Churchville decorates for the 4th of July by Pamela Moore, Harvey C. Noone Post 954 Family Last year our tradition of celebrating the birth of America with parades, fireworks, vacations, picnics, and large gatherings of families and friends was impossible. Harvey C. Noone Legion responded by launching its first annual 4th of July Decorating Contest to ensure that, despite difficult circumstances, the community still celebrated the 4th with gratitude and fun. This year, the Auxiliary again joined in sponsoring this event and added a Poppy Display category. Poppies symbolize the sacrifices of those who died while serving

our nation and preserving the freedoms we so joyfully celebrate every 4th of July. The Poppy Display created by Ron and Carol Belczak beautifully expresses this symbol. Carol’s uncle, who was killed in WWII in the battle of Guadalcanal, and all other fallen heroes are honored. A portion of their display recreates Flanders Field, where the spring after WWI ended, the battlefields of France erupted with red poppies. At once, this humble flower became the symbol of remembrance of those who died defending freedom and democracy. Ellen Schulte’s display incorporates the traditional elements of a celebratory Star Spangled 4th of July with a bouquet of poppies and a sign stating, “Land of the Free Because of the Brave.” Again paying tribute to those who gave everything so future generations of Americans could gather together on July 4th to celebrate freedom and our nation’s birthday.

Bridget Herrmann and Scott Fry won second place for their patriotic display. Photo by Bridget Herrmann.

Willie Sweeting Gazebo Dedication is July 10 at Sweden Town Park The Sweden Community Foundation, the Sweden Town Board, and the family of Willie Sweeting invite the community to the Willie Sweeting Gazebo Dedication at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 10, at the Sweden Town Park. A reception in the Sweden Town Park Lodge will follow the dedication. In case of bad weather, the dedication will take place inside the lodge. The new Willie Sweeting Memorial Gazebo is located on the east side of the Sweden Town Park Lodge and is surrounded by water on three sides. Donations from the Sweeting family, Sweeting grandchildren, and many friends of Willie Sweeting made this project a reality. The Sweden Community Foundation, founded in 2005, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation committed to the

expansion, promotion, and funding of recreation opportunities for the residents in the greater Sweden Community. The foundation has helped finance many Sweden Town Willie Sweeting Park projects, including Nietopski Field, soccer/football fields and lights, Sweden Town Lodge, an accessible playground, and Splash Pad, plus supports many other community projects with grants and individual donors. Provided information and photo

The Willie Sweeting Gazebo was installed in September 2020, but the dedication was delayed due to the pandemic.

The displays of all the contestants exhibit the true American spirit of creativity, gratitude, and fun. Contest winners are: •Business Display – Jake’s Pub, North Chili •General Patriotic Display 1st place – Ginger Parker, Buffalo Road, Churchville •General Patriotic Display 2nd place – Bridget Herrmann and Scott Fry, North Union Street, North Chili •Poppy Display 1st place – Carol and Ron Belczak, Ridgefield Drive, Churchville •Poppy Display 2nd place – Ellen Schulte, Spotts Circle, Churchville More photos appear at www.harveycnoonepost954.org and on the Post Family’s Facebook page. Monroe County Executive Adam Bello signed Carrie Ray’s 3-Foot Passing Law to Protect Bicyclists on June 29 as members of Ray’s family looked on. Photo from @CountyExecBello on Twitter.

New law to protect bicylists named for Carrie Ray On June 29, Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, joined by Legislators Rachel Barnhart and Jackie Smith, Michael Ray, and members of Reconnect Rochester, signed Carrie Ray’s 3-Foot Passing Law to Protect Bicyclists, requiring motorists to maintain a distance of at least three feet when passing a cyclist. The law is named in honor of 46-yearold Carrie Ray, a Brockport elementary school teacher and mom who was bicycling on Sweden Walker Road in October 2019 when she was struck and killed by a passing pickup truck. “Carrie Ray’s 3-Foot Passing Law to Protect Bicyclists is a critical and life-saving piece of legislation,” said Bello. “Unfortunately, New York State law doesn’t give concrete guidance about how much space we should give bicyclists on the roads – the law just says drivers must remain a ‘safe distance’ from cyclists. We all know that passing too closely is a dangerous and potentially deadly threat to cyclists and this new law defines a set standard distance that will help ensure that when our kids, spouses, moms and dads go out for a bike ride on a nice day, they are safer and better protected on our roadways.” Thirty-three states and the District of Columbia already require a safe passing distance of three feet, and Suffolk County

