Churchville-Chili teacher named NYSATA Regional Art Educator of the Year Churchville-Chili art teacher Anne Clancy has been named Region 2 Art Educator of the Year for 2020 by the New York State Art Teachers Association (NYSATA). Clancy teaches students in grades K-4 at Churchville Elementary School and also leads an Advanced Studio Art class for eighth-graders at the Middle School. Churchville-Chili Director of Fine Arts Jeffrey Smith said, “Anne’s ability to both motivate her students and inspire her colleagues makes her an invaluable asset to our department and district. The thought, care and detail that Anne puts into her teaching is evident in the incredible work her students generate, the strong relationships that she builds, and the meaningful connections that she makes. During this unprecedented time, I have been inspired and motivated by Anne’s ability and willingness to go above and beyond, to try new things, and to adapt and change with a positive attitude.” Churchville Elementary music teacher Judy Dubin said, “Anne is a passionate advocate for art education, and is strong in her conviction that making art is fundamental to the development of all children. Her

“It is the student artists that inspire me,” she said. “I love to watch the expressions on their faces when they discover something new, the way they think, plan and arrange their artwork and put it all together to make it their own, and especially the way they want to share about their experience and why what they made matters.” “I hope that I am encouraging my students to think like artists and develop their ideas to communicate with others in a visual way. I hope that they will want to learn about the world of art, and will develop a deep and meaningful understanding of our world and how art is the thread that connects us all together. I hope that they will grow to love art as I do.” The NYSATA Regional Art Educator of the Year designation rewards commitment to excellence in art education and honors exemplary teaching, strong advocacy and dedication to advancing the arts to students, school, region (there are 10 regions within New York) and state. Visit https://www.nysata.org/ for information. Provided information. Photos by Anne Clancy.

warmth and boundless energy create a caring, nurturing and exciting classroom environment where students love to be. Throughout the year, Anne opens her art room to our faculty after school to spend time together creating projects, encouraging her colleagues to nurture their inner artist. She works tirelessly to help make our school a joyful place to be, and to make each adult and child feel important and special.” Clancy has been teaching art at the district since 2008. She holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art from Nazareth College, and has taught art in both Rochester Catholic Diocese and Rochester City schools during her career. She is a member of Region 2 NYSATA and has been active in advancing art education in the area. Her personal artwork focuses on mixed media, fused glass and painting.

Most new COVID-19 cases coming from households and small gatherings New York’s latest contact tracing data shows 70 percent of new COVID-19 cases originate from households and small gatherings. As the number of new cases continues to grow in Monroe County and nationwide, New Yorkers are encouraged to avoid gatherings to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. “It’s not just mass gatherings causing the spread anymore. The virus is now literally spreading in households,” Governor Cuomo said. “When you eliminate other options for socialization, people will shift their behavior and begin joining together in their homes. We are seeing the impacts of that now, with a significant number of cases originating in households and small gatherings. I know you may think, ‘I’m in my house with my family and with my friends so this is my safe zone,’ but that just is simply not the case anymore. As we move forward into the winter, addressing living room spread will be one of the biggest challenges in the fight against COVID-19, and we can do it, but only if New Yorkers stay smart.”

With cases rising locally, avoiding small gatherings and practicing safe behaviors like wearing masks, washing hands, and socially distancing, is more important than ever. The Governor also recently announced the state’s plan for combating COVID-19 this winter. Developed in consultation with global public health experts, local governments, and other stakeholders, the plan builds off the lessons learned during the past nine months to anticipate and prepare for an expected increase in COVID cases and hospitalizations over the holiday season. Specifically, the winter plan consists of five targeted strategies focused on mitigating the spread of the virus and bolstering New York State hospital preparedness including: continuing and strengthening New York’s targeted micro-cluster strategy while managing hospital capacity to enhance and equalize care; increasing and balancing testing resources and availability; keeping schools open safely; preventing viral spread from small gatherings; and

operationalizing an equitable and safe vaccination program. New York State will receive an initial delivery of enough COVID-19 vaccine doses for 170,000 New Yorkers. If all safety and efficacy approvals are granted by the federal government, the state expects to receive the vaccines – which were created by Pfizer – on December 15. The state expects additional allocations of vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna later this month. Provided information

