Chestnut Ridge School second graders fly their own Thanksgiving parade balloons

U.S. Army Veteran Robert Rapone with his dog, Casper.

Inspired by the story of the famous Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade told in the book Balloons Over Broadway by author Melissa Sweet, young readers at ChurchvilleChili’s Chestnut Ridge Elementary School created their own video version of the famous parade, complete with fanciful balloons and entertaining commentary. Second-grade teacher Jodi Piontkowski wanted students to get excited about reading and participate in a memorable learning experience. She worked with Enrichment Specialists Andrea Lynch and Stephanie Ricci to design a special lesson that incorporated reading, analysis and discussion, creative writing, art, science and engineering principles, along with collaboration skills and teamwork. After reading the book, which tells the story of Tony Sarg, the puppeteer tasked with creating the parade balloons that made the Macy’s event famous, student partners worked together to design their own balloon animals: whimsical giraffes, foxes, flying horses, and lions, to name just a few. They decorated their balloon puppets with a variety of colorful materials, taking care not to pop them. Students also had to consider how they would control and fly their finished balloons, as they were not filled with

Veterans Hall of Fame inductee visits Hilton social studies classes For the past few years, U.S. Army Veteran Bob Rapone has generously shared with Hilton students his knowledge about service to his country. Most recently, he visited Pam Tenny’s social studies classes at Merton Williams Middle School to talk about being a paratrooper in the 173rd Airborne Brigade and his experience getting his service dog, Casper, four years ago. Originally wanting to be a cook, Rapone decided to enroll in Airborne School instead. He quickly advanced to the rank of E-5 Sergeant and served two tours in Vietnam as a paratrooper and ranger doing reconnaisance missions. While in Vietnam, his unit was awarded numerous commendations and citations. Among Rapone’s many awards and medals are the Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Silver Star, and the Army Commendation Medal. When Rapone returned home in 1969, he, like many veterans, began suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). He shared with students how the America’s Vet Dogs program has dramatically improved his quality of life. In the video, Rapone explains the process of getting Casper, his therapy and PTSD guide dog. Casper is always dutifully by Rapone’s side as he participates in many events sharing his experiences, bringing awareness to veterans’ health issues and advocating for their wellness. Just the day before Rapone visited Hilton, he was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Veterans’ Outreach Center. The Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from New York State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life. At the conclusion of the classes, students shook hands with Rapone and thanked him for his service. Provided information and photo

lighter-than-air helium. Their engineering process was much like that followed by the original parade designer Sarg, who faced the same challenge in the early 1920s before helium was used in his balloons. After much good-humored trial and error (and a few exploded balloons), team members guided each special balloon as it took flight across a green screen, soon to be replaced by a video backdrop of the actual Macy’s storefront in New York City. Team members each wrote a description of their parade animal. They took turns recording each other’s scripts as parade day commentary. Teachers pulled the technology pieces together into a final video of the CRS Thanksgiving Day Parade, which can be viewed at https://www.wevideo. com/view/2462923992. Provided information and photos

Veteran contributor Walter Horylev: Thank you for so many great photographs! A true gentleman; thoughtful, kind, smart, fair, interested and interesting, eager to learn, a talented vocalist, a hard worker in his career as well as in his community of Hilton-Parma, committed to his word. We can all learn many lessons from the late Walter P. Horylev and his long and rich life (see obituary on page 6). My lesson from knowing and working with him is to keep learning, no matter what your stage in life. Over nearly two decades, photographer Walter Horylev helped readers of Westside News Inc. newspapers ‘see.’ As a frequent contributor, Walter was consistently interested, energetic, eager, and a stellar representative of the company. Meeting people, making them comfortable in front of the camera lens, and hearing and relating their stories never daunted him. Walter captured the essences of subjects such as tender moments with children at a Halloween party, the fun of 13 puppies visiting their veterinarian for the first time, the history of our local buildings in all stages of construction or destruction, the thrill of a carnival ride at an area festival, and the solemnity of a military funeral for a local veteran as it processed through villages. Thank you, Walter, for sharing your talent, intelligence, humor, and grace with me and the residents of the communities served by Westside News Inc. newspapers. You will be missed. Evelyn Dow Retired Editor Westside News Inc.

HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL HAMLIN CANDIDATES AND VOTER ELECTED OFFICIALS!

Do you know who the winners are?

Steven Baase - Conservative Party Town Supervisor. Ran unopposed. My hope is that he will keep the best interests of ALL Hamlin Residents in every decision he makes. Mike German - Republican and Conservative Party endorsed Highway Superintendent. Ran unopposed but received 10 votes less than the Supervisor. Is very well thought of and has only been the Highway Superintendent for 4 months. Jennifer Goodrich Voelkl - Republican and Conservative Party Senior Member of Town Board. We worked together for four months. She looks at each issue from both sides, asks a lot of questions and makes an informed decision. Jennifer is totally committed to do what is right to make our town a better place to live. Angel Male - Conservative Party. Newly elected town board member. She defeated me by 21 votes. My hope is that she will keep the best interests of ALL Hamlin residents in every decision she makes. Elizabeth Maxwell - Democratic Party was defeated in her bid for town board. She ran a good campaign and offered voters a choice and fared well in a predominantly republican town. i urge all residents to get involved, go to a town board, zoning, conservation and planning board meeting, Volunteer for recreation Dept, Library, Dog shelter and Life solutions.

Moving Forward Thank you so much for your vote of confidence. We truly appreciate it.

Now that the election is over, let’s get down to the people’s business. We will modernize our website, finish the sewer system, work with seniors on issues, institute a farm protection plan, look for grants for projects, form a cultural committee to bring new festivals, explore different recreational park options, promote new business in Hamlin, and other important issues. This is going to be a new and fun time for Hamlin! Everyone’s help and fresh ideas are welcome. Let’s get going! Steve Baase Hamlin’s New Supervisor I am so thankful to Hamlin for putting your trust in me. It’s almost time to get to work! While my goal list continues to grow, my first priorities are clear. Building and supporting small businesses, a dog park, park security, summer festival on fireman’s field, and areas of Hamlin without public water and internet are just the beginning of what I hope to champion. I have experience in finding and obtaining grants benefiting our community which will keep our tax base low while still expanding community offerings. I can’t wait to get started bringing fresh ideas and a new perspective to Hamlin! Angel Male Hamlin’s New Town Councilperson

Orleans County CCE to offer hybrid Master Gardener training in January Orleans County CCE is hosting a new hybrid Master Gardener training starting in January of 2022. The training is the first step towards becoming a Master Gardener volunteer with Cornell Cooperative Extension. This is the first year the training is being offered as an online/in-person hybrid course. Master Gardener training has been offered for decades across New York, but the core coursework has been in need of an update for some time. With the help of grant funding and input from volunteers and staff across the state, senior extension educators at Cornell spent the better part of 2019 curating the online content to offer thorough and in-depth lessons geared toward the adult learner. The result is an online course packed with information on key topics such as Plant Biology, Food Gardening, Entomology and more, as well as options for more detailed content on specific topics under the “Explore and Learn More” link under each general section.

Horticulture educator and MG Training Instructor Katie Oakes demonstrates a grafting technique during a past Master Gardener Training.

