Local resident participates in NBA Assistant Coaches Program by Tami Raco

Daniel Dunne, a 30-year Greece resident, started playing basketball when he was 14 years old. His life long love of the sport led to his dream of participating in the famous NBA Assistant Coaches Program. The program helps retired NBA, WNBA and G League players pursue coaching opportunities, at various levels, by assisting former players in their transition into coaching careers. The program began in 1989, and has helped more than 200 retired professional basketball players with potential coaching careers. The multi-faceted training program is designed to provide retired players experiences in hands-on coaching, scouting, software training and professional development, so that they can go on to be a successful coach at the highest level. “It basically teaches the nuts and bolts needed to be a NBA or G League Assistant Coach,” Dunne said. Dunne was selected as one of four observers in the 2021 program. He was the oldest participant in the group by twenty years and the only one from New York. “I was the geezer of the group,” he chuckled. Dunne was selected for this opportunity based on his qualifications from his extensive lifelong basketball experience and successes. His start in basketball began on Long Island when he was an 8th grader struggling to pass math. His math

teacher, who was also the boys basketball coach, said to the 6 foot 4 inches, 14 year old Dunne, “If you want to pass math you need to play basketball.” Dunne took the opportunity to pass math and played for the first time. The following year he was playing varsity. Due to his passion, and emerging talents in basketball, Dunne’s father enrolled him to participate in a summer basketball camp at Long Island Lutheran. This led him to switching schools that fall, in his sophomore year, to play for Long Island Lutheran, which was advanced both academically, and in basketball. The move then brought Dunne a full scholarship to attend college and play basketball at Seton Hall. He was 6 foot 10 inches when he graduated high school. Dunne completed college at Seton Hall with his double major in History and American studies. He went on to pursue his Masters degree that brought him to Western New York when he was offered the opportunity to teach, play and coach while attending Niagara University. “I fell in love with Western New York once I saw it,” he said. “It was amazing to see the horses, deer and wide open areas and just how friendly the people were here.’’ Dunne’s basketball career led him to play five seasons professionally in Puerto Rico. His team won the Superior Basketball League Championship in 1978, and Dunne was named to their Olympic Team in 1980.

Dunne settled in the Rochester area where he worked as a Social Studies teacher for Rochester City Schools from 1989-2019 at Monroe Middle School. He married and moved to Greece to raise two daughters here. “I liked Greece because it is close to everything,” he said. During his 30-year teaching career, Dunne continued with his basketball passion coaching all ages, from pre-teen girls to men’s professional. “The love of coaching is like a virus, once you get it you can’t get rid of it.” His coaching experiences include head varsity coach for girls at Monroe High School, coaching his daughter’s AAU team Rochester Revolution, college level at Niagara University, Molloy College, and Brockport State, NBA G/D League level, as well as professionally at the Canadian National Basketball Draft and as Assistant Coach with the Rochester Razorsharks. In 1992 Dunne started a player agency called Full Court International. In this capacity he works as a certified player representative, assisting with development, coaching and scouting. He became the Regional Scout for the Harlem Globe Trotters and pro teams in Puerto Rico, Canada, and Saudi Arabia. Despite all of Dunne’s years and experiences in coaching, the NBA Assistant Coaches program was a once in a lifetime experience for him. He describes the insight and skills received participating in this program as “intense.” He said coaching is, “Like an iceberg 30% visible and 70% you can’t see because it’s underwater.” Dunne explained his experience in the NBA Assistant Coaches Training Program as intimi-

dating, shocking and the ultimate level of coaching training. “I got to see all the hats a coach of that level has to wear and it was eye opening.” During the six month program, Dunne worked with Butch Carter who leads the training and met Patrick Ewing, Jr. which was nostalgic for Dunne, as he played his father back in his Seton Hall days. The program had advanced technology, which was rigorous for Dunne to learn. “I surprised myself with how much I learned and grew at my age,” he said. Dunne self describes as a “teacher at heart” and looks forward to using all that he has learned to help players get better and help them advance by adding to their tool box of skills. He said, “You are never too old to follow your dreams.” To learn more about Daniel Dunne visit www.fullcourtinternational.com

