Meet the men who score the goals, talk the talk and have a brilliant time doing it!

Firstly, don’t let the name ‘Walking Football’ fool you, these men walk, run and occasionally skip around the football pitches at Westminster Academy Sports Pitches. Come rain, shine and sometimes even snow, thanks to the Westway flyover providing shelter over these perfectly placed pitches, the gang

are there ‘pitch ready’ every Friday.

As I arrived to meet Open Age, one of the players called over, ‘I hope you brought your trainers?’ I laughed and looked down at my office-suitable shoes and shrugged. They weren’t quite high heels but certainly weren’t pitch-appropriate. Open Age is a registered charity that provides a wide range of activities for men and women aged fifty-plus to get involved in the action, in a variety of settings. Russell is the man behind the men’s programme of events, which aims to help fellow residents to get out and about, meet new friends, improve

fitness levels and learn new skills. The full Schedule of activities on offer includes walking football, cooking lessons, listening to live music, learning new digital skills and monthly trips to places of interest in London.

Talking with the players, I learned about how two of them reconnected at one of the sessions after meeting years ago, losing touch and then recognised one another at a game. Another chap is a carer for his wife and going to the weekly sessions is a weekly hobby he really enjoys.

Russell’s enthusiasm for the men’s programme shines through when you’re talking to him, and he received

The chatter and jokes go on after the whistle is blown with a cuppa or a drink or two nearby. After spending the morning with them, watching them play and hearing all their stories and friendly banter with one another, I left thinking, I wish I had brought my trainers, I’d have been right there joining in!

Your new food waste recycling service

We have rolled out our food waste recycling service to suitable residential properties across Westminster and have collected and recycled over 1,500 tonnes of food waste over the past year. Thank you to all our residents who are using the service!

If you are not sure how to use the service, need to check if your property has access to the service, or if you have just moved to Westminster, please visit our webpage for further information, or get in touch with the Recycling Team using the email below.

Why are we doing this?

Wasting less

Food waste generates harmful greenhouse gas emissions. Using this service will help reduce waste and tackle climate change.

Join in this Silver Sunday

Silver Sunday returns on Sunday 1 October with an exciting programme of activities.

There is something for everyone, from Tai Chi to cooking, table tennis to dancing, swimming to painting, and these are just a few of the things going on over the weekend.

Silver Sunday prides itself on bringing communities and people together and celebrating our older residents. It is all about spending time with friends, old and new! Bring a friend along or come on your own to make new friends, experience new things and discover what’s on in our wonderful city.

We like also to give residents in care homes some special attention, and this year is no different. The Lord Mayor of Westminster will be visiting Council care home residents accompanied by dancers from the Chelsea Ballet who will be performing a captivating and artistic dance for the residents.

The following pages give a flavour of what’s on offer this year, but new events are being added all the time, so please do check silversunday.org.uk for the most up to date listings.

In bad weather this event may be cancelled at short notice, so please include your phone number when booking. Also advise if you have any access problems.
