Ogden town budget shows decrease in tax rate After slight tax increases in 2017 and 2018, with a larger tax rate cut in 2019 due to the Town revaluation project without exceeding the tax cap, the Town of Ogden will once again not exceed the tax cap in 2021. “More importantly, due to the 2018 revaluation of town and village properties, the Town of Ogden exhibited strict due diligence to ensure a decrease in the tax rate to combat the revaluation in 2019,” stated Ogden Town Supervisor Gay Lenhard. There was a 3.12 percent decrease for all residents, or eighteen-cents ($0.18), in town taxes to a rate of $5.59 per thousand. Ogden town taxes in the Village of Spencerport showed a 4.71 percent, or, twenty-cent ($0.20) decrease, to $4.05 per thousand. “In 2021, despite the mounting uncertainties regarding COVID-19, there will not be an increase in the tax rate, and taxpayers will continue to be taxed at the lower rate from the 2019 tax cut,” Lenhard said. These numbers reflect an ongoing effort of balancing tax rates between the two entities as prescribed by the New York State Auditor. “I am very pleased that Ogden taxpayers will not be seeing an increase in taxes,” said Supervisor Lenhard. “My department heads and partners on the town board have done a tremendous job ensuring that vital services continue to be delivered while keeping a watchful eye on spending, especially during these very trying times. This is a win for all of our residents.” The public is invited to attend a public hearing regarding the 2021 Budget and Special Districts on Wednesday, October 28, at 7 p.m. in the meeting room at the Ogden Community Center, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport. A copy of the budget will be available at the Ogden Town Clerk’s Office and on the town’s website, www.ogdenny.com, prior to the public hearing. Provided information

Hilton educators receive Distinguished Teacher Honors from former students Hilton High School teachers Michael Brooke-Gay and Jared Streiff were recently honored in the Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) Distinguished Teacher Recognition Program. Brooke-Gay, a chemistry teacher, was nominated by Julia Wuest, Hilton Class of 2016. “Mr. Brooke-Gay is the kind of teacher every kid hopes to see written on their schedule. He is enthusiastic, personable, challenging and compassionate,” said Wuest. “He comes to school each day genuinely looking to help students learn and grow, not just as scientists, but as people and young adults.” Streiff, a music teacher and Jazz Ensemble director, was nominated by Daniel Keirsbilck, Hilton Class of 2017. “Jazz was a class that I looked forward to each day, and it is one of the things I miss most about high school,” said Keirsbilck. “Mr. Streiff is an exceptional teacher and a caring person.” As Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar Award recipients, Wuest and Keirsbilck were invited to nominate

a teacher for the Distinguished Teacher Recognition Program. They are among the top one percent of R.I.T. undergraduate students who are able to maintain a high standard of academic excellence while also giving back to their community through civic or volunteer work, conducting research, or being engaged in a co-op or work in their field of study. An awards ceremony is normally held in March, but was canceled due to the pandemic. Brooke-Gay and Streiff each received a framed certificate, copy of their nomination and program, and a personal letter from Ellen Granberg, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. Public meeting on Brockport’s community solar program set for October 15 The Village of Brockport, along with the Village of Lima, are bringing community solar to all eligible residents and small businesses. As a result of rulings from the Public Service Commission, and actions taken by the municipalities, the villages are on a path to implement an opt-out community solar program. The benefit of the program includes guaranteed annual savings of eight to ten percent off of the entire electric bill for program participants. In addition, no action will be needed on the part of the eligible customers in order to participate. There are no additional

contracts, credit checks, or bills. Participants will continue to receive a utility bill from National Grid, and a new line item will appear in the miscellaneous section. The new line will show a price reduction and will likely be called “CDG value stack credit,” the formal language for savings from a community solar field. National Grid’s role remains unchanged. Community members will receive a letter with program details as the program gets closer to launching. The letter will be on municipal letterhead and be signed by Mayor Blackman.

