Brockport mayor appointed to NYCOM Executive Committee Mayor Margaret B. Blackman of the Village of Brockport has been appointed to serve on the Executive Committee of the New York State Conference of Mayors and Municipal Officials (NYCOM). Mayor Richard David of the City of Binghamton, President of NYCOM, made the selection. In announcing the appointment, Mayor David stated, “Mayor Blackman is a proven municipal leader, with a wide range of experience and success. Her collaborative approach to leadership and active advocacy on behalf of local governments will be a tremendous asset to NYCOM as we represent our city and village members.” “NYCOM plays a very important role as the legislative advocate for cities and villages, and also guides elected and appointed officials in our efforts to be effective and innovative,” said Mayor Blackman. “The organization works diligently on our behalf and conscientiously seeks input from its members about the most pressing issues we face. I am honored to be appointed to this position of leadership within NYCOM.” Mayor Blackman has served on the Brockport Village Board of Trustees since 2011. First elected as a trustee, she was

then elected mayor in 2013 and has just begun her third four-year term in that office. As mayor, she prides herself on leading in a collaborative, non-partisan fashion. During her tenure as mayor, she Margaret Blackman guided the establishment of the village court, the town/ gown committee (which she co-chairs), municipal solar for the village, village streetlight buyback from National Grid, and the hiring of a police chief, code enforcement officer, and village manager. Mayor Blackman began her public service as the inaugural Chair of the village’s Tree Board. She was a member of the Anthropology Department faculty at SUNY Brockport for 30 years, and is a graduate of Miami University of Ohio and The Ohio State University. Gardeners need expert observation skills. As the growing season progresses, gardeners should watch their plants closely every day. Disease and insect issues constantly arise, and being able to diagnose common problems yourself as soon as possible can help fight the spread of disease and insect damage and ensure a bountiful harvest. Hawley hosting Patriot Trip to D.C. for local veterans Assemblyman Steve Hawley (139th Assembly District) will be resuming his annual Patriot Trip to Washington, D.C., this year. Taking place from September 16 to 19, veterans and their family members will be hosted on a tour throughout the area to visit several historical sites and landmarks. This year’s tour will feature stops at war memorials throughout the D.C. area including Arlington National Cemetery. The first day includes a stop at the site of the Battle of Gettysburg in Pennsylvania. Previous tours have included stops at the White House, the Capitol Building, Mt. Vernon, the Annapolis Naval Academy, and various museums. Participation in the trip is open to all military veterans and their family members and will cost $475 per person (includes all food, accommodation, travel, and other expenses). Those interested in participating in this year’s trip are encouraged to reach out to Assemblyman Hawley’s district office at 589-5780. “The Patriot Trip has been an important way of giving back to our veterans for years now, so after having to cancel last year’s trip, I’m elated to be able to resume the trips this year,” said Hawley. “This year will be our 14th trip, so I encourage all interested veterans to reach out to my office and join us on a trip to remember!” Provided information

Volunteers sought to appear in Erie Canalway promotional materials Call of the Loon Productions is returning to Spencerport the morning of Friday, July 16, to film and photograph some shots to promote the Erie Canal on behalf of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. They are looking for volunteers to appear in the videos and photos. Their goal is to showcase the diverse landscapes found within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor and encapsulate the variety of recreational and cultural experiences the corridor has to offer people of all backgrounds and accessibility needs. Sweden/Clarkson Community Center offers up favorite summer programming Seniors can imagine themselves at the beach when they pick up a beach ball and serve up a game of chair volleyball this summer. The Sweden/Clarkson Community Center has pick-up games on Tuesdays from 1 to 2 p.m. Cost is $1 to drop in and play a little volleyball. A long-time favorite youth program is back. Opinion After one of the latest shootings in a Rochester Walmart parking lot by an 18-year-old, the question was asked, “At what point in a child’s life do they learn to kill?” Let’s think about this. Could one reason (among many) be that adults, for profit, produce youth entertainment filled with violence, murders, killings, death? The legalized killing of our most innocent babies in the womb also does not teach them to value life. Our nation has become desensitized and we have lost respect for the sanctity of human life, because too often people’s actions reflect what they take into their minds and hearts. We are created in the image of God, and Jesus commands us “to love Him with our whole heart and love one another.” (Matt. 22:32-40) Just as we came together to remember the sacrifice of lives for us Independence Day, July 4, 1776, let us come back to remembering our Dependence on God and His life giving sacrifice for us, holding firm to our Founding Biblical Principles and this Declaration Truth: “That all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.” There is Hope, it is us, we the people, living God’s Promise in II Chronicles 7:14. Let us stand strong in Faith together, each doing what we can, and then we will see the change we so desperately need in our nation and world. “America! America! God shed His grace on Thee, And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!”

