Newcomers & Neighbors West Hartford Newcomers & Neighbors (WHN&N) hosted a magical evening at the Pond House to raise over $6,300 for The Town That Cares (a town charity that runs the food pantry, and many other types of emergency assistance). The evening’s festivities began with a wine tasting by Wine Cellars 4, featuring 33 wines. 10% of wine purchases were donated to the Noah Webster House.

The silent auction featured baskets and goodies. The Playground, on New Park Avenue, West Hartford, had thirty riders participate in the first “Mission in Motion Spin-AThon” to help raise funds for the LIVESTRONG Cancer Survivor Fitness Program and the YMCA's Strong Kids Campaign.

The Hill-Stead Museum

A National Historic Landmark and an Official Project of Save America’s Treasures, Hill-Stead Museum in Farmington is a stop on the Connecticut Art Trail and a member of Connecticut’s Historic Gardens.

The 1901 period rooms, featuring a vast collection of Impressionist masterpieces and original furnishings, are open for tours, year round.

This year marks the 21st year of Hill-Stead Museum’s prestigious ‘Sunken Garden Poetry Festival’, held outdoors in the museum’s historic sunken garden. The festival opens Wednesday, June 12 with Pulitzer Prize-winner, Tracy K. Smith, and continues June 26 with Pulitzer Prize-winner, Philip Schulz. On July 10 the festival welcomes human rights advocate, Carolyn Forche and on July 24 it’s none other than President Obama’s inaugural poet, Richard Blanco as its featured guest. The season wraps up on August 7 with former U.S. Poet Laureate and popular favorite, Billy Collins.

Opening reception will be held on May 30 from 5:30-7:00 PM. The Brilliance of Louis Comfort Tiffany: Painter and Craftsman explores the paintings of Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848– 1933). A highly successful and influential glass, jewelry, and interior designer most closely associated with the Art Nouveau movement, Louis Comfort Tiffany was first and always a painter and was the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, who founded the renowned jewelry and silver firm Tiffany & Company. Louis Comfort Tiffany initially chose not to join the family business and instead pursued his own artistic interests, but eventually brought his artistic talents to the family jewelry business. He drew inspiration from his extensive travels through Europe, North America, and North Africa.

While Tiffany’s paintings are not widely known, they reveal a deep understanding of light and color. Ultimately, these interests developed Tiffany’s refinement of glass, a

medium in which he invested much of his creative energies.

At the core of the exhibition are over 100 highlights from the Nassau County Museum’s collection of Louis Comfort Tiffany paintings, the most comprehensive of its kind. The paintings will be arranged according to four key themes: The Orient, European Scenes, American Landscapes, and Figures & Still-lifes. Each section will be accented with stained glass windows, furniture, lamps, vases and other decorative objects to demonstrate the common link between Tiffany’s painting and design.

These objects come from an extensive collection of the Mark Twain House & Museum, whose interior was designed by Tiffany’s firm, Associated Artists, as well as from private collections. Five magnificent necklaces designed or co-designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany are also on loan from the premier holdings of Tiffany & Co. Archives.

This year’s summer production is under the direction of Playhouse co-founder and artistic director, Sean Harris, with musical direction from Colin Britt, and choreography by fellow co-founder and artistic director, Darlene Zoller. West Hartford Art League Founded in 1934, The West Hartford Art League occupies two historic buildings on Buena Vista Road, as well as the town’s former one-room schoolhouse on Mountain Road, where studio art and pottery classes are now taught. The two galleries on Buena Vista showcase work by local, regional, and nationally known artists on a monthly basis. Admission to the galleries is always free and open to the public. They also offer a full schedule of children’s classes and a summer program every July for kids 5-18.

Prime Time

Gardening Tips and Tricks for planting in Prime Season!

T

his is the time of year that gardeners live for…even those who just purchase a few packs of annuals or a hanging basket or two!

Everywhere you go, the world is a riot of flowers, plants, flowering trees, fruit and berry bushes, herbs, vegetables plants, some with full grown fruit already on them. The bounty is overwhelming!

By making some thoughtful choices now at the garden center, your garden upkeep for the rest of the season can be made much easier.

First, decide on the type of gardening you will be doing. Do you need to replace some plants that have died over the winter? Are you filling some spots with annuals for color? Are you planting edibles (herbs, vegetables or perhaps some berry bushes)?

