Architect selected for Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge project Part of Reimagine the Canals initiative, planned bridge will connect the SUNY Brockport campus to Empire State Trail

Rendering of the Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge design by SHoP Architects. Construction on the project is set to begin in 2023. On January 29, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced the selection of SHoP Architects as the lead designer of the Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge over the Erie Canal. Originally announced as part of the Governor’s State of the State address in January 2020, this new pedestrian bridge in the Village of Brockport represents the first large-scale infrastructure project to begin under the state’s Reimagine the Canals initiative. “The Erie Canal has been a tremendous resource for New York for more than 200 years, and this project will utilize long-standing infrastructure to provide recreational amenities and greater connectivity for the Village of Brockport,” Governor Cuomo said. “The Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge builds upon the canal’s iconic infrastructure and provides new opportunities for New Yorkers to get outdoors and take advantage of the beauty and countless activities along the canal and the Empire State Trail. This project is only one aspect of our efforts to Reimagine the Canals - a visionary plan to transform the historic waterway that will help grow tourism, spur economic activity for decades to come.” Constructed adjacent to an existing Erie Canal guard gate, the new Brockport Loop

Pedestrian Bridge will connect the SUNY Brockport campus to the Empire State Trail, a multi-use trail that connects New York City to Canada, and Albany to Buffalo. The trail, which parallels the Erie Canal, provides a centrally located recreational amenity for New Yorkers who want to experience the outdoors. Once built, the bridge will also complement the Village of Brockport’s recent installation of a floating dock and plans for a nearby boathouse by serving as a viewing platform for anticipated rowing competitions on the canal. The Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge represents a new future for the Erie Canal by adaptively reusing historic infrastructure for community benefit today. Funding for this bridge project will come from New York Power Authority (NYPA) and a $2 million grant by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, which will be administered by the Rochester Area Community Foundation. To complete the Brockport Loop, additional funds will be secured to create a new trail along the SUNY campus side of the canal leading from the new pedestrian bridge to the nearby Smith Street bridge, which will also see future improvements. NYPA selected SHoP Architects, a New York City-based New York State Small Business Enterprise firm, to leverage its

experience with revitalizing aging urban infrastructure and further develop a contextsensitive conceptual design for the project. Ove Arup & Partners, a global firm with an office in New York City, has extensive experience with pedestrian bridge design and engineering, both in New York State and around the world. “The Reimagine the Canals initiative is about adaptive reuse and re-activation of canal infrastructure, offering New Yorkers new ways to engage with canalside communities,” said NYPA President and CEO Gil C. Quiniones. “SHoP’s submission employs contemporary design to highlight and complement the historic infrastructure of the canal, and we are pleased to see the design phase of this exciting project move ahead.” Brockport Mayor Margay Blackman said, “The Village of Brockport is excited about the Brockport Loop and the pedestrian bridge that is the anchor to the entire project. The state-of-the-art pedestrian bridge not only underscores the strong partnership between SUNY Brockport and the village, but literally links the college directly to the village via the Erie Canal. The bridge itself will provide a platform for viewing future regattas and a place to safely sit and experience activity on the canal. As the architec-

tural anchor for a much larger project (the Loop), the pedestrian bridge represents an economic stimulus to completing a literal loop connecting the college and the village to the Empire State Trail.” “SUNY Brockport is so pleased that progress is continuing on the Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge,” said SUNY Brockport President Heidi Macpherson. “As a college engaged with our community, we know that connecting the campus to the Empire State Trail will benefit both the campus and the village, so I thank Governor Cuomo, NYPA, and the Canal Corporation for their vision.” Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation President and CEO David Egner said, “The Reimagine the Canals initiative is a great example of how the historic Erie Canal can be redeveloped across the state to become a more vital force for boosting local economies, inspiring new forms of recreation and tourism, and strengthening environmental resiliency.” Egner added that the Brockport Loop will allow “connections to the many recreational, cultural and economic assets in the Brockport community” for those traveling along the Empire State Trail. Construction of the Brockport Loop Pedestrian Bridge will begin in 2023. Provided information and photo

Sweden ZBA grants area variance On January 21, the Town of Sweden Zoning Board of Appeals granted an area variance of 35 feet to enable the construction of a single-family home on approximately 70.63 acres of land southwest of the abandoned end of Redman Road. In making the determination, the ZBA found that the variance request was not substantial, self-created, or feasibly remedied by another method. The board also determined there would be no adverse environmental impact or undesirable change in the character of the neighborhood by granting the variance. The five-member ZBA meets only upon application to area or use variances of the Sweden Town Code. Provided information

Information Needed

On Famous Irish Freedom Fighter’s

Grave Missing In Brockport!

