Dr. Farley presented with James C. Fallon Distinguished Service Award Dr. Ena Farley, a long-time member of Brockport Central School District’s Board of Education, was presented with the James C. Fallon Distinguished Service Award during the September 7 BOE meeting. Dr. Farley, a noted scholar of African American history and Professor Emerita at SUNY Brockport, was first elected to Brockport’s BOE in 1986, served through 1989 and was reelected to serve from 1989 to 1994. Dr. Farley was nominated by former BCSD superintendent, James Fallon. Mr. Fallon described Dr. Farley as a “quiet, strong and reliable leader on the Board who was well respected. She was a thoughtful leader, listened more than she spoke, but when she spoke, people listened.” The James C. Fallon Distinguished Service Award was established and presented last year to Mr. Fallon in honor of his many years of faithful service to the district. Brockport’s BOE may present this award annually to a district student, employee or community member who demonstrates the following characteristics: confident, expert-level knowledge in a given field; wisdom, leading

to effective judgement based in transparency and empathy; a commitment to the principles of servant leadership and individual empowerment; rigorous accountability to themselves and to the community and humbleness. There were numerous accomplishments throughout Dr. Farley’s tenure as a Board member that led to her nomination and award. •Dr. Farley was instrumental in the addition of the Fred W. Hill School to the district’s campus. Her support of an intensive study to ensure an informed decision resulted in another Brockport school. •Dr. Farley was one of the original leaders of increasing diversity in Brockport CSD. In addition to guiding diversity in the workforce, she supported adding diversity, inclusion and equity in the curriculum. This leadership resulted in the district being a county leader, and her work impacted the advancement of diversity throughout our region and state. •Dr. Farley was a champion of BCSD and a tremendous link between SUNY Brockport and the district. She helped forge relationships and open opportunities for students and staff. She actively supported the 3-1-3 program and promoted various programs with the college. Dr. Farley has expert-level knowledge in the field of education. She earned her Ph.D. in American History at the University of Wisconsin, Madison; her Master’s in Education at the Putney Graduate School of Teacher Education and her Bachelor of Arts in History (with honors) from the University of London, University College of the West Indies. In addition to her local work, Dr. Farley served as a Regent for NYS Board of Regents from 1997 to 2002. She retired in 1995 as Professor and Chairperson for the Department of African and Afro-American Studies at SUNY Brockport, where she taught since 1973; she previously served as Assistant Professor of American History at SUNY Buffalo. Dr. Farley was involved in numerous publications. She authored, The Underside of Reconstruction New York: The Struggle Over the Issue of Black Equality, Garland Press, NY, 1993 and over thirty articles in The Western Journal of Black Studies, Afro-Americans in New York Life. In addition to being an expert in her field, Dr. Farley has demonstrated a commitment to the principles of ser-

Dr. Ena Farley vant leadership and individual empowerment. As shown throughout her career and her service to BCSD, Dr. Farley’s wisdom resulted in effective judgement based in transparency and empathy. Her participation in the community and throughout our region and state demonstrates rigorous accountability. Dr. Farley’s name has been added to the James C. Fallon Distinguished Service Award plaque and is displayed in Brockport’s Board of Education Room in the District Office. For information on the James C. Fallon Distinguished Service Award, see the district website (www.bcs1.org) under the District/Board of Education tabs. Provided information and photos

Get out & grow! by Kristina Gabalski Naturalizing spring bulbs by Kristina Gabalski Now is the time to plant spring-blooming bulbs, and you don’t need a large yard to consider a naturalized bulb planting. A naturalized garden is one that is planned to look as if it popped up naturally. You can naturalize spring bulbs in garden beds and borders of any size as well as in open areas of your yard or at the edges of woodlands and meadows. Naturalizing mimics nature by planting in irregular clumps throughout the garden or landscape. For spring bulbs, it also means planting varieties that will come back year after year and that will easily spread without being too aggressive. Michigan State University Extension says there are a number of things you need to keep in mind if you are planting bulbs that will naturalize. Plan to leave the planting bed in for a number of years. As the bulbs begin to naturalize, the bed will take on a life of its own. Bulbs that propagate (reproduce) on their own are the best ones to choose, as are bulbs that are not fussy about moisture, light, or soil type. Finally, choose bulbs that are vigorous without becoming invasive. Naturalize bulbs in spots that require less maintenance. It is important that they can be left alone after planting. After blooming in the spring, leave the foliage to die back. This process can take several weeks. Allowing the foliage to die back naturally helps to recharge the bulb for the following spring.

