Area youth celebrate National 4-H Week October 4 through 10 Each year, National 4-H Week sees millions of youth, parents, volunteers, and alumni come together to celebrate the many positive youth development opportunities offered by 4-H. The theme for this year’s National 4-H Week, October 4 through 10, is Opportunity 4 All, a campaign that was created by National 4-H Council to rally support for Cooperative Extension’s 4-H program and identify solutions to eliminate the opportunity gap that affects 55 million kids across America. With so many children struggling to reach their full potential, 4-H believes that young people, in partnership with adults, can play a key role in creating a more promising and equitable future for youth, families and communities across the country. “In 4-H, we believe all youth should have an equal opportunity to succeed,” says Kristina Gabalski, CCE Orleans 4-H Program Coordinator. “We work to support all youth in developing the skills they need to make a difference in the world.” Monroe County Monroe County 4-H will observe National 4-H Week this year by highlighting some of the inspirational 4-H youth in our community who are working tirelessly to support each other and their communities. “We believe youth perspectives are so important and a solution to eliminating the opportunity gap, because young people come with new ideas and new ways of seeing the world,” explains Jennifer Sirangelo, President and CEO of National 4-H Council. By encouraging diverse voices and innovative actions, 4-H believes that solutions can be found to address the educational, economic and health issues that have created the opportunity gap. Throughout the week, youth will be encouraged to participate in activities, which reflect the 4-H mission and goals. The celebration culminates with a scavenger hunt in Monroe County Parks. Families can follow along on the Monroe County 4H Facebook page. On Tuesday, October 6, Monroe County 4-H will be hosting two virtual Open House sessions so that county residents Allison Merle, 13, of Holley, takes part interested in 4-H may learn more. in the 2020 Orleans County 4-H Public These Zoom sesPresentations event held in February. sions will offer the Allison presented on cake decorating. same information

All are welcome. The community is invited to join Monroe County 4-H participants to perform random acts of kindness on Thursday, October 8. Recognize and appreciate the essential workers in your life by writing a kindly worded letter. One example could be to write your mail carrier a letter thanking them for their hard work and dedication to getting the mail delivered. On Saturday, October 10, youth and families are encouraged to get outdoors and explore Monroe County’s vast and beautiful network of county parks. There are instructions for completing a family-friendly, family-fun scavenger hunt on the Monroe County National 4-H Week event page, http://monroe.cce.cornell.edu/events/2020/10/04/national4-h-week-2020. Complete the hunt, share your findings, and receive an honorary Park Ranger award. Orleans County The new 4-H year began on October 1, Gabalski said, “With COVID-19 safety protocols in place, local 4-H clubs are beginning to meet again in-person. We will host our annual Produced in New York cooking competition this fall, as well as our 4-H Holiday Workshops. Two special in-person workshops are part of the National 4-H Week celebration.” A Halloween Ikebana Pumpkin workshop is planned for Thursday, October 8, at 7 p.m. in the Ed Center on the 4-H Fairgrounds. “We will learn about the Japanese art of floral arranging called Ikebana,” Gabalski says. “Participants

Participants will get to take home the treats they make, Gabalski says. Both events will have limited participants, and masks will be required. “We will also be practicing physical distancing to stay safe,” Gabalski adds. Gabalski says she will be working to have poster displays in place at local libraries, and she also hopes to have a 4-H animal science costume contest on the Orleans County 4-H Facebook page. “Orleans 4-Hers can submit photos of their animal projects wearing costumes,” Gabalski says. “There will be prizes.” This is a great time to join 4-H, she adds. “4-H, the nation’s largest youth development and empowerment organization, cultivates confident youth who tackle issues that matter most in their communities right now. We have opportunities here in Orleans County as well as at the state and national levels.” For more information, contact Gabalski at 798-4265. Provided information and photos

