• Go to the WSPR Intelligenz website: explore.wspr.ca Creating a new online account • Click “Register” to create a new account. • Enter in your personal information such as name, address, contact information, and password. Required fields are indicated with a * and require a response to save. Click “Register” to complete. • From the menu, you should now see your first and last name as the logged in user. Click on the menu icon, the click the Courses search, Enter in the course ID to find a specific course, or a keyword to search all courses that include the keyword. • Please have your VISA, MasterCard or American Express credit card ready

CREDITS & REFUNDS PROGRAMS

Full credits or refunds will be processed by contacting Reception a minimum of 7 DAYS for Pro-D Day, Winter Break, Spring Break and Summer Camps and 3 DAYS for all other courses prior to program start date (less supply costs). Full credits or refunds are issued when West Shore Parks & Recreation cancels a program or when a program is not convenient due to course changes. Every effort is made to cancel in a timely manner (3 to 5 days prior to course start date). Year Long Preschool and Out of School Care: Please refer to Parent Handbooks for program specific cancellation policies.

PASSES

Passes are non-transferable and a $5 replacement card fee applies if lost or stolen. Credits and refunds are not available for promotional or Regional Passes. A one-time extension is granted for leaves exceeding 30 days. Leaves less than 30 days may be granted for medical reasons (with doctor’s note). Extensions apply only to 6 Month, Annual Family and Annual Passes for WSPR and do not apply to the Regional Annual Pass.

Credits are valid for one (1) year from the date of issue. For refunds, payments made by Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Debit will be credited to your credit/ debit card (some restrictions apply). All other refunds are refunded by cheque and processed within 10 working days. Prorated refunds may be granted at the discretion of the Program Coordinator for medical reasons (with doctor’s note), relocation outside of Victoria, course withdrawals requested after the first lesson and from date of request for Passes. A $25 fee may apply to NSF cheques, and credit card or electronic fund transfer rejections.

Improve Your Short Game, Improve Your Score. Located in the lower park at West Shore Parks & Recreation. The JDF Par 3 golf course consists of nine beautifully manicured holes, with yardage ranging from 79 to 170 and seven water hazards, this course is ideal for both the beginner and the experienced player. This course will only take a short commitment of time and is conveniently located only 20 minutes from downtown. Play on a first come first served basis – tee times not required.

Join your family and friends on the ice for a great time on the ice at The Juan de Fuca Arena.

Stick and Puck

This session is a great time for skaters aged 6+ to practice their hockey skills. • No experience necessary. • Children must have full gear to use hard pucks. • Staff will be on the ice to provide pointers. • No glides available. • Helmets required for all regardless of age. • Pucks will be provided.

Duffer

This program is for adults (19+) to hit the ice for some fun, non-contact hockey. Full gear required. Schedule will be posted by June 15th.

POWERWEST ATHLETICS We want you to be the best skater you can be! PowerWest Athletics (PWA) programs emphasize correct technical skating including stride development, agility, speed, balance, quickness, and readiness through the effective use of edges. Our programs are unique in their program format, low ratio of instructors to participants, and are known for their professional skating instruction. Striding for excellence for 30+ years in coaching with novice to pro hockey players. Instructed by Mena Westhaver and her team of PowerWest Athletics coaches.

Focus on all skating techniques through the proper use of edges; forwards, backwards, all stops, transitions, fast starts and stops, cross overs, and more. Proper foot release, edge efficiency and body position are vital to becoming an awesome skater.

The Juan de Fuca pool has a variety of features and amenities. Our pool is fully accessible for swimmers of all abilities. Equipment and amenities include: • Male, female and universal changerooms • Steam room, sauna and hot tub • 8 lane 25 metre pool • 1metre diving board • Leisure pool including lazy river and tot slide (for sliders under 48”) • Big blue waterslide (for sliders over 48”) • Aquatic wheelchairs • Zero entry ramp into the leisure pool • Handicare motorized lifts in universal changeroom, and on the pool deck (provides access to hot tub, main and leisure pool)

For continuous lane swimmers. Swimming pace is identified through signage in each lane, and includes casual, slow, moderate, and fast. Water Walking is not permitted in continuous lane swimming lanes.

PRIVATE LESSON BOOKINGS A weekly lesson set with one of our skilled instructors! Bookings can include up to three participants with no additional charge. The primary booker is responsible for coordinating participants (of similar ability - within a 3 level range), and paying in full upon registration. 1:1 in-water parent participation is required for children under 3, and recommended for first time swimmers of pre-school age.