on Long Island passed a three-foot law in April. The local legislation was spearheaded by County Legislators Jackie Smith (R-Clarkson, Hamlin, Sweden) and Rachel Barnhart (D-Rochester). Legislator Smith said: “I am proud and honored to have been part of enacting this local law. I remember how rattled the entire Clarkson community was by Carrie Ray’s passing, but I also remember the loving diligence shown by her family. While the circumstances under which I met the Ray family were tragic, it has been moving to work with them to create this legislation that will make our community safer. This legislation exemplifies Carrie’s legacy of caring for her family and community and her memory will be honored in keeping cyclists and pedestrians safe here in Monroe County every day.” “It’s my hope that this bill actually causes absolutely no more tickets to be written,” said Michael Ray, Carrie’s widower. “If this bill can educate one other person to take seriously their responsibilities to share the road with others – that it’s your responsibility to control your vehicle in a manner that keeps everyone around you safe, to be proactive instead of reactive, we won’t have any more tickets to write, and this bill will have done exactly what it needs to do.” Provided information

Drought conditions continue in Great Lakes The drought conditions that have impacted the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River watershed this spring have continued to persist into the summer. The North American drought monitor maps show abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions within most of the basin, both upstream (around Lake Erie and Lake Ontario) and downstream (along the St. Lawrence River). The water level of Lake Ontario remained stable in June. Unless the basin receives significant rainfall, it is likely that Lake Ontario is approaching (or has already reached) its seasonal peak or maximum level. As a result of the drought conditions, lake levels reached critical low levels defined by Plan 2014 criterion H14, which is the trigger that allows the International Lake Ontario–St. Lawrence River Board (Board) to deviate from plan-prescribed flows. The Board began deviating from flows prescribed by Plan 2014 (Plan flows) by reducing Lake Ontario outflows on May 29. The Board will continue with the current low water deviation strategy of flow reductions 7,060 cfs below Plan flows for the foreseeable future. “It is important to remember the ability for the Board to influence water levels within this natural system is in the realm of centimeters and inches, not meters and feet.

Lake levels are largely dependent on inflows received from Mother Nature, namely precipitation,” said Steve Durrett, United States Co-Chair of the International Lake Ontario–St. Lawrence River Board. The Board will continue to monitor conditions and the effects of the deviation strategy closely while simultaneously tracking weather forecasts and drought conditions. Deviations from Plan flows under the low Criterion H14 threshold are meant to “provide all possible relief to municipal water intakes, navigation and power purposes, upstream and downstream.” The deviations are expected to decrease the risk of excessive low water levels caused by dry summer conditions. Two local Girl Scouts earn 2021 Gold Award Girl Scouts of Western New York (GSWNY) recently announced 56 Girl Scouts as 2021 recipients of the Girl Scout Gold Award, including Amanda Daubert of Spencerport and Rachel VanWinkle of North Chili. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award in the world for girls, acknowledges the power behind each recipient’s dedication to not only empowering and bettering herself, but also to making the world a better place for others. The Gold Award project is the culmination of all the work a girl puts into “going for the Gold.” The project should fulfill a need within a girl’s community (whether local or global) and create change that has the potential to be on-going or sustainable. Approximately 80 hours of community service are involved in the project. Completion of the Gold Award also qualifies the Girl Scout for special scholarship opportunities and she can enlist in the military at a higher starting pay grade. For her project, Amanda Daubert constructed a Blessing Box located in front of Hilton Baptist Church to provide free food and supplies to the community. “I addressed the issue of poverty by being able to give free supplies and food to whoever is in need. Especially since COVID-19 hit, lots of people have lost their jobs and aren’t able to make as much money as they used to. The Blessing Box is able to give some supplies to people in Amanda Daubert need for free,” Amanda said. The youth group at Hilton Baptist Church will be maintaining the box, making the project sustainable. Of her work on the project, Amanda said, “I learned that I can do anything if I just put my mind into it and take the