Brockport bridge closing for repairs The New York State Department of Transportation will temporarily close the Park Avenue/Fayette Street bridge over the Erie Canal in Brockport on Tuesday, December 8, to rehabilitate the structure. The bridge will remain closed for approximately four months. Construction will include the replacement of the flooring system to strengthen the bridge in anticipation of increased traffic volumes during the replacement of the nearby Route 19 (Main Street) lift bridge, which will require a long-term closure beginning in 2022. During this winter closure there will not be a detour posted, though motorists may use the Main Street lift bridge to cross over the canal. All construction activities

are weather dependent and subject to change based on conditions. For real-time travel information, motorists should call 511 or visit www.511NY.org or the mobile site at m.511ny. org, New York State’s official traffic and travel information source. Provided information

Sweden Town Park offers winter activities The Sweden Town Park does not close for the winter season; the lodge and the dog park are as popular in the winter as they are the summer. The park is open dawn to dusk with lodge hours extended until 10 p.m. For information about renting the lodge or making use of other park facilities, call the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center at 431-0090. Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) and Sen. Robert Ortt (R,C,I-North Tonawanda) announced the passage of their legislation which designates a portion of New York State Route 31 in the town of Albion as the “Charles W. Howard Memorial Highway.” Howard was a lifelong resident of Albion, nationally recognized as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Santa Claus for 18 years, and founder of the world’s first Santa Claus school. Hawley and Ortt were thrilled to honor Howard (Santa Claus) for his achievements and dedication to the community. “Mr. Howard was known for his hard work, his love for community, and his jolly spirit; he represented the best any New Yorker Charles W. Howard. Photo could hope to achieve,” said from santaclausschool.com. Hawley. “With this highway dedication and the committed partnership of Senator Ortt, Western New York has finally given the man the recognition and reverence he deserves. This holiday season and year-round, we can all learn from Charles about how to be good neighbors, how to work to spread cheer and joy and how to live life to the fullest.” Provided information

Monroe County municipalities to receive CARES Act funding It was announced on November 25 that Monroe County will provide local municipalities and fire districts with more than $9 million in federal CARES Act funding to reimburse them for COVID-19-related expenses. “As we all know, the COVID-19 pandemic has not only had a devastating impact on our public health but has also increased the need for vital local government services,” said County Executive Adam Bello. “It’s always been my goal to help our local government partners as we work together to fight COVID-19 and keep our community safe. I am hopeful that this additional funding for our partner governments will help mitigate their unexpected costs and buffer any impact on their budgets. The financial weight of this pandemic should not fall on our local residents and taxpayers.” In total, Monroe County expects to distribute $9 million in federal CARES Act funding to towns, villages, fire districts,

and the City of Rochester. Nearly $5.4 million will be distributed to towns and villages; $3.4 million to the City; and about $90,000 to fire districts. The funds will be used to offset public safety, public health, human services, and other costs incurred while responding to the COVID-19 public health emergency. “Local governments throughout America have been glad to do their part in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in order to help protect the wellbeing of our constituents,” said Irondequoit Supervisor Dave Seeley. “We have done this knowing the impact of the virus on our fiscal situation. And while, just like every business and family in Irondequoit, we have tightened our belts at Town Hall, I am nonetheless grateful to County Executive Bello for working to provide this valuable funding. It will protect our property taxpayers and ensure we are still investing in that which allows our government to best serve those taxpayers.” Provided information

tary School. Edwards lives in the district in Kent. His three children all graduated from the district. “While I’m excited about the new opportunity, there’s also a big part of me that’s sad to be saying goodbye to such an amazing team,” said Edwards. “I can’t tell you how much I’ve enjoyed our time working together, and how much I value the relationships we have built over the past four and a half years.” Under his leadership, Byron-Bergen Junior-Senior High School has been named to US News and World Report Best High Schools in the Nation for the last two years. Additionally, Edwards resurrected an agriculture and FFA program in the district after the program’s 40-year hiatus and worked to increase the amount of advanced college courses offered at the high school, including AP and Genesee Community College ACE Courses. He also implemented a program for trauma, illness, and grief in the district to address the social and emotional needs of staff, students and families. Provided information and photo

Make healthier holiday choices The holidays are often filled with traditions that include some of our favorite meals and foods. As you celebrate, think of little changes you can make this holiday season to create healthier meals and active days. Here are a few tips to help make your holiday dishes a little healthier.