1:1 Parent participation required. Focus is on entering and exiting the pool safely, bubble blowing, front and back floats and submersions through creative games and songs.

Little Learners

14 – 23 Months

1:1 Parent participation required. Focus is on floating on front and back more independently, jumping into water, bobs and rollover floats through creative games and songs.

Twos in Training

24 – 35 Months

1:1 Full parent participation is required. Designed to introduce children to structured swimming lessons. To complete, children must be confident blowing bubbles, submerging and doing assisted front floats and kicks.

Terrific Twos

24 – 35 Months

1:1 Partial parent participation required. Twos in Training is strongly recommended Designed for swimmers to start participating independently. To complete, children must eventually be comfortable without in-water parent support and must be comfortable trying assisted floats, glides, kicks and games using a variety of equipment with the instructor.

Yellow Seahorse

3 – 5 Years

1:1 Full parent participation required. For children being introduced to the pool environment, submersions and assisted front and back floats and glides.

Orange Jellyfish

3 – 5 Years

1:1 Partial parent participation required. For children comfortable with submersion and ready to be introduced to unassisted front and back floats and glides.

Red Snapper

3 – 5 Years

Parent participation is optional. Front and back swims are developed and children are introduced to deeper water. Children will be skilled doing front swims with big arms and back swims. Recovery to the pool edge and comfort swimming in the big pool is required to advance to Maroon Starfish.

Maroon Starfish & Blue Dolphin

3 – 5 Years

No parent participation required. Front and back swims will continue to be refined and confidence will be developed in the big pool. Front and back crawl, side glides and changing direction in deep-water are taught.

Twos at the Top

24 – 35 Months

1:1 Parent participation may be required. Prerequisite: Terrific Twos Designed for swimmers who are comfortable submerging and blowing bubbles without parents. To complete, children must be confident using equipment to do floats and glides in shallow water and be comfortable performing skills off the tot docks in deeper water.

For beginners being introduced to submersions, unassisted front and back floats and glides. Parent participation is optional for younger beginners.

Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling and whip kick on the back. Stride dives are taught and endurance is increased to 50 metres.

Confidence performing front and back swims will determine advancement to Level 3. Children will be comfortable performing deep water activities.

Swim Kids 3

5 – 13 Years

Front crawl is the focus of this level. Diving, change of direction and treading water are also introduced.

Work continues on front and back crawl. Elementary backstroke is introduced, endurance increases to 150 metres and basic rescue skills are taught.

Swim Kids 8, 9, 10

5 – 13 Years

For children able to swim distances of at least 150 metres (6 lengths) and those that have advanced front crawl, back crawl and elementary backstroke. Ready to learn breast stroke, side stroke, and egg-beater support, while continuing to refine front crawl, back crawl and focus on endurance.

Front crawl, back glides and shoulder rolls are developed. Students must complete a 25 metre endurance swim to move on to Level 5.

Home Learners Program

5 – 13 Years

We are re-introducing Home Learner lessons during weekday daytimes this Spring. Levels are based on Swim Kids level equivalencies. Home Learner 1&2 Home Learners 3&4 Home Leaners 5,6,7 Home Learners 8,9,10

Lesson Cancellation Policy:

Prorated refunds or credits may be obtained if requested before the second class. Classes cannot be rescheduled. Makeup lessons are not provided. Register online at wspr.ca

Suit up for swimming:

Children who have not mastered toileting must wear a swim diaper in the pool. Swim diapers may be purchased at reception.

We will help you increase your comfort level and confidence in the water through floats, glides, kicking and swimming. Work with your instructor to set goals to develop your swimming skills. This program is an introduction to swimming with a focus on front swims.

Swim Basics 2 - Adult & Teen

16 Years +

This course focuses on developing the front and back crawl, establishing comfort in deep water, and increasing your endurance.

Aqua Yoga

A gentler alternative to a land-based practice. The aquatic environment can reduce stress on the joints, allow for greater range of motion, increase balance, build strength, and promote deep relaxation. Boot Camp is a full body workout, cardio and strength conditioning class all wrapped into one! Your instructor will simulate a variety of sprinting and hill climbing drills enabling you to build your cardiovascular fitness and endurance. Classes are for all levels, beginners to advanced.

Full body strength and endurance exercises will get your heart pumping, muscles working and body feeling great in this efficient and fun class! A continuous series of full body strength, core exercises and cardio intervals. Suitable for all levels of fitness. A fusion of indoor cycling (25 mins) with strength training (25 mins) for the ultimate balanced workout. Work through a burst of cardiovascular training drills on the bike then transition to a varied full body strength workout off the bike for the perfect pairing.