Monroe County and BOCES 2 CWD celebrate graduation of CDL Training Class On June 29, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello and representatives from the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Center for Workforce Development (CWD) recognized the graduation of its newest Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Training Class. Eight graduates completed the course and, after taking a road test in July, will fill a crucial workforce need. “The availability of workers with Commercial Driver’s Licenses is important for the ecosystem of the Monroe County economy,” said Bello. “I want to congratulate the graduates for taking the initiative to complete the training class as it not only helps our region as a whole, but it diversifies their talents as individual workers. I hope to see even higher enrollment numbers for the class this fall!” Graduates received their certificates at the Gates Chili Central School District Transportation Building. Gates Chili provided a school bus to be used for hands-on driving experience as part of the class, and hosted the graduates for an in-person tour at their transportation facility. The class represents an innovative workforce development partnership to address a shortage of drivers in our region. Through funding provided by the Monroe County Industrial Development Corporation (MCIDC), up to 80 percent of the program

costs were covered for participants. The class, which began in April, is the third CDL class offered through this partnership. Altogether, the program has an 86 percent employment placement rate in the industry. “We at the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES are pleased to have facilitated this exciting opportunity for our students,” said Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES District Superintendent Jo Anne Antonacci. “These graduates will fill vital job openings, opening up new doors while also meeting a huge need in our community. We are proud to be a positive force in driving economic development in this region, and we thank Monroe County for their continued partnership.” Another CDL training class will begin in September. There is still an urgent need for drivers in the field, especially in local and regional driving employers such as bus drivers, medical transport drivers, and delivery service drivers. Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic in Rochester July 15 through 18 The 12th stop on the 2021 “Road to the LPGA” brings the Symetra Tour to Brook Lea Country for the sixth annual Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic from July 15 through 18. “The Rochester community has been a friend and supporter of the LPGA family for over 40 years, so it is a privilege to bring the Symetra Tour to a place that truly appreciates women’s professional golf,” said Mike Nichols, Chief Business Officer of LPGA Qualifying Tours. “Brook Lea Country Club has provided an outstanding test for our athletes and has crowned some accomplished champions – including the tournament’s most recent winner Patty Tavatanakit who secured the LPGA Tour’s first major of 2021 and will be representing her country in the Tokyo Olympics.” Greeting the 144-player field in Rochester is a total purse of $175,000. Individuals are set to compete in a 72-hole stroke play format with a cut to the low 60 players and ties after 36 holes. In addition to winning the ANA Inspiration, the UCLA alumna has claimed four more top-five finishes. “I had such a great time playing in the Danielle Downey Credit Union Classic on the Symetra Tour, and I’m excited to see it play out this year. It’s still one of the most memorable wins of my entire career,” said Tavatanakit. “Mike Vadala has done such a great job with that event, and he and his team took such great care of me in Rochester. It was sincerely one of my favorite events of the year, and I’m excited to see how all the talented players play there in 2021.” Action gets underway at 7:30 a.m. all four days, with play starting off No. 1 and No. 10 tees in the first and second round. Meanwhile, all groups will head off No. 1 tee for both the third and final rounds with a trophy presentation to follow on No. 18 green. The tournament was inspired by and is a tribute to the late Danielle Downey. The Spencerport native was an accomplished golfer at Spencerport High School and went on to be an ALL-SEC performer at Auburn University. After turning professional, she spent time on both the Futures tour (now the LPGA-owned Symetra Tour) and the LPGA, achieving a great deal of success and living her dream. Governor Cuomo announces comprehensive strategy to combat gun violence On July 6, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo declared the firstin-the-nation gun violence disaster emergency as part of a new, comprehensive strategy to build a safer New York. This new strategy treats gun violence as a public health crisis, using short-term solutions to manage the immediate gun violence crisis and reduce the shooting rate, as well as longterm solutions that focus on community-based intervention and prevention strategies to break the cycle of violence. The disaster emergency allows the state to expedite money and resources to communities so they can begin targeting gun violence immediately. To coordinate this gun violence prevention effort, the governor announced the creation of the Office of Gun Violence Prevention. The governor also required by Executive Order major police departments to share incident-level data on gun violence with the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services to compile this data weekly. This data will be used by the new Office of Gun Violence Prevention to track emerging gun violence hotspots and deploy resources to those areas that need it most. This comprehensive strategy also includes a $138.7 million investment in intervention and prevention programs, including programs that engage at-risk youth in summer job opportunities and community activity programs to get young people off the streets, and supports ongoing gun vio-

