Profiles in policing: Investigator Tyler Dawson, Brockport Police Department

The first in an occasional series focusing on the officers of the BPD, their jobs, their stories, and their thoughts on policing.

I was surprised at his answer when I asked what was the most important skill he gained from the Drug Task Force. Without hesitation, he said, “How to write a search warrant.” He now writes most of the search warrants for the BPD.

I asked about the warrants. I wanted to see one and have him tell me about it. Instead, he fanned out six multi-page warrants and an affidavit from 2019 on the table before us. This was the paperwork he needed to complete one undercover drug deal – a whole day’s worth of preparation. The

but the raccoon ascended out of reach, and the impromptu animal rescue squad was forced to disperse. The raccoon was located the following day, across the canal and under a car. Morelle recognizes local Vietnam veterans in Chili

On April 1, Congressman Joe Morelle recognized local Vietnam Veterans by presenting them with the Vietnam War Commemoration Lapel pin in honor of their service.

“Just after Vietnam Veterans Day, I have the extraordinary privilege of presenting local veterans of the Vietnam War with lapel pins as a lasting memento of our country’s enduring gratitude,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “Vietnam Veterans Day is a time to recognize the men and women who were denied a proper welcome upon returning home from service. I hope that these pins serve as a constant reminder to our selfless veterans that we will never forget their service, sacrifice, and heroism.”

“I am honored to represent the Town of Chili who stand in solidarity with our residents to honor those who bravely served in the Vietnam War,” said Chili Town Supervisor David Dunning. “Though we cannot fix the past, we can certainly assure all who served are treated with respect and honor for the sacrifice made.”

BUM Players world premiere comedy geared for family fun

Local community-theater troupe, the BUM p layers, are currently gearing up for their annual desserttheater comedy. As always, this play will be performed in the Brockport United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, with performances on April 19, 20, 26, and 27 at 7 p.m. each night. And, of course, donated desserts and beverages will be available during intermission and are included in the ticket cost. Through a special longstanding partnership, these desserts will be served by members of the Kiwanis Club of Brockport, which also serves as a co-sponsor.

The BUM players are excited about this upcoming show, since it will be a true World premiere showing of the fifth full-length comedy script in a row written by a BUM players member. This one, entitled One More Time, is written and copyrighted by long-time member and founder Gary “Turk” Thomas, following up on the success of last year’s Lake Effect Blues.

This play is set in the fictitious town of plain Bluff, Nebraska, in a senior-living facility. Mary Smith (Marcy Miceli) and pat reston (Steve richardson) are both residents there and are both retired super-heroes whose powers have faded with age. Because of mental and physical changes, neither recalls their shared past. Eventually, a new resident moves in, Jim Marx (Turk Thomas),

who happens to be a super-villain against whom the others fought on more than one occasion. His powers have also faded over time. When an existential crisis threatens the village, the three are forced to join forces to stop the threat after undercover FBI agent Stu Blass (paul Kimball) leaks their individual secrets to the others. With failing powers, they manage to bumble through, eventually quelling the threat after young Molly Blass (Carla Mesler), a volunteer at the home, discovers powers of her own. After accidentally saving the day, she is still cautioned by Stu and the others to stay out of the superhero business and simply lead a safe and normal existence. Full of hi-jinx and gags, the fun will certainly spill over into the performances.

The play will be directed by playwright Turk Thomas, with Quincy Maxfield in the role as Assistant Director/Stage Manager. Serving as Co-Technical Directors are Thomas and richardson.

Congressman Morelle is a member of The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration—a national 50th anniversary commemoration, authorized by Congress. Embark on a melodic journey to happily ever after

Enter the enchanted world of The Fairytale Gala, a free community concert devoted to the magical movie music of charming princes and princesses, on Saturday, April 13, in the Glazer Music performance Center’s Beston Hall on the Nazareth University campus, 4245 East Avenue, rochester. The concert will showcase a series of fairy tale themed musical selections played by Nazareth School of Music students and rOCmusic, a local non-profit organization dedicated to providing music education to the children of rochester. Doors open at 2 p.m. for the 2:30 p.m. concert.

Conceived of and directed by McKayla Jenkins, The Fairytale Gala started out, once upon a time, as her senior project to explore the connection behind music and emotion.

“Fairy tale movies and the accompanying music have always instilled me with a sense of nostalgia and warmth,” she said recently. “When I feel stressed, I listen to a Disney soundtrack. It reminds me of the happy times of my childhood.” It is the hope of the performers to instill this same sense of happiness in the audience.