Gentle Yoga

Get motivated and see results! This circuit class will put you through your paces, working all the major muscle groups using a combination of weight training machines, free weights, tubing and body resistance.

Regional Youth Weight Room Orientation

This orientation will provide 13–15-year-olds with an introduction on how to safely use a recreation centre weight room. Content will include weight room guidelines and etiquette; cardio and weight training guidelines; orientation and instruction on how to use basic cardio and strength training equipment. (See attached program outline for detailed curriculum) Upon completion of this orientation, participants will receive a sticker which permits them to access weight rooms at the following facilities: Esquimalt Recreation Centre, City of Victoria Recreation Centre, Saanich Recreation Centres, and West Shore Recreation, Oak Bay Recreation Centre, Panorama Recreation Centre and SEAPARC.

In WSPR’s Move. Learn. Play.-based Licensed preschools, children have fun, build relationships and explore the world in which they live. Certified Early Childhood Educators who are also trained in fundamental movement and physical literacy skills incorporate basic components of physical literacy into the preschool programs. The aim is to give children the motivation, confidence and skills to be active for life. All traditional activities including arts & crafts, storytelling, music, cooking, indoor and outdoor play are incorporated each day, utilizing the amazing 109 acre JDF site, use of the library and Indoor Sports Complex, and special activities such as dance, art, sports, yoga and skating.

ASC will be a continuation of the Move. Learn. Play. based philosophy incorporating physical literacy, diverse art, craft and science activities along with lots of time for free play and socialization. Young Actor's Film & TV Acting Camp

Do you want to be on TV or in the movies?? Let's explore the world of film acting! Work with professional actors to learn the basics of how to approach a script, build a character, and film an audition. Through play, improv games, and text analysis, you will become confident in how to approach a script and create a real audition. At the end of the week, you will receive a link to download your own self taped audition. This camp is taught by Hilary Jardine, Actor and Owner of Circus Actors Studio (http://circusactors.com/). Trail Blazers

Piano, Ukelele and Singing Camp

Trail Blazers is geared towards older campers looking for a summer filled with adventure! This camp includes loads of games, the opportunity learn new skills & activities like archery, and time to make lots of new friends. Most of this camp is based outdoors so be sure to come prepared for anything that mother nature throws our way.

This full day music camp offers a creative and fun approach to learning about music. In the morning, campers will learn about the piano while developing good technique, rhythm and basic note reading and composing skills. Lunch time includes supervised free play time. In the afternoon, children will master the Ukulele. Each class is tailored to the needs of the group.

Introduction to Coding

9-12 Years

Discover how much fun it is to build your own game! Students will be introduced to basic coding skills with easy to use drag-and-drop software, and get to use those skills to make their very own games. Students will also learn how to create their own 2D vector artwork to make characters and levels that are entirely their own. The final project is a game that you can access and play or proudly share with friends online. BYTE CAMP

Dreaming of a career with PIXAR? Ever wonder how those awesome 3D animated movies like Shrek, Toy Story and Frozen are made? Spend the week learning how by modeling, animating and telling your own stories in 3D. You'll use Blender, a wonderful (& free!) 3D software, to design characters that jump off the screen and then make them come alive by adding voices, soundtracks and completing your own animated short film. Final projects are usually group projects with each student contributing a character and a scene. BYTE CAMP

Claymation Movie Production

9-12 Years

Make your own clay characters come to life, just like Shaun the Sheep! Participants will work to build their own clay characters, sets and props; develop their own script; shoot their movie scenes; and then learn to edit and add sounds and special effects to complete the whole project. Learn how to design, code, test and deploy your very own app! Use the gyroscope, tapping, and dragging or anything else you can think of to build your app from scratch. Fill your week with action, adventure and a lot of comedy with Film Camp in A Box Junior Lego animation camp. Mentored by master filmmakers, campers will engage in hands-on exploration of the stop motion animation process, including pre-production, production and post production. Working in small crews, they will learn about stop motion animation, set design, script writing and editing. Campers will then create their own stop motion animation and edit a short film and movie trailer. Each film crew will use a MacBook, and HD stop motion camera under the guidance of their own film maker. All arts supplies are provided. Using an existing pop culture song, campers will listen to the lyrics, learn them and create their own story and meaning. They will then act in and edit their full music video. Thanks to the Gender Equity in Recreational Sports Grant provided by Canada Parks and Recreation Association we are able to offer this low-cost girls only sports camp! This camp is for girls to feel safe to develop fundamental movement skills, become physically literate and gain confidence to participate in a variety of sports. Not only will this program connect girls with athletes and coaches to inspire them but encourage them to build the skills to continue their own physical literacy independently.