A second public meeting will be held on October 15 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be open to the public with limited in-person attendance at the Village Court, 49 State Street, and available on Zoom and Facebook Live via Village of Brockport’s Facebook page. Find the Zoom Link under News and Events at www.brockportny.org. Questions can be submitted in advance or during the meeting by emailing mblackman@brockportny.org. Provided information

Call to help local farm impacted by theft A lot of folks have enjoyed getting farm-fresh produce at Partyka’s stand at the corner of Sweden-Walker Road (Rt. 260) and Roosevelt Highway (Rt. 18). It’s always been an honor system - select your food and pay in the drop box. I have been happy to be able to get my fresh veggies this way, and to feel good folks were paying honestly. Until two weeks ago. The sign and destroyed lockbox tell the story - a robbery (see photo above). Now Partyka has lost food and money, and we have lost this iconic stand and a part of our way of rural life. We can get produce other places but that will not make Partyka whole. So here is my suggestion. If you were a customer, consider sending Partyka a small donation with a note of encouragement for them to continue farming. The address is Partyka Farms, 1420 County Line Road, Kendall, NY 14476.

I would like to respond to the courageous and anonymous letter from the “Assemblage” in the October 4 edition of this paper. Being a knuckle-dragging school taxpayer for over 30 years in my beloved Spencerport, I feel that I have the right to state my opinion of which direction the education of our children takes. Let me first say that I respect all human beings, regardless of race, creed, religion (or fill in the blanks). Having said that, I reject any educational system that promotes and teaches hatred and discrimination of those who don’t look or think alike, which seems to be the tone of this so called “Assemblage.” I was always taught that skin color doesn’t matter. Don’t hate me because of mine. Having added my two cents, here is a list of my demands: 1. Stop bringing outside agitators into our peaceful community who want to hijack our school system. 2. Teachers, teach the basics (math, art, geography, etc.) and leave the brainwashing of all types out of the classroom. 3. That the “Assemblage” remember who it is that is footing the bill for your salary and education. Take a look at the annual school budget. The time is long overdue for people to take a breath and reflect on the blessings we all enjoy. The Spencerport community has always been peaceful, without anybody being oppressed or discriminated against. The Ogden Police have always been friendly, efficient, and respectful, although I’m sure some miscreants would disagree. Thanks for your input, but I doubt that the majority of Spencerport residents would agree to keep paying the salary of someone who clearly has a hatred for police and those who disagree with him, teaching our children those very same emotions.

New app notifies users of potential virus exposure while maintaining privacy On October 1, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the launch of a COVID-19 exposure notification mobile app that will serve as a crucial tool to supplement the effort to trace and contact individuals subject to a COVID exposure. The app, COVID Alert NY, notifies users of potential COVID-19 exposure while maintaining user privacy and security. The free mobile app - available to anyone 18 or older who lives, works, or attends college in New York - is available for download from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. COVID Alert NY is available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Bengali, Korean, Russian, and Haitian Creole. The app uses Exposure Notification System technology developed by Google and Apple to strengthen contact tracing programs statewide. COVID Alert NY is completely anonymous and does not track or collect any location data or personal data from your phone. The Exposure Notification System uses Bluetooth Low Energy technology to detect when another phone with the same app is within six feet. Proximity is measured, but not geographic location. After downloading the app, users must opt-in to receive “Exposure Notifications.” As individuals go about their day, the app will use Bluetooth to sense any “close contact” - other app users who are within six feet of you for more than 10 minutes. When the app senses a close contact, your phone will exchange a secure random code with the close contact’s phone. Of note, your location, name or personally identifiable data are never disclosed. If you test positive for COVID-19, a public health representative from the local health department will call as part of the state’s contact tracing program and ask if you are willing to anonymously notify your “close contacts” by uploading your app’s anonymous close contact codes. Each day, the app will compare your list of close contact codes to the list of codes associated with positive COVID-19 app users. If there’s a match, you will get an Exposure Alert, along with appropriate next steps to stay safe and prevent community spread like self-quarantining and getting tested. The COVID Alert app never reveals the identity of the COVID19 positive individual. The COVID Alert NY app will work in conjunction with similar apps in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania,

allowing New Yorkers to continue to receive exposure notifications when exposed to residents of those states. If a New York State resident travels to one of those states and is exposed to someone with COVID-19 who has an equivalent app, the resident will receive a notification. COVID Alert NY provides users with the latest information about COVID-19 in the state, including publicly reported testing data. In addition, the app features a Health Log where users can anonymously record daily symptoms. “New York State has led the nation in our pandemic response, and we are thrilled to augment our already robust contact tracing program with this innovative technology