Get out & grow! Winter seed sowing

by Kristina Gabalski

by Kristina Gabalski I’ve been seeing more and more about winter seed sowing, an alternative to staring garden seeds inside in preparation for the upcoming growing season. According to Penn State University Extension, winter sowing is the process of planting seeds outdoors in a container during the winter months. All you need is seed-starting medium and a minigreenhouse you create from an old plastic milk jug. The semi-opaque jugs that allow light to penetrate work well, or you can experiment with other recyclable containers you have on hand. Monroe County 4-H receives funding to support community driven 4-H Clubs The Monroe County 4-H Youth Development program recently received a $75,000 grant from The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation to support Growing Sustainable 4-H Clubs. The project will focus on formation of clubs and will provide support for social emotional learning and youth mental health. The Mother Cabrini Health Foundation is a private, nonprofit organization with the mission to improve the health and well-being of vulnerable New Yorkers, bolster the health outcomes of targeted communities, eliminate barriers to care, and bridge gaps in health services. Named in memory of a tireless advocate for immigrants, children, and the poor, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation provides flexible support for new and innovative approaches that enhance health and wellness across New York State. For information, visit https://www.cabrinihealth.org/. Throughout the next year, the project will work to support partnerships with youth-serving community organizations throughout Monroe County. Working with community partners, community members, and youth in the community, the Monroe County 4-H Youth Development Program will hold space for people to voice their concerns around educational, emotional, and social barriers for youth. Utilizing a needs-based assessment, the 4-H team alongside community partners will set priorities and determine criteria for solutions that will create a solid framework for the startup of sustainable 4-H clubs. 4-H clubs will be formed at community organizations and supported by the 4-H team. Funding from the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation will allow the 4-H team to provide supplies for each new club, modeling of 4-H activities

using the positive youth development model, and continued training for community partners. The Growing Sustainable 4-H Clubs project will support preliminary conversations, initial formation and foundation building of community driven sustainable 4-H clubs. Following completion of the project, a 4-H Club Coordinator staff position will ensure that community partners continue to receive the support that they need for ongoing success. With sustainable and accessible 4-H clubs throughout Monroe County, youth can have access to the benefits of being a 4-H participant for years to come. “It is a thrill to offer the Growing Sustainable 4-H Clubs project in Monroe County. The 4-H Team believes deeply in the benefits of 4-H participation using the Positive Youth Development and Youth Thriving Models. During this time of public health crises, youth will benefit from their experiences in 4-H,” shares Susan Coyle, 4-H Program Leader at Cornell Cooperative Extension Monroe County. The Monroe County 4-H Program is offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension to the youth of Monroe County. 4-H is a worldwide youth development program open to all youth, ages five to 19, who want to have fun, learn new skills, and explore the world. In return, youth who participate in 4-H find a supportive environment and opportunities for hands-on or “experiential” learning about things that interest them. NYFB releases 2022 state legislative priorities New York Farm Bureau released its 2022 state legislative priorities to address the needs and challenges of the diverse agricultural community in New York State. This included reaction and next steps to address the Farm Labor Wage Board decision to lower the overtime threshold from 60 to 40 hours over the next decade. New York Farm Bureau President David Fisher, who is on the Department of Labor’s Farm Labor Wage Board, expressed his serious concerns with the 2-1 decision passed January 29 that will begin dropping the threshold in 2024. He said it will be extremely difficult for farmers and farmworkers to absorb and will change the face of New York agriculture. He also questioned why more of the submitted video testimony was not played for the full wage board to hear and consider. “In the end, the decision was made with little deliberation or reflection of the testimony. I would have hoped my fellow board members would have considered more of the impacts that this will have on agriculture,” said President Fisher. About 70-percent of the testimony was in favor of keeping the overtime threshold at 60. Many farmers and farmworkers testified that anything lower would hurt farmworkers. It will mean fewer hours, less income, and force those wanting to work more to find a second job or leave New York State for employment. New York State can’t afford to lose its skilled workforce. Fisher also expressed how this will negatively impact farms operating under thin profit margins as well as New York’s food system and access to local food. “We saw how important that was in the pandemic for

