health issues or substance use, speak with your primary care doctor, or ask your health insurer to help you find a behavioral health provider,” advises Hopkins. “You can get through this, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to suffer in silence behind your mask.” Provided information and photo

Sinatra’s Christmas In Vegas features impressionist Frank Torchio as he performs many classic holiday songs with singing and comedic impressions of Dean Martin, Jimmy Durante, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Elvis, and more. Shanthi Kelley joins Frank as his special guest soloist. Along with classic holiday tunes, the show highlights some of the greatest hits, including “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” “Santa Baby,” “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Blue Christmas,” “I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm,” “Come Fly With Me,” “New York, New York,” and many more. Frank Torchio has been performing his impressions in New York and Florida for decades. In the 1980s he performed at comedy clubs in Manhattan, such as The Comic Strip and The Improv. In 1995, Frank won first place as Rochester’s Funniest Bigshot at Rochester’s Geva Theatre fundraiser, Stand Up for Geva. In 2003, Frank began singing with Nik Entertainment’s Rochester Rat Pack and shortly thereafter, he formed Frank’s Rat Pack.

Opinion/Comments Decreasing the farm laborer threshold: A threat to New York’s farms and families As the former owner and operator of our family farm, I know firsthand that running a farm or an agribusiness is a uniquely challenging undertaking, and if we fail to recognize how these businesses operate in the real world, it will be the death knell for family farms in New York state. I say this because recently many have called for farm worker overtime to be reduced from the 60-hour threshold established by the Farm Laborers “Fair” Labor Practices Act in 2019 to 40 hours. As well-intentioned as this idea may sound, this demand comes from a lack of understanding regarding how farms and agribusinesses actually operate. If it were implemented, I fear the only farms that could afford to comply would be large, corporate-operated ones, as the family farms we know and love in our communities would be driven out of business. To give insight as to why this could happen, simply put, agricultural work isn’t a 9-to-5 job. Farms operate on schedules that are at the mercy of Mother Nature. During the planting and harvest season, it’s often necessary to work from sunrise to sunset, while other seasonal periods could warrant fewer hours of work. This proposal fails to acknowledge this reality, as well as the broader consequences that could arise from decreasing this threshold. We don’t have the luxury of having 12 months of growing and harvesting seasons, we are not Florida or California! If we begin to lose our farms, which already face many competitive disadvantages compared to out-of-state competitors, farm workers, in turn, will lose their jobs. When that happens, they may very well seek opportunities working for competitors in other states, creating a vicious cycle in which job openings and our farm workforce disappear in tandem, harming the very people the policy sought to help. We should also bear in mind that our dairy farmers are beholden to price controls that limit their ability to in-

crease their prices to recoup overhead costs. At the end of the day, all farmers are price-takers, meaning that they sell their goods at prices set by processors, distributors and facilities. Farmers, here in New York, are often unable to meet the low costs sought by these purchasers. Even as things stand now, prices on our produce are so high that many New York City schools order apples from Washington state. If the overtime threshold were to be lowered at all, or to 40 hours, it’s likely it would no longer be profitable to produce many beloved crops here in New York. Our produce would then be less fresh, less plentiful and more expensive. During a year in which we’ve seen unprecedented increases in food prices in stores, where profits don’t directly benefit farmers, the last thing we need is to deliver another gut-punch from Albany to families finding it increasingly difficult to nourish their loved ones. Additionally, farmers have seen the cost of feed, fuel, equipment and other goods they need skyrocket due to inflation. My hope is that the Farm Laborers Wage Board, along with Gov. Hochul, as a native of upstate New York, listens to the concerns of our upstate farmers on the many implications of this issue, instead of ignoring those concerns for the sake of appeasing partisan activists who lack insight into the day-to-day operations of a farm. In rural upstate New York, agriculture is more than an economic sector, it’s a way of life. This proposal jeopardizes the existence of farms that have been pillars of our community for generations. To imagine our region without family farms is like imagining New York City without skyscrapers. My hope is that on this issue, if no other, our concerns will not fall on deaf ears. Assemblyman Steve Hawley 139th District, (R,C,I-Batavia)

Byron-Bergen student organizes ghost tour at Mount Rest Cemetery When Byron-Bergen senior Libby Piper and her mom, Byron-Bergen teacher Heather Painting, went on local ghost tours, she thought, “Bergen could do this.” This year, Piper and Painting began planning a local historical ghost tour. They started by speaking to the Bergen Historical Society, who provided information about the people buried at Mount Rest Cemetery. Next, it was finding actors to portray the former residents – so Piper decided to get the community involved. “I thought it would be a great idea to involve the school in the Bergen community,” said Piper. “Some of the drama students agreed to portray the people that are buried in the cemetery.” Prior to the event, Bergen Mayor Anna Marie Barclay worked with Piper and Painting to organize an event in Hickory Park to complement the ghost tour. There were food trucks and performances by The Charlie Mitchell Group, and tickets to the ghost tours sold out – even after adding additional tour slots. The front pavilion was decorated with Halloween ghosts and witches, Young Life sold pumpkins, student-made scarecrows were displayed, proposals for park plantings were presented, Greg’ry’s served baked goods, and ice cream treats were sold by the

Methodist Church. Attendees had dinner, enjoyed music, and went on the ghost tour. There were approximately 250 people in attendance, with between 90 and 100 people taking the tour. “As a retired teacher, I am always looking for opportunities to work with students, include them in community activities, and bring the community together,” said Barclay. “This seemed an opportunity to do so.” The event also ended up being a way to honor former village historian Ray MacConnell, who recently died. The historical ghost tour featured students and faculty members dressed as deceased members of the Bergen community who are buried in Mount Rest Cemetery in the village. The “ghosts” told stories of events in their lives as the “tourists” made their way through the cemetery. The stories they told were from MacConnell’s writings and research. Byron-Bergen drama teacher Larry Tallman participated as a ghost on the ghost tour. He took on the role of Eaton Mann, an eclectic Batavian photographer and musician. “It was incredibly exciting to have that opportunity, to have a student take that initiative, and to come up with such a creative way to raise money,” said Tallman. “It was

The roles were reversed as Byron-Bergen drama teacher Larry Tallman took direction from senior Libby Piper who spearheaded the ghost tour. even more exciting for me to be a part of the whole thing as an actor and being directed by my student.” Piper and Barclay have heard nothing but positive feedback and are looking forward to expanding the event for next year with more ghosts, tour slots, and community involvement. “Just yesterday, Mr. McGee stopped me in the hallway and told me he’s heard nothing but great things about it, so that was really great for me to hear,” said Piper. “I’ve received lots and lots of positive feedback about it.” Due to the amount of input and effort, Piper decided that the proceeds from the ghost tours and festival would be donated to the Byron-Bergen drama department, the Cemetery Association, and the Bergen Historical Society. In its first year, the event raised $900. Provided information and photos