MSU Extension recommends daffodils, crocuses, snowdrops, and grape hyacinths for naturalizing. Other options include glory-of-the-snow and winter aconite. When growing conditions are ideal, these flowers will gradually spread beyond their original location and give a very natural feel to the landscape. You may find that daffodils need dividing every few years to keep them blooming at their best. When deciding on a planting site, full sun really is best. Bulbs do best year after year if they receive adequate sunlight during their recharging period. Spring bulbs like rich, well-drained soil and also warmth to grow and bloom. Avoid wet areas, which will encourage the bulbs to rot, and lowlying areas, which tend to collect frost late in the spring. Plant bulbs in a more or less random pattern. You can simply toss them over the garden and plant them where they fall, or plant groups of bulbs throughout the garden or yard. Odd numbers tend to look more natural. Planting depth depends on the type of bulb you are planting. Follow directions on the bulb package, but in general, plant bulbs two to three times deeper than their diameter. For example, bulbs one inch in diameter should be planted two to three inches deep. Always plant with the pointed end up and the root facing downward. If you’re not sure, you can place the bulbs on their sides, which is preferable to planting them upside down.

Blessing of the Animals Service at St. George’s Church St. George’s Episcopal Church in Hilton has celebrated the Blessing of Animals for many years. This year’s service is Sunday, October 3, at noon on the church grounds, 635 Old Wilder Road, Hilton (across from Kelly’s Farm Market). The public is invited to attend with animals – large and small. “The Episcopal Church has long taken a pro-animal stance, believing that animals are gifts from God, and that people are responsible for being good stewards of the earth and all its inhabitants,” said Reverend Greg Kremer. In keeping with these beliefs, many Episcopal churches host an annual Blessing of the Animals service, which gives the community the opportunity to bring their pets and animals to church to receive special blessings. Typically Episcopalians celebrate the Blessing of the Animals on the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Francis, which falls on October 4. St. Francis of Assisi was well known for his love of animals. Through the service for the Blessing of the Animals, people remember and emulate Francis’ example of love for animals and appreciation of God’s creations. “In the past we have had animals of all kinds, including dogs and cats, reptiles, birds, goats, and an occasional horse,” said Rev. Kremer. All are welcome, but it is requested that animals be well attended. RSVP is not necessary. For information, visit http://www.stgeorgehilton.org/. Provided information and photo

Sweden approves quarry permit for six months At its September 29 meeting, the Sweden Town Board approved the Iroquois Rock excavation permit for a sixmonth period expiring March 29, 2022. The town usually grants the permit for a three-year period but due to concerns raised at two public hearings this summer, the board granted the shorter permit to be able to monitor the areas of concern more closely. Actions the board has taken to address residents’ concerns include: sent a letter to trucking firms that use the quarry reminding them of speed and weight limits on adjoining roads, the letter will continue to be sent out with Iroquois Rock’s invoices; requested additional patrols from the Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department and NYS Police; ordered a radar device that will be used to gather information about speeding and truck sizes on adjoining

roads; and filed a request with Monroe County for a lower speed limit on a portion of Sweden Walker Road. Some of the complaints have centered around blasting, however the Town of Sweden does not regulate blasting. Blasting operations are regulated by the NYS Department of Conservation. Despite the lack of regulatory authority, Supervisor Kevin Johnson spent three hours at the quarry on September 21 observing blasting and other plant activities. Councilpersons Gary Sullivan and Randy Hoke have been in regular contact with law enforcement agencies and Sullivan has met with residents at their homes to observe truck traffic. Prior to granting a new excavation permit in 2022, the Town Board will hold another public hearing, date to be determined. Provided information