The Gala evolved and expanded, and is now a fundraising event for rOCmusic, which will feature three ensembles composed of rOCmusic students in addition to Nazareth University music groups. The concert will feature over 80 musicians – including a choir, a wind ensemble, a rock ensemble, a jazz ensemble, several small eclectic groups, a brass

ensemble, a percussion ensemble, and a string ensemble – and more than 20 well-known musical numbers from popular movies. The show will contain several interactive portions including an exciting sing-along finale to cap off the afternoon. All participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite fairy tale character.

All donated proceeds from the event will go directly to help rOCmusic fund its mission of providing musical opportunities to local children.

“Our mission at rOCmusic is to leverage the collective resources of rochester’s major cultural organizations, educational institutions, and governmental agencies to provide exceptional music education and performance experiences for youth in rochester,” noted its director, rachel Mills. The Fairytale Gala will serve as a fundraiser and a performance experience for rOCmusic students who will perform alongside the collegiate musicians.

“This is a family-friendly event open to anyone who wishes to spend an afternoon making music with others,” added Jenkins.

Profiles in policing: Investigator Tyler Dawson, Brockport Police Department

Tyler Dawson is a 36-year-old Brockport police officer. Born and raised in the Rochester area, he holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Roberts Wesleyan and is married with three young children. Before joining the BPD in 2012, he was an EMT with Gates Ambulance, a volunteer firefighter in Brockport, and a part-time police officer with the Holley Police Department.

My first encounter with Officer Dawson’s police skills was several years ago when I was locked out of the Mayor’s office at the old village hall. He had come in the back door as I was unsuccessfully rattling around in my briefcase for my keys. “Locked out?” he asked, “Got a credit card?” I pulled out my Visa card and handed it to him. He slid it between the door and the door jamb, releasing the spring latch, turned the doorknob, and I was in, impressed.

In April 2019, I had another memorable encounter with Officer Dawson, this time at the police department. It was Scholars Day at SUNY Brockport, a big off-campus party day for those not participating in the academic sessions on campus. I had come by the department for an afternoon “ridealong” on patrol. While waiting, I spotted a tall, scruffy-looking young man standing outside the police station, drinking a soda and chatting with one of the other officers. I couldn’t help but notice his unkempt, long black hair and beard, grease-stained pants, and equally greasy jacket bearing the logo of a car repair shop in another municipality. “Who is this character hanging out at the BPD, and what is he doing here,” I wondered. “You don’t recognize Tyler,” another officer teased. No, I certainly did not. He was working at the time, on loan, so to speak, to The Greater Rochester Area Narcotics Enforcement Team (GRANET) as an undercover agent.

You can’t help smiling when you talk to Investigator Dawson. He has a hearty laugh and a good sense of humor. He’s an enthusiastic conversationalist and thoughtful instructor in the mysteries of police work. Most of all, he loves his job as an investigator, which Chief Cuzzupoli appointed him to three years ago. “Best job in the world,” he says emphatically.

We began with his work with the drug task force. Chief Cuzzupoli appointed him to the Narcotics Enforcement Team in 2019, and he served 19 months. The usual term is three years, but he was needed back in Brockport. If the opportunity arose, he said, “I would go back in a heartbeat.”

Rochester is a drug hub that distributes to small communities. For dealers from Rochester, Brockport and other small satellite communities are safer areas in which to do their business. What he learned in Rochester, Officer Dawson could use on local targets. And there are some.

It takes a team to do undercover work. Cooperation and confidentiality are key. Officer Dawson worked with a team of five individuals from various regional law enforcement agencies. He sees a real advantage to Drug Task Force work. Getting to know people during an investigation is much more effective than just buying undercover drugs off the street or taking drugs found during a traffic stop. On the task force, you have time to focus on one aspect of law enforcement, infiltrate it, and pursue a high level of investigation. “You can’t scratch this just being on the road,” Tyler commented. “The radio dictates everything when you’re on the road.”

affidavit goes to the judge, who signs it along with the warrants. The affidavit tells the judge what the Affiant (the undercover agent in this case) is going to do and that he has probable cause to do it. It summarizes the warrants. Additionally, before you even do the warrant, a multi-page operations plan has to be prepared, which needs to be approved by the command staff. The warrants were for two properties, two people, and two vehicles. Tyler executed the undercover buy of cocaine; the team confiscated a large amount of cocaine that a drug field test determined to be laced with fentanyl, along with $74,000 in cash. Then followed writing up the charges for each individual, booking them, and a whole day’s worth of logging the confiscated property into the property room at the Rochester Police Department. Clearly, an enormous amount of police work is paperwork.