Spencerport Fire District 175 Lyell Ave Spencerport, New York 14559

Office of the Fire Chief Chief Tom Clark

A Message on Fire Prevention Week and Community Open House

Dear Community Member, On behalf of the dedicated volunteer firefighters of the Spencerport Fire District, I would like to send my heartfelt appreciation for your support and cooperation during these past few months as our community continues to grapple with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our way of life has changed and all of us have had to adapt to the disruptions that this situation has caused. Unfortunately, many events that the community looks forward to have had to be canceled, including the annual Firemen’s Carnival and we are hopeful that we can hold these gatherings next year. One event that our organization looks forward to hosting is the annual Community Open House during Fire Prevention Week. It is an opportunity for individuals and families to meet our firefighters and become educated on staying safe while at home, school, and work. Unfortunately, due to the gathering restrictions that have been placed on many organizations, we will be unable to host the Open House this year. This decision was not made lightly, but as Fire Chief, I must place the safety of our members and the community first. In lieu of a Community Open House, we are working with the Spencerport School District to dispense information on fire prevention that children can access through the “Virtual Backpack.” Additionally, we will put links on our website and social media platforms to fire prevention resources that can be downloaded or printed. Fire Prevention Week is scheduled for October 4-10 and we encourage everyone to take this opportunity to assess their homes and businesses for fire hazards and other safety concerns. Thank you for your attention and patience during these trying times. Stay safe and be well. Sincerely, Tom Clark, Chief Spencerport Fire District www.spencerportfire.org

Gerald was born in Albion, NY, to Herman and Geraldine Kage on December 14, 1946. His early childhood was spent living at the Black North (formerly the Cottage Hotel) in Point Breeze, as his grandparents were owners/proprietors of the family business. The family moved to North Tonawanda, NY, for twelve years before a moving back to a farm in Lyndonville, NY. He attended LA Webber High School, donning number 42 on both his football and basketball jerseys and graduated in 1966. Athletics proved to be a life-long passion as he became a teacher of Physical Education after graduating from Quincy College in 1969. Gerald was an active member of NYS Teacher’s Union and part of a negotiating team that brought about many changes for the Teachers of the district, which was one of his proudest achievements. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, enjoyed golf, possessed amazing talents in the kitchen, and above all was passionate about car racing. He achieved his retirement goal of settling on a beautiful lake and spending quality time fishing and gardening. As most major festivals and activities have been canceled during the pandemic, the 2020 Rochester Recreation Festival persisted. It took place on Saturday, September 12, and was attended by approximately 500 people, a 66 percent increase over last year’s event, according to Simon Devenish, the festival’s organizer. “This is significant because COVID guidelines require that we space people out in order to be safe. At the same time, we are not creating the sense of community and togetherness we actually want to achieve.” He is hoping to more than double attendance next year, especially if social distancing rules change, allowing people to be closer to each other. “I really want to thank those who came out for the festival for being brave and enthusiastic, as well as remaining COVID-friendly all day by wearing masks, sanitizing hands frequently, and maintaining safe distances,” said Devenish. “Trust me when I say I didn’t do things the way I wanted to. I did things the way I had to do them to be safe and compliant with guidelines. In the end, people appeared to have a great time and responded positively.” Devenish praised volunteers for their hard work and commitment in bringing this year’s festival to the community. “This year’s success is really due to the many volunteers who’ve stepped up to provide amazing activities and support. Because of them, we’re Makayla Hall attempted the rope growing the festival in bridge. Photo by Karen Fien. significant ways,” said Devenish. “Because of our volunteers and their enthusiasm, I feel confident that we’ll be able to offer even more opportunities for outdoor recreation in 2021.” One of the new activities that people especially enjoyed was the Rope Bridge Challenge. Spencerport Boy Scout Pack 92 built and brought a rope bridge that people were encouraged to cross. “While not requiring as much skill and training as karate, it provided a genuine challenge for young and old alike,” said Devenish. Attendees also enjoyed the new mini-golf course. Two bands, The Synergy Project and Double Down, provided music throughout the day. The Rochester Recreation Festival was made possible by United Healthcare, the naming sponsor for the 2020 festival. Other sponsors included Barton’s Parkside Hots, Mary Lobene from Hunt Real Estate Spencerport, ESL Federal Credit Union, J. William Jewelers, State Farm Insurance: Dominic Agostini Agency, Union Street Coffee House, Rochester Chargers MFL, A Plus Party Rental, and Schultz Associates Engineers and Land Surveyors, P.C. “Sponsorships are more important than ever as we grow this festival in order to attract more people to Spencerport. This is good for Spencerport and good for its businesses who have struggled as a result of the bridge reconstruction and the pandemic,” said Devenish. Anyone interested in becoming part of the 2021 Rochester Rec Fest as a sponsor, volunteer, or activity provider, is asked to email info@rocrecfest.com or call 209-3494. Provided information