time that I need. I was determined and motivated.” She feels the most successful part of the project has been the outcome. “A lot of people are using it and donating to it. The best part is that many people are benefiting from it!” Amanda is from Troop 60727 and has been a member of Girl Scouts for 13 years. She said, “Girl Scouts made me care about others in my community. It made me realize that you need to take action if you want to help make a difference in society.” Rachel VanWinkle’s passion for animals led her to work with Seneca Park Zoo on a project to enrich the living environment of zoo animals. “The issue my project addressed was the problem of zoo environments not effectively resembling an animal’s natural habitat. The enrichment for animals is used in a manner that allows them to increase their activities, stimulate natural behavior, and enhance their psychological and physical needs,” she said. “My project involved working with the zoo coordinators to establish animal needs, making enrichment toys and making a loom to be kept at the zoo which will allow zoo staff to continue to make additional enrichment toys.” Rachel is from Troop Rachel VanWinkle 60235 and has been a member of Girl Scouts for 12 years. She said, “Girl Scouts has helped me develop good work ethic, working well with a team and using leadership skills.” For more information on Girl Scouts or the Girl Scout Gold Award, visit gswny.org. One soldier’s experience with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder at the last minute, I probably wouldn’t have seen my 26th birthday, from the outside, I was still me. On the inside, these memories are defining moments, “you can’t unsee a suicide bomber attack” or all the other memories associated with combat. Again, from the outside, for the most part, you can’t tell what another person has experienced, but these memories tend to pop up at unexpected times. A child’s nosebleed triggers a memory you’re not equipped to deal with as you comfort the child in the middle of the night. That’s PTSD. It’s your past fighting with your present, and no one on the outside can see that battle. I cannot describe the weight of command, especially in a combat environment. As a junior officer, I was given the responsibility of leading an amazing team of men and women. The mantra of “mission first, people always” was a heavy reminder that it was my job to maintain a balance of keeping my soldiers safe and accomplishing our mission. I wasn’t always successful at either, but we all came home alive. Today, my office is built for our “Zoom world.” Behind me hang the awards and pictures that represent the proverbial “T-shirt” as in been there, done that, I’ve got the T-shirt to prove it. In front of me, out of view of the camera, a collection of bracelets, each inscribed with the name of a friend or colleague I’ve lost, either to our enemies abroad or the demons within. So, while the world sees all my accomplishments, I am confronted with my why – the friends I’ve lost. There is one in particular that inspires me to do more every day – the one I couldn’t save. Every loss is painful. As I mentioned, I was lucky; I had amazing NCOs and soldiers, they are truly exceptional, and many continue to serve our great nation. During our deployment in 2006, I honestly lost count of how many times we came into contact with the enemy; the suicide bomber was the worst, but not the only attack. We were lucky, we lost friends while we were out on mission, but when those wheels touched U.S. soil, we had all made it back. June 16, 2019, was Father’s Day, and I was up early, partially because I don’t sleep well and partially because I enjoy the peace of the early morning. I learned through Facebook that I had failed. That night one of my soldiers had taken his own life. This was not my first, second, or tenth time dealing with suicide, but it was by far the most personal. There is a certain power and resolve that comes with the acceptance of a great loss. After that day, it became clear that while I couldn’t change the past, we could do more moving forward. We have a running Facebook message – which is mostly filled with the type of dark and profane humor that only an Infantry Soldier would understand, but it connects us, a constant reminder that there’s always someone there