Hilton The Little Village with the Big Heart Hilton’s MacKenzie to be featured during Hero Dog Awards® airing October 19 Emmy-winning television star Carson Kressley, who hosted the inaugural broadcast of the American Humane Hero Dog Awards®, is returning to host the two-hour 10th anniversary celebration of the awards on Hallmark Channel on Monday, October 19, at 8 p.m. This star-studded annual celebration of heroes on both ends of the leash honors outstanding working dogs from around the country. Hilton is home to MacKenzie, who was voted Hero Shelter Dog of the Year. Born with a cleft palate, MacKenzie struggled for almost a year before life-saving cleft palate surgery allowed her to eat and drink on her own. She takes on a mother role to other rescued babies (regardless of species or size) and teaches them how to socialize, play, and have good manners. MacKenzie also interacts with children at schools so they learn to be open-minded toward animals and people with physical differences. The program will honor MacKenzie and six other courageous canines whose work has improved and saved lives, and will reveal which dog will be honored with the country’s top “American Hero Dog” title for 2020. The winner, one of 408 original entrants, was determined on the basis of more than one million votes by the American public and the deliberations of a panel of celebrity judges, including Jamie Chung, Erik Estrada, Danielle Fishel, Daniel Henney, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Marcus Scribner, Alexa and Carlos PenaVega, and Ariel Winter.

2020 Erie Canalway Photo Contest winners announced Judges selected 12 photographs representing the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor for the organization’s 15th Annual Erie Canalway Photo Contest. Winning images, including third place winners from Kyle Preston, of Brockport, and Joe Pompili, of Spencerport, capture the beauty and uniqueness of the waterway, canal communities, and landscapes. The images and complete list of winners can be viewed online at https://eriecanalway. org/gallery/photo-contests. They will also be featured in the 2021 Erie Canalway calendar, available for free at libraries, visitor centers, and by request beginning in December. New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “As New Yorkers, we are lucky – it’s easy to take for granted the natural beauty around every corner. Brockport lost a bit of its living history on September 30 with the death of Frank Sacheli. Frank, who celebrated his 100th birthday in May, died a week after the passing of his longtime companion, Antoinette Ercolano. Frank’s most notable contribution to Brockport’s history was his leadership of the group that defeated the urban renewal plan that would have destroyed our commercial district. The plan called for the demolition of 106 commercial structures and 75 dwellings, including the finest Victorian streetscape in the Rochester area. As mayoral candidate, Frank and two running mates were denied listing on the 1965 Village election ballots for technical reasons. They then ran as write-in candidates. All three were elected, with Frank out-voting the incumbent, 491-431. They soon scuttled the urban renewal plan. Frank was also a very loyal alum of the college. He had graduated in 1945 after two years of service in the Marine Corps. He served as president of the Alumni Association

Voices of Freedom Summer to begin streaming on October 26 During the summer of 1964, months before a momentous presidential election, hundreds of college students from the north traveled to Mississippi intent on registering some of the state’s Black citizens to vote. Letters and journalistic accounts of what transpired that summer have been gathered into a dramatic documentary, Voices of Freedom Summer, which is being co-produced by SUNY Brockport’s Department of Theatre and Music Studies along with The Brockport Office of Community Development and Intercultural Center. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic protocols, the piece will be presented as streamed content, premiering on Monday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m. The video will be available in an on-demand basis through November 3, Election Day. Though the event is free, patrons must register online at fineartstix.brockport.edu to receive the link to view the performance. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. on October 12, and patrons may contact the Tower Fine Arts Center box office for guidance, if necessary, at 395-2787. Frank Kuhn, a professor in the Department of Theatre and Music Studies, created the piece while teaching at The University of Southern Mississippi, and is directing it again. “When I mounted this piece in Mississippi in the late 1990s,” Kuhn recalls, “someone asked why I would want to ‘dig up them old bones.’ Both Black and white parents