“I’m so impressed with this new hybrid format,” said Katie Oakes, Horticulture Educator at Orleans CCE and coordinator of the Master Gardener program. “There is so much to learn within the training program, and an online format really allows participants to work at their own pace, on their own schedule.” The training this coming winter will start January 13 and go until April 7. Participants will be given access to the online portion of the course on the Moodle educational platform where they complete lessons on their own. The group will then meet every other week (dates vary) to reinforce key concepts and to complete several hands-on activities designed to put into practice what they learned on the Moodle course the weeks before. “I think it’s really important to still have the in-person aspect,” explained Oakes. “Meeting in person builds that sense of community that might come a little less naturally in an online forum setting. Having the hands-on activities is really crucial, too, because people retain so much more knowledge by actually doing rather than simply observing.” Past Master Gardener Trainings have consisted of sixteen three-hour long lecture style classes covering a range of topics. The schedule was often difficult for participants with young families at home, full-time jobs, or other obligations. This new online course will give all participants the opportunity to gain knowledge and participate fully with a distance-learning perspective. The online course also includes extensive additional information that a fully inperson training just could not accommodate time-wise. “This new online format makes it so much easier to access valuable resources – and there are a lot! There’s so much excellent information included in this training, several of the videos and links to articles I can’t wait to re-visit and look at again,” said Nancy Halstead, an Orleans County Master Gardener who took the piloted online course as a trial last winter. After completion of the training, participants can complete 40 hours of volunteer service through the various programs at Orleans CCE to become a full-fledged Master Gardener Volunteer. Becoming a Master Gardener allows participants to become a part of a nationwide volunteer association focused on extending land-grant university’s research and expertise to the public in their own local communities. Current MG Volunteers in Orleans County serve the community in many different ways – offering educational classes to the public, hosting informational tables at local

events, speaking at area garden clubs, displaying at farmers markets and the 4-H Fair, collaborating with other CCE programs like 4-H and Master Food Preservers and more. There are about 20 active MG Volunteers in Orleans County, and in addition to monthly meetings, the volunteers get together for field trips, gardening conferences, and social outings as well. “I really love the camaraderie that comes with being a part of this group,” said long-time MG Volunteer Eileen Sorochty. “It’s so wonderful to be around like-minded Master Gardener Eileen Sorochty people caring about our teaches a class on Hypertufa in 2019. environment and each other’s well-being. Be- Educational classes for the public ing a Master Gardener are just one of the ways that Master has enriched my life in Gardeners volunteer their time. so many ways.” The deadline to register for the upcoming Master Gardener training (with a $50 non-refundable deposit) is December 22. Cost for the training is typically $200 per person, but there is a 50 percent discount for the first ten people to register (a $100 value). Reduced rate tuition is also available for additional participants as needed. If internet accessibility is an issue, participants can utilize office hours at the Orleans County CCE Education Center, Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., to access the course using CCE wi-fi and computers. For more information on the Master Gardener program in Orleans County, or to register for the upcoming Master Gardener Training, contact Horticulture Educator and MG Coordinator Katie Oakes at 798-4265 ext. 125 or email klo54@cornell.edu. Holiday Gift Guide

Toy buying tips when shopping for kids Shopping for gifts for kids makes many shoppers nostalgic for their own childhoods. Few adults can forget the joy of finding the perfect gift under the tree on Christmas morning. Recreating that magic for a youngster can be as joyous for gift givers as it is for kids. That’s especially so when shoppers make it a point to give safe, ageappropriate gifts. Whether shopping for their own children or their grandkids, nieces or nephews, shoppers can keep these tips in mind to ensure they give toys that are as safe as they are fun. •Speak to Mom and Dad first. When buying for a grandchild, niece or nephew, shoppers should first ask Mom or Dad for suggestions. Parents will know which types of toys their children like, and they’ll also know the child’s level of maturity. Some kids may not be mature enough to play with otherwise age-appropriate toys, while others may be mature beyond their years and enjoy more complex toys than their age would suggest. Parents will know what makes a good toy and what doesn’t. •Learn what to look for on labels. Toy labels are great sources of information, but shoppers must know what to look for. The American Academy of Pediatrics notes that toy labels include information about age-appropriateness (i.e., “Ages 3 & Up”) as well as directions regarding how to use the toy. If the instructions seem a bit complex for the child the item will be for, look for something else. Children’s toy labels also include additional information that consumers may not be familiar with. For example, toys labeled “ASTM F963” meet the latest safety standards from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. An “ASTM D4236” label indicates the materials associated with the art toy have been reviewed and deemed safe by a toxicologist. More information about toy label requirements can be found at cpsc.gov. The AAP advises that electric toys should only be given to kids if they include the UL

