Nothing stops Hilton senior from achieving his goals Those who have met Hilton High School Senior Braiden Wingrove know that he’s up for any challenge. Every school day for the past few weeks, he has been working in the Cadet Trading Post from 7:30 to

Braiden Wingrove uses a money reading device to determine the value of the currency.

8:15 a.m. cashing out students who stop in to buy snacks and Cadet gear. Braiden and his aide, Kelly Ramble, created a book with a braille embosser that lists each item for sale, the item and price written in braille, and the bar code. Braiden finds the item that someone wants to purchase in braille, scans the bar code, and can determine how much money he is receiving by using a money reading device and the feel of the coins. Braiden said that it’s good work experience and something he can add to his resume. The Trading Post isn’t Braiden’s first job. He also sold cookies and lemonade at Visions Camp for the Blind and worked in the dining facility at the SUNY Brockport Camp Abilities. In his spare time, Braiden is a member of the cross country and track and field teams at Hilton High School, plays baritone saxophone, has been in two plays, creates Lego robots, and is a member of the Cadet Robotics Team. After graduation, Braiden will head to Boston to the Carroll Center for the Blind for a five-month college preparatory program and then plans to study computer programming at SUNY Brockport. Churchville-Chili students use talent and hard work to support Willie Bee Foundation Students in Churchville-Chili High School’s Functional Life Skills class got back in the game this year after two years off due to the pandemic – renewing their annual tradition of handcrafting holiday decorations to raise money for a community organization. This time around, they chose to support the Willie Bee Foundation, a nonprofit that benefits local families with a child facing life-threatening illness, donating almost $600 in cash and gifts. In addition, they donated 60 pairs of socks, purchased with funds from their Unified Saints Café coffee cart business, to the Open Door Mission. “Since the holiday craft projects began in 2005, the Life Skills class has raised over $12,945 for charity,” said teacher Margaret Brongo. “Students are thankful to our supportive customers, who are members of our district educational community. Our crafters love the fact that their work and creativity can make a difference in the lives of others. The students take this very seriously and faculty members look forward to backing the project every winter.” The 2021 holiday season saw the group fulfilling orders for 117 white sock snowmen, filled with rice and decorated with colorful scarves, pom-poms, buttons and happy faces. Ultimately, $593.98 was

donated to their charity of choice, the Willie Bee Foundation (https://www.thewilliebeefoundation.org). The organization was founded in 2017 by Clay and Christine Beeman, who lost their son to cancer. Christine teaches English at Churchville-Chili High School.

Over the past 16 years, Life Skills classes have crafted a variety of charming elves, mice, penguins, reindeer, and polar bears from socks and rice. Proceeds from the project have gone to Golisano Children’s Center, Ronald McDonald House, American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy

Life Skills class members hold a check for $593.98 for the Willie Bee Foundation. Organization representatives Founder Christine Beeman and Creative Director Chelsea Whitney, on hand for the presentation, are also both teachers at the high school. Provided photo.

Association, Honor Flight, Make a Wish, Lollypop Farm, The American Red Cross, School of the Holy Childhood, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Camp Smile, The Dream Factory, Gigi’s Playhouse, and Homesteads for Hope. “The holiday craft project is the perfect opportunity to apply the skills we learn and practice in the classroom,” said Brongo. “Most of the orders this year were taken online, but students still learned interpersonal communication skills, like greeting customers and delivering orders. They learned how to measure rice for the filling, and practiced writing and replying to emails. They also used soft skills needed for employment, like following directions, getting along with coworkers, and exercising quality control.” In addition to the annual holiday craft, students also practice vocational and interpersonal skills through the classroom’s coffee cart business - taking orders and delivering hot chocolate and coffee to staff and teachers at the high school. Running this small business gives students the chance to interact with customers, handle money, manage inventory, and build confidence. The Unified Saints Café has been sidelined since the beginning of the pandemic, but everyone is hoping it will start again soon. Provided information

