WestminsterSchool’s inspiring mission, which is captured in our motto, Grit & Grace, drew me to this wonderful school, just as it has drawn my faculty colleagues and our families since the school’s inception. We share the conviction that teaching the value of grit and grace to the next generation of Martlets makes a difference in their lives and their characters each and every day and ensures their positive impact on the world that they will inherit.
The third, but unspoken word, of our school motto is gratitude, and Westminster’s remarkable commitment to its students is only possible thanks to your generous support of the school, whether that is through supporting capital or annual funds, hosting receptions or serving in a variety of volunteer capacities.
As you will see in the report that follows, our school community achieved a resounding and gratifying affirmation of the people and programs on Williams Hill through record-breaking annual gifts in 2021-2022. These critical gifts work immediately to enhance and distinguish our great school.
Thank you for joining me and my faculty colleagues on Williams Hill in supporting our students and faculty.
With Grit, Grace, & Gratitude,
Elaine White Head of School

Whatan incredible year 2021-2022 was for Westminster School!
We welcomed our ninth Head of School, Elaine White, and her family to Pratt House. Students and faculty removed their masks as the many and varied limitations of covid began to recede. We celebrated the 50th anniversary of coeducation and invited our school community to learn from panels of accomplished alumnae of color, entrepreneurs and leaders. Seema Nanda ’88, United States Solicitor of Labor, accepted the Alan F. Brooks ’55 Distinguished Alumni Award at the culminating on-campus celebration in April — our first major event since 2019. We held our first-ever Mega Reunion, inviting 60% of Westminster alumni back to campus in June. This extraordinary opportunity to gather with classmates and friends from adjoining classes brought hundreds of alumni and guests (and a few RVs) to Williams Hill. Guests were treated to the infectious energy of Club Marty, which featured Tuey Connell ’86, Edward Connell ’92 and Mark McKay ’86, and alums danced on Commencement Lawn well past check-in. The Westminster Fund soared to record heights through the extraordinary generosity of alumni, parents and friends of the school, surpassing $4.8 million for the first time and enjoyed record support of both unrestricted and restricted priorities.
It is with genuine humility and pride that we thank each of you for that support. Your generosity empowers our community in innumerable ways. It offers immediate and necessary support to people and programs on Williams Hill. It provides for the margin of excellence that defines a Westminster education. It is a vote of confidence for faculty, who work tirelessly to support student growth and development in each realm of school life — academically, socially, athletically, and artistically. It provides resources to imbue the next generation of young people with the qualities necessary to lead with grit and grace. It is a powerful reminder that schools like ours were built and continue to be maintained through the generosity of many. Thank you for your support.

WESTMINSTER SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022 9

A Perfect Fit
From the moment he stepped on campus, Delando Clarke ’17 had a feeling that Westminster would be the perfect fit for him. The school’s setting on a hill surrounded by greenery, the dormitories with overhanging eaves and brown wood trim that reminded him of gingerbread houses and the bright, airy academic center were all impressive. But it wasn’t until he had spoken with Lee Hugely P’19, ’26, the varsity football coach for many years and David Pringle ’05, the associate director of admissions and head basketball coach, that Delando knew he made the right decision choosing Westminster. By giving back, I am helping to offer a similar opportunity to a student who otherwise might not be able to attend.”
After speaking with them, he felt confident that the school would prepare him for college, both athletically and academically. “I didn’t even apply anywhere else,” says Delando, a Hartford native who currently works in the city as an associate investment manager at Conning.
A dedicated Marlet, Delando currently serves as Class Agent and was a member of the Reunion Committee for the 2022 Mega Reunion. A Westminster-Hartford Scholar and recipient of financial aid grants, he has been inspired to give back to Westminster so that future students will have the same opportunities he had.
“For me, Westminster was a rare and very fortunate experience,” he said. “By giving back, I am helping to offer a similar opportunity to a student who otherwise might not be able to attend.”
Delando came to Westminster from Rumsey Hall, a K-9 boarding school in Washington, CT, where he attended eighth and ninth grade and established himself as a versatile athlete.
He credits the athletic program at Westminster with helping him develop his leadership skills, which he would exercise in college and in his career.
At Westminster, he played varsity basketball and captained the varsity football and the track teams. He excelled in the long jump, triple jump, the 4x100 relay and the 200-yard dash.
His athletic abilities earned him the most valuable player award in both football and track his Fifth and Sixth Form years and the Brain T. Bruyette ’77 Senior Athletic Award.
Beyond athletics, he appreciated that the school offered him the space to explore other interests. He was vice president of Chorale, Chamber Music Choir and the all-boys acapella group, Rising Sons.
10 WESTMINSTER SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022
Westminster also prepared him for the academic rigors of college. He developed an interest in economics, which became his major at Wesleyan, where he played wide receiver for the Cardinals before graduating in 2021.
And faculty members proved to be inspirational not just as teachers, but as mentors as well.
He recalls one Chapel Talk given by A-men Rasheed, director of Drama, English teacher and dean of student life.
At the start of his address, Rasheed belted out the song “You’ll be Back” from the Broadway hit Hamilton.
“I had never seen anyone with the confidence to do something like that; it was so impressive,” says Delando.
At that time, Delando wasn’t aware of the musical or the many virtues it extolled, those of hope, perseverance, patience and love ––– all of which have become the cornerstones of his adult life.
But he adds, “Looking back, it did become the most played song on my Spotify list that year.”

