Churchville aviator killed in helicopter crash by Joanne Michielsen

Ogden Town Supervisor Mike Zale presents the proclamation to Gary Parker (center) surrounded by Town Board members, Aaron Baker (left), Josh Hinman and Steve Toms. Provided photo.

Ogden recognizes Gary Parker for his leadership and service On Wednesday, April 27, the Ogden Town Board presented a proclamation to Gary Parker, the long-time chair of the Ogden Planning Board, recognizing his leadership and service to the town. “It is always an honor and a privilege to recognize individuals who strive to give back and make a positive difference in their community and Gary is exactly that type of person,” said Supervisor Mike Zale. Parker grew up in the Town of Albion, New York, and moved to the Town of Ogden in 1989. He studied Food Technology at SUNY Morrisville for two years and earned his bachelor’s degree in Food Science from the University of Georgia. He spent his career in the food business industry working for companies like Quaker Oats until he retired at age 56. When a friend approached Parker to see if he would be interested in serving on the Ogden Planning Board, he agreed and became a board member on March 23, 2006. He was then appointed as chairman

on January 1, 2010. Now, with over sixteen years on the Planning Board, he has decided to retire. He has loved the comradery that came with serving on the board and enjoyed helping the community and learning about governmental processes. He has particularly liked public hearings because they allowed him to meet and interact with residents. Mr. Parker and his wife, DeeAnn, raised three children and now have seven grandchildren. He looks forward to spending retirement with his family and pursuing his other interests like collector cars. Supervisor Zale said, “Gary’s leadership, experience and commitment to the Town of Ogden has been invaluable and appreciated by all. He has always represented the town well and ensured every decision made by the board would benefit the community. He will be missed but the Planning Board is in good hands under the leadership of the newly appointed chair Mike Baird.” Provided information

A Mercy Flight helicopter crashed during a training flight the afternoon of Tuesday, April 26, in Elba, Genesee County, killing both people on board, according to New York State Police. The flight took off nearly two hours earlier from Genesee County Airport in Batavia, approximately three miles from the crash site. Mercy Flight pilot James E. Sauer, 60, of Churchville, and Bell Helicopter flight instructor Stewart M. Dietrick, 60, of Prosper, Texas were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to State Police. On Wednesday, the National Transportation Safety Board said multiple witnesses heard a boom before the crash. It was determined that the tail of the helicopter separated from the aircraft and the tail rudder was found approximately 300 yards away from the main crash site. The cause of the crash is under investigation. After a three to five day on scene investigation, the wreckage will be transported to Delaware for further analysis. A preliminary report is expected within two weeks, but a full report will take months to complete. James Sauer started working for Mercy Flight in October 2020 and was a retired Army and National Guard aviator and New York State Police civilian pilot. He also served with the Rochester Police Department from 1993 until 2001. “We are heartbroken at the loss of Officer Sauer, who served a lifetime of dedication to public service,” RPD Lt. Greg Bello said in a statement. “He is truly a hero to the Greater Rochester Community.” Westside News ran a feature on Sauer in 2020 as he capped his 40-year military career (https://westsidenewsny.com/ features/2020-09-07/churchville-aviatorcelebrated-with-military-final-flight-tocap-40-year-career/). At that time he had logged over 6,100 hours in the air. Sauer began his military career in 1979. He was in basic training when the American Embassy in Tehran was invaded that year, and recalled how the mood of training changed to prepare for potential war. He said, “For a young guy from Churchville, I wanted adventure, but it seemed like I bit off more than I could chew!” He spoke about memorable missions doing counter-drug operations in the Bahamas, humanitarian support in Somalia, and being part of Task Force ODIN in Afghanistan.“Being able to assist our troops that were in the fight against Taliban forces really gave me a sense of accomplishment,” Sauer said. A member of Open Door Baptist Church in Chili, Sauer was a man of deep faith.

