Newman Riga Library celebrates 100 years of community service by Kari Cameron On September 18, the Newman Riga Library, located in Churchville, kicked off its centennial year with a well-attended community celebration. The day was a true celebration of the li brary, with food, music, games, a book sale, and speeches by local dignitaries and public speaking contest winners Josh Bennett and Natalie McNatalie McCaffery C a f f e r y. L o c a l officials in attendance included County Legislator Steve Brew, New York State Assemblyman Stephen Hawley, Monroe County Library System Director Patty

Uttaro, Town of Riga Supervisor Brad O’Brocta, and Churchville Deputy Mayor Diane Pusateri. A Brief History The Newman Riga Library has a long and storied history. Records show that the Town of Riga had a library as early as 1813, not too long after the area was settled by Samuel Church in 1806. In 1874, village residents formed a Library Association, and in 1875, the library purchased 200 books. To attend the library, residents paid for season tickets, which granted them access to the library for a year. In 1920, residents of the village organized to form the Riga Free Library Association, establishing a village library that would be free to the public. Granted a Charter by the New York State Board of Regents on September 22, 1921, the Town of Riga’s library, the Riga Free Library, began. Originally located over the former Brown’s Hardware Store, the library moved in 1948 to the Village Hall. In 1951, the Village of Churchville granted access to a portion of parkland seated at the corner of Buffalo and Main Streets, entering a 99-year lease with the library. Construction on the Riga Free Library building was completed in 1952, overseen by architect Carl Ade and builder Burton Sage. This was possible with a donation of $40,000 by philanthropist and former Churchville resident Floyd R. Newman. In 1988, Mr. Newman donated $50,000 and

The Library Today Today, under the direction of Library Director Lynn Brown, the Newman Riga Library is a hub in the community with ties to its past. Sandra Wilson and Letitia Juergens are the daughter and granddaughter of builder Burton Sage, respectively. Both serve on the Newman Riga Library’s Board of Trustees, along with seven other dedicated community members. To continue the year-long centennial celebration, the library is hosting additional events over the upcoming months, including book talks with local authors.

On Tuesday, October 19, at 6 p.m., local authors Gary Craig and Deanne Quinn Miller will be at the library to discuss their latest publication, The Prison Guard’s Daughter, a book about the Attica prison uprising. The “Who Really Killed John F. Kennedy” program returns on Tuesday, November 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. In January, local author Melissa Ostrom will visit to talk about her works (The Beloved Wild and Unleaving). All are welcome to attend. To learn more or register, contact the library at 293-2009. Nestled on the corner of Buffalo Street and Main Street in the village of Churchville, the library is a steadfast reminder of the importance of books and knowledge. It remains as important to the community today as it has for the past 100 years.

Steve Brew (left) of Brew School of Music and the Senior Strummers led by Rich Towsley provided musical entertainment for the celebration. Provided photos.

September busy for Sweden building department The Town of Sweden issued 21 permits of various kinds in the month of September. Two were for new homes on Wood Trace. Other permits included three sheds, three barns or barn remodels, two decks, one sign, two fill permits, one roof-mounted solar panel, one gas fireplace, four operating permits, and two commercial remodels. This is the time of year that the Sweden building department likes to remind residents to check their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors’ batteries and have gas and wood burning furnaces inspected and cleaned. When using a fireplace or woodstove, protective glass doors and/or screens should be in place to prevent sparks and embers from igniting nearby furniture or carpeting.

Flues and dampers should be in the open position in order to allow for proper ventilation. A fire extinguisher nearby is a must. Homeowners should not place embers in plastic garbage containers or paper bags or place the ashes in a container against any structure. “We have had a few tragic residential fires in our community over the past two years,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson. “Our building department is available to help residents understand fire safety regulations and our Brockport Fire Department is also a wonderful fire safety educational resource.” Provided information

Live theatre returns to Churchville-Chili with Puffs Churchville-Chili Senior High School’s fall play is Puffs, or: Seven increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic. It is a tale for anyone who has never been destined to save the world. For seven years, a certain boy wizard went to a certain Wizard School and conquered evil. This, however, is not his story. This is the story of the Puffs, who just happened to be there too. This play gives the audience a new look at a familiar adventure from the perspective of three potential heroes just trying to make it through a magic school that proves to be very dangerous for children. Alongside them are the Puffs, a group of well-meaning, loyal outsiders with a thing for badgers. Their hilariously heartfelt and epic journey takes the classic story to new places and reimagines what a wizard hero can be.

Do you remember the Island of Misfit, broken, ugly Toys, from Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer?