Signs installed along the NYS Canalway Water Trail Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor has recently installed new signs to mark the NYS Canalway Water Trail at more than 140 launch sites along the Erie, Champlain, Cayuga-Seneca, and Oswego canals. The blue and yellow signs are intended to help paddlers identify safe put-in and take-out sites from the water and assist with wayfinding to launch sites from land. “The NYS Canal System is among the state’s greatest recreational assets. We’re thrilled that these signs will welcome paddlers and make it easier for them to experience the history and beauty of the canals,” said Bob Radliff, Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

Water trail signs are designed to work in tandem with the NYS Canalway Water Trail Guidebook and Navigational Map Set and the online www.nycanalmap.com. Paddlers can use these resources to plan a day trip, weekend adventure, or multi-day thru-paddle. More information is available at www.eriecanalway.org/watertrail. New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton said, “More and more New Yorkers are bringing their kayaks, paddleboards, water-bikes, and other nonmotorized watercrafts to the waters of our Canal System, eager to explore the iconic waterways and natural beauty along the banks. These signs will help ensure visitors can access the water safely, and allow them to navigate the canals appropriately from their first paddle.” This project was prepared with funding provided by the New York State Department of State under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund, as part of Montgomery County’s Kayak Share Project, and by the NYS Canal Corporation, both as part of the state’s Regional Economic Development Council Initiative. In addition, critical support was provided by the National Park Service. Provided information

Thank you for the History of Parma Center articles

www.celluradental.com

Congratulations to David Crumb and Westside News for publishing his “History of Parma Center” in four parts. David’s writing has many “human interest” stories and not just facts like names and dates. I was born at 446 Parma Center Road and walked across the street for six grades at Parma District #1. The education at these country schools was inspiring for further education. Of special interest in Part 1 was the story of R.P. Odell who was working on the river near Portland. Seven men did not pay their fare, so R.P. collected fares midstream and then told the men to “swim to shore” as he knocked all seven overboard. Part 3 is the story of “Blindman Patterson.” The small building where he made his brooms is still there behind his uncle, Judge Patterson’s home (built in 1830). He became blind at 21 and supported himself and two family members by walking and selling his brooms. He certainly was industrious. I am sending the four issues to my brother in Colorado who also has fond memories of Parma Center. Thanks again for keeping local history alive. Priscilla Tyner Beeman North Chili

Take a dark journey this October at GCV&M

Hamilton House at dusk. Photo by Dave Valvo.