An update to the story of Exile McBride Much has happened since Westside News printed the story of my great uncle, Brockport’s forgotten human rights crusader John Joseph (Exile) McBride, in March of this year (https://westsidenewsny.com/features/2021-0315/ancestral-pot-of-gold-found-as-grave-of-human-rightscrusader-discovered-in-brockport/). I have now gone from finding over 1,000 to over 1,400 newspaper articles on him that were published between 1870 and 1911. These are not only from the United States, but also Canada, Ireland, and England. I have also gathered documents from archival records at such universities as Notre Dame, Villanova, Georgetown, and Niagara. By searching Exile McBride online, one can see all of the growing news coverage. Exile had many years of connections with United States presidents – Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, Theodore Roosevelt, and William McKinley – working for both Irish independence and universal human rights. Now William H. Taft can be added to the list. Through my research, I also discovered that Exile had especially close ties with President Theodore Roosevelt. I have been giving presentations on Exile McBride and his lifelong struggle for human rights. I recently spoke at a Buffalo historical event and am working on possible talks in Rochester, Syracuse, and Utica. Having now accumulated many boxes of documents on Exile McBride, I’m planning to write a book. It will discuss researching my ancestry during the pandemic and discovering a famous great uncle who I never knew existed. Then the search began to find his missing grave, looking in six different cemeteries around Brockport and eventually enlisting the help of a ground-probing radar technician. The book will also include amazing episodes from Exile’s life, like his escape from Ireland to America to avoid being killed, leading the Fenians with the Irish flag in the Battle of Ridgeway and being captured, and later being kidnapped by undercover agents. In addition to U.S. presidents, Exile visited Prime Minister Gladstone of England three times, pleading with him to get the British government out of Ireland. Exile gave inspirational speeches on human rights at National Democratic and Republican Conventions. He also calmed the crowd that wanted to kill Leon Czolgosz, the man who had just assassinated President McKinley in 1901. After all that, Exile returned to the quiet setting of his Brockport farm, where he earned $500 selling apples in 1907. Exile dedicated his entire life proclaiming one universal assertion: Every human being was entitled to inalienable, God-given human rights. These included life, liberty, freedom, and dignity. As one of Exile’s closest remaining relatives, I felt that he himself deserved the dignity of having a new memorial. While I did find his burial records, claiming that his gravesite and gravestone were located in section H in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, they could no longer be found.

Due to the Columbus Day holiday, there will be an early deadline for all news and advertising for the OCT. 10th edition of Westside News.

ALL NEWS AND ADS MUST BE IN OUR OFFICE BY

WEDNESDAY, October 6th AT NOON THERE CAN BE NO EXCEPTIONS

Our office will close at Noon on Thursday, Oct. 7th and will reopen on Monday, Oct. 11th at 9 am. The public is invited to attend the October 9 dedication of Exile McBride’s new memorial stone at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Brockport. The ceremony begins at noon. Provided photo. On Saturday, October 9, at noon, the forgotten human rights crusader will receive some long overdue recognition and closure at the public dedication of his new memorial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, East Canal Road, Brockport. The memorial is located in section H, in close proximity to where Exile’s remains were supposed to have been. For the past 110 years, Exile and his message have been buried and forgotten. However, in rediscovering this former teenager who exiled to Brockport from Ireland, one clearly realizes that his noble cause is still very much alive and relevant in our world today. They must have a reservation to visit a DMV office. Those who already have a license, permit, or non-driver ID can visit the DMV website to apply to register or update the information they have on file with the Board of Elections. Applications must be submitted online no later than October 8. “At every step of this process (from my initial service call, through sales, to final goodbyes to the team that installed our new AC units) I was impressed with the genuine helpfulness, good humor, and professionalism of this business’s employees. What a great group of people!” - Mark D. “Called two other companies before them, not one wanted to help. Not AIRESERV, they came out, gave me same-day estimate, install day within a few weeks, and one-day install. Everything 100x faster than the other companies. The team that came out was A+. Asked questions to ensure I was happy with everything the whole time. Respected my property and animals; made sure gates and doors were closed. Cleaned up everything afterwards. Walked me through both systems so I understood everything. Just really happy I found a company that respect their customers. The front office taking calls, Tucker with the estimate, and the install crew... everyone was above and beyond in customer satisfaction. Hard to find companies still like this today.” - Michael C.