of my Southern Miss students wondered the same thing.” Being a Northerner who lived and worked in Mississippi gave Kuhn an interesting perspective. He admits that “more than one person commented that it took an outsider to put the project together. [The state of Mississippi] has changed, but not enough. When I taught there… there was much conscious and unconscious stereotyping and de facto segregation. On the other hand, I never saw graffiti with the ‘n-word’ there.” Putting together a production during a pandemic meant facing numerous challenges. One of them would be a need to rehearse the cast individually. This forced separation does not help when it comes to traditional cast bonding, either socially or over the difficult themes in which Voices trades. But working with them has led Kuhn to believe “our students are of a generation that has a dedication to equity, inclusion, and parity in general, and against discrimination, more than many recent generations. In conversations about the events that transpired this past summer, it seems that the students relate to the material because they see similarities between that time and this. And, if there is any positive comparison between the election cycles of the summers of 1964 and 2020, it’s seeing young people getting out of their comfort zone and com-

It’s happening again.” More information about the Fine Arts Series at The College at Brockport can be found at brockport.edu/academics/fine_arts or on Facebook. Provided information

Annual Boy Scout popcorn and nut fundraiser runs through October 25 The Seneca Waterways Council of the Boy Scouts of America’s annual product sale of popcorn and nuts is underway. In light of the pandemic, additional safety measures for in-person sales have been implemented to ensure the safety of scouts, leaders, families, and customers. An online sales system has also been developed to facilitate a touchless process. The annual sale, which is the Boy Scouts’ major annual fundraiser, runs through October 25. It supports individual unit activities and the council’s ability to deliver the scouting program that helps to develop character, leadership, and life skills to nearly 9,000 youth across five counties (Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates). The sale raises, on average, $1.2 million, with 70 percent directly

benefiting the youth in local scouting programs by helping provide the financial resources necessary to fund their scouting adventures at summer camp and unit activities and outings throughout the entire year. Proceeds help the council keep scouting programs available and affordable for all families. The Camp Masters brand popcorn that the scouts sell offers various products, including buttery, sweet, chocolaty, or cheesy favorites, to satisfy every taste bud. Popping corn and microwave flavors, as well as trail mix, are also available options. Whitley’s nut products were added to the sale in 2019 to expand the variety of items available. Customers can also support the military while supporting scouting. For a $30 or $50 donation, customers can send

Camp Masters popcorn or Whitley’s nuts to U.S. Troops stationed all over the world and give them a taste of home. There are several options for customers to order their popcorn and nut products through the Boy Scouts, including in-person at storefronts or door-to-door, touchless sales process through online order request with scout follow-up at http://www.soldbyscouts.com. Complete online ordering of popcorn is available at http://campmasters.org, and nuts at http://www.whitleysfundraising.com. For local scouts to benefit from online purchases, select Seneca Waterways Council as the council to support. For more information, or to find a Scout Pack or Troop in your neighborhood selling popcorn and nuts, contact the council office at 244-4210. Provided information

Spencerport Rotary Club sees needs in the community

The Spencerport Rotary Club felt the Spencerport Firemen’s Exempt Club had a great need for donations this year given the cancellation of the annual carnival. The $250 donation also served as a “Thank You” for all that the all volunteer fire department and the Exempts Club does for the community. Pictured (l-r) are Rotary President Kosmos Mihalitsas and Chris Damon, Fire Department Vice President, Safety Officer, and Senior Explorer Advisor.

The success of the Spencerport Rotary Club’s annual golf tournament, chaired by Ann and Dave DeMers, allowed the club to also make a donation to Eagle Star Housing. This non-profit organization provides veterans who have become homeless a safe place to live while they regain independence and self-sufficiency. Through support, food security, and education in life skills, Eagle Star Housing is committed to ensuring all veterans have a safe place to sleep at night, while maintaining a long-term goal of assisting each veteran find and secure, permanent, and stable housing.
