Spencerport’s lift bridge closing for two weeks The Route 259 (Union Street) Lift Bridge over the Erie Canal in Spencerport will temporarily close to vehicular traffic for approximately two weeks, beginning April 8, to perform final lifting tests and fully commission the bridge. While the bridge re-opened in November 2020 following a long-term closure, this work will effectively complete the rehabilitation of the Route 259 Lift Bridge, which began in 2019. A posted detour will be in place during the bridge closure, guiding motorists using Route 104 (West Ridge Road), Route 261 (Manitou Road), and Route 31. Pedestrian traffic can use the nearby Martha Street canal bridge crossing. Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license. Churchville-Chili Middle School artists share who they are “Behind the Mask” Eighth-graders at Churchville-Chili Middle School, like the rest of us, have found that the most challenging thing about wearing a safety mask is that it can hide their smiles and conceal their moods and personality. They’ve tackled this problem by creating expressive self-portraits that reveal the distinctly individual personalities “behind the mask.” “This project embraces where we are in this difficult time,” said art teacher Charmagne Dodd. “Students use their artwork to celebrate the positive attributes of who they are, employing graphic cues that reflect their interests and noting expression in their eyes.” The project, which originated with an art teacher in Tennessee and spread across the country via YouTube, uses drawing on folded paper to create two views of the artist: one wearing a mask, and one showing who is behind the mask. Churchville-Chili students employed colored pencils in a humorous cartoon style, adding patterns, color, hairstyles, and imagery to define their character. As the art opens up, they are revealed, with full expressions and words like “Funny,” “Kind,” “Generous,” and “Creative.”

Using folded paper, young artists were able to show aspects of their personality that have been hidden “Behind the Mask.” Art by Churchville-Chili eighth-grader Violet Everhart. Provided information and photos

St. George’s Church hosting electronics recycling event St. George’s Episcopal Church in Hilton will host its 11th annual eScrap for Camp recycling event on Saturday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Community members may drop-off electronics for recycling by Sunnking in the church parking lot, 635 Old Wilder Road, Hilton (across for Kelly’s Apple Farm). Computer equipment, mobile devices, office equipment, cable and entertainment devices, and other electronic devices are accepted for recycling free of charge. No refrigerators or other devices containing freon or gasoline powered equipment can be accepted. For every ton of recyclable materials collected, Sunnking will make a donation to Camp Good Days and Special Times, making this event a great way to start spring cleaning and help children with cancer at the same time. Excelsior Pass offers free, voluntary way to share COVID-19 vaccination or negative test status On March 26, New York State launched Excelsior Pass – a free, voluntary platform developed in partnership with IBM, which utilizes proven, secure technology to confirm an individual’s recent negative COVID-19 PCR or antigen test result or proof of vaccination to help fast-track the reopening of businesses and event venues in accordance with NYS Department of Health guidelines. Similar to a mobile airline boarding pass, individuals will be able to either print out their pass or store it on their smartphones using the Excelsior Pass Wallet app. Each pass will have a secure QR code, which participating businesses and venues can scan using a companion app to verify proof of COVID-19 negative test results or proof of vaccination. An individual’s data is kept secure and confidential at all times. As part of this initial launch, participating New Yorkers may choose to use Excelsior Pass to verify their COVID19 vaccination or negative test results as needed to gain entry to major stadiums and arenas, wedding receptions, or catered and other events above the social gathering limit. Interested New Yorkers can opt in to use Excelsior Pass and learn more at https://covid19vaccine.health.ny.gov/ excelsior-pass; interested businesses can opt in and learn more at https://forward.ny.gov/excelsior-pass-business. New York State is the first state in the U.S. to formally launch this technology. Excelsior Pass is built on IBM’s Digital Health Pass solution and is designed to enable the secure verification of health credentials such as test results and vaccination records without the need to share underlying medical and personal information. The technology is flexible and built to scale, allowing other states to join and help foster a safer, trusted transition to a post-pandemic reality. The pass can also be printed and is complementary to other types of proof that patrons can use, reducing any barriers to usage. A special emphasis has been placed on the protection of an individual’s privacy. Secure technologies, like blockchain and encryption, are woven throughout Excelsior Pass to help protect the data, making it verifiable and trusted. No private health data is stored or tracked within the apps. Excelsior Pass can be used to voluntarily show a QR code as proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative test result via a digital smartphone wallet or printed credential without sharing underlying personal health details. Multiple security systems are in place to ensure the integrity of personal health information. Excelsior Pass