Monroe County 4-H’s Save the Snowpeople enters final month In January, Monroe County 4-H Youth Development launched Save the Snowpeople, a challenge that encourages youth and families to be active throughout the winter via outdoor explorations and activities in Monroe County Parks. Participating youth are special agents on a mission to save snowpeople – now an endangered species as climate change makes our winters warmer and shorter. Geared to families with children ages five to 19, Save the Snowpeople invites families to complete five activities in five different Monroe County Parks before April 1. Those completing the challenge can enter to win prizes, including $100 Wegmans Gift Cards (courtesy of the Ontario Beach Park Program Committee) and $100 in Rochester Public Market Gift Token packages (courtesy of Friends of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County). The mission challenges include building shelters, communicating with our feathered friends, finding and leaving a message in a hidden geocache, identifying trees, and yes – building a snowperson. “Humans are not bears – we need to stay active throughout winter,” says Andrea Lista, Executive Director of Cornell Cooperative Extension-Monroe County. “Embarking on the Save the Snowpeople mission is a great way to keep young – and not so young – bodies and brains moving and learning all winter long. It’s also a wonderful way to explore and experience our outstanding Monroe County Parks.” In addition, Monroe County 4-H has scheduled a free Conifer Clamber in Black Creek Park for Saturday, March 19. By participating in this event, youth can complete one of the five challenges. More information and registration are available at www.tinyurl.com/coniferclamber. What’s more, participating youth can aid their missions by borrowing Nature Backpacks from a Rochester-Monroe County Library branch. To qualify for the prize drawings, missions must be complete by April 1. For full information, including the registration link and the downloadable Save the Snowpeople mission guide, visit http://monroe.cce.cornell.edu/events/2022/01/01/save-thesnowpeople-challenge. Hilton-Parma Senior Center offerings The Hilton-Parma Senior Center is located in the Hilton Community Center, 59 Henry Street, right in the village, and has a lot to offer community seniors. Those looking to enjoy nutritious meals, good company, and a friendly atmosphere are welcome to dine at “The Hilton” Senior Center as it partners with Monroe County to provide weekly lunches on Tuesdays. A reservation for lunch needs to be made in advance by calling 392-9030. For those who are interested, Bingo follows the lunch program from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Bingo participants are encouraged to bring loose change. Two different types of transportation service are available for seniors residing within the Town of Parma, allowing for greater independence: •Center Transportation - Town drivers are available to transport seniors within Parma to and from the Senior Center on Tuesdays for lunch and Bingo and for monthly Evening Meals for a cost of $2 round-trip. •Shopping Transportation - Wednesdays are set aside for transporting seniors living within the Town of Parma to pre-determined destinations. Locations include Walmart, Aldi, The Christmas Tree Shop, Ollie’s, Dollar Tree, Goodwill/Salvation Army, and more for the cost of $2 round-trip.

The transport leaves the Senior Center at 9:30 a.m. to pick up those who are signed up for that week and takes them to shop at the weekly destination. The group then goes to a diner for lunch afterwards, with everyone paying for their own meal. Another program that occurs once a month, typically on the last Wednesday of the month, is the Evening Meal and a Show. The program offers a fun evening of food, entertainment, and friends. The next evening meal is on March 23. It will be a corned beef dinner and feature Irish entertainer Peg Dolan. The dinners are catered by Foster’s Restaurant. Space is limited and the reservation deadline is Friday, March 18. Other programs offered at the Hilton-Parma Senior Center include crafts, card games, mahjong, euchre, jigsaw puzzle swap, film Wednesdays, and chair yoga (starting March 8). Program information can be found in the Senior Center Newsletter which can be emailed to those who request it. Hard copies are also available and can be mailed or picked up at the Senior Center office. For more information or to register, contact the staff at the Hilton-Parma Senior Center at 392-9030. “We had our LG mini split fail, and Aire Serv did an amazing job fixing it. The technicians were professional, kind and very knowledgeable. The office staff was very helpful. There were some problems with the warranty, but everyone worked to get it covered, and they made it happen. Great company, and I highly recommend them” - Paul A. “I purchased this house about 5 years ago, and found Aire Serv had put in the heater. I have used them to maintain the heater as well as the AC. My heater stopped working and they were here the same day. After they got the parts they were able to quickly fix the heater first thing the next day. The service guy, Rick went above and beyond. I have always had great service with this company” - Linda V.