James Sauer in August of 2020. Provided photo. “I’ve had a long and wonderful career in aviation, but there have been many times I’ve been afraid of events. Being separated for months on end from my family took a toll. I’ve missed so much of my kids growing up where my wife had to take care of things in my absence. But my love and faith in Jesus Christ has seen me through,” he said. The Spencerport Fire District posted photos on Twitter of Sauer talking to students at their summer youth fire camp last summer as a representative of Mercy Flight. In the post, SFD said they were better for knowing him. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Sauer had not been announced at press time. Mercy Flight Executive Vice President Scott Wooton said in a statement on Tuesday that, “Mercy Flight has temporarily suspended operations in order to allow time for our employees to process the event, and to ensure the complete safe mechanical operation of our other helicopters pending a preliminary accident team investigation.” “It goes without saying that our attention needs to be focused on the families of those lost and on our own employees as we deal with this unspeakable tragedy,” Margaret Ferrentino, Mercy Flight’s President said. “This is a very dark day for the Mercy Flight family. We are so grateful for the expressions of love, concern and support expressed by many.” Mercy Flight EMS is a not-for-profit medical transport service that services western New York, including the Rochester region, as well as parts of northwestern Pennsylvania and Canada.

“I Am Rochester,” a full-length documentary produced by LifeTree Media & Movement, is about the spiritual and social history of the Rochester region. Directed by Pastor Garrett Wendt, and written by Pastor Mark DuPre and Wendt, this locally produced film has been nearly four years in the making. It premiered April 24 at Bethel Christian Fellowship in Rochester, and will be released on select streaming platforms on May 1. “Our goal is to remind everyone living here that Rochester has an identity of its own that sets it apart,” says Wendt. “We had the most transformative and powerful Christian revival in American history take place here with the Rev. Charles Finney, and we’re also the home of world renown reformers, Frederick, Douglass and Susan B. Anthony. But there is so much more that sets us apart, from the unification of the Haudenosaunee Nations to the great William Morgan and Sam Patch scandals to the rise of Mormonism and Spiritualism. Rochester has always been a hotbed religiously, and has been an influential center for unity, abolition, and the elevation of women. It’s time to recognize and reclaim the identity that God’s given us.” The film features reenactments of some of the more important moments in Rochester’s history, as well as interviews with many local and even national leaders, such as Rev. Dr. Alveda King (niece

of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr.), Kenneth B. Morris (great, great, great grandson of Frederick Douglass), Chuck Pierce, and Dutch Sheets to name a few. For information on the film or to see movie’s trailer, go to www.iamrochester. com. Provided information

Turkey Talk by T.R. Hendrick The pursuit of a gobbling wild turkey in the spring woods of New York is close to my favorite pastime, second only to doing anything with my grandkids. The pursuit of these wary birds has more highs and lows than a rollercoaster, but when it all works out, it is an adrenaline rush that can make even the most experienced hunter shake like Elvis. Spring turkey season in New York runs from May 1 through May 31, and hunters are allowed to harvest two tom turkeys per season but never two on the same day. New York State is not known for its turkey hunting like it is for its outstanding fishing, but it has a decent wild turkey population. The Department of Environmental Conservation’s website tells us the spring turkey harvest in New York averages approximately 19,000 birds and varies based on the number of participants and turkey productivity in the previous few spring seasons. DEC biologists expect hunters to take more turkeys this spring than last year. Hunters prefer to take toms (birds older than two years) over younger male jakes, so typically wildlife managers see a two-year lag between summer productivity and spring take. Overall, turkey populations are lower than a few years ago due to below-average reproductive success in two of the last three years. However, improved turkey productivity in 2020 will mean a greater proportion of toms available to hunters this spring compared to last year. When all is said and done, New York’s turkey harvest numbers have been going down since 1999. One of the main reasons is New York State has more predators than most people know because many are nocturnal and are never seen. The reason for the high predator population is no one is trapping them anymore. Trappers have quit because they have no place to sell their furs. The U.S. fur market is non-existent because it’s politically incorrect to wear fur now. Russia and China still buy U.S. furs from the Hudson Bay fur auctions in Canada, but prices are so low that by the time U.S. trappers pay to ship their fur up to

Joel Hendrick and Cove (greatest dog ever) with a heavy New York longbeard. Photo by T. R. Hendrick. the auctions, they are losing money. The DEC is doing its best to manage our turkey population and not let the birds go the way of the wild ringneck pheasant in our state, but with all these turkey eaters, it’s an uphill battle. All that being said, we optimistic chasers of the longbeard gobbler still go at it like there is one behind every tree, using our special camo turkey guns and all the turkey calls and other gear we can jam into our turkey vest.