Bake healthier Use recipes with unsweetened applesauce or mashed ripe bananas instead of butter. Try cutting the amount of sugar listed in recipes in half. Use spices to add flavor, such as cinnamon, allspice, or nutmeg instead of salt.

Enjoy all the food groups Prepare whole-grain crackers with hummus as an appetizer; add unsalted nuts and black beans to a green-leaf salad; include fresh fruit at the dessert table; use low-fat milk instead of heavy cream in your casseroles. Share healthier options during your holiday meal.

Enjoy leftovers Create delicious new meals with your leftovers. Add turkey to soups or salads. Use extra veggies in omelets, sandwiches, or stews. The possibilities are endless.

Make sure your protein is lean Turkey; roast beef; fresh ham; beans; and some types of fish, such as cod or flounder, are lean protein choices. Trim fat when cooking meats. Go easy on the sauces and gravies – they can be high in saturated fat and sodium.

Time to send those holiday packages The United States Postal Service plans for peak season all year. And while customers may not think about the holidays until the season is upon them, it’s important to know how to properly ship all the gifts on your list. Simple planning will help prevent injuries to Postal Service employees and customers. It will also help keep packages from being returned to sender if the contents are not allowed to be mailed or the packages don’t follow size and weight requirements. Shipping restrictions There are guidelines to keep certain hazardous, restricted, and perishable items out of the mail – both domestically and internationally. The regulations on shipping eligible hazardous, restricted or perishable items safely through the Postal Service can be found at https://pe.usps.com/text/ pub52/welcome.htm. Of course, you can always check with your local Post Office location for more information. At the most basic level, there are items you can’t send through the mail. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to, liquor, ammunition, explosives, mercury (including items which contain mercury such as thermometers), and gasoline. There are also restricted items that have specific guidelines to follow if you plan to send them through the mail, including alcohol (any kind, including hand sanitizer), perfumes/colognes, aerosols, and lithium metal batteries (non-rechargeable/rechargeable, used to power flashlights or laptops). Reusing boxes? Maybe that’s not the best idea It’s suggested to never reuse boxes as they can weaken in the shipping process. But if you decide to reuse, make sure any labels or markings are removed or completely

covered over, especially if the box you choose to reuse has labels or markings associated with hazardous, prohibited, or restricted materials. Package size and weight requirements Did you know that there are size and weight restrictions for packages sent through the Postal Service? The price you pay to ship items depends on the shape and weight of your package. In some cases, oddly shaped packages, such as tubes, are charged a higher price because those pieces must be processed manually. Packages sent within the United States can’t weigh more than 70 pounds and can’t measure more than 108 inches total in length and around the widest part of the package. If you are sending items internationally or to APO, FPO, and DPO locations, lower maximum weight or size standards may be applied, and the weight varies based on the destination country. More information can be found at usps.com. All packages must be large enough to hold the required delivery and return addresses, mailing labels, and postage on the outside of the package. Never over-pack a box, which can cause the sides or the seams to bulge or break, as well as cause injury to postal employees. Regardless of the contents, mail and packages weighing more than 10 ounces and/or are more than a half-inch thick cannot be dropped into a collection box or left for a carrier to pick up if you’re using stamps for postage. Instead, take them to a retail associate at your local Post Office. Avoid shipping issues by using the free Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express boxes available at your local Post Office, or order them online at usps.com. There are no extra markings to worry about covering up, the larger sizes can hold up to 70 pounds, and there are no odd shapes. Plus, you can ship for one flat rate, with tracking and basic insurance included (with some restrictions).