Do you feel like a Misfit? Did you ever feel like your circumstances are too big or that you blew it so bad that God could never forgive you? Paul wrote in the Bible, “But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong” that describes our new church! Ya know, our Heroes in the Bible were also failed Misfits! Isaac was a daydreamer, Jacob was a cheater, Peter had a temper, Noah got drunk, Jonah ran from God, Thomas was a doubter, John the Baptist ate bugs and Moses stuttered. On that Misfit Island was Charlie in the Box, a Spotted Elephant, Train with square wheels, a Boat that can’t float and more. They had all been rescued by King Moonracer who is the ruler of the Island of Misfit Toys, He is a lion just as Jesus is portrayed in the Bible. He circles the Earth every night to find unloved toys in need of help. On this Island everyone is accepted & loved. They are never asked for money. Our church has been called the most “Misfit” different simple church in Hamlin. However we teach the Bible, Pray, Worship and Love each other. We would love any of you Misfits to join us. Jesus our God is there!

Social Security introduces redesigned statement for ease of use Kilolo Kijakazi, Acting Commissioner of Social Security, has introduced a new look and feel to the Social Security Statement, available online through the my Social Security portal at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount and by mail. The Statement is one of the most effective tools people can use to learn about their earnings and future Social Security benefits. This fresh look will allow millions of people to see their earnings information and estimates of future benefits quickly and securely. “One of my top priorities is to provide information to people in clear and plain terms about Social Security’s programs and services,” said Acting Commissioner Kijakazi. “The streamlined Social Security Statement contains clear messaging and makes it easier to find information at a glance, helping to simplify our complex programs for the public.” The agency conducted extensive research, review, and testing to make the updated Statement easy to understand.

The new Statement is shorter, uses visuals and plain language, and includes fact sheets tailored to a person’s age and earnings history. It also includes important information people have come to expect from the Statement, such as how much a worker and family members could expect to receive in Social Security benefits and a personalized earnings history, in a clear, concise manner. Examples of the new Statement and fact sheets are available at www. socialsecurity.gov/myaccount/statement.html. More than 61 million people have already created my Social Security accounts. U.S. citizens age 18 or older can easily view their redesigned Social Security Statement online by creating a my Social Security account. People age 60 or older who do not receive benefits and do not have a my Social Security account will receive their Statement by mail three months before their birthday. Workers should check their Statement at least once a year for accuracy. People can check information and conduct most So-

cial Security business through their personal my Social Security account. If they already receive Social Security benefits, they can start or change direct deposit online, request a replacement SSA-1099, and if they need proof of their benefits, they can print or download a current Benefit Verification Letter from their account. In addition to obtaining their personalized Social Security Statement, people not yet receiving benefits can use their account to request a replacement Social Security card online if they meet certain requirements. The portal also includes a retirement calculator and links to information about other online services, such as applications for retirement, disability, and Medicare benefits. Many Social Security services are also available by dialing toll-free, 1 800 772 1213. People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call Social Security’s TTY number, 1 800 325 0778. Learn the sounds of fire safety •Know the difference between the sounds of your alarms. Smoke alarms: three beeps. Carbon monoxide alarms: four beeps. •When a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm sounds, respond immediately by first exiting your home, calling 911, and staying out of your home. •Test your smoke alarms monthly by holding down the test button. •If your smoke alarm begins to chirp, typically a single chirp every 30 or 60 seconds, it means that the batteries are low and should be replaced. If your smoke alarm continues chirping after batteries are replaced, it means the alarm is at the end of its life, and the unit must be replaced. •Regularly replace your alarm’s batteries once a year. If your smoke alarm is more than ten years old, it is time to replace the alarm. •Since 2019, NY State law requires all new or replacement smoke alarms to be powered by a ten-year, sealed, non-removable battery or hardwired to the home. Ten-year fire alarms still need to be tested monthly and replaced every ten years. They will chirp when the battery is low •Make sure your smoke and CO alarms meet the needs of all your family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities. If there is someone in your household who is deaf or hard of hearing, install a bed shaker and strobe light alarms that will alert that person to fire. • Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home for the best protection. When one sounds, they all sound. Make sure you can hear the sound of the smoke alarm. For more information on smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and other information on fire safety and prevention, visit www.fasny.com and www.nfpa.org. Provided information