Ms. Alvarez-Mapp will lead a presentation and discussion about the New York State Equal Rights Amendment – a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would permanently protect the rights and

freedoms of all New Yorkers. The Equal Rights Amendment will be on the ballot this November. All are welcome for this important discussion to become better informed before voting. Admission is free.

Hilton CSD appoints David Yates as communications director

At its March 26 meeting, the Hilton Board of Education appointed David Yates as director of communications. He will replace Grace Scism, who is retiring on July 1. Yates is currently the director of communications at McQuaid Jesuit High School, a position he’s held for the past two years. Before McQuaid, Yates was the director of communications for the East Irondequoit Central School District. He began his career in television, first in Elmira and then in Rochester where he was the weekend sports anchor for News 8 WROC.

A graduate of Hilton High School, Yates went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in communications from SUNY Fredonia.

“They say that you can’t go home again, but I am thrilled to prove that isn’t true,” said Yates. “Hilton has always held a special place in my heart and I’m so excited to have the opportunity to share the stories that make the district a wonderful place to learn, live, work, and grow.”

A resident of Greece, Yates has a daughter, Meghan, who works as a speech-language therapist in East Lansing, Michigan, and a son, Ian, who is a science teacher at Allendale Columbia School.

Yates will begin his new position on April 15.

Final Town of Sweden Eclipse update

The April 8 Total Eclipse is nearly here and the Town of Sweden has prepared as well as possible for an influx of visitors. The Town has taken special care to heed the advice of law enforcement and emergency services agencies. Here are a few highlights for residents and visitors:

•The Community Center, 4927 Lake Road, is closed as is its parking lot for the day. All programs resume on Tuesday, April 9.

•The Town Hall, 18 State Street, and Highway Garage, 40 White Road, are open normal hours and for parking.

•The parking lot at the front of Sweden Town Park,

4761 Redman Road, is open until full (approximately 100 cars). The rest of the Town Park is closed to vehicles but open to pedestrians/bicyclists.

•Lakeview Cemetery is closed to vehicular traffic for the day.

•All roads are open. Parking is prohibited on oddnumbered sides of all subdivision streets and some other town-owned roads. Signs will help identify restricted areas.

•The Sweden Planning Board meeting for April 8 has been canceled. The regular Town Board meeting of April 9 will be held as scheduled.

For the first time since COVID, the Hilton Apple Fest Photo Contest is returning. This year’s theme is “Here Comes the Sun.” Send your best images that show any aspect of the sun. Photos from the Eclipse day are especially welcome.

Enter in one of three categories: Adult, Teen, or Kids. There is a limit of three entries apiece. Adult entries must be either 7”x10” or 8”x10”, either vertical (portrait) or horizontal (landscape) and mounted on a stiff board. Kids’ entries must be 4”x6” and unmounted. The entry fee is $5 per image for adults,

$3 per image for teens, and free for kids. Prizes for adults are $100 for first place, $50 for second, and $25 for third. Teen prizes are $80, $40, and $20. Kids’ prizes are $40, $20, and $10.

Stacy L. Stanton, Clerk-Treasurer for the Village of Churchville, has been recognized as a Credentialed Municipal Finance Officer (“CMFO”) by the New York State Society of Municipal Finance Officers (“NYSMFO”) for achieving its high educational, experience, and participatory requirements.

Ms. Stanton has been employed by the Village of Churchville in her current office for four years and is a member in good standing of the NYSMFO. She has received a plaque and pin denoting this accomplishment.

Batavia Train Show scheduled for April 14

The Genesee Society of Model Engineers will be holding the Spring 2024 edition of the Great Batavia Train Show along with the Batavia Railroad Prototype Modelers Meet on Sunday, April 14, at the Richard C. Call Arena on the campus of Genesee Community College in Batavia. Show hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is $6 adults, $3 under age 18, and free for children under 13. Parking is free, and a snack bar will be available.

For 50 years, the Great Batavia Train Show has been one of the premier hobby events in Western New York. It typically attracts 1,200 to 1,500 model railroad enthusiasts and railfans from across Western and Central NY, Northwestern Pennsylvania, and Southern Ontario. All forms of model railroad and train-related merchandise will be available.

Over 100 vendors will be offering all scales of model trains and historic railroad items. Modeling demonstrations, and a limited number of portable layouts, will be part of the fun.

The Genesee Society of Model Engineers was founded in Batavia and has promoted the hobby of model railroading in the Western New York area for over 50 years. This not-for-profit organization is headquartered at 50 Main Street in Oakfield. In their facility above M&T Bank, club members maintain four operating model train displays. Visitors are welcome on Tuesday evenings from 7 tp 9 p.m., and an open house is offered free to the public each December.