lence prevention programs. The governor also announced the creation of a new State Police Gun Trafficking Interdiction Unit to stop the flood of illegal guns that come into New York from states with weak gun safety laws. Additionally, the state will continue to strengthen police-community relations through a partnership with John Jay College of Criminal Justice to help localities implement and assess the reform plans they developed through the New York State Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative. “We’re building New York back better than ever before, but part of rebuilding is addressing the systemic injustices that were exposed by COVID. If you look at the recent numbers, more people are now dying from gun violence and crime than COVID – this is a national problem but someone has to step up and address this problem because our future depends on it,” Governor Cuomo said. “Just like we did with COVID, New York is going to lead the nation once again with a comprehensive approach to combating and preventing gun violence, and our first step is acknowledging the problem with a first-in-the-nation disaster emergency on gun violence. When we see an injustice we don’t look the other way, we stand up and fight it because that’s the New York way.” Assemblyman Josh Jensen (134th District) says the announcement shows the failure of New York’s priorities.

“Gun violence is out of control, in our community and across our state, and while ending the violence on our streets and in our neighborhoods should be the number one priority of every elected leader, allowing the governor to once again have unilateral control to address a crisis is not the answer,” Jensen said. “We must address the violence happening on our streets, empower law enforcement, protect and defend law-abiding citizens, pursue criminals, and keep them off the streets. What we should not be doing is giving more executive powers and a blank check to solve this crisis.” Assemblyman Steve Hawley (139th District) says that bail reform is the real problem. “This emergency declaration is yet another instance of the governor going above our heads in the Legislature to haphazardly expend funds aimed to try and solve the wrong root problem,” said Hawley. “The reason for the rise in crime as of late is no mystery, and until the governor admits bail reform was a failed experiment with deadly consequences, I fear the terrible violence in our communities will persist. Our constitutional freedom to own guns isn’t the problem that’s causing this violence, it’s the dangerous revolving-door the governor has created in our penal system that’s giving dangerous individuals more opportunities than ever to harm the innocent, or victims of their previous crimes.” Provided information