Do you know what a continuous set of three loud beeps from your fire alarm means? How about four? Knowing the difference between these sounds can save you, your home, and your family. Instead of taking immediate action in an emergency situation, many people waste time trying to figure out what the sounds mean instead of calling for help. Time is a valuable asset during a crisis and can mean the difference between life and death. “Our lives and our homes are filled with technologies that use all kinds of sounds to help us. Sometimes all the beeps and chirps can just become white noise,” said John Farrell, President of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York. “The sounds of our smoke and carbon monoxide alarms can help save lives or warn us when our lifesaving devices are starting to reach the end of their useful life. It is important that all New Yorkers know the ‘Sounds of Fire Safety’ and make the proper response when they hear them.” Many residents remove the batteries from their alarms when they begin to chirp and end up forgetting to replace them. Others may think the sounds are a result of a defect. Unfortunately, by not investigating the situation further, it could present serious risks in the case of a fire or emergency situation. According to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), three out of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms or in homes lacking smoke detectors. And a quarter of all smoke alarm failures are caused by dead batteries. Working smoke alarms save lives by cutting the risk of dying in a home fire in half. Smoke alarms should be installed and maintained in every dwelling. Smoke Alarm Safety Tips from NFPA:

“At every step of this process (from my initial service call, through sales, to final goodbyes to the team that installed our new AC units) I was impressed with the genuine helpfulness, good humor, and professionalism of this business’s employees. What a great group of people!” - Mark D. “Called two other companies before them, not one wanted to help. Not AIRESERV, they came out, gave me same-day estimate, install day within a few weeks, and one-day install. Everything 100x faster than the other companies. The team that came out was A+. Asked questions to ensure I was happy with everything the whole time. Respected my property and animals; made sure gates and doors were closed. Cleaned up everything afterwards. Walked me through both systems so I understood everything. Just really happy I found a company that respect their customers. The front office taking calls, Tucker with the estimate, and the install crew... everyone was above and beyond in customer satisfaction. Hard to find companies still like this today.” - Michael C. “AireServ replaced my aging furnace and air conditioning system, the technicians were clean, knowledgeable, precise. System installation went smooth and successful. The installation is clean and neat, show worthy.” - Larry S.

Over $13K raised for Camp Good Days during electronics recycling fundraiser On September 16, Brockport-based electronics recycler Sunnking presented a $13,357 check to Camp Good Days and Special Times, a local non-profit organization helping children and families dealing with cancer. The funds were raised as a part of Sunnking’s 11th annual e-Scrap for Camp fundraiser. The company saw 353 area businesses participate in the electronics recycling donation drive. “Our community stepped up in a big way,” said Adam Shine, Vice President of Sunnking. “With what these kids and families continue to deal with, it’s hugely important that we keep doing our part to provide them program access, and something as simple as recycling electronics is all it takes.” Sunnking works with local businesses to recycle unwanted electronics through the donation drive, generating funds for future programs at Camp Good Days and Special Times. The e-Scrap for Camp program has gifted a total of $128,106 to provide access to the year-round activities for Western New York children.

“We are overjoyed and in awe of the amount Sunnking continues to donate to our organization,” said Lisa Booz, WNY Regional Director of Camp Good Days & Special Times. “In a time when most of the world stopped, Camp Good Days pushed on through, providing programming to families facing cancer without pause. Accomplishing this feat without Sunnking’s e-Scrap for Camp program would not have been possible.” Buffalo and Rochester-area businesses provided a total of 445,256 pounds of recyclable devices towards the 2021 donation, a six percent (or $1,600 gift) increase from the year prior. Since the e-scrap program’s existence, Sunnking has rescued more than 5.5 million pounds of recyclable material from area landfills. “We are so fortunate to be able to count on this program’s existence and the community’s response to it,” said Booz. Sunnking will launch registration for the 2022 fundraising campaign later this year. Provided information

Distinguished Past President of the Spencerport Kiwanis Club, Chuck Colby (right), was honored with membership in the Hixson Fellowship at a recent meeting of the Spencerport Kiwanis Club. The Hixson Fellowship is named for George F. Hixson, Kiwanis International’s first president, who was a member of the Rochester Kiwanis Club. Hixson Fellowships are a way of recognizing people who have contributed significantly to Kiwanis’ history of generosity. Making the presentation was Keith Ryan, who was the first president of the Spencerport Kiwanis Club when it was formed on September 30, 1981. Chuck Colby’s involvement with the Kiwanis Club also began on that September date. He oversaw the biggest project ever undertaken by the club - building a playground in Pineway Ponds Park, a project with a total cost of over $50,000 in value for materials and labor, much of which was donated. He also came up with a new fundraising idea for the club this year to replace two of the fundraisers lost due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The first Car Rally/Scavenger Hunt was held in June and raised more than $5,000 to help the club better serve the Spencerport community. Provided information and photo