label. That means the toy has been certified by the global safety certification company UL, LLC. •Avoid certain features. The AAP notes that toys that are loud, shoot objects into the air or contain small pieces pose a threat to children. Especially loud toys can damage children’s hearing, while projectiles can increase the risk of eye injuries or choking. Toys with small pieces also pose a choking risk to young children who may try to put the pieces into their mouths. •Err on the side of caution. Consumers who are uncertain about the safety of a given toy, even after reading its label, should err on the side of caution and only give toys they’re confident won’t pose a safety risk. Even toys that may seem safe could be dangerous to kids who might otherwise seem old enough. For example, the AAP advises against giving kids under 12 hobby kits and chemistry sets. That’s because such kits may contain dangerous chemicals that even pre-adolescents are not old enough to handle safely. Shoppers must consider a host of factors when looking for safe toys for kids this holiday season. (Metro)

Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band to perform Community Christmas Concert The Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band, conducted by Dr. Charles P. Schmidt, will perform a Community Christmas Concert on Friday, December 10, 7:30 p.m., at Hilton Baptist Church. This free Christmas concert by the Gazebo Band is the eighth hosted by Hilton Baptist Church since 2013. Donations of non-perishable food items to benefit of the local food shelf will be accepted at the door. The program will feature traditional concert band music, including several holiday favorites and works by Gustav Holst, Robert Russell Bennett, Hershey Kay, Frank Erickson, and Steven Hodges. The program will also feature tuba player John Montgomery and vocalist Dean Strussenberg in a performance of the novelty, “Santa Wants a Tuba for Christmas.”

The Hilton-Parma Gazebo Band was established in 1984 by Hilton music educator Gordon Bascom. The band is an all-volunteer organization which draws its members from Monroe and Orleans counties. The Gazebo Band is dedicated to presenting an exciting variety of work from a broad range of musical styles. The band’s purpose is to provide adult musicians in the community with an opportunity to continue to create and enjoy music and to share the gift of music with the community, For further information regarding the Gazebo Band, contact Mary Reazor, band manager, at mreazor188@gmail.com or 392-9725. Tips for staying emotionally well through the holidays The holiday season can be stressful for millions of people. Not only are there pressures to travel and purchase gifts, but there’s more put on one’s plate than usual. This can lead to people spending a couple of months in an ongoing state of stress or overwhelm. The good news is that there are things people can do to help beat back the blues and combat stress all season long. “Things may be especially stressful this year for some people, due to supply chain issues and the pandemic,” explains Katie Sandler, personal development and career coach. “It’s especially important this time of the year to keep stress under control, so that you can enjoy the holiday season, and go into the new year feeling refreshed.” According to the National Institutes of Health, we all feel stress from time to time, but if it goes on for weeks, it can negatively impact your health. Stress can make you sick, as well as lead to making unhealthy choices, such as eating too much, smoking or drinking alcohol, or not getting proper sleep. Some of the things people can do to help stay emotionally well throughout the holiday season include: •Identifying triggers. Determine what those things are that tend to bring you down or stress you the most. What can you do to minimize them or become more resilient? Perhaps you can delegate, hire help, opt for delivery services, etc. Plus, keep in mind that if saying yes to every invite you get this holiday will cause you a lot of stress, it’s time to learn to gracefully say no to some things. •Volunteer. When we spend time helping others, we tend to forget about our own problems, or we gain a new perspective. Altruism leads to a sense of emotional well-being. There are always organizations around the holidays that are in need of volunteers, so get a few hours in. Whether it’s helping in a soup kitchen, delivering meals to the elderly, or reading holiday stories to preschoolers, it will help make you happy. •Make time for rest. Holidays can be a busy time that leaves some people feeling drained. Try to minimize this by making lists, planning things out, and always scheduling down time. It’s important to have dedicated time for relaxing, unwinding, and recharging at this time of the year.