Something wicked this way comes to Genesee Country Village & Museum with the return of a popular fall event with a twist - Spirits of the Past: A Walk in the Dark. This year’s iteration of the museum’s most haunted visitor experience is a self-guided, outdoor walking tour. Guests will wind their way through the Historic Village lanes, past darkened fields, eerily lit yards, and gardens that take on a spirit all their own. Along the way, villagers will emerge to recount spine-tingling tales, or more ominously, lurk in the shadows and say nothing at all. Each night of the Spirits walks, the museum is offering food and drinks, enabling guests to partake either before or after their trip through the eerie Historic Village. Warming seasonal fare will be available at the Exhibition Barn along with wine and the museum’s authentic 19th-century ales, for those in need of liquid courage. Inside the Historic Village, the Pavilion Garden Restaurant will have donuts, cider, and snacks. Spirits of the Past: A Walk in the Dark will begin in the late evening and run until after dark on October 16, 17, 18, 23, and 24. Tickets are $20 each or $18 for Museum members. Advanced reservations are required for this event, and due to program content is not suitable for children under the age of 12. Times and availability can be found at www.

gcv.org. Early registration is recommended as the event is expected to sell out. In support of COVID-19 precautions, mask-wearing will be required at all times except when seated at a table to enjoy food and beverages. All regulations regarding food and alcohol consumption will be enforced. Entry times will be limited to support social distancing, and the total number of guests will be capped at 25 percent of the museum’s normal capacity. Provided information

Live-streamed local theatre performance of Songs for a New World: The Musical OFC Creations is virtually presenting Songs for a New World: The Musical on October 9 and 10, which can be streamed online. Written by Jason Robert Brown, Songs for a New World is a song cycle that transports audiences from the deck of a 1492 Spanish sailing ship to a ledge, 57 stories above Fifth Avenue, to meet a startling array of characters that range from a young man who has determined that basketball is his ticket out of the ghetto to a woman whose dream of marrying rich nabs her the man of her dreams and a soulless marriage. The show is directed by Judith Ranaletta. She is best known as the former longtime Artistic and Vocal Director for Greece Athena High School, and now is the director and founder of the ROC City Singers and is the Arts Program Director for the Century Club, bringing innovative and creative theater experiences to Rochester. Ranaletta has assembled a professional cast of local talent including Orlando Boxx, Jennifer Dinolfo, Lyndsey Lord, and Hector Manuel. While the performers will be performing live from OFC’s new home, the OFC Creations Theatre Center, audiences will be able to view the performance online which will be streamed by video. The new OFC Creations Theatre Center, a 260-seat theater in the Winton Place Plaza in Brighton, officially opened in July. Although no live audiences have been able to attend shows, OFC has kept the lights on with educational programs and streaming programs virtually online. In July and August, OFC ran the largest theater summer camp program in New

York State with 17 full musical productions and over 500 campers. Instructors guided attendees through singing, acting, and dance while putting on camps themed around Aladdin, Sweeney Todd, The Sound of Music, and many others. Due to COVID-19 precautions, campers were required to wear masks at all times with the exception of lunch break. Campers were broken up into smaller groups of 15 at all times, and temperatures were taken at the door. While singing, campers were given a face shield to wear in addition to their cloth face mask for extra protection, and there were no in person performances with audiences because of New York State restrictions. After eight weeks of summer camps, OFC had no illnesses due to COVID-19. “Even during a pandemic, our community is craving the arts,” said OFC Executive Director, Eric Vaughn Johnson. “We were met with a huge challenge, our students hadn’t been around other kids since March and we had minimal examples to follow.” Similar safety precautions will be in place for staff and performers involved with OFC’s presentation of Songs for a New World. With a cast of only four performers, the actors will wear face shields and will creatively use a full body plastic shield throughout the performance. Performance dates are Friday, October 9, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 10, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 to $25 and are available at www.OFCCreations.com or by calling 667-0954. Get out & grow! by Kristina Gabalski

Annual flowering vines by Kristina Gabalski There’s nothing like colorful annual climbing and flowering vines to add charm to your garden and landscape. They add an almost magical quality to your plantings and grow rapidly, yet are not a long-term commitment. Annual vines are a great way to add a vertical dimension to your landscape, even in your vegetable garden or in containers. You can use vines to hide or camouflage spots in your yard that are not attractive. Annual vines can be used to create warmweather privacy screens and help elements like fence posts and mailbox posts appear more natural and less dominant. According to Iowa State University Extension, annual vines are easy to grow and are relatively free of pest problems. Here is a selection of several of the annual vines that you can grow. Hyacinth bean (Lablab purpureus) grows 10 to 30 feet in a growing season and can completely cover a fence or trellis with its twining stems. The large, six-inch green leaves feature burgundy veins, and the stems are also a burgundy color. Vines produce clusters of purple or white flowers beginning in mid-summer right through fall. The bean pods are flat and burgundy colored. Hyacinth bean needs full sun and well-drained soil. Iowa State recommends soaking the seeds in warm water a day or two before planting directly into the garden. You can eat hyacinth bean pods if you harvest when they are young and tender. Morning glory vines (Ipomoea purpurea) grow best in full sun to partial shade. To help germination, nick the seed coat with a file or soak the seeds in warm water before planting. You can direct-seed morning glories or start indoors four to six weeks before planting outside (although I cannot recommend starting them inside near lace curtains as I did years ago. I’m sure your imagination will easily envision what a disaster that was). Morning glory vines begin to bloom in mid-to-late summer, and as their name indicates, their bright and cheerful blooms will often close in the afternoon on sunny days.

Scarlet runner beans produce bright red flowers with green leaves. Photo by Kristina Gabalski. Sweet peas (Lathyrus odoratus) are an old-fashioned flower grown for their fragrance. They rapidly reach up to six feet tall with flowers appearing in early summer in colors from blue and lavender to salmon and red. Tendrils will make their way easily up a trellis or fence. Soak seeds overnight in warm water before seeding and sow in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked. Scarlet runner beans (Phaseolus coccineus) climb 10 to 20 feet. The bright green leaves contrast strikingly with the multiple sprays of flaming-red, pea-like flowers. Plant in early May in a protected, sunny location (I have direct-sown in early June and they do fine - just flower a bit later). Pods can be eaten when they are small; if left on the vine, they can grow to a foot long and will turn black, mottled with purple. Another great perk - the flowers are edible use them for garnishes, in salads, or maybe to decorate cakes! These are just a few of the many annual flowering vines that can add so much to your garden, and don’t forget about other bean varieties that vine and even cucumbers and gourds that can be trained over trellises and arbors.

Holley man named TANY 2019 Statewide Driver of the Year The Trucking Association of New York (TANY) Safety Maintenance Management Council acknowledged Kendall Heffernan of Holley, a professional truck driver for Reid Petroleum Corporation, with the New York State 2019 Statewide Driver of the Year Award during a virtual awards ceremony on Friday, September 18.
The award recognizes truck drivers who demonstrate a dedication to their profession and loyalty to their employers. Consideration for the award is given to those with outstanding driving records and who display professionalism both on and off the road. Winners are often very involved in their communities, typically through safety education, civic engagement, or charitable pursuits.

Kendall was recognized for his outstanding safety achievements, dedication to his job performance, contributing to the success of his company’s safety record, and for contributing towards the betterment of the trucking industry and his community. He has been safely driving for 30 years, nine of which have been with Reid Petroleum Corporation. He is very involved with his community, assisting with a variety of fundraisers, teaching 4-H, and participating in activities with his church. He helped to build, and continues to maintain, a community garden within his village as well. Steven Reid, logistics manager, gave an example of why Kendall has been such a valuable member of their

company’s driving team. “Kendall was involved in a serious motor vehicle accident [last year] which in most cases would have claimed the life of the driver and occupants of the other vehicle involved.” He went on to say, “Kendall was commended by responding emergency personnel for his actions of maintaining control of his unit as well as mitigating a hazmat spill of fuel onto the highway.” Five finalists of TANY’s Driver of the Year Award are recognized each year with one driver selected as the overall statewide winner. The Statewide Driver of the Year is eligible to be nominated for the American Trucking Association’s National Driver of the Year Award. Provided information
