Pettis Pools celebrates 60 years of making friends in the community by Julie Pettis Time sure does go by in a blink. It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating Pettis Pools’ 50th anniversary, and now here we are, at 60 years! Pettis Pools was established in 1962 when Erma and Larry Pettis, who were both teachers at the time, were looking through the business classifieds for an opportunity to supplement their income during the summer. Having both grown up during the Depression, they never had any money and knew it was up to them to create the future they dreamed of. In fact, Erma, my mom, had a saying she often repeated, “If it’s to be, it’s up to me.” As their daughter, let me tell you, they were not afraid of hard work. Perhaps a hardware store, they thought. Then one day, they saw an advertisement that would change their lives forever. “Fox In-ground Pool Dealership Available!” In 1962 in-ground swimming pools were considered only for the rich and famous, and here Erma and Larry were in rural Hilton. Could it work? They decided to take the chance. They scraped together the money and purchased the dealership, which included one 16x32 rectangular pool. That pool was installed in our own backyard so that my father could learn how to build a pool. He figured that if he was going to make mistakes, best to make them in his own backyard and not a customer’s. That pool lasted 28 years and was the focal point of many happy summers and family parties. So began the business that, to date, has spanned 60 years, two retail store locations, over 70 employees, thousands of pool installations, and, most importantly, six decades of making friends. This past January, Pettis Pools received a 60 years of service award from Fox Pools and won First Place in the Inground Pool category for a project in Victor.

Erma and Larry Pettis started Pettis Pools in 1962.

The Pettis Pools staff is committed to its customers. Julie Pettis is in the front row, third from the left. Pettis Pools is four years older than me, so I can honestly say I grew up in the business. It’s really all I’ve ever known. I’m immensely proud of my parents’ accomplishments. The early years were difficult, and I remember my mom once crying at the kitchen sink because she didn’t know how they were going to pay their bills. I remember times they couldn’t take a salary from the business because paying our employees and our bills was most important. But through all the difficulties, there was always immense love for one another and an unshakeable belief in their ability to work hard, persevere, and ultimately succeed. I wish my parents were still alive. I wish they could see how tremendous our staff is – friendly, knowledgeable, dedicated, and committed to our customers as well as each other. Our most tenured employee has been with us for 43 years, and now a third-generation Pettis has joined the business. The core values set forth by Erma and Larry are still our guiding light for each and every employee at Pettis Pools. They would be so proud to see how much their little company – which started in our garage – has grown. The Pettis family is extremely grateful for the support the community has shown us these past 60 years. We look forward to carrying on our family’s tradition of excellent and honest service, great value, and down-home friendliness for many years to come. As a thank you, Pettis Pools is holding 60 Days of Giveaways starting May 6 through July 4, where prizes will be given away every day. Stop by either of the Pettis Pools locations and register to win. Provided photos

The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists of long term lane closures and crossovers for northbound traffic along NY-390 at Lexington Avenue to accommodate a pavement and bridge rehabilitation project. Beginning at 6 a.m. on Wednesday, May 11, motorists heading north on NY-390 will be crossed over to the southbound lanes prior to Lexington Avenue and will be crossed back over to the northbound lanes once past Lexington Avenue. Traffic in both the northbound and southbound directions will be reduced to two lanes before arriving at Lexington Avenue. This work is scheduled to last no later than Thursday, September 8. Crossovers are utilized to allow crews to rehabilitate the bridge carrying NY-390 over Lexington Avenue more freely and ef-

fectively while the bridge is not being used by motorists. This work marks the first of six bridge rehabilitations that NYSDOT announced earlier this year as part of a larger transformative pavement and bridge rehabilitation project. Additional crossovers and lane reductions are anticipated in coming months to accommodate the remaining bridge work. NYSDOT will provide updated traffic patterns and anticipated schedule as work progresses. The entire project is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2023. All construction activities are weather dependent. For real-time travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org or the mobile site at m.511ny.org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source. politically speaking Jensen to introduce legislation requiring greater oversight of cannabis industry Assemblyman Josh Jensen (R,C,I-Greece) is calling for greater oversight of New York’s new cannabis industry, including mandatory guidelines regarding product tracking and elimination of ambiguity around who is responsible for the inspections of cannabis facilities and products. As marijuana is now legal in New York, Jensen believes it’s critical the state ensures that no cannabis produced by license holders is being sold on the black market and that there is greater clarity in place on who is responsible for the safety of products and facilities. Jensen is planning to introduce legislation that will require local municipalities and county boards of health to be responsible for inspections related to cannabis facilities, with costs to be reimbursed by the state Office of Cannabis Management. The bill would make “seed to sale” track-

ing mandatory, in order to assist state and local governments with collecting taxes, enforcing regulations and verifying sales and distributions to ensure legal sale of all cannabis products. “Now that the use and sale of marijuana is set to be legal and the state has begun issuing licenses, we have to handle it responsibly and safely,” said Jensen. “Without set guidelines in place on who will be responsible for the inspections of marijuana facilities and food-grade products, as well as the assurance that every aspect of the industry is operating in the legal marketplace, we risk the continued sale of marijuana through the black market, inappropriate community uses and inconsistent oversight by New York State.” Provided information