consumers and food banks. We heard testimony that labor will be too expensive, and hours will be limited so there won’t be that excess product to give away,” he said. New York Farm Bureau is asking Gov. Hochul to find an alternative to the wage board’s recommendation. The organization appreciates that she is looking for a creative solution by proposing a tax credit to offset overtime pay, but many farmers have expressed concern over having to cash flow the high overtime costs before they could see any income from the tax credit, potentially a year later. New York Farm Bureau is asking for more discussion around this with the governor and legislature. “So much is at stake. This is a priority issue for New York Farm Bureau and all of agriculture. We have worked closely with our partners in the Grow NY Farms coalition and will continue to fight forward together,” said Fisher. The NYFB’s other legislative priorities include: supporting investment in new meat, vegetable, fruit, and seafood processing facilities in New York; supporting legislation allowing direct to consumer shipping for all New York-produced farm beverages, including beer, cider, and distillates; opposing Extended Producer Responsibility legislation that doesn’t require consumer responsibility for packaging they receive. Go to https://bit.ly/3GfNc0C to view the full list of NYFB State Priorities. “In the end, it is imperative that we all work together to expand opportunities and capitalize on what we do well in New York. We have one of the most diverse agricultural sectors in the country. It is worth it to each of us to maintain that strong connection to food and farm production,” said President Fisher. Hawley opposes decision to lower overtime threshold for farm workers Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,IBatavia), a former farmer and member of the Assembly Committee on Agriculture, expressed grave concern following a 2-1 decision by the Farm Laborers Wage Board to implement a 40 hour overtime threshold for farm laborers in New York state. Hawley has joined farmers and advocates from across the state over the last several months to speak out against this proposal. He argues that since farms operate on schedules that are at the mercy of the weather and other unpredictable factors, lowering the threshold would prove fatal for farms that barely turn a profit when paying their laborers under the existing 60-hour threshold. “Farm operators and farm laborers alike have been more united than ever in oppos-

ing this mandate, but sadly it seems their voices were ignored, and I now fear the decision will come at the cost of countless multi-generational family businesses who will now have no choice but to cease operations,” said Hawley. “Being someone with origins in upstate New York, I sincerely hope that Governor Hochul will be able to put aside her partisanship and stop this policy’s implementation for the sake of our farmers, families, and rural economies throughout the state. For the millions of people who love everything about agriculture as we know it here in upstate New York, it would be truly tragic if our local farms became nothing more than memories of a better time.” Provided information