who “gets it.” In the Ranger’s Creed, there is a line, “I will always shoulder more than my fair share of the task, whatever it may be.” With every loss, whether by combat or suicide, it’s our responsibility to shoulder their load and to carry the memory of them forward. On any given day, there are around 19 million veterans living and thriving in communities across the country. Joseph Reagan Approximately 22 veterans take their own life, every day. This is nothing less than a national tragedy, and we’ve dedicated an enormous amount of resources to trying to solve this issue. A recent survey found that almost 70 percent of Americans believe that most veterans struggle with PTSD, while 25 percent of Americans believe PTSD is untreatable, and those with PTSD are violent and dangerous. The truth: PTSD is treatable, and many of those who carry a PTSD diagnosis are able to thrive in their post-service life with minimal, if any, clinical intervention. The biggest threat to our veterans is the stigma we attach to mental health issues like PTSD, as it prevents us from seeking help. As a society and as veterans, we must do better. This same survey showed the misperceptions about PTSD were even more prevalent among the veteran community than our civilian counterparts. Steven Ambrose once said that veterans gave the best years of their lives in defense of our country; when they leave the service, there is a strong desire to make up for lost time. Veterans thrive in civilian life when they are able to find their why, their new purpose. By having these candid conversations, we can break the stigma associated with mental health and make it easier for a veteran to seek help when they stop being themselves.

by Joseph Reagan June 27 was National Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Injury Awareness Day; a day dedicated to raising awareness around the signs, symptoms, and stigma associated with PTSD. As a former Infantry Officer with two deployments to Afghanistan, this issue is deeply personal to me. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has reported that somewhere between 10 to 15 percent of veterans have a clinical diagnosis for post-traumatic stress. That number is likely far greater. A recent survey suggests that over a quarter of our population believes PTSD is incurable, and those who have it are dangerous and mentally unstable – it is for this reason that so many veterans refuse to seek help. Twentytwo veterans will take their own life today; two-thirds of them will have never stepped foot inside a VA facility – 15 veterans will die today without ever asking for help. The redeployment process was like an assembly line, 2,600 soldiers going from office to office getting their checklist signed off by each one (dental, vision, finance, etc.). The mental health station was no different; walk in, answer a few questions, get your sheet stamped, and leave. It was June of 2006; I had returned a week earlier from a 16-month deployment to Afghanistan. I walked into the mental health office, and without looking up, a man asked, “What was the worst thing you experienced while you were deployed?” I proceeded to tell him, in detail, about the suicide bomber attack on my platoon that resulted in every member of the platoon being awarded the Purple Heart. He looked up at me and said, “Lieutenant, that is the worst story I’ve heard all day.” He left me with one question “Am I still me?” I said yes, partially because I thought it was true, but partially because I knew if I said no, it would mean an early end to my career. Over 30 soldiers would recount the same attack that day, 30 soldiers would answer “Yes, I’m good,” and walk out of the office with their paper stamped “cleared MENTAL HEALTH” and start preparing for the next deployment. Fast forward a few years; I left the military, used my GI bill to get a master’s degree, and had started a new career in management consulting. The guidance most people gave to veterans starting civilian careers was to not talk about being a veteran, so I did not. During a conversation with a colleague, I happened to mention my service because it was related to the topic at hand. My colleague stopped and said, “I didn’t know you were in the Military; you’re remarkably well adjusted.” Not exactly a compliment but also not far from the truth – from the outside, I was a normal businessman, from the outside, you could never tell that had it not been for an Afghan guard who grabbed the suicide bomber

Note: Joseph Reagan is the Director of Military and Veterans Outreach for Wreaths Across America. He has over ten years of experience working with leaders within government, nonprofit, and Fortune 500 companies to develop sustainable strategies supporting National Security and Veterans Health. He served eight years on active duty as an officer in the U.S. Army, including two tours to Afghanistan with the 10th Mountain Division. He is a graduate of Norwich University, the oldest private military college in the country.