Spencerport resident publishes book on the 1972 Drug Abuse Office and Treatment Act John Adriance of Spencerport, and his son Patrick Adriance, illustrator, recently published the book Nixon, Congress, and the Drug Abuse Office and Treatment Act of 1972. The book covers each segment of the enactment of the law, from its introduction into Congress to its eventual passage. Successive chapters illustrate and document the initiative taken by President Nixon, the Senate’s response, the reaction of the House, and the House-Senate Conference that was held to reconcile the different versions of the bill. The

book concludes with an epilogue that summarizes the making of the law and then proceeds to look at the first six years of the law under the Nixon and Ford Administrations. Nixon, Congress, and the Drug Abuse Office and Treatment Act of 1972 provides the reader with a better sense of appreciation of the legislative process. It documents the historic establishment of the Special Action Office for Drug Abuse Prevention in Nixon’s executive office and Congressional reaction to Nixon’s executive order. Congress disagreed with Nixon’s initiative and sought to control drug abuse prevention by establishing an institute in the existing bureaucracy. The National Institute on Drug Abuse would be charged with managing drug abuse prevention for the future. John Adriance is a retired social studies teacher who resides in Spencerport. Patrick Adriance, a 1994 Spencerport High School graduate, is a special education teacher and artist who lives in Lowville, New York. This is the second book that they have published. Their books can be ordered from Lift Bridge Book Shop. Provided information

GCC alum Samara Brown appears on NBC’s The Voice “I pick John,” she said with a huge smile as she pointed to artist John Legend on the September 27 episode of NBC’s The Voice. In August, 32-year-old Samara Brown posted to social media, “I auditioned for The Voice!” Since then, the staff and faculty at Genesee Community College in Batavia have been on the edge of their seats, waiting to see her performance, which is now available online. Her audition left judges John Legend and Ariana Grande fighting over who would get to be her coach this season. Samara Brown from Bronx, New York, earned a Theatre Arts degree from Genesee Community College (GCC) in 2009. One of the first times western New Yorkers got to see Brown perform on stage was as Patient #2 in a production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest in October of 2007. Then, as a freshman, Brown found her home in GCC’s Stuart Steiner Theatre. Flying onto the scene in April of 2008, literally from the ceiling, as Peter Pan in the college’s performance of Peter Pan-The Musical. Her performances continued. As the Village Doctor, Brown played a leading role in bringing the children’s fable, The Incredible Jungle Journey of Fenda Maria to life in March of 2009. From entertaining children to making audiences of all ages laugh in her role in the farce, Noises Off, later that year Brown demonstrated the depths of her singing and acting talents.

Then in November of 2009, Brown played Lady in Blue in the Forum Players performance of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide / When the Rainbow is Enuf, by Ntozake Shange, one of the featured shows at the Theater Association of New York State Festival (TANYS). The performance was awarded “Excellence in Acting to the Ladies of Color for their Ensemble Work” and received the highest honor, “Best Long Play of 2009,” a great a c h i e v e m e n t f o r Samara Brown Genesee’s Theatre Arts program. “In my career specifically, you need two things; technique and talent; I think the technique is definitely what GCC gave me,” said Brown in GCC’s Alumni Spotlight Story. “Samara’s talent was compounded by her drive and her passion performing. She worked hard at rehearsals, she took apart each role she played and fully embraced the character,” said GCC’s Maryanne Arena, Director of the Fine and Performing Arts, who directed Brown in numerous shows and one-act performances as well as cabarets. “Samara is a star whether she is on or off the stage.” GCC’s award-winning Theatre Arts program is designed to expose students to the richness of the performing arts and to provide a solid academic foundation for further study and career opportunities in theatre. Graduates typically transfer to a baccalaureate institution as juniors to continue their educations. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact GCC’s Career Center for more information. OFC Creations will present an encore weekend of Bare: A Pop Opera from October 15 through 17 at the OFC Creations Theatre Center, 3450 Winton Place. The show was previously performed in September and now will be remounted. Bare: A Pop Opera is about a group of high school seniors at a Catholic boarding school facing issues of sexuality and personal identity. As the students struggle to come to terms with who they are and who the world thinks they should be, they seek answers from their church, their friends, and ultimately, from within themselves. The show will feature post-show talkbacks where cast members and community members will reflect on themes in the show as well as the tragic ending. Audience members will have the opportunity to participate and ask questions to the on-stage panel after each performance. Performances are Friday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, October 16, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, October 17, at 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at www. OFCCreations.com or by calling 585-667-0954. Provided information