Speaking of turkey gear, a recent development in shotgun shells over the last five years has improved turkey hunting. Ammo companies are using heavier metals such as tungsten alloy, tungsten-iron, or bismuth shot rather than the lead shot used for more than a century. These heavier shot types, sometimes referred to as “Tungsten Super Shot” or “TSS,” maintain enough energy to harvest a turkey at greater distances. In terms of kinetic energy, #9 tungsten can have the same weight as #5 lead shot. These new metals have added ten to twenty yards to the distance you can cleanly harvest a turkey. A turkey farther than 40 yards was safe in the past, but now 50 and even 60-yard shots are doing the job. These shells come with a heftier price tag, with some 12-gauge 3.5-inch shells selling for $86 for a box of five. Yes, you read it right: $17.80 a shell. I know, I know, you could buy the largest butterball in the supermarket for that money, but for the hardcore turkey hunter, these shells may be worth the price. When you do the math, the average turkey hunter in New York will usually only get one or two shots at a gobbler each season. In the grand scheme of things, with all the cash we spend turkey hunting - guns, decoys, clothing, boots, and calls - a $20 shell that might harvest the only gobbler you see all season that hangs out at 50 yards as they often do, might - and I use that yellow highlighter on the word might - be worth the extra green. If you’re a deer hunter and have never tried spring turkey hunting, you need to. Go back to the area where you saw turkeys during the deer season and listen at the first hint of daylight. Chances are there are gobblers near enough from their fall haunts that you will hear gobble off the roost in the morning. Then move into 150 yards of them on the roost, sit down, and do your best to sound like a lusty hen turkey. If the gobbler is alone, chances are he will come to see what this new hot chick looks like. If he’s roosting close to real hens, your odds will drop considerably, but now you are turkey hunting. If you should find that right lonely gobbler and you score, you will be hooked forever. Spring is the greatest time to be outdoors; you turkey hunters know this, so set your alarm to that insanely early hour and get out there. Remember to be safe and know your target. There is never a valid excuse to shoot at a sound.

OFC Creations Theatre Center, 3450 Winton Place, Rochester, presents Oliver!, Charles Dickens’ tale of a poor orphan and his associates scrambling to survive in Old London Towne. In-person performances run May 13 through 22. Oliver, a runaway orphan, finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the clever Fagin. A Tony and Olivier Award-winning show, Oliver! is one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture. As told through the lens of director, Eric Vaughn Johnson, a cast of professional adult actors brings this classic story to life for theatergoers of all ages. Performances of Oliver! will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 13, 14, 20 and 21, and at 2 p.m. on May 15 and 22. Tickets are $30 to $45 per guest ($15 to $20 for children under 12) and are available at OFCCreations.com/tickets or by calling 667-0954. Provided information

May is Poppy Month Be on the lookout for Ferris-Goodridge Post 330 Auxiliary and Legion members who will have poppies available for donations. All money collected is given directly to the veterans for their specific needs. Many will be sitting at various businesses throughout the village of Spencerport and some areas close by. You’ll recognize them by the canisters they are holding and the poppies they will have in hand, waiting for your donation. More information will be published between now and the Memorial Day Parade. The Spencerport parade has a ceremony at the end which always stirs patriotism in those who can attend. Here is a poem that will also stir patriotism in the hearts of those who read it: A man walked down the street the other day. The ladies of the auxiliary came his way. He took a Poppy and gave them a dime, He mumbled “Why do they take up my time?” He put the Poppy in the button hole of his coat, Next to some pencils and other notes, When he went home he placed the Poppy on the table, That red paper flower with a little white label. As he looked at the flower, as if inspired He wondered, “who put this flower on this wire?” He’s probably a man who once stood tall, And for his country he gave his all. He might once have piloted a plane, Now gives his all just to walk with a cane. His strong hands were a sense of power, Now he makes this little red flower. In our world we are busy with money and power While this man’s job is this little red flower. He still takes pride in what he has to do; Petal by petal he makes this flower for you. Next year when it comes to Poppy Day, I’ll be glad to see the auxiliary come my way. I’ll cheerfully give them generously For the veteran making this flower could have been me. Provided information