Rod enjoyed riding with the Christian Motorcyclists Association. He volunteered his talents of singing and playing his keyboard at nursing homes. Geraldine Bell O’Brien Pratt Leverenz Geraldine died in Debary, Florida, 3 July 2021. Gerry was born on the O’Brien farm on Lake Road, Clarkson to James C. O’Brien and Winnie D. Hoy O’Brien 11 December 1924, one of 15 children. Gerry raised a herd of boys, Harry (Ann) Pratt, Texas, Douglas (Susan) Pratt, Florida, Timothy (Shin) Pratt, Texas, Steve (deceased) (Connie) Pratt, Clarkson, Jeffrey (Barb) Pratt, and Gregory S. Pratt. She married Harry L. Pratt on 27 March 1942 and he went into the service, She followed in 1943 and had her second child in Mississippi. They returned to New York and she bore two more boys in Warsaw, New York. In 1951 they moved back to Brockport, bought a couple acres of land from her father and proceeded to build a house at 751 Gilmore Road and had another son. After her eldest went into the service she had her youngest in 1961. Her husband died in 1977. Four of her sons served in Viet Nam, three of them at the same time on the same base. Gerry remarried Raymond Leverenz in 1985. He died in 2002. They had bought a house in Florida and would spend summers in New York and winters in Florida. Gerry left behind 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren; one sister Jacqueline Rowling of Waterport; many nieces and nephews all over. She is survived by her children, Kathleen (Spencer) Begemann, Karen Leidig and Lawrence Bauch; and her beloved grandsons, Anthony Begemann, Daniel Fitton (Courtney) Fitton and Adam Leidig; much loved nieces, Elaine (Rusty), Marilyn (Tim); and nephew, Neil (Andy). Eleanor graduated from Kendall High School. She received her certification from the Simmons Beauty School in June of 1952 and began her career as a Hairdresser. Eleanor married Everett Bauch on September 20, 1952. She strongly believed in education, going back to college after raising her children. At the age of 43, Eleanor earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY Brockport with nearly a 4.0 GPA. Eleanor was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a life-long member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hamlin. Services were held privately at Lakeview Cemetery in Brockport on July 1. Comments Poppy program proceeds support many veterans For a century, around Memorial Day and, more recently, also Veterans Day, the Legion Family has distributed poppies. Generations of Americans grew up both supporting this program and knowing its history. But, times change, and recently we began to notice fewer people who knew “The Poppy Story,” but nevertheless generously made donations. In 2020, during the pandemic, Harvey C. Noone Legion Auxiliary Unit #954 began reintroducing younger generations of Americans to this program by sharing what the poppy represents and why it remains a relevant and important tradition today. The spring after WWI ended, poppies spontaneously emerged blooming on the battlefields of France. Immediately, these humble flowers became a worldwide symbol to honor and remember those who died fighting for freedom and democracy. In 1921 the Legion Auxiliary began the tradition of distributing poppies as a fundraiser and symbol of remembrance - thus accomplishing two equally important goals. First, distributing poppies keeps the memory of our fallen heroes alive, ensuring that their sacrifices were not in vain. Second, it generates funds, 100 percent of which are used throughout the year to support veterans. Over the last year, we told “The Poppy Story” in the media, on our website and Facebook page, along with sponsoring a Poppy Coloring Contest and a Poppy Category in the Legion Family’s 4th of July Decorating Contest. Donations in 2021 reached a record high. Through the generosity of the community, we have recently made sizeable donations to the Batavia VA, Eagle Star Veteran’s Transition Home in Spencerport, the Monroe County Legion Auxiliary Emergency Fund, and the Patriot Guard Emergency Fund. by T.R. Hendrick They say you only get one great dog in your lifetime, and in my case, that is true. I’ve owned over a dozen hunting dogs in my life, and none could hold a dog biscuit to my ol’ yellow Lab, Cove. He is our once-in-a-lifetime dog, named after my cardiologist, Doctor Christopher Cove, who, along with some amazing EMTs, saved my life one hot July 4th. It was 12 years ago that the doctor placed a stent in my left anterior descending artery after I’d gone into full cardiac arrest while washing my truck on a rare 4th at home. It only took five minutes for the Henrietta Ambulance EMTs to arrive. One week earlier, I had been fishing in the Thousand Islands. Had it hit me then, I would have ended up deader than a bloated skunk on the side of 490. There is no doubt in my mind my fishing buddies would have waited until the bass stopped biting before taking me to shore and then emptying my tackle box of all my good lures before calling 911. My sister Betsy drove to Wildrose Kennels in Mississippi to pick up Cove only a few weeks after my “widow maker.” For some reason, my wife would not let me leave home to make the 14-hour drive. Cove showed up at our doorstep at eight weeks of age, full of curiosity and zero fear. He was cuter than a baby panda sneezing, as only a yellow Lab pup can be. From that minute on, Cove and I have been closer than two coats of paint. He is co-founder of my business T&C Goose Wrangler (the C standing for Cove, of course), where we worked together for ten years chasing geese off golf courses and school sports fields before dysplasia of both front elbows kept him from climbing in and out of the backseat of my truck. Against his wishes, he had to retire. Cove’s love of chasing geese was almost too strong as, on one occasion, he swam out of sight on Chaumont Bay chasing a wounded goose. My son Joel and I had been goose hunting on the bay and shot a goose that appeared lifeless, floating on the water. When Cove swam up to the goose, his head popped up, and he started swimming away with Cove so close that we could not make a safe finishing shot. We yelled and shot the guns in the air, hoping to turn Cove around, but he was just too close to that bird to care about anything else but catching that goose. All we had was a canoe, and by the time Joel dragged it out of the cattails where we had hidden it, Cove was already out of sight.