Love, Pastor Andy For prayer or help, call me at (585) 348-7557. was designed with equity and equal access at the forefront. With multi-language access, a robust Help Desk, and multiple ways to use Excelsior Pass – whether you have a smartphone or not – New York is committed to ensuring that all New Yorkers can participate in the safe, convenient and responsible reopening of our economy. Several labs, including UR Medicine Labs, have committed to rapid reporting of COVID test results to the State Department of Health’s Electronic Clinical Laboratory Reporting System (ECLRS), which will help ensure that Excelsior Pass users are able to receive their testing results in the required window of time before an event. The state will continue to work with other labs and rapid testing sites to expand the list of partners and expedite reporting. Scott Wexler, Executive Director of the Empire State Restaurant & Tavern Association, said, “The Excelsior Pass initiative an important step towards stabilizing the state’s hospitality industry. It will provide our patrons with a tool to help keep them safe while returning to arts, cultural, sports, and the other social activities that make New York a great place to live, work, and play.” Provided information and photo

Gates Volunteer Ambulance receives PPE donation Wegmans recently donated 110 reusable N100 respirator masks to help Gates Volunteer Ambulance Services, Inc. (GVAS) update and expand its Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to a shortage of PPE supplies, including N95 masks, GVAS has had to send out the N95 disposable masks to be cleaned. This is due to worldwide supply shortages and the frequency of usage on a daily basis. Assistant Chief Dan DiSalvo noted that “on average, each person working a 12-hour day will use seven to eight masks.” The donated N100 respirators provide

a better level of protection than the traditional N95 masks and greatly reduce the dependence on the difficult-to-purchase disposable N95 masks. Each member will be assigned their own mask, which they can clean and maintain. It provides the user with an effective seal and allows repeated use. Assistant Chief Dan DiSalvo said, “GVAS could not move to this improved level of protection on our own without assistance. With Wegmans’ support, we can deliver the best care possible and ensure our providers are safe as possible doing so.” Provided information

Youth invited to participate in Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County 4-H program is taking part in the 2021 National 4-H Ag Innovators Experience. The experience trains local teen leaders to teach younger children how to apply STEM skills to address real-life agriculture problems. This year’s lesson is “Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge.” The lesson, created by the National 4-H Council and Bayer, is being offered to youth in third through eighth grade in Monroe County. It challenges youth to use STEM skills to solve a real-world issue while also driving them toward awareness of and interest in agriculture innovation and agriculture careers. Participants will explore this topic through hands-on activities presented by four trained teen leaders. In this collaborative and interactive challenge, youth can expect to: •Learn how human activities increase atmospheric carbon and contribute to climate change. •Plan a carbon-friendly meal by selecting foods with low carbon footprints.

•Identify carbon-friendly actions that agriculture, business and industry, and individuals and families can take to reduce atmospheric carbon. •Identify STEM/agriculture careers that connect to the environment and carbon reduction. The “Curbing our Carbon Appetite Challenge” is offered to any interested youth on Thursday, April 29, from 5 to 6 p.m. Register for this free, virtual program at https://bit. ly/3u8Pb1d. This lesson can also be offered in school and community settings. Those interested in experiencing the one-hour, teen-led virtual program with a class or youth group should contact Lori Koenick at lbk75@ cornell.edu to set a time and date. Common Ground Health launches COVID-19 Vaccine Speakers Bureau A new COVID-19 Vaccine Speakers Bureau provides upto-the-minute, vetted facts for groups and organizations throughout the Finger Lakes region at no charge. “There’s a tremendous amount of misinformation and myths being spread about both COVID-19 and the vaccine,” says Dr. Linda Clark, senior health advisor at Common Ground Health, who is spearheading the speakers bureau. “We want to share accurate information instead so people can make intelligent decisions.” The bureau offers a diverse selection of trusted experts: physicians, pharmacists, community health workers, researchers, and other professionals who can tailor a formal