Singing the Praises of Westminster
Elizabeth Wilde Foody ’88, P’16, ’18, ’20 had set her sights on studying English in college although music was her first love. During her four years at Westminster, she was a member of Westminster Chorale and the Chamber Choir and was active in Dramat and dance. She also captained the girls track team and played soccer, but she found herself constantly drawn to the performing arts. Finally, during her Fourth Form year, Erik Nielsen, who directed the choirs and taught music from 1984 to 1988, convinced her to pursue her passion.
“I distinctly remember Mr. Nielsen telling me I should consider majoring in music in college because I was good at it and because I loved it. That was the first time I really considered studying music, so I credit him with helping me find my path, which changed the trajectory of my life,” said Elizabeth. But her inspiration for donating to Westminster extends well beyond her own experience. “My family’s legacy of giving inspires and leads me to continue to give back to the students at Westminster. My parents were generous and their strong history of giving to organizations and causes they believed in was a strong demonstration to me growing up,” she said.
Elizabeth has a deep family history with the school. Her father Peter R. Wilde P ’81, ’85, ’88, GP’ 16, ’18, ’20 served as a trustee from 1983 to 1997, and he acted as board chair from 1992 to 1997. He also served on the major gift committee in 1980, the Centennial Campaign Committee in 1988 and joined the Thring Society in 1993. Elizabeth’s mother, Nancy C. Wilde, was a longtime member of the Westminster Fellows. Elizabeth’s two siblings, Lisa A. Wilde ’81 and Thomas R. Wilde ’85, are also Martlets as are her children, Leo ’16, Simon ’18 and Annabelle ’20.
When her father passed away unexpectedly in 1997, the family started the Wilde Fund, which provides financial support to help students with resources, everything from backpacks to blazers. When her mother passed away in 2020, the fund was renamed Peter and Nancy Wilde Fund.
Elizabeth holds a B.A. in music with a concentration in vocal performance from Skidmore College and a master degree in music education from the HARTT School, the performing arts conservatory at the University of Hartford. Elizabeth is now Associate Director of Admissions at The Ethel Walker School.

My family’s legacy of giving inspires and leads me to continue to give back to the students at Westminster.”
She is also grateful to Westminster for helping her launch her own career. After she graduated from Skidmore, Elizabeth returned to Westminster, where she taught English, directed the girls choir, helped with Dramat, and coached track, all while she was working toward her master’s. Once she earned her degree, she taught music in Cheshire and Farmington public schools and raised her three children. When her youngest was in kindergarten, she worked in the Admissions Office and later as the Director of Operations in Advancement before she left to work in alumni relations at Trinity College. Before she joined the Admissions Office at UConn’s School of Fine Arts, she was a fundraiser for The Harmony Foundation, a nonprofit that raises money to keep music programs in schools.
Through it all, she never stopped singing. She is currently a member of two local choirs, and met her husband, Paul Foody, singing in a local choir. Music, she said, has always been a constant in her career, and her life, thanks to the support, encouragement and education she received from many teachers, advisors and coaches on the Hill.
“Westminster gave me a pathway to do what I love, and a window into how to do it,” she said.