Contact-free package drop-off The U.S. Postal Service will offer contact-free drive-thru holiday package drop-off service at the Rochester Main Post Office, 1335 Jefferson Road, Rochester, on Mondays, December 7, 14, and 21, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The drivethru package drop-off service is for prepaid letters and packages only. No receipts will be provided. This is an outdoor, drive-thru event. USPS employees working the contact-free package drop-off service will adhere to social distancing and mask-wearing protocols. Mask-wearing and social distancing protocols are required for all drive-thru customers. Customers must remain in their vehicles. Additional holiday news and information, including all domestic, international, and military mailing and shipping deadlines, can be found at the Postal Service Holiday Newsroom, https://about.usps.com/ holidaynews/. OFC Creations offers winter performing arts programs OFC Creations recently announced the lineup for educational performing arts programs this winter. OFC’s educational programs are open to students ages four to 18 and are held at the new OFC Creations Theatre Center, 3450 Winton Place, Rochester. The new theatre center opened July 13 with 260 brand-new theatre seats, a 56-foot stage, new theatre curtains and drapes, a 100-person lobby and lounge for receptions, a 25 person green room for small classes and costume changes, and a soon-to-be-open second-floor dance studio. OFC served over 900 students between its summer and fall programming, with no COVID-related issues. Educational programs this winter have been expanded from past years to supplement reduced offerings at local schools. Programs take place weekday evenings and weekends and include titles like Annie Jr., A Wicked Christmas Carol, Little Shop of Horrors, and more. OFC is also running camps for students ages seven to 15 during school breaks with Legally Blonde in February and Descendants over spring break. Summer camps will be announced in December.

OFC Creations Dance School offerings begin in January with programs for children as young as three on up through adults. Genres include Tap, Musical Theater Dance, All Male Dance, Dance for Actors, and more. Safety precautions will continue for all programs, including spaced drop off and pick up times, keeping students

in groups of 15 to 20, wearing masks (especially while singing), as well as hand sanitizing stations and frequent hand washing. A full breakdown of safety precautions are constantly updated on OFC’s website. OFC Creations’ Executive Director, Eric Vaughn Johnson, is no stranger to educational arts programming. From 2013 to 2018, Johnson designed and spearheaded the RAPA’s School for Performing Arts, leading school year and summer intensives. Johnson also served as the artistic director of SNAP Musical Theater for four summers with casts of 80 children performing shows, including Hairspray and The Little Mermaid. “Many schools in the area are canceling their annual musical,” said Johnson. “For many reasons students are craving to be back on stage - whether it is to prepare for college auditions, grow public speaking skills, or just to escape the craziness of our current world, these students need a positive outlet.” Registration is now open for 2020 winter programs. Registration information and program details are available at www.OFCCreations.com. Provided information and photo

Opinion/Comments Chamber of Commerce Coalition encourages responsible practices to curb virus spread The Advocacy Coalition of Rochester Area Chambers (ACRAC), a group of chamber of commerce executives from throughout the Finger Lakes, is deeply concerned about the resurgence of COVID-19 in the Finger Lakes and Southern Tier Regions and its effects on our local businesses and economy. In that spirit, its leadership team released the following statement: “ACRAC is not interested in taking political sides on this issue but rather focusing on the health and well-being of our region. We believe that each of us has a role to play in helping to tackle the pandemic. “To avoid further business interruptions, ACRAC is asking our collective members and the community at large to observe social distancing, wear masks, disinfect regularly, and employ good hand hygiene. Employers should set

good examples for their employees, and employees should set good examples for customers. “Recovering from the impact of this virus continues to be a struggle. We will continue working with our Congressional Delegation to quickly pass an additional stimulus package that includes support for small business owners. So too will we continue to support efforts by state leaders to increase infrastructure for COVID-19 testing, speed up turnaround time for results, and improve contact tracing capabilities in an effort to efficiently curb the spread of COVID-19. “We commend the work of Governor Cuomo and his administration in working to keep infection rates among the lowest in the country and stand ready to assist in any way that we can.

“Business owners are rightly concerned about the increase in COVID-19 and the effects that another shut down will have on them, especially during the profitable holiday shopping season. Business owners must take every precaution to keep shoppers safe and remain open. “Residents can support their local businesses, economies, and communities not only by shopping locally, but also by following the recommendations set forth by the CDC, New York State, and our local county health departments. “Each of us must ask ourselves if we will be part of the solution, or part of the problem.” Leadership Team of the Advocacy Coalition of Rochester Area Chambers

