Opportunity to honor suffragists extended To celebrate the centennial of the passage of the 19th amendment, The National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites (NCWHS) created the National Votes for Women Trail (NVWT) to be an interactive searchable mobile-friendly database for researchers, educators, and heritage tourists. The William G. Pomeroy Foundation took the virtual NVWT and made it a physical trail by offering historic markers to places of special significance to the suffrage story. To further expand this body of knowledge for future generations, Pomeroy has extended its Women’s Suffrage Marker nomination deadline to January 15, 2021. The Pomeroy Foundation, which is a private, grant-making foundation based in Syracuse, has already provided fully funded grants for markers at 68 locations throughout the United States. The NCWHS has also received an additional 179 marker nominations. The deadline extension to January 15 will provide organizations with additional time to finalize and submit potential candidates. “We have seen tremendous interest in the National Votes for Women Trail from communities all over the country. Our map has over 1700 sites. We are beyond grateful to the Pomeroy Foundation for their generous support. By installing historic markers at key sites around the country, we are creat-

ing the lasting monuments that suffrage crusaders of every ethnicity, gender and background so richly deserve. We stand on their shoulders,” stated NCWHS President Marsha Weinstein. “The Pomeroy Foundation is proud of the success of the partnership with the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites on this important effort to develop the National Votes for Women Trail and commemorate the 19th Amendment centennial,” says Paula Miller, Executive Director of the Pomeroy Foundation. “Helping to preserve and celebrate history is a core mission of the Foundation.” Anyone with an idea for a historic marker to commemorate women’s suffrage in their community is asked to contact their NVWT State Coordinator to begin the nomination process, https://ncwhs.org/votes-forwomen-trail/state-coordinators, or contact the NCWHS directly at https://ncwhs. org/about/contact-us/. Municipalities, nonprofit academic institutions and 501(c)(3) organizations are especially encouraged to submit a nomination. Pomeroy Foundation signage grants are fully funded and cover the entire cost of a marker, pole, and shipping. The local partner is responsible for installation of the marker. Provided information

The Spencerport Fire Department was among the many police, fire, and emergency medical services out on December 2 for the first “Good Night Lights” of the holiday season at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester. First responders from across the area flashed the lights on their vehicles and waved goodnight to young hospital patients. “Good Night Lights” continues each Wednesday at 6 p.m. through the month of December. sports & recreation Churchville-Chili senior commits to Canisius College lacrosse team

Senior Patrick Mitchell (center) celebrates his signed commitment to play for Canisius College with his parents, Gina and Brad Mitchell.

westsidenewsny.com

Churchville-Chili High School varsity lacrosse player Patrick Mitchell has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for Canisius College’s NCAA Division I Golden Griffins lacrosse team in Buffalo. The high school held a small signing ceremony on November 23, attended by Mitchell and his family, along with Athletic Director Michael Murray and Coach Cubby Chalmers. The midfielder has been on the Saints varsity lacrosse team since his freshman year. Mitchell was named first-team AllCounty in his sophomore year, the 2019 season. He had 34 goals and 26 assists, totaling 61 points. He also had 66 ground balls, which is 10th all-time in ChurchvilleChili school history for most ground balls in one season. Athletic Director Michael Murray said, “Patrick’s junior season would have been this past spring in 2020, but it was fully canceled due to COVID-19. Had that season been played, he would have been on track for similar or better numbers than he had in tenth grade. This would have landed him in the top 10 all-time in school history for most career assists. If he had played his junior and senior seasons in full, he would likely have cracked our top 10 in several categories.”

Patrick Mitchell (left) with his Churchville-Chili lacrosse coach Cubby Chalmers. Mitchell and his coach are looking forward to a busy senior season this coming spring and an exciting college career with the Canisius Golden Griffins. Canisius College is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and its athletic programs compete at the highest level as a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I institution.