•Find an outlet. There are many healthy things you can do to help reduce stress and help your mind stay in a good place. Try meditating, taking a hike, spending time in nature, journaling, or learning something new. If you are busy learning qigong or knitting, for example, your mind will stay focused on those things, instead of holiday stressors. •Keep it in perspective. Oftentimes, our thoughts will embellish things and make it seem much worse than it really is – hello catastrophic thinking. We tend to worry about many things that never happen, which zaps us of our energy and mood for no reason. When your mood slumps during the holiday, get to the root of it, tend to it if need be, and keep what is going on in perspective. •Choose happiness. Happiness is a choice. Each day, we have the ability to choose to be happy, but too often, we focus instead on those things that bring us stress. Start and end each day with having gratitude for another day. Focus on the things you are grateful for, rather than focusing on any of the negative things or stressors that are going on around you. “At first, doing these things seems like work. It’s something you have to remind yourself of and work at,” added Sandler. “The more you live your life this way, though, the easier it becomes, and soon it’s like second nature for your life to have less stress and for you to live in an emotionally well place. Our emotional health is vital to our overall health and success in life. We must cultivate a healthy mindset.” Provided information

Free 2022 Erie Canalway calendar now available at area libraries The public is invited to pick up a free 2022 Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor calendar at selected libraries and visitor centers throughout the National Heritage Corridor. The calendar features winning images from this year’s Erie Canalway photo contest. “The calendar showcases the unique beauty, history, and character of New York’s canals and canal communities,” said Bob Radliff, Erie Canalway Executive Director. “We hope it inspires people to preserve and celebrate our incredible canal heritage.” Calendars became available December 1 and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, thanks to generous sponsorship by the NYS Canal Corporation. New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “The 2022 calendar celebrates our iconic Canal System by displaying brilliant photographs as captured by many of our canalside neighbors, and I encourage everyone to retrieve one while supplies last, so that they

too can enjoy these spectacular scenes all year long.” This year’s cover features the tour boat Lil’ Diamond III on the Erie Canal in Herkimer by Cliff Oram of Ilion. Calendars are available locally at Hoag Library, 134 South Main Street, Albion; Seymour Library, 161 East Avenue, Brockport; Hamlin Public Library, 1680 Lake Road, Hamlin; Community Free Library, 86 Public Square, Holley; Brockport Welcome Center, 11 Water Street, Brockport; Newman Riga Library, 1 South Main Street, Churchville; Greece Public Library, 2 Vince Tofany Boulevard, Greece; Ogden Farmers’ Library, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport; Chili Public Library, 3237 Chili Avenue, Rochester; and Gates Public Library, 902 Elmgrove Road, Rochester. If unable to obtain a calendar locally, contact erie_canal@ nps.gov. They ask for help in covering postage, and a donation envelope is inside the calendar for convenience. Provided information

Opinion An idea to consider There is a way to utilize the talents and skills of all of those people in heath care who lost their jobs because they chose to not be vaccinated for COVID-19. In different locations around the state of New York there are hospitals that have closed for one reason or another. Those hospitals could be reopened and those health professionals who chose not to be vaccinated could be put to work there. Those citizens of New York who chose not to be vaccinated and need to be hospitalized due to contracting COVID-19 could be sent to those hospitals. That would free those beds now occupied by those people in other hospitals and make room for those who were vaccinated and still got the disease. That would also ease the tremendous burden on those in health care who put their lives on the line every day to care for those who refused to be vaccinated, which is very unfair to those health care professionals. If closed hospitals could not be found, there are lots of empty buildings throughout the state that could be used in that way. If China could build a brand new hospital every 10 days at the start of the pandemic, we could certainly make use of a building already standing in that amount of time for this purpose. Keith Ryan, Publisher Westside News Inc.