Heide Reinschmidt (right), a member of the Kiwanis Club of Spencerport, presents a check to Jennyrae Brongo, Founder and CEO of Homesteads for Hope following an update to the Kiwanis Club on their more than five years of operation. The donation represents funds raised by the Kiwanis Club from events held over the past year. For more about Homesteads for Hope, go to https://www.facebook.com/HomesteadsforHope/. Upcoming fundraising events planned by the Kiwanis Club include a pulled pork dinner on Sunday, March 27, at the Spencerport Exempts Club, the annual Silent Auction in cooperation with the Ogden Farmers’ Library in May, and the second annual Scavenger Hunt/Road Rally in June. The Kiwanis Club is also glad that Spencerport Canal Days will be returning this year on July 30 and 31. They will be there with their hot dog stand that has been part of Canal Days since its first year in 1982. Provided information and photo

politically speaking Candidate for Hilton Village Mayor

Maureen Spindler My name is Maureen Spindler and I am excited to be running for Mayor of Hilton. Voting is on Tuesday, March 15, at the Community Center from noon until 9 p.m. I am truly an independent candidate. I do not belong to any political party. I would like to see a more friendly, open village government. I plan to reintroduce the Village newsletter as an interactive e-document to better hear neighbors’ views on Village issues. I’m also anxious to spruce up Main Street and help keep a strong business base. I will continue to work towards having affordable senior housing in the Village. The Village is a great place for families and retirees alike to enjoy shops, restaurants and services close by. We all enjoy saying ‘Hi’ to everyone as we walk down the street. The friendly atmosphere is one of the best parts of living in Hilton. You may know me as “The Village Photographer.” My studio opened in Canning Street Square in 1980 and was there until the memorable fire in 2000. My studio was most recently located on Mariah Street, behind the library. I now do on-location work only. Perhaps I have photographed your children at one of our preschools or dance school. I now work at Genesee Community College in Batavia as a photographer/videographer. I have served on the Hilton Economic Development Committee, the Library Board, and on the Hilton Applefest Board, of which I am a founding member. I have lived in Hilton for over 40 years. I am married to my college sweetheart, Paul. We have three grown children and a new grandson. Maureen Spindler Candidate for Hilton Village Mayor

Opinion An “honest debate” Doug Beach wrote in a letter printed in Westside News (February 27) that I don’t want an “honest debate.” So, let us have an honest debate. My letter (Westside News, February 20) was in support of the bail reform law which sought to correct the injustice of imprisonment before conviction. Before the law was passed there were numerous studies that showed there was no increase in recidivism and no lack of court appearances. Studies, for example, in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Buffalo (“Evaluating the Impact of Eliminating Prosecutorial Request for Cash Bail,” “New Jersey Report to the Governor and Legislator 2018 report New Jersey Court study”). The Buffalo News editorial (12/27/19) stated: “In fact, the change in the law will benefit the cause of justice while reducing cost. And if Flynn’s (Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn) experience carries forward, it will do so without creating a serious risk of increases in crime or no-shows at subsequent court dates.” Laws are manmade and thus not perfect. So after the law was passed, what was the result? Crime has increased, but was that the result of the bail reform law? There could be lots of reasons for this increase, so studies have been conducted to determine the effect of bail reform on crime. A recent study out of University of California and Cornell University (An Empirical Evaluation of the Impact of New York’s Bail Reform on Crime Using Synthetic Controls, 11/16/21), reported: “Our findings, including placebo checks and other robustness checks, show that for assault, theft, and drug crimes, there is no significant impact of bail reform on crime; for burglary and robbery, we similarly have null findings but the synthetic control is also more variable so these are deemed less conclusive.” To date, I can find no studies linking the bail reform law to increase in crime. Congressman Chris Jacobs and State Senator Robert Ortt are claiming the bail reform law is the cause of the increase in crime, without any evidence. Crime is an emotional issue as we all want safe streets and communities. Claiming that some law is a cause of crime, without evidence, is fear-mongering; it is a way of controlling the population. It also creates bad policies and laws. We need to hold our representatives to a higher standard. William Fine Clarkson

What is nitrogen and why is it important? by Kristina Gabalski As gardeners, you’ve probably heard about plant macronutrients like phosphorus, potassium, and nitrogen. But how much do you really know about the importance of nitrogen, in particular, for growing healthy vegetables and other garden plants? Nitrogen has a major effect on the growth and yield of crop plants. It gives a dark green color to plants and increases the growth of leaves as well as stimulates early growth.