Red Cross still facing severe blood shortage The American Red Cross continues to experience a severe blood shortage that is negatively affecting blood product availability across the country. Donors of all blood types – especially type O and those giving platelets – are urged to make an appointment to give now and help ensure hospital shelves are stocked with blood products. Schedule an appointment to give blood by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767), or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. As a thank-you, all those who come to give through July 6 will receive a Red Cross embroidered hat (while supplies last). And, donors who come to give July 7 through 31 will receive a $10 Amazon.com gift card by email, plus a chance to win gas for a year (a $5,000 value). Terms and conditions apply; visit rcblood.org/fuel. In most cases, those who have received a COVID-19 vaccine can donate. However, knowing the name of the manufacturer of the vaccine they received is important in determining donation eligibility. Upcoming blood donation opportunities: •July 6, 12:30 to 5:30 p.m., Brockport Fireman’s Exempt Club, 248 West Avenue, Brockport; •July 7, 11 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., The Mall At Greece Ridge, 271 Greece Ridge Center, Rochester; •July 7, 2 to 7 p.m., Clarkson Lodge, 3645 Lake Road, Brockport; •July 9, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Gates Town Hall, 1605 Buffalo Road, Rochester; •July 9, 1:30 to 6:30 p.m., St Paul’s Lutheran School, 158 East Avenue, Hilton; •July 10, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., St. Lawrence Church, 1000 North Greece Road, Rochester; •July 13, 1 to 6 p.m., Brockport Fireman’s Exempt Club, 248 West Avenue, Brockport; •July 15, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Gates Fire District, 2355 Chili Avenue, Rochester. New documentary explores Erie Canal’s role in shaping America A new half-hour documentary, Floating Ideas: How the Erie Canal Helped Shape America, examines the spread of ideas along the Erie Canal with emphasis on women’s rights, suffrage, and the quest for social justice. After a television debut on WCNY-TV, the film will premier July 5 on YouTube. “The struggle began two centuries ago, but is just as relevant today,” said Bob Radliff, Executive Director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor. “Although the Preamble of the Constitution begins with ‘We the People of the United States,’ expanding who ‘we’ means to include women, Native Americans, and people of color has been a long and enduring fight. Floating Ideas explores the Erie Canal’s role in shaping the narrative and expanding our national identity.” The film threads together movements to end slavery and secure women’s right to vote. Themes include the influence of the Haudenosaunee on suffragists like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Matilda Joslyn Gage; the women left out of the suffrage narrative who faced voting barriers despite the passage of the 19th Amendment; and expanding opportunities for women today. Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor received a National Park Foundation Women in Parks grant to support the creation of the film. “This film details how the Erie Canal was an information highway, moving people and their changemaking ideas throughout the country,” said LaTresse Snead, Chief Program Officer at the National Park Foundation. “The National Park Foundation and our donors are committed to elevating more perspectives about the multifaceted history of the United States through national parks, including women who broke the norms traveling alone along the Erie Canal to gather and organize around their vision of equality, dramatically impacting the world as we experience it today.” “The Erie Canal is something New Yorkers and beyond so often take for granted,” said New York State Canal Corporation Director Brian U. Stratton. “A revolutionary feat of engineering built by many New Yorkers before us, the Canal and its banks hold stories of our nation’s journey to self-discovery and its struggle for equality. Just as goods and travelers passed through its waters, so too did the fight of women’s rights, suffrage, and the quest for social justice. Floating Ideas provides New Yorkers with an inside look at that journey and how this historic waterway helped shape our nation’s identity for decades to come.” The documentary was produced by WCNY Public Media for the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor with funding support from the National Park Foundation, the National Park Service, and the New York State Canal Corporation. The A.D. Oliver Middle School sixth-grade chorus.

Brockport’s Oliver Middle School music program receives grant Brockport Central School District’s A.D. Oliver Middle School chorus teacher, Lisa Lancia, along with Dr. Carrie Magin, received a grant this year for the school’s choral music project. “This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council of the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.” The sixth-grade chorus worked with Dr. Carrie Magin, a theory and composition professor at Houghton College, to develop a brand new piece of music. Dr. Magin worked with the chorus students throughout the spring semester. The group began by brainstorming for the piece they were going to help compose. Once the piece was composed by Dr. Magin, using themes developed by the students, the group was able to practice and then record it. There are just under 50 students in the sixth-grade chorus. After reflecting on the pandemic and events of this past year, students answered the following four questions in order to come up with the lyrics: 1. Name something that you are grateful for. 2. Describe or tell us about an image or something that has been important to you or that has brought you joy. 3. Name a challenge that you have had to overcome.