WESTMINSTER SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022 31
A Welcoming Community
D.G. Van Clief ’66 came to Westminster straight off his family’s farm and felt immediately at home on Williams Hill. He credits the school’s strong sense of community for embracing him and for encouraging him to grow academically and athletically. His four years at Westminster were the most impactful experience of his adolescence and prepared him for the many challenges he faced in college and beyond.
When D.G. was growing up on his family’s Thoroughbred horse farm in Charlottesville, Va., boarding school never entered his mind. His parents, however, thought if he attended a school in a different part of the country it would broaden his educational experience. Indeed, it opened a whole new world for him.
Fewer than 200 boys were enrolled in Westminster when he arrived, but D.G. was attracted to the very strength of that community, a hallmark of the school that continues to hold true today although the school has doubled in size and has been coed since 1971.
To a 14-year-old Southerner accustomed to a warmer climate, life on the Hill in the dead of winter could have felt alienating, especially when it came to playing outdoor athletics in frigid temperatures. He weighed only 106 pounds as a Third Former, which presented challenges for him athletically. Still, he was encouraged by coaches and faculty to try different sports each season. He played football and ice hockey, although he had never seen a pair of hockey skates before arriving at Westminster.
D.G. knew he would not play at the same level as a student who had skated his entire life, but coaches Dick Hopley P’80, GP’12, Jake Nolde, Michael Jackson ’49, P’75, 83, GP’04, 06 and Dick Flood Jr. instilled confidence in him and he ended up playing hockey all four years.
More importantly, D.G. took pride in being part of the team and the “grit and grace” displayed by his teammates when matched against a larger, more competitive school. “We always punched above our weight as a team; we were so very proud of our school,” he reflected.
Academically, D.G. felt challenged to think outside the box, particularly when he was selected for Rankine Hinman’s advanced studies history class in his Fifth Form year. The experience boosted his academic confidence.
32 WESTMINSTER SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022 donoR pRofile
We need schools like Westminster to educate future leaders on a local and on a national level.”
English teacher Gordon McKinley taught him to develop his analytical skills, how to break down composition into components, how to compose his own essays and to think critically. “Westminster opened up a world of intense growth and development for me,” he said. After graduating from Westminster, D.G. earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia, and went on to serve as a Naval officer with the U.S. Marines Corps. Following his time in the military, he briefly worked at MetLife. But Thoroughbred racing was in his blood, and he soon launched a career in the industry, beginning in the equine insurance business, then in management positions with Fasig-Tipton Co., one of the largest Thoroughbred auction houses in the country. In 1982, he became executive director and later president of The Breeder’s Cup. He also served as a commissioner and CEO of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and was a member of the Virginia Racing Commission. He stepped down from the latter position in 2021 to serve in his current role as a member on the board of the Federal Trade Commission’s new Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Authority.
Looking back, D.G. said his education at Westminster prepared him for every step of his career and inspired him to give back. In gratitude to the school, D.G. has been a loyal donor to Westminster, giving consecutively for more than three decades. More recently, he joined the Thring Society.
“I have always had a warm spot in my heart for Westminster and I am proud to be a Martlet,” he said.
But he has another strong reason for supporting Westminster. “We need schools like Westminster to educate future leaders on a local and on a national level,” he said. “Westminster’s mission to cultivate and instill a sense of service in students and to focus on caring and working as a team is critical to our future now more than ever.”

WESTMINSTER SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2021-2022 35
sixth foRM pARents gift — ClAss of 2022
Westminster School established The Sixth Form Gift in 1998 as a way for parents of the graduating class to honor their sons and daughters by supporting a special initiative or project marking their Martlet’s time on Williams Hill.
To honor the students who lived Westminster’s motto, Grit & Grace, during the difficult time of the pandemic, parents of the Class of 2022 established and endowed the Campus Life Fund to support on-campus gatherings, off-campus opportunities, and celebrations that underscore our core value of Community.
The Class of 2022 Sixth Form gift total is $326,833.54. During FY 2022 the Campus Life Fund supported a wide range of social gatherings, outdoor activities and excursions, all of which made and will remain treasured memories for Westminster students. With gratitude from current and future Martlets to all who gave to the Class of 2022 Campus Life Fund:
