Sweden assessment notices sent out April 1 The Town of Sweden assessor sent out 4,114 assessment notices on April 1. Most residential property owners will see an assessment increase of about 16%; the only type of property not seeing an increase is tillable agricultural land. An increase in assessment does not necessarily mean a property tax increase. If all taxable properties rise by about the same percentage, each property’s share of the community’s tax burden remains about the same. It is only an increase in the tax levy that would then create an increase in an individual’s taxes. The first taxing authority to use the new assessments is the school district; that tax bill comes out in September. Next will be the county, town, and fire district tax bills in January 2023. The last taxing authority to use the new assessment roll is the Village of Brockport in June 2023. The upcoming Village of Brockport tax bill will not make use of the new assessments. This is because the new assessment roll is not finalized until July 1 each year, after the Village’s budget has been adopted and tax levy set. Those property owners who do not believe they can sell their home at the new value may make an appointment with the Assessor (be sure to have an appraisal, market analysis, or home inspection in hand) or schedule a walk-through. Grievance Day will be held Tuesday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sweden Town Park Lodge, 4761 Redman Road. Appointments are recommended. Call 637-8683 for more information or an appointment. Members of the Hilton DPW joined Village officials for a ribbon cutting for six new electric vehicle charging stations at Hovey Street.

New EV charging stations installed in Hilton Six new electric vehicle (EV) chargers have been installed at Hovey Street in the village of Hilton. The chargers are available for residents and visitors and help support access to local amenities and clean transportation choices. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Wednesday, March 9. Mayor Joe Lee commented, “Hilton is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. We want to do our part to have a greener community for years to come by adding this valuable service available to everyone.” “We are excited to provide this new service as more of our community members choose EVs,” said Village of Hilton Vice Mayor Andrew Fowler. “Public charging infrastructure is vital to our renters who may not be able to charge as easily at home and to the visitors we encourage to drive over to Hilton and explore our beautiful village as they power up.” The new charging stations were made possible by support from New York State’s Charge Ready NY program, administered by the New York State Energy Research

and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Mayor Joe Lee, Village Manager Shari Wilson Pearce, and Trustees Larry Speer, Shannon Zabelny, Andy Fowler, and Sherry Farrell as well as Hilton DPW staff were instrumental in the implementation of this project. The Village of Hilton had previously completed five Clean Energy Action Items to become a Clean Energy Community. The addition of the six charging stations should bring the Village to a total of six Action Items completed. This effort complements New York State’s nation-leading climate and clean energy goals as outlined in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act to lower greenhouse gas emissions 85 percent by 2050, lowering emissions from vehicles and improving access to charging stations. New York State has the goal of amplifying the number of charging stations statewide to 50,000 by 2025 and that all new passenger cars and trucks sold be zero emissions by 2035. Brockport High School’s “Cereal for Ukraine” collection was a great success with 1,100 boxes donated. A sticker that read in Ukrainian, “We are thinking of you, from Brockport HS, Brockport, NY,” was placed on each box. Before packing up the donations, including a donation from members of the Brockport Police Department (left), students arranged the boxes in a domino line that wound through the hall and school cafeteria and took a video as they fell. The mystery of the Hilton phone booth An old wood phone booth is one of the many artifacts that the Parma-Hilton Historical Society (PHHS) has on display in its collection. Visitors to the PHHS Museum, 1300 Hilton Parma Corners Road, have often asked, “Where did the phone booth come from?” Truthfully, the PHHS isn’t certain. Recently, curiosity led the PHHS to contact former Hilton Mayor Larry Gursslin to ask what he knew. In an email reply, Gursslin said that, during his tenure as mayor, he visited local businessman Al Gioia at the Cold Storage at 7 Upton Street, and the phone booth was sitting in pieces on a pallet there. Gursslin said he asked Mr. Gioia where it came from and was told: “It came from Main Street.” Some time later, Gursslin was able to acquire the phone booth, and for a number of years, it was stored in the Village garage. Later, the Historical Society was asked if they wanted it for the museum, and it was delivered to PHHS, where it was rebuilt and put on display, even with a working payphone. What is known is that it could not have been in any of the buildings destroyed in the Great Fire of 1965. A local resident who lived in the village said the only outside phone booth he knew of was a metal one outside the old Hiltonia Theater, later the Hiltonia Bowling Alley. So, it must have been inside one of the many stores or other businesses on Main Street. If anyone has any other clues or information, contact the PHHS. They would love to solve this Mystery of the Museum. Those wishing to see this artifact of the pre-cell phone days or show children or grandchildren how calls were made “back in the day” may once again do so as the Parma Hilton Historical Society Museum opens for its 2022 season on Sunday, April 3. The museum will be open on Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m., except for Easter, Memorial, Independence, and Labor Day weekends, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day. PHHS has decided to extend its season

this year to the Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 27. All are welcome to stop by. The phone booth is one of many items on display to show what life was like in the late 1800s through the early/mid-1900s. Group tours can be arranged by contacting the museum office at 392-9496 or 748-9411. Provided information and photo