Motherhood by Joanne Dunsmore

No one can enter this planet called Earth without a mother willing to birth. We must admit, if she does not commit, we will cease to exist. From the moment of conception all her instincts dictate and persist to nourish and protect this life dependent on survival. Thus creating the unbreakable bond that develops upon arrival. Trusting God throughout the process of nurturing from infancy to maturity, enhances a deeper sense of security. A mother forever holds in her heart the unconditional love God has set apart for his greatest and most vital creation. There is no time of completion or date of expiration she is in it for life, there is no exception.

Comments Volunteers help pick up Churchville Park

Are You Looking to Grow Your Business or Organization? Please contact Lori Antonelli 352-3411 ext. 133

For the past ten years, Riga Recreation has participated in the Monroe County Parks’ Earth Day celebration by holding an annual Pick Up The Parks event. This year’s initiative at Churchville Park was an overwhelming success with 58 community members volunteering their time to pick up trash and tree damage due to recent high winds. We even had two bins filled with pharmaceutical waste products brought in by residents. Many thanks to the following organizations that participated this year: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Waste Management, Churchville Lions and LEO clubs, Newman-Riga Library, Chili Soccer Association, Wilkins RV, and students from Churchville and Chestnut Ridge Elementary schools. Many thanks to all.

Volunteers gathered before venturing out to Pick Up The Park.

Free Music Workshops at Rochester International Jazz Fest by Barbara Burke

For the past ten years, Eastman School of Music Assistant Professor of Jazz Guitar, Bob Sneider, has been hosting and conducting free Jazz Workshops during the Rochester International Jazz Fest (RIJF). From June 20 through 24, a series of five structured workshops are held, led by five different musicians performing at RIJF. The workshops are open to music students and jazz lovers of all ages. “The workshops started out as a one-day event the last Saturday of Jazz Fest. Originally for kids, over the 10 year history of the event, the program has grown into educational workshops that are an international arts learning experience for all. I call the workshops ‘informance,’ a combination of informing and performing,” Sneider said. Each artist leading a workshop approaches their presentation in their own unique way. “Some musicians work on specific skills, some on a single skill, all the artists play music that inspires. Everyone walks away feeling that they learned something new, recharged, wanting to practice and elevate their play. It has a positive impact on young musicians and inspires adult students to enrich their lives through music,” Sneider said. The workshops are also for those people who might not have the opportunity to get involved in music. “All students, adult and youth, are inspired. The very young children have no inhibitions, the middle schoolers are a little more involved, and the high schoolers are very involved and very present. Many go on to study music in college. It is very gratifying for me to see a kid who came to the workshop educational program go on to become an amazing player,” Sneider said.

Tuesday, June 21, Jazz Trumpet Workshop with Mike Kaupa, Trumpeter Mike Kaupa has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, and Japan. From 2001 through 2005 he was a member of the faculty at the annual Seminario de Jazz, in Barcelona, Spain. He was an interim professor of jazz trumpet at the Eastman School for the 1999-2000 school year and the spring semester, 2010. Among others, he has performed with Jorge Rossy, Ben Monder, Mark Murphy, Gary Bartz, Luciana Souza, Joe Locke, Mel Torme, and Ray Charles. Mike holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Fredonia State University and a Master of Music degree from The University of Miami. He is currently on the faculty of The Harley School, Finger Lakes Community College, Eastman Community Music School and the IfCM Collective.

Some that attend the workshops are not players, they are simply interested in jazz music and the process of playing jazz. As a music educator, Sneider works with area schools in their music programs. On April 1, Sneider conducted a music workshop as part of the Churchville-Chili School District’s Evening of Jazz. As part of the program, he worked and performed with the students. He also performed a short set with an all star group of Eastman School of Music undergraduate students. About the experience, Sneider said, “I am always happy to work with students of all ages. School teachers reach out to me periodically to do these types of workshops. It’s super fun for me, too. After the past two years of COVID-impacted education, the students are super pumped to interface with a professional musician. The students at CCCSD were just a delight to work with.” These types of special jazz workshops are scheduled directly between Sneider and the band teachers in the individual school district.