presentation or informal chats, called “table talk discussions,” to a wide variety of audiences. Potential topics include vaccine development, myths, and distribution disparities, as well as basic details about coronavirus symptoms. Questions and answers can also be provided to give participants the tools to spark discussion using accurate information. “National and local research has shown that many people have questions about the new vaccines, and that’s OK,” said Clark. “It’s good to ask questions, and it’s important to connect people with accessible medical experts and accurate information.”

Clear and direct information from knowledgeable sources, who represent all communities, allows people to make informed decisions about how to best protect their health and the health of their loved ones. Speakers can address groups virtually or in person, with masking and physical distancing guidelines followed. Bilingual speakers are available. To request a speaker or to apply to become a volunteer speaker, visit https://www.commongroundhealth.org/speakers. Provided information

Hilton High School’s Geometry in Construction class building a playhouse for Assistant Principal Carol Saladzius’ daughters.

Geometry in Construction class builds playhouse for assistant principal Students in Hilton High School’s Geometry in Construction class have a special assignment. As their capstone project, they are building a playhouse for Assistant Principal Carol Saladzius. She and her husband, Paul, are building a new house in Parma and the students thought a playhouse that matches the main house would be the perfect welcome gift for the Saladzius’ daughters – Sienna and Bianca. “The playhouse looks amazing and they are working really hard to make it match the new house my husband

and I are building,” said Saladzius. “I am really proud of these kids!” Co-taught by Emily Gloss and Brad Helmer, Geometry in Construction involves using geometric concepts to construct house models and related building substructures. The class also studies site selection, materials, tools and equipment, and the environmental impacts. Students receive two credits for the full-year course and take the Geometry Regents exam in June. Comments Riga Recreation holds Easter Egg Hunt parade On Saturday, March 27, the Riga Recreation Department held its annual Easter Egg Hunt. The event looked a bit different this year as a parade was held instead of a traditional hunt. All egg hunters met at the Churchville Commons and were led up Main Street by Grand Marshal “Easter Bunny” and then down Buffalo Road to the Village of Churchville’s Steedman Gazebo. There they were met by Churchville LEO Club members and handed goodie bags filled with eggs. Participants then tried guessing how many jelly beans were in a gigantic water bottle. Arlene’s Costumes provided airbrush tattoos for those who wanted them. Thanks to the following organizations that made this a huge success - Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Churchville Lions and LEO clubs, Erin Maysick and her Girl Scout Troop, Arlene’s Costumes, and, of course, the Easter Bunny. David Thomas, Supervisor of Recreation Town of Riga

about business a special feature of Westside News Inc. offered exclusively to advertisers.

Oak Orchard Health receives funding from the American Rescue Plan Act Oak Orchard Health has received notification of award under the American Rescue Plan Act. These funds will be used to expand COVID-19 vaccinations, testing, and treatment for vulnerable populations; deliver preventive and primary health care services to people at higher risk for COVID-19; and expand health centers’ operational capacity during the pandemic and beyond, including modifying and improving physical infrastructure and adding mobile units.

“This is great news for all of us at Oak Orchard Health and is another reminder of the importance of all the work we do,” said Mary Ann Pettibon, CEO of Oak Orchard Health. Originally founded in 1966, Oak Orchard has grown from a migrant health project into an integrated health center with 11 locations - including Brockport, Albion, and Batavia - providing health care services for over 26,000 patients. Sunnking offers paid leave for employee COVID-19 vaccinations Brockport-based electronics recycler, Sunnking, offers a program to give paid time off to employees opting to receive their COVID-19 vaccine, as required by New York State law. “With me, having asthma, it’s definitely a no-brainer for me to go get this vaccine,” said Darien Payne, a Sunnking employee. “My first thought when I heard that is that they really care about the wellbeing and health of their staff and employees.” The private recycler has offered full-time employees four hours of paid time off for each vaccine shot needed. The program’s goal is to promote individual vaccination and serve as an example for other local businesses to offer the same benefit. “We’re giving all employees four hours PTO to use towards getting a vaccine,” said CEO Duane Beckett. “At Sunnking, we’ve always had a very strong health, safety, and environmental policy, and this is just one part of it.” Last year, the state listed recycling as an “essential” business, allowing Sunnking to