Brockport production of Water by the Spoonful is collaboration with Rochester Latino Theatre Company Elliot, a veteran of the war in Iraq, has returned home to Philadelphia wanting to connect: to friends, to family, to a job... to something. His Latinx community seems like a soft place to land, but issues with PTSD and an unplanned reunion with his estranged mother thwart his plans. Will a trip to Puerto Rico clear his head and set him on a new path? The ways in which he achieves new beginnings are explored in Quiara Alegría Hudes’ (In the Heights) Pulitzer Prize-winning Water by the Spoonful, which is being produced (in English) as a collaboration between the SUNY Brockport Department of Theatre and Music Studies and the Rochester Latino Theatre Company (RLTC). The play, a heartfelt and poetic meditation on lives on the brink of redemption, opens on Friday, October 8, at 7:30 p.m., in the Tower Fine Arts Center Mainstage Theatre, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. In the play, Elliot needs to follow his own path, but the paths for some of those involved in the production led to a place once considered “home.” Alumna Stephanie Paredes ’04, who is directing the production, is a co-founder of the RLTC. Taking on the role of Elliot is Will Ruiz ’08 who, after spending several years as a Spanish teacher in the Irondequoit school district, is now a certification officer in the College’s Professional Education unit. Having last appeared in a Mainstage production in 2006, he is “excited” to tread the boards at Brockport again after appearances with Pittsford Musicals, Webster Theatre Guild, and Blackfriar’s Theatre. Paredes is “passionate” about the play, in which she appeared as “Haikumom” during two readings with the RLTC. Bringing that passion to Brockport, and to a theatre department which she admits “gave me life” when she was a student, has her also feeling “excited” as well as “nervous, and humbled.” Her desire is to do the show justice, and

to “exhibit the rich diversity that can exist in theatre with a multicultural cast.” This opportunity to return to the department gives her a sense of responsibility. It was mentoring from faculty members Maria Scipione and Ruth Childs, along with directors Louis Moreno and future Tony Award® nominee Colman Domingo – who guided her through the Brockport productions of Maggie Magalita and Once on this Island during her senior year – that helped her uncover the rich diversity that exists in theatre and inspired her to “ensure that diversity and inclusion is embedded into the fabric of theatre arts.” About the play itself, Paredes’ passion “stems from being a human, a woman, and a mom.” With addiction weaving its way through various characters’ lives, the themes of judgment and compassion intertwine for the director, and begged the question “is it ever too late to seek redemption and ask for forgiveness? Performances of Water by the Spoonful will take place on October 8, 9, 21, 22, and 23, at 7:30 p.m. There is also a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, October 10, which will be ASL interpreted. Tickets are $17/general, $12/seniors, alumni, faculty and staff, and $9/students. They may be purchased online at fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 395-2787, or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. SUNY Brockport’s up-todate COVID-19 prevention guidelines can be found on the ticketing website, the Fine Arts Series Facebook page, and at brockport.edu/coronavirus. Compliance with campus protocols is required in order to attend any performances or events. sports &    recreation Greece Athena grad Shane Pease earns first college cross country win for RWC The Roberts Wesleyan College men’s cross country team hadn’t run a race on its home course in 24 months, making Shane Pease’s victory in the Harry F. Anderson Invitational on September 25 even more special. Pease, a senior from Greece Athena, completed the 8,000-meter race in 25:39, which was .3 second faster than teammate Jimmy Betts, who ran stride for stride with Pease for the entire race on the Matt St. James Cross Country Trails. The win, Pease’s first in college cross country, sparked the Redhawks to a second-place finish among 18 men’s teams. A history major, Pease followed in the footsteps of his older brother Keith, a 2017 Roberts graduate by joining the Redhawks. The 2021 East Coast Conference Preseason Runner of the Year, Pease shares his thoughts on several topics, including Saturday’s race, training through COVID and his expectations for the remainder of the season. His responses have been lightly edited for length and clarity. What was it like to be back competing on your home course? “I missed being out there last year when we were unable to compete, so I was really feeling the adrenaline. It was nice to be back out there on the course.” You ran side by side with teammate Jimmy Betts on Saturday. How specialwas it to win and record your first college victory in cross country? “That was a very special moment because we are both seniors. I have been on the same team with him since my freshman year, so it was really enjoyable.” Did the race go according to plan? “Our coach (Andrew Dorr) wanted us to do pack running. He is really a big fan of pack running and it usually helps runners out when they are running side-by-side with their teammate. Running by yourself isn’t the easiest thing in the world, so it is nice to have your teammate right there with you.” What did being named ECC Preseason Runner of the Year mean to you? Did it give you any extra motivation? “It was a nice honor, but I don’t think it gave me any extra expectations because I really don’t focus my attention on other people. I just try to focus on what I am doing and my teammates are doing.”