Paul Michael Anderson, 61, passed away peacefully on March 6th, 2024 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Paul is predeceased by his father, Paul D. Anderson. He is survived by his dear mother Connie Anderson, devoted sister Cindy (Tom) Capuano, brother Steven (Julie) Anderson, Uncle Guy and Aunt Barbara DeVigili, as well as his loving nieces, nephews and many friends.

Paul received a B.S. in Health Sciences/Marketing from SUNY Brockport (‘84). He had a passion for cooking and received an A.S. in Culinary Arts from Florida’s Tidewater Community College.

Taste NY’s partnership with five Minor League Baseball teams across New York State is a home run, bringing the very best of New York’s local food and beverages to more than 1.2 million fans at stadiums across New York and giving a boost to New York agriculture. Throughout the season, for many minor league baseball teams, New York’s “Eat Local, Drink Local” program will be showcasing delicious, locally made favorites and exciting promotions at the Buffalo Bison, Rochester Red Wings, Syracuse Mets, Hudson Valley Renegades, and TriCity ValleyCats stadiums. These partnerships provide an opportunity to boost sales for over 60 participating vendors and increase their exposure to consumers. In 2023, Taste NY’s partnerships with teams brought more than $5.7 million in sales to New York State farmers and food and beverage producers, with expanded partnerships launching in 2024 aiming to build on that success.

Bob met his wife, Sue, while they were both working at Northgate Wegmans. He worked for Wegmans from age 16 until he retired after 47 years. He worked his way up becoming front end manager, store manager, district manager, director of store operations and then becoming an Executive VP. Wegmans was his second family. Bob had a great love for sports. He was an avid Notre Dame and Yankees fan.

His Funeral Mass was held April 2 at St. Lawrence Church, North Greece Road. Interment at St. John’s Cemetery, Spencerport. RESOLVED that the Board of Education of the Churchville-Chili Central School District is hereby authorized to establish a Capital Reserve Fund pursuant to Section 3651 of the Education Law (to be known as the “2024 School Bus and Infrastructure Capital Reserve Fund”), with the purpose of such fund being to finance the purchase of diesel and zero emission/electric school buses and vehicles and construction, reconstruction and other capital improvements in connection therewith, such capital costs being of a type that would be eligible for bond financing under the local finance law, and costs incidental thereto, the ultimate amount of such fund to be $15,000,000, plus earnings thereon, the probable term of such fund to be ten (10) years, but such fund shall continue in existence until liquidated in accordance with the Education Law or until the funds are exhausted, and the sources from which the funds shall be obtained for such Reserve are (i) amounts from budgetary appropriations from time to time, and (ii) unappropriated fund balance made available by the Board of Education from time to time, and (iii) New York State Aid received and made available by the Board of Education from time to time, all as permitted by law.

Michael Bourne appointed Spencerport HS principal

Michael Bourne has been appointed as the new principal of Spencerport High School, starting in June 2024. He will be working closely with retiring Principal Sean McCabe during his initial onboarding to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.

Superintendent Ty Zinkiewich said, “We are pleased to welcome Mike Bourne as the new principal of Spencerport High School. The Board of Education officially approved his appointment on March 26, following a thorough search process that included stakeholder input and interviews by a committee consisting of students, parents/guardians, staff, civic leaders, and board members.

Bourne comes to Spencerport from the Brockport Central School District, where he has worked as an administrator since 2013. Specifically, he has been an assistant principal for the last nine years and the coordinator of inclusive education for two years. His career in education began in 2005, teaching social studies at the

secondary level in the Kendall Central School District and for two years serving as their coordinator of special education.

Congressional Art Competition open to high school students

Each spring, a nation-wide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Members of the U.S. House of representatives. The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and uplift the artistic talent of our community.

The competition is open to all high school students in the 25th Congressional District, represented by Congressman Joe Morelle. The winning artwork of the district’s competition will be displayed for one year in the U.S. Capitol. The exhibit in Washington will include the winning artwork from all participating districts from around the country. The winning artwork will also be featured on the House of representative’s web page.

Artwork entered in the contest may be up to 26” x 26” x 4” if and when framed; unframed artwork must be small enough to accommodate a frame that is no larger than 26” x 26” x 4’. The artwork must not weigh more than 15 pounds, including the frame. Accepted mediums are:

• p a intings - including oil, acrylics, and watercolor

•Drawings - including pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, and markers (It is recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)

•Collages - must be two dimensional

•prints - including lithographs, silkscreen, and block prints

•Mixed Media - use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.