Thursday, June 23, Jazz Saxophone Workshop with Tommy Smith Tommy Smith is a leading light in European jazz, first and foremost as one of the finest saxophonists of his generation, and latterly as the founder and current director of The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO). These career-defining achievements are framed by his status as an international recording artist; a composer and arranger of extraordinary ambition; and not least, as a jazz educator. Friday, June 24, Jazz Workshop with Gene Perla & Adam Nussbaum, Drums and Bass Gene Perla brings decades of experience not only as a player but as an educator and independent label owner to the mix. He has performed with Nina Simone, Miles Davis, Don Alias, and Elvin Jones to name but a few. He has worked as an educator at Lehigh University, The Center for Media Arts and the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. Adam Nussbaum has shared the stage with such luminaries as John Scofield, Eliane Elias, Stan Getz and James Moody. He also recorded the Grammy winning LP “Don’t Try This at Home” with Michael Brecker. He is a sought-after educator, and Sonor drums and Zildjian cymbals have both sought Adam’s advice in product development.

Hilton CSD Board of Education adopts $91.9M Budget Proposal for 2022-23 At its regular meeting on April 12, the Hilton Central School District Board of Education adopted an $91,986,886 budget proposal for the 2022-23 school year. This is a 5.27 percent increase from last year’s budget, which, if approved by voters, will result in an estimated 0.75 percent tax rate decrease in Clarkson; a 3.26 percent increase in Greece; a 0.49 percent increase in Hamlin; and a 0.23 percent decrease in Parma. Based on a projected 10 percent decrease in the equalization rate in Clarkson, a home valued at $100,000 will see a $14 tax bill decrease. In Greece, a projected equalization rate decrease from 100 percent to 86 percent would result in a $60 increase in the tax bill for a home valued at $100,000. Based on a projected 10 percent decrease in the equalization rate in Hamlin, a home valued at $100,000 will see a $9 tax bill increase. And based on a projected 10 percent decrease in the equalization rate in Parma, a home valued at $100,000 will see a $5 tax bill decrease. “Thank you to the Board of Education; the budget development stakeholder teams; Adam Geist, our Assistant Superintendent for Business; along with the Business Office for building a budget that restores staffing, support, and opportunities for students that had been reduced during the Gap Elimina-

tion Adjustment,” said Superintendent Dr. Casey Kosiorek. “Not only is the proposed spending plan aligned with our strategic plan and mission, but it is also responsible to the district taxpayers.” The proposed property tax levy increase is 2.37 percent, which is below the state-imposed property tax levy cap of 3.25 percent. Voters will select three board members to serve three-year terms. The terms of Therese Flannery, Mark Hilburger and Nancy Pickering will expire June 30. The candidates are: Lynda Donovan, Therese Flannery, Mark Hilburger, Melissa Levato, Andrea Mendez, and Nancy Pickering. A livestream will be available and instructions on how to join will be posted at Hilton.k12.ny.us. Budget details are available at Hilton.k12. ny.us/Budget. A budget newsletter will be mailed to residents in May. The budget hearing will be held Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the Quest Elementary School auditorium. Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 shares update on renovations The Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 has been busy preparing for the summer season of rentals and outdoor weather. Over the past two weeks, kick-started by an unsolicited $500 donation from Legionnaire Mike Morris and his wife, Legion members Wayne McConnell, Tony Torcello, Ron Torcello, Leonard Smith, Craig Gertin, Geoff Larson, and Ken Juergens have worked to refinish the main hall floor. Gone are years of ground in dirt, grime, scratches, and old varnish. The maple wood was completely sanded and then vacuumed, cleaned with mineral spirits, and multiple coats of polyurethane applied, resulting in a sparkling, gym-like floor. In addition to the floor, Pack 156, under the leadership of Dave Brower and Wendy Bailey, spent an evening picking up the lawn and wood line. After bagging the trash and bundling the wood debris, the outside of the Post is ready for cookouts and lawn games. The Legion Commander thanked the pack for their work and for taking the lead to improve our surroundings. Thanks to these efforts, the Legion is ready for summer activities and rentals.