Learn how to design, code, test and deploy your very own app! Use the gyroscope, tapping, and dragging or anything else you can think of to build your app from scratch. Each day a new project is introduced and students are taken through the steps of understanding and working with the new code ideas. Students will get to work on their own project ideas on the final two days. No previous experience is required however BYTE CAMP 's 2D Video Game Design is recommended.

Rock and Roll all night and every day in our Music Video Production workshop. Mentored by master filmmakers, campers will engage in hands-on exploration of the music video production process, including pre-production, production and post production. Working collaboratively in small crews, they will learn about cinematography specific to music videos and advanced editing techniques. Using an existing pop culture song, campers will listen to the lyrics, learn them and create their own story and meaning. They will then act in and edit their full music video. Each film crew will use a Macbook, Final Cut Pro, an HD camera, tripod, green screen and aerial drone. Red carpet camp activities include the Amazing Movie Race and more… Family and friends will join us at the Film Camp in a Box Red Carpet Film Festival at the end of the week to enjoy blockbusters and, of course, some popcorn. Participants will be introduced to the skills necessary to become an effective youth leader and will build on their existing skills in areas including communication, leadership, teamwork, cooperation, behaviour management, job hunting, first aid certifications and more. All participants will then gain hands-on experience by working with West Shore staff during summer camps. (A minimum of one-week full-time volunteer hours is required with one of West Shore camps.) Program graduates will receive a certificate of completion and an evaluation from camp leaders, great tools to enhance future employment opportunities. A summer recreation pass is included.

Fused Glass Workshop

Bring your imagination and be ready to have creative fun. Make 1-2 art pieces using 4000 yr old Egyptian secrets and techniques. No experience required.

Pencil Portraits

Learn the basics of drawing a portrait and how to achieve a startling likeness from life or photo. Course includes study of angles, distances, mapping and measuring. Learn the use of values (lights and darks) to define planes of the face.

Watercolours

Beginners will learn about materials, composition, design, colour and medium control and techniques. Experienced watercolourists will be challenged to further their skills. Each session is a paintalong demo of skies, water, snow, trees and mountains. Take home a completed painting at the end.

Practical Digital Photography Beginners

Students will learn crucial camera settings. Technical and artistic components of digital photography will be discussed, demonstrated, and practiced under the instruction of a professional photographer. Enrol to get a solid intro to composition rules, lighting and pro tips for nature, people and travel photography. DSLR or mirrorless digital camera released in the last six years is required for this course.

PERFORMING ARTS Social Ballroom Level I

An introduction to a selection of the most popular modern ballroom dance styles including Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Cha Cha, Rhumba & Jive. This is a fun and social activity that you can enjoy for a lifetime and which brings many physical and mental benefits. As ballroom dancing involves two people dancing together, please sign up with a partner.

LIFELONG LEARNING Basic Dog Obedience

Join certified trainer Melissa Van Londersele for a fun course to learn the basics of dog obedience; or brush up on known skills with distractions. This class will have a maximum of 5 participants to allow for social distancing, and will be an excellent opportunity to receive more one-on-one instruction than would be possible in a group setting of regular size. Please bring your dog’s favourite tasty treats a 4-6’ leash and a flat buckle or martingale solar to class (no choke chains or prong collars please)

Italian for Beginners

Wanting to learn a new language or are you travelling to Italy? Join our interactive and practical class. No previous knowledge of Italian required. This course will cover basic Italian, grammar rules, and includes oral and written exercises. LAWN BOWLS Looking for a challenge? A competitive non-impact sport? Check out the Juan de Fuca Lawn Bowls Club. Lawn Bowling is a competitive sport open to all ages and levels (social, recreational, competitive and elite). The only equipment required is a pair of flat soled shoes (no heels.) Lawn Bowling is similar to curling except the jack is a moveable object. Men and women compete equally so it is enjoyable for couples. Social and recreational open bowls are played with optional attendance. Schedule or league bowling is available for the competitive. Our clubhouse hosts socials, BBQ’s and Pot Lucks.

2022 L.I.F.E Program L.I.F.E. assists individuals and families with low incomes to access recreation services and programs at all municipal recreation centres in Greater Victoria. The L.I.F.E. Program is designed for individuals and families in the Westshore whose combined gross household income must be at or below Statistic Canada’s estimated low income thresholds for 2021. Post-secondary students are not eligible.