While researching our family ancestry, we recently discovered that we had a great uncle who was a nationally known Irish Freedom Fighter. His name is “Exile” John Joseph McBride. He was mentioned in over 1000 old newspaper articles - from all over America - between 1880 until his death in 1911.

In 1862, Exile fled Ireland to avoid imprisonment from the oppressive British government and settled in Brockport. His parents (Matthew and Jane King McBride), along with siblings (Stephen, Patrick, James and Mary) also moved here 3 years later. In 1866, Exile took part in the Battle of Ridgeway, but this time was captured. Upon his release, he spent the next 40 years of his life passionately traveling throughout the United States, seeking support against British oppression in his homeland. Exile was very well known and had met with 4 United States presidents. He was truly a human rights crusader for Ireland. While all the newspapers state that Exile was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Brockport, there is no gravestone or burial records. If you have any information please call Mike McBride at 202-1532. Thank you for your help!

Comments For the love of cursive On behalf of the Clarkson Historical Society we would like to thank two women who responded to our advertisement about the Cursive Handwriting Contest after reading it in this paper. We are gratified to hear that they love using cursive writing, and that they applaud what we are doing. We believe that writing in longhand can have so many benefits to each person, no matter their age, and we’re so glad that others do too. Congratulations on a successful fundraiser I recently read an article in Westside News regarding the Kiwanis Club of Spencerport’s fundraising efforts for the Willie Bee Foundation, and wanted to congratulate the club on the success of the Pineway Ponds 5K. Despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was happy to read that 2020’s race raised the largest amount ever. Community organizations like the Kiwanis have shown great resolve and dedication during this crisis. Now more than ever, it is crucial that we continue to support causes like the Willie Bee Foundation. I am proud to have the Kiwanis Club of Spencerport in our community. Again, congratulations on a successful fundraiser.

The New York State Canal system has been, and continues to be, a significant driver of economic development for upstate communities and a valuable resource for recreation. As the 2021 navigation season approaches, the Canal Corporation is actively engaging with a wide range of local stakeholders across New York who rely on the waterway to identify their needs. The Canal Corporation is also assessing and addressing portions of the system’s aging infrastructure. These projects include undertaking efforts to optimize operation of the locks and lift bridges based on usage data when the Canal system opens this spring. As in previous years, the Canal system is projected to operate mid-May through mid-October and no changes are expected to the normal hours of operation. In addition, New York State’s iconic Erie Canal is not being renamed. The Erie Canal will remain the Erie Canal just as it has been for two centuries. The Kendall National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is spearheading a new composting program in 2021. Partnering with a local business, Impact Earth, composting procedures are being incorporated into the school’s lunchtime routine. Composting with Impact Earth is different from composting in your backyard. Impact Earth utilizes a system very similar to a weekly garbage collection service to pick up compost from local schools, businesses, and homes. They bring that material to their enclosed composting facilities. This company monitors and turns the compost material daily, allowing them to accept a wider variety of food waste than your backyard compost bin. Kendall students are able to put any type of food in the composting buckets, from fruits and vegetables to sandwich crusts and chicken nuggets. Impact Earth is also able to compost napkins and other paper products soiled by food. Working with Impact Earth, NJHS students participated in a waste assessment that produced eye-opening results. They discovered that Kendall produces 230 pounds of total waste in a day; more importantly, about 49 percent of the waste produced could be diverted into composting or recycling. This number highlights the impact that NJHS members will be able to make on a daily basis. The goal of this program is to help Kendall have a better impact on the community. The members of NJHS are very excited about this opportunity for leadership in the school as well as the impact it will have on the community’s trash production. Each day during both lunch periods, NJHS members travel between lunch locations in the school with a green bucket, educating students about how to separate their trash, what is compostable and what is not, and

During the first week of February, 223 pounds of food scraps from the Jr./Sr. High School were composted rather than going to a landfill. The program will soon be implemented in the Elementary School as well. Photo from @KendallEagles on Twitter. how to make this part of their regular routine. Impact Earth will be picking up the school’s compost waste once a week and giving back rich compost dirt twice a year. Emma Quintern, a two-year member of the NJHS, commented, “This program is a leadership opportunity for NJHS members because my peers and I will spark change amongst the other schools in Orleans County, and hopefully, become a pioneer for other small schools in other counties and states. Our composting program should reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills.” Provided information and photo