SUNY Brockport dance students present MFA thesis works After a two-year hiatus, the Department of Dance at SUNY Brockport returns to presentations of their graduate students’ MFA Thesis Works in several locations on campus and throughout the region this spring. Each of the events will be free, with donations accepted at the door. For additional information, contact the dance department at 395-2153. The choreographers showing their works include: •Carey Barnette – April 13, 7:30 p.m., Hartwell Dance Theater, Hartwell Hall, Kenyon Street, Brockport. Inspired by the history of sideshows, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and disability dance, this thesis work reimagines the script of how we view the body on display. This work uses both dance film and live performance to bring together dancers of varying abilities from around the U.S. and Canada. •Natalia Lisina – April 16, 1 and 3 p.m., St. Joseph Park, 108 Franklin Street, Rochester. In this thesis project, Natalia Lisina, together with other students and alumni of SUNY Brockport, invites the audience to participate in an

experiential, multisensory site-specific dance performance amidst the ruins of St. Joseph Church, now maintained as a park. The audience will be taken for a tour around the ruins and will explore themes of memory and loss as we engage in a creative transformation of a “dead space” into a “live place” in a movement dialogue. Lisina will engage with the audience for comments, questions, and feedback following the show. •Megan Deshotel – April 29 and 30, 7:30 p.m., Rose L. Strasser Studio at Hartwell Hall, Kenyon Street, Brockport. Athleticism and balance drive the athletic artists in this work. In addition to the piece, the choreographer, Megan Deshotel, created a cross-training program that catered to the overall fitness and wellness of the dancer, emphasizing building strength. After the performance, there will be a Q&A session to discuss the cross-training program. SUNY Brockport’s up-to-date COVID-19 prevention guidelines can be found on the ticketing website, the Fine Arts Series Facebook page, and at https://brockport.edu/ coronavirus/spring_2022.html Provided information

What are you thinking?

Dismayed by article

I understand that it feels really good and right when we band together for a common cause, in the case of the “People’s Convoy” for relief from COVID mandates. But I have to ask, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING? The trucks are driving around D.C. every day for hundreds of miles, yet I dare say you are all complaining mightily about the high cost of gas? What sense does that make? You are collecting lots of food to ship to the protestors so they can continue to do this when there are millions of refugees displaced by Putin’s war on Ukraine. They are hungry, homeless, and suffering from the blasts of being attacked by Putin’s war machine, and you’re collecting food for people who are protesting masks and vaccines that have saved thousands of lives in the U.S.? What sense does that make? We Americans are so free, so comfortable, so wealthy that some of us seem to have lost our way, protesting what is good, supporting people who do us harm. Take a look at today’s news from Ukraine, take a deep breath, and thank God for the bounty of our lives. At the same time, I respectfully request that you put your goodwill and good hearts to better use than the “People’s Convoy.”

I am writing to express my dismay with the large, extensive article about this delusional group of protesters. I fully support the First Amendment right of every single person in our delightful country. But truth be told, this is a not very subtle protest about the COVID-19 restrictions, which were instituted to keep us all alive and healthy. The restrictions were lifted across the country even before the trucks left California. Quoting a PhD who says the vaccine is not working is misleading. He is fear mongering and inciting. I will be carefully noting what businesses donated and will not be patronizing them. I, too, can protest with my dollars. Charilla S. Conner Brockport

COVID vaccines effective

As of late, I’ve enjoyed reading your publication and online news. It’s about time someone actually prints the truth about what the trucker convoy stands for, including the illegal vaccine mandates. I don’t much care for the liberal left’s opinions, but I believe all Americans have a right to voice their opinions. They call that The First Amendment. I would like to thank the writer of the recent articles touching on subjects that the cancel culture media refuses to print. Thank you, and keep printing the truth. Go Truckers!

COVID-19 vaccines protect against severe illness, hospitalizations, and death in the general public and in immunocompromised individuals. Pfizer vaccine is 95% effective in preventing infection in ages 16 years and older. In children 5-16 years old, Pfizer has >90% efficacy in preventing disease. The Moderna vaccine is 94% effective at preventing infection in ages 18 years and older. Severe illness is reduced by 90% or more in those who are fully vaccinated. Johnson and Johnson shows efficacy of 65% against symptomatic, laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 infections in adults. Evidence shows that vaccinated individuals who do develop symptomatic COVID infection have reduced rates of transmitting the virus. We expect more data on this to come from the CDC. All approved COVID-19 vaccines show high effectiveness (>89%) against hospitalization from COVID-19. All approved COVID-19 vaccines demonstrate high effectiveness against COVID-19 death. If you have questions or concerns about the COVID-19 vaccination, please ask your medical doctor or advanced practice provider about COVID-19 vaccinations.