It’s chicken barbecue time in Chili The First Presbyterian Church of Chili will be holding its 19th annual Chicken Barbecue on Sunday, May 15, at 3600 Chili Avenue, from noon until all of the $12 meals are sold. This event has enabled the church to send youth and adults all over the U.S. and Honduras to lend a hand in rebuilding areas hit by storms, floods, and poverty. The scope of the work has been on homes with leaking roofs, flood damaged interiors and peeling paint. The crews help the disabled by building wheelchair ramps and entry porches, digging drainage ditches to help keep the pathways dry. While doing this work, the crews have a chance to lend an open heart, a listening ear and share

the gospel with the residents they are serving. This exchange has proved life changing for many. This year, funds raised from the barbecue will be used to support a new mission at the church – its Food Cupboard. On the third Saturday of each month, people from all over the Rochester area are welcome to stop by and pick up much needed food for their families. There’s always someone available to offer prayers and support as well. Congregation members of all ages donate their time, money, and food to make this event possible. The church has also partnered with Foodlink. Over the years, church members have all contributed in some way to make this event a success. There has always been enough help, enough energy, enough hands, not only from the church but also from the community. Jim Ehrmentraut has been cooking the chicken year after year and Sips Coffee Shop in Irondequoit has donated the cookies that accompany each meal. With thankful hearts, the church looks forward to greeting the community members that come to support its Mission Outreach. Provided information and photo

YouTh hALL of fAmE Caridad Cassady

Cora Gaffney

Caridad is a driven student who has faced many challenges in her young life. At a young age, she was used to taking care of herself and siblings. She was fortunate to be placed into a very loving and supportive foster care home, but Caridad struggled with the boundaries and rules to keep her and her siblings safe. This often spilled over to the classroom. Amy Gillett, School Counselor and nominator, states that Caridad “has defied all odds and achieved great success” and “the amount of personal growth she has made is just incredible.” Caridad has been transformed with the support of her moms who have provided her with a safe, loving and supportive environment. Gillette writes, “she is a great example of not allowing obstacles to get in the way of achieving goals.” Her mothers are Michelle and Terra Cassady.

Despite the looming pandemic and all its uncertainties, Cora and her family were dealt with another hardship when their house caught on fire. This tragedy displaced the family into temporary living spaces, which have changed several times. Cora has been able to maintain an exceptional grade point average and was a member of the Varsity swim team, while helping to insure that she and her siblings were where they needed to be as transportation fluctuated. Churchville-Chili High School Assistant Principal and nominator Steven Colabufo said of Cora, “is a kind and personable young woman” and “has taken on responsibilities and is a leader by her example in our school.” Cora’s parents are Pamela and Timothy Gaffney

Kelsea meritt

Ashlinn Shaw

Kelsea has experienced a great tragedy and loss, when her father passed away unexpectedly in 2020. This, along with COVID, uprooted her life in ways that she could not prepare for. Despite feeling isolated and hopeless, Kelsea eventually found the courage to speak with a counselor. She has learned how to use the support to develop the strength and courage to heal. Kelsea is an exceptional student and possesses many admirable qualities. She is planning to pursue a degree in education with a goal of teaching history. She has a genuine passion for research and teaching. Additionally, Kelsea volunteers with the Special Olympics and with the Charlotte Genesee Lighthouse cleanup, which involves cleaning up historical sites. Churchville-Chili High School Counselor and nominator Jill Mullen said Kelsea, “is one of Churchville-Chili CSD’s most hardworking, resilient, kind and creative students.” She is a “student who has so much potential and so much to offer the world.” Her mother is Eileen McEntee.

Ashlinn is a role model for learning how to deal with her diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. She often struggled with emotional regulation and adaptation throughout the school day. This would often disrupt her day and it could take hours to get back to a good place where she could learn. Ashlinn has worked hard to identify her triggers and to successfully identify coping strategies. She is currently in a work-study placement at Tops Friendly Markets and has received a WBL Award in Health and Safety for “going above and beyond to make sure every step to a task is completed and that safety is always considered.” Our transition counselor, Laura Costa, notes that “Ashlinn is really maturing and growing in this job; not letting things get to her as much.” Spencerport School Counselor and nominator Rebecca DiNatale said, “her growth throughout her high school career has been amazing to witness.” Ashlinn’s hard work will allow her to utilize the strategies she has learned to transition into life as an adult. Her parents are Kristy and Eric Shaw.

Induction Ceremony is Wednesday, May 11, at 5:30 p.m., in the large meeting room of the Ogden Town Hall. Photos by Adrian DeJesus Photography

“I wanted to keep my business local, so I chose Aire Serv in Spencerport. I had 2 techs show up on time and completed a 5-star install efficiently and professionally in the exact time frame they quoted. There were no surprises or extras and I paid exactly what they quoted. I’m very pleased with the install! Nice job guys!” - Chris D. “The service was second to none! The job was done exactly the way they quoted and when they said it would be done. Cleaned up after the job. Extremely professional crew. Would highly recommend them to anyone!” - John M. “We are really happy with the service and that we were even able to get a furnace in these hard times of short supplies. The team did a great job. We will highly recommend them to family and friends. Thank you.” - Linda Y.