Shane Pease won the 8,000-meter race at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational. Provided photo. How did you train during COVID? “COVID was definitely more of mental battle than a physical battle. Some days it was difficult to wake up in the morning and work out, but over time I realized that we had a season coming up and I needed to get up and get moving.” How did you fall in love with running? “My brother was a runner in high school and he was really fast. Every time that I saw him run, he was winning races and getting a ton of support and accolades. In seventh grade, I was like ‘I’ve got to try this.’ Once I had my first win in modified, I was like ‘This is great, this is awesome.’” What are your goals for the rest of the season? “Honestly, I just want to keep getting better and better. I want to run faster times and keep seeing improvement, not just for me but for my teammates, too.” Why did you choose Roberts? “I chose Roberts because it’s a small, private school and I am not really a fan of bigger colleges. I wanted to develop close relationships with my professors, my coach and my teammates. Plus, everyone on the team is just amazing. I also came to Roberts because of my brother and his teammates. I got to know them and they were all great guys and I wanted to join them.” Provided information

Salmon Country by T.R. Hendrick Each fall, anglers from all over the country journey here to the south shores of Lake Ontario to tangle with the king, and I don’t mean that strange-looking burger king. I’m speaking of the king salmon - the hardest fighting fish in freshwater. I would not be doing my job if I let a September go by without writing about the salmon migration we are lucky enough to experience here in Lake Ontario. Jeremy Sage of JD Custom Charters was gracious enough to pass on a few tips for anglers on the best techniques to catch these trophy kings this time of year. Jeremy tells us, “Come the last couple weeks of August, as the nights get cooler, kings will start making their way towards the creeks and rivers that they were originally stocked in. That means the bigger, mature fish are going to be tricky to catch. They stop feeding and merely eat out of aggression. “The first sign that chinooks are beginning their migration to spawn is the color of their skin; it darkens through to a green olive color and eventually will be a dark brown once they are at the dams or up the rivers. “Most of the same baits you fish all season will be perfect for targeting spawning kings. I usually run a simpler program the closer and shallower I get to the piers. This means that the deeper the water, the more rods/lures I put in the water to target these fish. At first, light moonshine glow magnum spoons and big glow attractor and fly combos are my go-to. In my lineup at this time of year, I typically run a lot more attractors and flies than spoons. The attractors come in different shapes, which give the fly behind it a different action. Some attractors will make complete 360 circles, and some go side to side while being trolled behind the attractors; you would run something with a hook in it. Most popular are trolling flies - these Mylar/tinsel beauties come in many different colored patterns. I prefer to match the color scheme to your attractor. For example, with a white glow spin doctor with green on it I would try running a green glow fly behind it. “The distance behind the attractors is also crucial… typically 18 to 24 inches behind your smaller eight-inch attractors. This weekend, I will have two dipsy divers in the water pulling cut bait rigs, three downriggers pulling two spin doctor/e-chip combinations, with one downrigger pulling a magnum spoon. Depending on what depth of water I am working, I will deploy a second set of dipsy divers or run some longer lines far behind or to the sides of my boat. “Another deadly lure you should have somewhere in your lure spread is a j-plug type bait. These are wobbly baits that usually glow or are chrome in color and have a