4. Choose one word that describes something that has given you strength. The full lyrics inspired by the answers the students gave to these questions can be found below. “This past year has had a profound impact on all of our lives. Allowing the students the opportunity to express their feelings collectively, through music, has been an incredible experience for all involved,” says Ms. Lancia. “The students have taken ownership of their song and have found that singing their own words, set to fun melodies, has been incredibly inspiring to them. As a teacher and musician, it has brought me so much joy to watch how excited they have been about this entire project. This has truly been a very bright spot in a very difficult year.” “What a pleasure and honor it has been to work with Ms. Lancia and her creative, introspective, and thoughtful students,” says Dr. Magin. “I’ve written a number of pieces for young musicians in my career, but because of the bravery, vulnerability, and compassion of these students, this project has been incredibly meaningful and will always hold a special place in my mind and heart.” Photos of chorus rehearsal have been compiled into a video accompanying the vocal recording of the piece. Lyrics: I turn around. I look back. I am grateful. I’m grateful for my friends, for my sister, for my parents. I am grateful for my family. I’m grateful for my cat, for my school, for my teachers. I am grateful to be alive. Skiing every weekend, and pictures of my family, my dog and how she comforts me, and seeing people happy. These times are tough right now. Mom’s in the hospital, my parents splitting up, the fear of being lonely. Improving reading, Stress and anxiety, I could not leave my house, I’ve got to be strong. Joy Breath God Love Power Hope Friendship Music Kindness Passion

Scouts prepare to send people “Over the Edge” Seneca Waterways Council Boy Scouts of America will hold its 12th annual 21 Stories For Scouts rappelling event on Friday, August 27. The annual fundraiser returns to the Kodak Headquarters building on State Street, providing individuals and corporate teams the unique opportunity to rappel down the outside of the building some 240 feet. As of June 24, 84 individuals and 11 corporate teams had already signed up to go “over the edge.” All participants must pre-register online at www.21storiesforscouts.org and raise $1,100 in either a single contribution or through collected pledges. A corporate team of six rappellers can take to the ropes for $5,500. There are many ways to participate in addition to rappelling: sponsor a rappeller or scout to rappel or make a general donation to support the youth in scouting. Proceeds from the event support the delivery of scouting’s character and leadership development programs for low-income, at-risk, underserved youth in Rochester and throughout the five-county service area of Monroe, Ontario, Seneca, Wayne, and Yates Counties. The Seneca Waterways Council partners with a global company, Over the Edge, whose skilled professionals run the event. It was one of the first Boy Scout Councils in the country to host an extreme rappelling event with Over The Edge and is the company’s longest-running scout-hosted event in North America. Stephen Hoitt, Seneca Waterways Council CEO, remarked, “Partnering with Over the Edge has allowed us to offer this unique event that exemplifies what the young men and women in scouting experience every day… and that’s having opportunities for personal growth and overcoming obstacles that block you from achieving your goals and gaining self-confidence by doing something different and giving it your best!” This “extreme” fundraising event is open to anyone interested in the challenge of rappelling a skyscraper or who wishes to fulfill a bucket list item. No experience in rappelling is necessary, and all participants also receive training before their rappel to familiarize themselves with the gear. Every precaution is taken to ensure that participants have a safe, secure, and fun experience from start to finish. “Since the first rappel 12 years ago, more than 650 thrill-seekers, people looking to overcome their fear of heights, and others wanting to check it off their bucket list, have harnessed up to rappel down hundreds of feet to have the thrill of a lifetime,” remarked event chair, Bill Schweinfurth. Organizers say that age is not a factor, and over the history of the event, young teens to individuals in their 90s have rappelled. The only requirement is the participant must weigh at least 100 pounds. To learn more about 21 Stories for Scouts and how to participate, visit www.21storiesforscouts.org. Provided information