Cove in his younger days. Provided photo. You talk about panic; it was as if one of my grandkids was swimming out of sight. It was by a minor miracle that I had some friends up there fishing, and I was able to call them. They responded quickly and soon found Cove swimming out in the middle of the large bay, the goose nowhere to be seen. They hoisted him into the boat and brought him back. He was no worse for wear, but I was a nervous wreck. I’m sure he would not have drowned - dogs rarely do, especially Labs - but where he would have made it to shore is anybody’s guess. On our many long drives to Saskatchewan on hunting trips, my buddies riding with me would often ask, “Is Cove still alive back there?” as he lay in the backseat, not making a peep for hours. That was until the guns came out, then he knew it was game time! He is by far the smartest dog I have ever owned, needing little training to do what he did naturally. I could count on two hands how many times I have had to raise my voice at my ol’ buddy, and after I did, I always felt worse for it. I could go on for hours talking about the hundreds of great waterfowl retrieves he has made over the years, some of his best in Lake Ontario in four-foot waves in late November. Cove is now twelve years old and shuffles around like the old gentleman he is. His front elbows are in such bad shape that even a visit to Cornell University couldn’t help. Still, you never hear a groan out of him. His stoic nature is constantly commented on by the various veterinarians who have analyzed him over the years. Although getting around is now a struggle, his eyes are clear, and his appetite is still as ferocious as a grizzly. When the grandkids are here and eating anything, he shadows their every step, knowing something tasty will drop at any minute. Because of his rusty joints, he plops down in the worst spots possible such as the middle of the kitchen or dining room, creating this large yellow fur-shedding roadblock. We all step around him or, in the case of the grandkids, literally crawl right over him, knowing it would take him five minutes to get to his feet and move. He just wags his tail, glad that his family is so close. As much as I hate to think about it, I know his days are numbered. I wanted to write this now while Cove is still with us for a couple of reasons. The first one being that I know once he goes, I will be emotionally unable to even spell his name for a long time. The second is to let him know while he’s here how much we love him and to thank him for bringing his unconditional love into our lives, and I believe possibly saving mine. I hope when Cove reads this online or possibly in print over his morning scoop of Blue Buffalo, he will know how much we love the one-and-only greatest dog of our lives. Have I mentioned how smart he is?

Byron-Bergen names new district administrators Byron-Bergen Central School District has appointed Betsy Brown as the new Director of Instructional Services and Ashley John Grillo as the Jr./Sr. High School Principal. Brown was most recently the Assistant Jr./Sr. High School Principal and was previously the Elementary School Assistant Principal. Grillo was Principal of Batavia Middle School. Both appointments took effect July 1, 2021. Brown came to ByronBergen from Avon Central Schools, where she supported students and staff as a literacy coach for three years. Prior to that, she taught in 3rd, 4th, and kindergarten classrooms. Brown holds a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and a Master of Education degree in literacy, earned at the State University of NY at Geneseo. Her administrative coursework was completed at the University Betsy Brown of Rochester.
