The restoration of the mural above Lift Bridge Book Shop was completed on June 29 when Brockport DPW installed new durable panels painted by artist Stacey Kirby. The original mural depicting the lyrics of the well-known canal song, “Low Bridge, Everybody Down,” was painted directly on the brickwork in 2010 and had been worn by time and the elements. The restoration included modern painting and installation techniques to ensure longevity. The project was paid for by an Erie Canalway IMPACT! Grant and private donors. Plans for an official dedication will be announced in the near future. Provided photos.

Veggie and fruit increase boosts nutritional quality for WIC families New York families participating in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will be able to purchase more fruits and vegetables between June 1 and September 30, 2021. The federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) is funding the temporary increase in monthly WIC benefits to help make healthy food options more available to families facing additional challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. More than 300,000 New York women and children now have increased access to additional fruits and vegetables during these four months. The cash value benefit used by WIC participants on their eWIC card to buy vegetables and fruit as part of their WIC food package will increase temporarily to $35 a month for each WIC-eligible woman and child during the four-month period, up from $9 per child and $11 for pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women. The benefit applies to all fruits and vegetables,

fresh, frozen, or canned as well as any brand, variety, size, with no added sugar, syrup, artificial sweeteners, fat or oil. Organic fruits and vegetables are allowed. “Good nutrition is key to mental and physical health, and expanding healthy food choices for WIC participants is one way we can help families be resilient during this very challenging year,” said Helene Rosenhouse-Romeo, Director of WIC and Nutrition, Ryan Health, and WIC Association of NYS Provider. New York WIC is equipped to serve twice as many participants and welcomes everyone who is eligible to apply. New Yorkers can find out if they are eligible for WIC and apply by contacting their local WIC agency or calling 1-800-522-5006. WIC provides nutrition education, breastfeeding education and support, supplemental nutritious foods, and connections to other community services. Learn more at nyswica.org. Provided information

Camping reservations open for the Great New York State Fair Reservations for full-service camping in the Empire RV Park during the Great New York State Fair are now open. Reservations can be made via the Fair’s site at Reserve America. The Empire RV Park is a 303-space campground on the Fairgrounds next to the Midway, which includes water, sewer, and electric service. Campers need to supply their own hookups to those services. The rental price of $830 includes two 18-day admission wristbands and parking for one vehicle. A permit for a second vehicle can be purchased separately. There is a $7.25 fee added to the reservation, which covers 23 days, from Sunday, August 15 to Labor Day, September 6.

Fair Director Troy Waffner said, “People love to camp at the Fair. They’re Fair fans, but they’re also fans of having a good time with other people who enjoy camping. Anyone interested in camping in the Empire RV Park should get a reservation quickly because space always sells out.” Complete information on full-service camping in the Empire RV Park can be found at https://nysfair.ny.gov/your-visit/ plan-your-trip/fair-rv-parking/. Reservations will not be taken after August 6. For those seeking a shorter camping stay, the Fair offers daily camping in the Pink parking lot across from the Fairgrounds. People can purchase daily camping reservations starting July 15. Daily camping does

not include electric, water, or sewer service. Campers may use their own generators, sewage dumping stations are provided, and restrooms with showers are available. The cost is $25.68 per night for a camper and vehicle and does not include admission to the Fair. Thanks to the successful efforts of New Yorkers to battle COVID-19, the Fair will be open with no restrictions on attendance. Safety guidance can change, and prospective fairgoers are advised to follow the Fair’s social media sites, sign up for the Fair’s email newsletter, or closely follow the Fair’s website to get the latest developments.

Founded in 1841, the Great New York State Fair is America’s third-largest state fair. The 2021 Fair runs from August 20 to September 6. For information, visit https:// nysfair.ny.gov/. Provided information