NYS OASAS launches Kinship Care Toolkit The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS) has launched the Kinship Care Toolkit to support relatives and family friends who are caring fulltime for children whose parents can no longer take care of them due to substance use or addiction, incarceration, death, or other circumstances. The toolkit was developed in partnership with the NYS Kinship Navigator. “Unfortunately, there are many circumstances in which parents are no longer able to care for their children, often through no fault of their own.” (OASAS) Commissioner Arlene González-Sánchez said. “With the launch of this toolkit, we are giving non-parent caregivers the resources and information they need to help these children navigate a difficult time, as well as support their own well-being.” Kinship care refers to extended family members such as grandparents, aunts or uncles, or other extended relatives, as well as family friends who are caring full-time for children whose parents are absent or face limitations on caring for them. The toolkit was designed to help maintain family bonds and assist caregivers in having conversations about these topics with young people. The toolkit provides information on subjects such as grief, identifying red-flag behavior in youth, having age-appropriate discussions, and self-care for kinship care providers. It also includes interactive exercises for children in kinship care to help express their feelings and promote positive thinking and self-image. The new toolkit is available at https://oasas.ny.gov/ kinship-care-toolkit. New Yorkers struggling with an addiction, or whose loved ones are struggling, can find help and hope by calling the state’s toll-free, 24-hour, seven-day-a-week HOPEline at 1-877-8-HOPENY (1-877-846-7369) or by texting HOPENY (Short Code 467369). Available addiction treatment including crisis/detox, inpatient, community residence, or outpatient care can be found using the NYS OASAS Treatment Availability Dashboard at FindAddictionTreatment.ny.gov or through the NYS OASAS website. A beautiful Lake Ontario King. Provided photo. pretty erratic side-to-side action, which spawning salmon can’t resist. “Boat speed is very important based on what lures you have in the water. Typically, I keep my lures running at 2.4 to 2.8 mph down speed. That speed is taken off a temperature/speed device that I run off of my downriggers. It is very important to make sure your lures are running at the correct speed where the fish are, versus how fast your boat is moving. Sometimes these two variables differ big time, making this the most important tool I own other than my boat. “Into September, you can find these salmon right outside the piers and break walls of your nearby tributaries. Some charter captains fish right through to the end of September, targeting these same fish which usually forage the entire lake out to 700 feet of water into 10 to 15 feet. “Once there is a large congregation of these kings in the shallow water it gets interesting. You can go out there in any kind of boat that is safe for the conditions and catch yourself a 20-pound plus salmon. When I fish in that tight to shore, I run a lot of J-plugs and stick baits. These baits dive only three to five feet, allowing you to run them by themselves or flat lined off the side of your boat. I let 50 to 75 feet of line off and try trolling them off of my downriggers parked one to three feet down in the water.” Jeremy is a big dog amongst charter captains here in salmon country. He has put in thousands of hours on the water perfecting these salmon techniques, and I thank him for passing them on. For anglers who don’t have a boat and want to latch on to a fish of a lifetime, contact Jeremy at JD Custom Charters (jdscustomcharters.com), Jeremy Sage’s Facebook page, or call 585-734-8930. If you are interested in making a lifelong memory while adding a picture to your phone that you can bore people with for years, go catch a king salmon.