remain open during New York’s mandated business closures. “I don’t think it hurts to offer that to employees,” said Beckett. “It builds a little bit of morale, it shows that you care about your employees, it helps protect all your own workers and any customers, so we think there are no negatives to this.” In 2020, out of an abundance of caution for its residential customers, the private recycler had to postpone some local e-recycling events after staff members tested positive for the virus. The new PTO program should ensure that the risk of COVID-19 exposure is limited. “It’s always been on my mind to go get this vaccine so that way I don’t catch it, and I’m protecting my family members and others who I associate with,” said Payne. Sunnking employs nearly 100 people in Western and Central New York; however, it has made necessary changes to its business practice to comply with any health and safety protocols. Tender Loving Family Care increases minimum wage for its essential employees Tender Loving Family Care, Inc. (TLFC), a New York State Licensed Home Care Services Agency, has increased the minimum wage for all essential employees of its home care agency to $15 an hour. This increase comes at a crucial time when families have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Most employees can look for the increase in their paychecks effective April 30, 2021. In addition to the increase in minimum wage, TLFC has also enhanced its employees’ benefits by introducing a wellness and resiliency-building program that seeks to help staff cope with the effects of COVID-19 and beyond. This program, powered by TLC Virtual Resiliency, provides weekly virtual workshops run by licensed psychologists and certified wellness professionals for the benefit of TLFC employees. The program assists in helping all employees cope with stress, building resiliency, and reducing burnout. By increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour, TLFC hopes to alleviate some of the burdens its employees have faced as a result of the pandemic. “We understand that there are great, caring people in the community that have lost jobs due to COVID that may not feel they possess the skills for Home Care. We want to help those individuals return to the workforce by providing training and support for those loving people that would like to help seniors stay

independent and safe in their home,” said Annika D’Andrea, Chief Executive Officer of Tender Loving Family Care. “Our employees have been on the frontlines during this pandemic. We are proud to be ahead of the curve, as our employees have sacrificed so much for our community, and we are fortunate we can lead the way with this increase much sooner than required by New York State Law,” D’Andrea said Minimum wage is set to increase in New York State in phases, to $15 an hour. The New York City area will see the phased increase first, but it will be some time before the increase goes into effect upstate. “Here at TLFC we aim to create a rewarding workplace for our staff. Increasing the minimum wage, providing PCA training for those who qualify, and introducing the resiliency program developed by TLC Virtual Resiliency, Inc., are a few ways we aim to provide them with the support and resources they need. I am extremely proud of the resilient team we have,” D’Andrea said. Following the retirement of Robert Muesebeck, Supervisor Kevin Johnson has appointed Councilperson Patricia Hayles to the office of deputy supervisor. Hayles has been a Sweden Town Board member for more than three years and serves as the liaison to the Seymour Library and the Sweden/Clarkson Community Center. Some of her initiatives include a recreation survey in collaboration with Clarkson Supervisor Christa Filipowicz and former Clarkson Councilperson Jackie Smith, the re-cladding of the Community Center gymnasium, and a partnership with URMC to bring healthy living programs to the Community Center. In addition, Hayles worked diligently on the Seymour Library’s request for proposal for a consultant study and the recently enacted tri-municipal memorandum of understanding. “Patty has a great work ethic and has taken a leadership position on several projects and issues,” said Supervisor Kevin Johnson, “I believe she will do a tremendous job as deputy supervisor.” Provided information