Fall in love with the outdoors at GCV&M Instead of hibernating this February, young and old alike can head to Genesee Country Village & Museum for nature-focused activities, online and in-person classes, camps for kids, and a Valentine’s Day treat. Boost your mood with the power of plants through new horticulture class series A new class series offered by Orleans County Cornell Cooperative Extension will guide participants through the basics of common horticultural subjects as well as provide a hands-on plant-based project intended to boost the spirits. The “Horticulture for Mind and Body” class series will feature monthly educational classes that touch on the benefit of each topic to human

Certified Horticulture Therapist Gerry Sherman will lead the introductory Zoom class “Horticulture as Therapy” on February 24.

health, the basic educational groundwork of each topic, and a hands-on activity. The series will launch on Wednesday, February 24, with a general overview of “Horticulture as Therapy” on Zoom by certified Horticulture Therapist Gerry Sherman of Hello Dahlia Horticulture. The classes will continue once a month on Wednesday (in-person) or Thursday (virtual) evenings until the end of November. Topics include Indoor Greenspace, Herbs for Health and Well-being, Tremendous Trees, and more. Complete class descriptions, dates, and times can be found on the Orleans County CCE website orleans.cce.cornell.edu. Research now backs up what many gardeners have known for centuries - it feels good to be around plants. Plants can have many benefits to human health and well-being, often with little input or effort by the human. Being around plants has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels, increase creativity, happiness, and self-esteem, and improve memory, attention span, and productivity (Journal of Environmental Horticulture, March 2019). The effects of these benefits can be felt in natural green spaces such as parks and forests, in landscaped environments like yards and gardens, or even indoors with the help of potted ornamental plants or natural décor. These benefits can be so important to human health that they are regularly recommended to people across all demographics to combat

the stress and strains of everyday life. Horticulture Therapy is a blossoming field of therapy focusing on the use of horticulture (defined by Merriam Webster as “the science and art of growing fruits, vegetables, flowers, or ornamental plants) to improve physical and mental health. This type of therapy is typically conducted in clinical settings by certified Horticultural Therapists. But the benefits of using plants to feel good can be as informal as tending to a potted houseplant in your own home. With that in mind, Orleans County CCE Horticulture Educator Katie Oakes designed a series of classes for the community with the focus on the mental and physical benefits of horticulture, especially important this year as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact people’s lives in numerous ways. “We’ve seen such a surge in first-time gardeners over the past year, as more and more people are spending extra time at home, “ explained Oakes. “It has also been documented that the pandemic has increased levels of stress, anxiety, and negative feelings in people of all ages. I wanted to offer a program that addressed this shift in a fun and educational way.” The class series will be offered both inperson (following all current NYS COVID19 guidelines for gatherings) and virtually via Zoom. The class fees will be on a sliding scale based on self-assessed payment ability (participants pay what they can afford).

Plants can add color and cheer to an otherwise dull living space. Because each class will have materials included for the hands-on activity, class size will be limited, and pre-payment is required to offset the cost of supplies. These classes will be geared toward a wide range of ages (older children to the elderly) and abilities. To register for these classes or to ask any horticulture-related question, call 585798-4265 or email Katie Oakes at klo54@ cornell.edu. Provided information and photos

“The Enser Brothers” of Hilton the pool. At age 10, Jared held some of the club team records and I worked extra hard to go after every one of them. For the first few years I swam varsity, I was known as ‘Jared’s Little Brother’ behind the blocks. I had to fight and compete hard to make a name for myself.”