labor or making purchases that keep others employed. Buying New York grown trees also helps reduce the possible transmission of pests from outside of the state. Trees are harvested in late fall after most insects have gone to sleep for the winter. There is a small possibility that insects may come along for a ride. If they are local insects, they are a short-term problem: swat them or put them outside. But trees from out of our area can potentially carry in new pests like the spotted lanternfly, which is currently plaguing Eastern Pennsylvania. For tips on keeping your tree fresh, as well as a handy review of the species of Christmas trees grown in NYS, check out the Christmas Tree Farmers Association of New York’s webpage, https://ctfany.org/. 2020 has been a tough year for all of us, and as we approach the winter months, we may lean into family traditions and familiar comforts. If a fresh-cut Christmas tree is one of your traditions, consider cutting or purchasing a tree from a local grower. You will help build local resilience and make your farmer’s winter a little merrier and brighter, too. Provided information. Photo by Jen Lerner.

The benefits of buying a local Christmas tree Fresh cut Christmas trees look and smell beautiful. But did you ever stop to consider how these and other agricultural products support local businesses and local economies? It’s hard to see the effect directly: you go out, cut your own tree, or pick out a tree from a local nursery or garden center. You see other households doing the same, just like selecting produce at the grocery store. But unlike produce at most grocery stores, locally grown Christmas trees are part of a shorter supply chain. Often the garden center has contracted to purchase the trees directly from the grower. Local Christmas tree growers depend on the sales of Christmas trees and other agricultural products to make a living. This income pays for labor, for the services of local contractors, for groceries, etc. The dollars we spend purchasing these trees trickle into a local New York State economy. For every dollar you spend, the money fans out into paying

Due to the rise of Coronavirus cases, there is an increasing demand for tests. Oak Orchard Health locations in Albion, Brockport, and Hornell provide testing for people with and without symptoms. At the Corfu, Batavia, and Alexander locations only people with symptoms who meet the criteria are being tested. To keep everyone safe, all testing is by appointment only. COVID-19 swab tests are available outdoors at Oak Orchard Health centers to ensure safety for patients and staff, however, those with symptoms are asked to call in advance for arrival instructions. Test results are typically back in three to five days but in some cases can take up to seven business days. “We want the community to know that Oak Orchard Health is here for them should they need a COVID-19 test. We have several testing locations and options including a free LetsGetChecked Self-Collection Kit,” said Dr. Mary Obear, MD, PhD, Chief Clinical Officer, Oak Orchard Health. Regarding payment, Oak Orchard starts by billing the insurance companies (co-pays may apply), and should it not be covered, offers a sliding fee scale discount based on family size and annual income. For questions or information, call 637-3905 ext. 221. The LetsGetChecked COVID-19 Self Collection Kits were purchased by Oak Orchard but are being given out free to Oak Orchard patients 18 years of age or older. They can be used at home but are in limited supply. The kits can be used when appropriate based on current testing guidelines. The test kit comes with a UPS next day air return shipping label to send your sample back to the lab. They aim to deliver results within 24 to 72 hours of your sample being received in their laboratory. For information, visit https://www.oakorchardhealth. org/covid19 or call 637-3905. Genesee Community College’s BEST Center (Business Employee Skills Training) has been awarded the New York College Apprenticeship Network (NYCAN) grant. The NYCAN grant, which totals $15,000, is a result of a partnership between The State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York State Department of Labor and is designed to focus on Advanced Manufacturing. “As the BEST Center’s primary focus is employee development and skills training, we are highly attuned to the workforce needs of our communities,” said Director of the BEST Center Dr. John McGowan. “The programs we offer are specifically designed to grow highly skilled and employable personnel to ensure the economic health of our region.” Genesee Community College’s BEST Center has begun to engage small, medium, and large employers to secure paid apprenticeships in high demand, competitive wage occupations throughout Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, and Wyoming counties, and - through online capabilities - far beyond. “The NYCAN grant allows us to support employers with Registered Apprenticeship programs, as well as assist current and future Registered Apprentices,” said McGowan. New York State has provided $9 million of funding for SUNY community colleges, to create one of the largest statewide public/private partnership apprenticeship programs in the country. At Genesee Community College, the BEST Center’s programs house the expertise and support that identify workforce needs, determine skills gaps, and engage employer sponsors to expand apprenticeships throughout the region. The SUNY Apprenticeship Program will assist in developing 2,000 pre-apprentices and Registered Apprentices over four to six-years in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, information technology/cybersecurity/artificial intelligence, and more.