CTE students shine at SkillsUSA regional competition

Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Career and Technical Education students’ skills were in full effect on March 5 at the SkillsUSA NY Area 1 regionals. BOCES 2 CTE students medaled in 11 competitions, earned honors in three additional and took home a regional officer position.

Two BOCES 2 CTE students placed first in their respective competitions. Dental Assisting student Le’Asijah Bullard (Greece) earned gold in Action Skills while Outdoor powersports Technology student Tommy Auer (Churchville-Chili) garnered the top spot in Small Engine Service Basic.

Seven BOCES 2 CTE students finished in second place across four competitions. Individual wins were garnered by: Dental Assisting student Isabella Goosey (Hilton) in Action Skills; Digital and Visual Communication student Avery Monsees (Spencerport) in Advertising Design; and Baking student Madison Baird (Wheatland-Chili) in Commercial Baking. Four BOCES 2 CTE students earned a second-place team win in Quiz Bowl: Digital and Visual Communication student Erin Newton (Spencerport); Dental Assisting students Thiara Morrobel-Moreta (Greece) and Melana Tobin (Hilton); and Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance student ryan Williams (Brockport).

Additionally, four third-place victories were won by BOCES 2 CTE students: Introduction to Construction Trades student Maddox LaJuett (Brockport) in Carpenter’s Assistant Basic; Criminal Justice student Ariel Travis (Gates Chili) in Criminal Justice; Culinary Arts student Keith Wyatt (Gates Chili) in Food prep Basic; and Den tal Assisting student Nivea McInnis (Greece) in prepared Speech.

Adding to the top finishers were three BOCES 2 CTE students with fourth-place finishes: Culinary Arts student Wayquill Wynn (Gates Chili) in Culinary Arts; Medical Laboratory Assisting and phlebotomy student Kennedy Johnson (Greece) in Job Interview; and Digital and Visual Communication student Faith Waver (Gates Chili) in photography.

Also at the regional competition, Medical Laboratory Assisting and phlebotomy student Savannah Wehner (Spencerport) was named New York State Area 1 Vice president.

Brynn King wins Texas Relays, sets NCAA Division II outdoor pole vault record

Brynn King felt right at home in her native Texas on Saturday, March 30.

King, a fifth-year student at Wesleyan University, won the women’s elite pole vault at the Clyde Littlefield Texas relays in record-breaking fash ion at Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium on the University of Texas campus.

King cleared 4.68 meters (15-feet, 4.25 inches) to break her own NCAA Division II outdoor record of 4.60 meters (15-1) while establishing new personal and meet standards for the university division.

“It was exciting,” said King, a native of The Woodlands, Texas, who had about 20 family members on hand to cheer her on.

King, who won the NCAA Division II indoor championship with a record-breaking effort of 4.65

meters (15-3) on March 8, entered the competition at 4.30 meters (14-1) and was successful on her first attempt. She needed two attempts to clear 4.50 meters (14-9) and the field was down to four when she decided to skip the next bar.

“We weren’t as focused on other people, we just stuck to our plan,” King said. “The meet was moving pretty fast, so we decided to pass on 4.6 and get a little bit of extra rest and go for 4.68.”

The decision set King up for success when Hana Moll, the only other collegian in the field of six, Anicka Newell and Emily Grove each missed their three attempts at 4.6.

“I passed on the bar before, so I knew that I just had to go out there and make a jump,” King said. “I knew that I had the pole and I had the grip, I just had to go out there and execute.”

King was using two poles that she had never used before while trying to attain a height that she had reached for the first time in practice earlier this week.

After a self-described “funky jump” on her first try, King clinched the victory on her second attempt by landing the fifth-best jump in NCAA women’s outdoor history. She then tried for the all-time NCAA outdoor mark, but missed all three attempts at 4.74 meters. Olivia Gruver of the University of Washington owns the NCAA of of 4.73 meters (15-6.25) which was set on March 29, 2019.

“This was another huge meet for Brynn with extra pressures and she h andled them well,” r oberts pole vault coordinator Jenn Suhr said.

“She planted two poles that she has never been on and came away with a pr (personal record). She took really good shots at the overall collegiate record and is finding her timing at the higher bars.”

Suhr, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist, owns the all-time meet record of 4.91 meters (16-1.25) in 2019.

King, who was a high school senior at the time, was in the stands to watch Suhr that day after clearing 13-feet to finish fifth in the High School A Division.