by Warren Kozireski Many families experience sibling rivalry. Who is taller, who finishes their homework first, or who does mom like best? In their final year competing together in high school, Hilton varsity swimmers Jared (senior) and Justin (sophomore) Enser have used their sibling rivalry as motivation to now hold a combined 12 school or pool records. “Both boys hate losing even more than they like winning, Hilton varsity head coach Jeffrey Sadowski said. “This season in the 14 individual races they have competed in, each one of them has only lost one individual race. “They both love a good head-to-head battle while racing and find ways to squeeze out victories just when you think they don’t have anything left in the tank. “Over the past ten years of coaching varsity boys at Hilton, I have had a lot of brothers come through the program. There were plenty of times you could sense some sibling rivalry. But with Jared and Justin, everyone knows the rivalry between the two of them, and it is easy to see at practice each day. They train together and are always racing.” As this is written, Jared holds three individual school records in the 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 100 backstroke; two relay school records in the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay, plus two relay pool records in the 400 Freestyle Relay at Canandaigua and at Hilton. Justin owns one individual school record in the 50 freestyle (breaking the previous mark held by his brother), and swam with his brother for the four school and pool records in the 200 Medley Relay and 400 Freestyle Relay. Jared has swum state cut times in four events (50, 100, 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly) as one of the area’s most versatile swimmers. And every good coach knows what buttons to push to get the most out of their team as Sadowski recalled. “In relays when they were both in their early high school years of eighth-grade and freshman year I always put them last in relays and made sure that they would be behind by a significant amount. Jared and Justin love to chase and being relied on to handle the pressure of coming from behind to win.” Q: What goals did you set for yourself this season? Jared: “My goals heading in this season was to get as many state cut times as possible and further diversify my swimming portfolio. Take as many names off the team record board as I could.”

Q: What drew you to swimming? Jared: “Like most kids, I tried almost all sports, then my parents had me go to a trial for the Hilton Area Swim Team. They tell the story of the first night I asked if I could jump off the diving board, they may have said yes to get me to go. I still think my parents ‘strongly encouraged’ me to go for the first few years. Swimming is also one of the greatest forms of exercise; it helped me burn off a lot of energy when I was young. When I was seven, I liked getting ribbons, which made me want to keep competing. Swimming is a team sport, but it is also a very individual sport. This means that it is up to each person on the team to motivate themselves to train harder and push themselves. If you have a bad swim there is no one to blame but yourself; I like that accountability.” Justin: “When I was five, I spent a lot of time at the pool watching my brother swim. At six, I just wanted to get in the water and compete, I was bored in the stands.”

Hilton varsity swimmers Justin and Jared Enser. Provided photo. Justin: “This season my goal was to make state cuts in multiple events (50 free & 100 free). My goal was to go under 22 seconds and take my brother’s school record in the 50 free. I also want our relays to win Sectionals, make state cuts and get the team records.” Q: What has it been like competing together? Jared: “When you win with your brother, it’s a different experience - it is better. It’s cool to see our last name up there twice on the relay record board. There’s a sense of pride in that sight. Because there are two of us and the level both of us are competing at, to competitors we have become the ‘Enser Brothers’ – for the most part – we are no longer just ‘Jared’ or ‘Justin’ Enser.” Justin: “I like the competition and it really motivates me. It makes it twice as fun having my biggest competition on the team being my big brother. It’s a different feeling to be congratulated by your brother, rather than just another teammate, when you get out of the pool. Jared was the first

one to congratulate me when I broke his 50 free team record. It will be weird next year without him. I have been swimming with him since I started.” Q: Is there any sibling rivalry as in trying to beat the time of your older brother or making sure the younger brother doesn’t beat your times? Jared: “Yes, there is a little bit of sibling rivalry every time we jump in the pool. I want to make the records harder for him to break so that I can graduate before he touches them. Having a younger brother in the next lane is different than just competing against another teammate – it becomes personal in and out of the pool. I believe it motivates both of us to compete harder. At times we aren’t just going against the team, but we are going against each other for bragging rights at the kitchen table.” Justin: “Yes, a lot! It’s always a fight between us for that number one spot on the team. I believe the sibling rivalry has made us both faster. I have had to chase Jared’s times since the first day I got in

Q: Why do you think you have been so successful in the sport? Jared: “The support from my parents and coaches has helped me become successful in this sport. Coach Jeff has been my coach since I was seven; our long-time bond has helped him know what works best to motivate me and push me to be the best swimmer I can be. My club coach (who happens to be my pediatrician), known as Dr./Coach to my family, has helped me become a stronger swimmer - encouraging me and analyzing my technique. Having two coaches who collaborate and want to see me succeed has pushed me to believe in myself, stay motivated, and work even harder than I ever have.” Justin: “The work I have put in and always wanting to beat Jared’s times. My coaches motivating me and putting time and effort into getting me to where I am today. My teammates pushing me each and every day.” Jared is wrapping up his high school swimming career and plans to compete in college, though he has not yet decided where to attend. And Justin still has two more years to beat his brother’s times and add the Enser name to a few more Hilton records.