County Investigator with the District Attorney’s Office for 10 years. Joe’s life story will be shared during his visitation on Sunday, December 5 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Walker Brothers Funeral Home, 15 West Avenue, Spencerport. His Funeral Mass will be December 6 at 10 a.m. at St. Pius the Tenth Church, Chili Avenue. Interment in Pittsford Cemetery. Donations can be made to Honor Flight Rochester, Inc., P.O. Sweden seeks proposals for skatepark naming rights The Town of Sweden has launched a campaign to raise funds for its new Skatepark at the Sweden Town Park, 4761 Redman Road. Construction will take place in the early summer of 2022. The town is soliciting proposals for the naming rights to the Skatepark and to primary features at the skatepark through a Request For Proposal process. The Request can be found on the Town website at www.townofsweden.org or at the Sweden Town Hall, 18 State Street. The Sweden Town Board believes that the Sweden Town Park adds tremendous value to the community. From being a place where Sweden’s own residents can recreate, exercise, and socialize to being a regional attraction that brings thousands of visitors annually who in turn spend money at local businesses, the Town Park is a cornerstone of the greater-Sweden community. The Skatepark is centrally located in the

Town Park, highly visible to park-goers. The new $550,000 Skatepark will be a major draw for years to come. The Skatepark is funded in large part by the Ralph Wilson Jr. Foundation and The Skatepark Project through a $250,000 grant and $50,000 environmental award. The fundraising campaign will further reduce the cost to local taxpayers. The Sweden Community Foundation is also helping with the campaign by selling bricks that will be installed at the skatepark. For more information about the naming rights or brick purchases, email supervisor@townofsweden.org or call 6377588. The deadline for a Naming Rights Proposal submission is January 28, 2022. Brick sales will be on-going for several months. Provided information

Explorers program satisfies students’ interest in emergency services At a time when emergency service volunteers are in a 30-year decline, ByronBergen High School students are changing the statistics. Izzy Best, GJ Donofrio, Lea Donofrio, Logan Fregoe, Rayden Robinson, Emma Starowitz, James (JC) Starowitz, and Rugar Starowitz are full-time high school students. In addition to participating in sports, advanced placement classes, student government, and part-time jobs, they also volunteer with the Bergen Fire Department in its Explorers program. “The purpose of the Explorers program is to start educating teenagers about the fire service and EMS, hoping to inspire the next generation of first responders,” said Julie Donofrio, Explorer Program Coordinator and EMT with the Bergen Fire Department. “Our current group of kids is interested in both the fire side and the EMT side of things, which is awesome, because they’re learning how firefighting and EMT work as a team.” “My parents are part of the fire department and have been for a while, so it’s kind of in my family,” said Lea Donofrio. “I’m interested in working in EMS and rescue. I want to go into the Coast Guard and police afterwards. I know people who did Explorers in the past, and once they obtained their EMT at age 17, they received a lot more benefits with their jobs and colleges, so I think it’ll set me apart.” Students can earn experience from a lot of places, so why pick the Explorers? “It’s a career path for a lot of kids,” said Julie. “These kids have in one way or another grown up in the fire service, and it just seems natural. This is just what they know.” Something that makes this group of students stand out is that all of them are second- or third-generation firefighters or EMS. Julie herself has the pleasure of be-

ing able to teach and train her two children, GJ and Lea. “GJ actually wasn’t sure at all if he wanted to join, but both of my kids had been going to the hall and participating since they were little, so they were our guinea pigs,” said Julie with a laugh. “Now that they realize it’s kind of fun, they enjoy learning about the service and life skills.” The skills that students learn translate not only to the medical world but to the “real world.” They learn how to perform CPR, administer first aid, and use the AED machine, which are all life skills. They also volunteer in the community by bringing cookies to Bergen Meadows during the holidays, socializing with residents and checking their blood pressure rates. “Students are interacting with the community, practicing skills, and spreading the word about the program,” said Julie. Julie said one of the best parts is seeing how engaged and motivated students are. She said that the district is instrumental in providing support and rustling up interest in the program. She often receives texts from parents, wondering when the next meeting is. “The Explorers program is a great opportunity for our kids,” said Julie. “The program has given kids first-hand experience in working with the Bergen Fire Department. These students really go above and beyond, and they are committed to giving back to our community. We are lucky to have this program in our school district.” If anyone – student or community member – is interested in joining the Explorers or volunteering with the department, Julie strongly encourages them to talk to one of the students currently involved or head down to the Bergen Fire Department for more information.