DCP warns of risks of fake COVID-19 vaccination cards The New York State Division of Consumer Protection (DCP) is warning New Yorkers about the risks of using or buying fake COVID-19 vaccination cards. As more and more places are requiring proof of vaccination, scammers are taking advantage of this opportunity by selling fake verification tools, including fake cards, certificates, test results, or even doctors’ notes. New Yorkers should be aware that buying fake vaccine cards, making their own, or filling the blanks with false information is illegal. The vaccines have repeatedly been proven to be safe. Opting for a fake vaccination card instead of getting vaccinated is an unnecessary health – and legal – risk. State Police Superintendent Kevin P. Bruen said, “Making or possessing fake COVID-19 vaccination cards are serious crimes. We are taking this issue very seriously due to the tremendous risk presented by these false documents. Anyone found to be involved with forged vaccine cards will be charged and face the legal consequences.” The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has received several complaints from people reporting cases of possible

Peace Corps Prep launching at RIT The Peace Corps recently announced the launch of Peace Corps Prep, an undergraduate certificate program, at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). The Peace Corps Prep program will launch on January 1. The program will combine targeted coursework with hands-on experience, building the competencies needed for students to be Peace Corps volunteers or other intercultural fieldworkers. Rochester Institute of Technology is one of eleven new university partnerships. “Today’s students understand the immense challenges of our era and are energetic advocates for change,” Peace Corps Acting Director Carol Spahn said. “Through the Peace Corps Prep program at Rochester Institute of Technology, students can develop the transferable skills necessary to influence change, advance global equity, and be an effective Peace Corps volunteer.” Peace Corps Prep will be structured as an interdisciplinary certificate program housed in the School of Individualized Studies. “Peace Corps Prep is an opportunity for undergraduate students to develop competencies that will fortify their aspirations to serve abroad,” said La’Teashia Sykes, Peace Corps Director of University Programs. “RIT is honored to be designated as a Peace Corps Prep University. RIT has always been a community that is looking to do ‘good’ in the world, whether it is faculty and staff who served in the Peace Corps and other service organizations or RIT students who are eager to take their skills and education and apply it to local and global challenges. Offering our students the opportunity to engage in this program is consistent with our institutional mission and our students’ aspirations, said Dr. Ellen Granberg, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Peace Corps works with more than 150 partner institutions nationwide to deliver programming that underscores a commitment to global citizenship, intercultural competencies, and a sense of service among students. Despite the global evacuation of all Peace Corps volunteers in March 2020 due to COVID-19, more than 700 undergraduate students completed the Peace Corps Prep program in the 2020-2021 academic year. Interested students can find additional information about the Peace Corps Prep program at Rochester Institute of Technology by contacting Meg Walbaum, Director of Strategic Partnerships, Academic Advising, and Student Services, School of Individualized Study at mswcms@rit.edu. fraud related to COVID-19 vaccination. For instance, a consumer reported receiving counterfeit CDC vaccination cards in a vaccine card holder ordered online. The order included blank cards that anyone could forge to mimic authentic CDC vaccination cards. The FTC also received complaints of websites offering, for a fee, vaccine waivers and medical exemptions without seeing a doctor. The FTC is investigating these and other cases of possible vaccine fraud. To avoid a run-in with the law or being a victim of a crime, the Division of Consumer Protection warns: •Presenting fraudulent COVID-19 vaccination cards or test results can land you in jail. Buying or making fake vaccine cards or filling in blank cards with false information is illegal and could lead to fines or even land you in jail. •The only legitimate way to get proof of vaccination – or a negative test result – is to get vaccinated or to test negative. If you lose that proof, check with the state health department or your vaccine provider to find out how to obtain a replacement.

•Protect your personal information from COVID-19 scams. Scammers set up fraudulent websites offering fake vaccine appointments or call people claiming to be COVID-19 surveyors to collect people’s personal information. Never give out personal information over the phone, especially if you unexpectedly receive a call asking for it. When scheduling a vaccine appointment online, schedule it directly through the New York Department of Health or ensure you’re using a legitimate site. •Report fraud. New Yorkers should report vaccine-related fraud by calling 833-VAX-SCAM (833-829-7226) or emailing STOPVAXFRAUD@health.ny.gov. New Yorkers are also encouraged to install the NYS Excelsior Pass Wallet app from the Apple Store or Google Play, or go to https://epass.ny.gov/home. Excelsior Pass and Excelsior Pass Plus are free, secure, voluntary platforms that provide digital proof or a digital copy of COVID-19 vaccination and/or negative test results. Passes can be displayed on any smart device or can be printed from any computer. Provided information