Feed the Birds by T.R. Hendrick Well, here we are again in the bowels of a Western, New York winter. If you’re an outdoor person, this time of year can be torture. I know skiers and meteorologists love this s… snow. Sorry, I couldn’t get the word out. Why, what did you think I was going to say? But nobody likes the cold except maybe ice fishermen when they need the ice to thicken for safe fishing. For those of us who feel trapped in the house this time of year, I have found a little hobby that helps make it a tiny bit more bearable. I feed wild birds. They are interesting to watch and try to identify, and the grandkids enjoy watching them as well. Also, it helps get the birds through what is starting to feel like a long winter. I hesitate to write about this topic as I’m not very knowledgeable on the best ways to feed birds, but what the heck, that hasn’t stopped me on any of my other columns. Why change now. I am far from an expert, but I have picked up a few things I’ve learned the hard way. The first thing to keep in mind before you get started is you need to make it a commitment. If you start feeding, you shouldn’t stop until the birds gain access to the bare ground again. Once they get used to getting their daily food for survival at your feeder, if you stop right in the middle of a hard winter, it could be deadly to them. Next, I suggest buying the biggest feeder you can afford. The less you have to go out and fill it, the better. If you need to put up a free-standing pole to hold the feeder, bite the bullet and buy the squirrel cone that goes around the pole. I’ve tried everything for years to keep the squirrels out, but they are like furry Ninjas when it comes to getting into the feeder. It’s not that I mind feeding the squirrels. I’d be happy to if they shared, but no, they have to get right into the feeder and keep all the birds away. Then they dump all the other seeds on the ground to get at the black oil sunflower seeds, making a mess and emptying the feeder in no time. The second thing to remember is that stored bird seed does attract other unwanted critters, so stock your birdseed in a steel can so no mice can nibble into the bag and make an all-you-can-eat situation in your garage or shed. I use a 55-gallon galvanized garbage can to store my birdseed these days; no mice chewing through that baby. This also allows me to mix the food if I want to add more sunflower seeds to the mixture. Raccoons will visit the feeder on a warm night and make a mess. I know raccoons hibernate, but they will come out looking for a snack on warm nights. If you live in the Southern Tier of our state, you could even have a visit from a black bear when the weather warms. I never understood why a 150-pound bear could find anything worth his effort in a bird feeder, but you hear about it happening all the time. You would think they would stick to pic-a-nic baskets. Also, keep in mind where you place the feeder as the seed that hits the ground will attract rodents after dark. By putting it out in the yard a ways, I have found that the mice have no cover and won’t venture out into the wide-open as they are afraid of getting picked off by a predator.

Valentine’s Day

Feeding wild birds can help get you through these winter months. Photo by T.R. Hendrick Another thing you can add to your bird banquet is suet. It will attract woodpeckers and blue jays as they are carnivores. Suet is hardened animal fat with seeds mixed in. You can make your own by saving any grease from your frying pan in a small container the shape of a suet cage. Store it in the refrigerator, and it will get solid enough to place in a suet holder out at the feeder. Stores like Country Max have a variety of different seeds to attract different birds. If you go with the basic economy birdseed mix, more fillers are added, so you get less legit bird food for your buck with the cheap stuff. Well, that’s the extent of my bird feeding expertise. I suggest giving it a try. It can cheer you up when the weather is getting you down. We even put our grandbaby, Sebastian, in is his jolly jumper right in front of a low window in our living room so he can see the bird feeder just outside. The birds coming and going catch his eye and keep him interested for a good long time while he is hopping and bopping. My only problem with this hobby is for many years, come spring, I’ve planted any leftover birdseed in a fertile garden and watered it every day, and still, I have yet to see one bird grow. Must be you have to use fresh birdseed.

Hilton eighth graders share key ideas from the books they love to read Eighth graders in Michael Billotti’s English class at Merton Williams Middle School are working on “one pagers” to visually share key ideas and information from the books they are reading independently. Using a template, the students draw a border that represents the key themes. In the upper left corner go a quotation and image that represent the most important theme. In the lower left corner, students show the author’s style of writing and lastly, in the lower right corner students illustrate the connections between the themes and ideas with what is going on in the world today. Sweden planning and building update The engineering firm Passero Associates presented an informal plan for a Royal Car Wash at the Sweden Planning Board meeting on January 24. The site of the proposed business is on the south side of Fourth Section Road, across from the west end of Wegmans plaza. A formal application has not yet been made. The Planning Board also discussed three-month extensions for three solar farm projects previously approved (Kreher, Mantisi, and Wolf Solar Farms). In January, the building department issued a permit for the construction of a single-family home on West Sweden Road and a commercial permit for renovations of the interior of ESL Bank. At its organizational meeting on January 3, the Town Board made the building inspector position full-time. The building inspector has traditionally been a part-time position in Sweden, however, increased code enforcement concerns, including those around zombie houses, led the board to the decision to increase the department hours.