Appreciates article

Disappointed by recent political bias I am disheartened to see such blatant political bias in your most recent issue. Once again, you cover the trucker’s convoy at length, which is odd because I can’t remember another national issue that has received this much coverage in your paper. There are so many stories to tell about how COVID-19 has affected our community. To devote an entire page to report on the trucker’s convoy a second time is wasteful. This would best be published in an Opinion column with the option for readers to offer the opposite, balanced perspective. But instead, you have given one of your reporters carte blanche to write about her personal fandom of this convoy and call it “news.” The disclaimer at the bottom is appreciated but inadequate. What is most concerning is the fact you published the following quote: “The Covid-19 ‘vaccines’ do not prevent transmission or infection of the virus.” That is simply untrue. Promoting this type of disinformation is dangerous and unethical. We all have biases and opinions, but these are best expressed in opinion columns and letters to the editor. Please return to factual, fair reporting on local issues and leave the political agendas to other outlets. Carrie Datro Spencerport

NEW PATIENTS WELCOME!

On Sunday, March 27, several members of Ferris Goodridge American Legion Auxiliary Unit #330 took part in a team-building event, filling pillowcases with items for children experiencing homelessness. Supplies placed in the pillowcases included games, small bottles of water, small juice packs, dental supplies, books, and underwear, just to mention a few. The pillowcases were filled according to age groups – boy, girl, baby, and neutral. Once filled, a total of 73 bags were taken to Deacon Dan at St. Charles Borromeo Church on Dewey Avenue. He then took them to Betheny House for distribution. The Auxiliary hopes to do this event again in the future. Provided information and photos.

Spencerport author’s book sales to benefit people of Ukraine Jay Diedreck of Spencerport has been busy during his retirement writing uplifting and enchanting novels. His most recent work, I Hear My Lighthouse Calling, was released late last year, published by Christian Faith Publishing, located in Meadville, Pennsylvania. All four of his novels are set along the sea-swept coast of Maine. Diedreck writes about his latest book, “A Victorian village, which I call Port James, and its proud lighthouse are found nestled along the majestic and rocky Maine coast. My main characters are Abby and Lloyd, her new man friend. Lloyd is an accomplished woodworker specializing in gazebos and cottage-like structures. Abby has just graduated from a local college in business and marketing. As the story unfolds, we see that she has a potential life-changing decision, which may include Lloyd. The ambience of Maine, her lighthouse and loving family flow from the pages like gentle ocean breezes and waves.” With his book sales in the past, Diedreck has raised a few hundred dollars for the nonprofit organization, Food for the Poor, and the same amount for Spencerport Ecumenical Food Shelf. He is doing a new fundraiser at this time with the sale of any of his four novels. All profits will be going to Roc Maidan, a Rochester-based Ukrainian organization that will be aiding the Ukrainian refugees. Through Roc Maidan, food, clothJay Diedreck ing, and medicine will be delivered where needed. Diedreck’s books can be purchased locally from Lift Bridge Book Shop in Brockport, The Unique Shop in Spencerport, and Alpha and Omega on Ridge Road West. His other novels are Klem Watercrest the Lighthouse Keeper, Seaside Journeys of Faith, and A Port James Romance. Provided information and photo

Many of them had questions about how bulbs grow into daffodils, whether bees and other insects pollinate the daffodils, and how the cycle of nature works along the trail. A spring event was promised. The daffodils have begun to emerge. As the temperatures rise, blossoming will begin. If the weather cooperates, the show will last over a month. Soon, the oak tree planted in 2018 in honor of Private Harvey C. Noone, the Hometown Hero who died in France during WWI and after whom the Churchville Legion was named, will begin to leaf out. So will the lilacs from Highland Park that were also planted in his honor in 2018 and they will be joined by the other trees that are part of the Village’s heritage tree collection. Timing a spring event to coincide with the Mother Nature is tricky. Both Arbor Day and Earth Day are at the end of April, but how far along spring will be is never a certainty. So that more residents, especially children, can learn about the Living Fields of Honor and the cycle of nature, there will be a display at the Newman Riga Library during the month of April. It will feature photographs of the daffodils beginning in 2019, as well as the life cycle of beneficial insects and habitat that they require. Included will be a Butterfly Puddler, complete with instructions about how to create one to attract butterflies to your yard. Of course, a walk along the trail, to take in the beauty of the daffodils and watch the magic of spring unfolding is highly recommended.