Are you renovating an existing garden?

Knowing this will help you focus on what you need at the garden center and keep you from getting distracted by all the alluring choices.

Check the sunlight in your garden area.

Due to a rough past winter, many trees have come down in yards and what might have been a shade garden in the past, could now be a full sun garden. Different plants might need to be chosen for that spot, and some of the existing plants may need to be moved.

Plan your bloom time. When thinking about purchasing plants for a new garden, (or any that you might be renovating) make several trips to the garden center at various times of the season. If you purchase all the plants in April or May, you'll have a lovely, spring blooming bed that will be nothing but foliage for the rest of the season. Even if

all of the plants you've chosen do bloom in spring, this type of garden can be lovely for the rest of the season if you choose some plants with ‘colorful’ foliage: variegated leaves, chartreuse leaves, or darker burgundy or purple leaves. Plan accordingly.

When planting, remember to leave proper spacing between the plants to accommodate their mature size. During the first season the garden may look sparse.

Mulching in between the plants will help unify the bed, or planting smaller annuals in-between for a year or two might allow the plants to fill into their mature size without being over-crowded.

Remember a few things about newly purchased plants. Take those size and spacing requirements liberally. Sometimes a plant straight from the garden center will behave differently the first year in the garden than it will in succeeding years. A plant may grow taller, or shorter as in the case of mums and asters, for example, than the tag indicates. With respect to ultimate height, remember how big a 6' shrub can be. Nursery pot size can sometimes be deceiving with shrubs. Those shrubs that look cute and dwarf can still grow large, if that is what the cultivar is designed to do!

Edibles are all the rage now and most are colorful and decorative enough to be incorporated into existing landscape beds or planted into pots. Just be sure that no pesticides are used in these gardens…you don't want to go through all the trouble of growing your own food and then mistakenly spray it with poisonous herbicide!

Herbs grow beautifully in pots and some even prefer to grow this way. Basil, as well as some of the other Mediterranean herbs like thyme and rosemary seem to love con-

tainer culture. Best of all, as long as you have a sunny spot near the kitchen, the herbs are always in reach.

And, as far as decorating with fresh flowers, remember that many perennials have a long bloom time, and of course, annuals bloom through most of or all of the summer. Fresh flowers are an easy summer decoration both indoors and on the patio or porch. If this is something that appeals to you, choose flowers at the garden center accordingly. My home is rarely without cut hydrangeas from my garden, for example.

And while flower arranging isn't my strong suit, they do look lovely with a large cut hosta leaf or two behind them.

Remembering Richard Finally, no article about gardening can conclude without remembering Richard Patrissi. The man known as "the Mayor of Park Road" was also the long-time owner of Patrissi Garden Center. Beginners and seasoned gardeners alike could find treasures there, both in their plants as well as in the family. Richard Patrissi's family recently re-purchased the garden center.

Family owned garden centers are becoming a rare commodity these days. As gardeners, we need to do all that we can to help them thrive.

Hydrate your skin With the intricacy of prints this fashion season, it’s best to keep our complexions a smooth canvas for dramatic, but soft, eyes and lips. Start with clean, fresh, blemish free skin. Be sure to use pure and safe, PH balanced products to cleanse and moisturize.

Read labels and avoid any with mineral oil, animal byproducts, preservatives and chemical fragrance – all of which can cause drying, allergic reactions and inhibit proper skin respiration.

Try a cellular renewal mask with a natural exfoliate, like papaya enzyme to remove dead skin and reveal a new glow. Follow up with a super hydrating mask to further plump up skin to appear more youthful.

PINK Rosé definitely has its place in today’s trendy color wheel of wine!

remember this Twain quote – in center of page –every time I taste wine, especially when I am choosing wine for others to enjoy. The one style of wine that is becoming easier and easier to suggest, but still might get a pause and a raised eyebrow when suggested is…rosé.

No, no, no…not that sweet pink stuff that you have to get when your great aunt comes over for the holidays (and even that is okay, refer to the opening quote!), but that wonderful, dry, refreshing wine, when chilled, is the bridge of enjoyment between white and red. Let’s take a Wine 101 moment to explore the world of rosé in three easy steps.

Pears, Peach, Passion Fruit, Orange Blossoms, Floral, Wild Strawberries… see what I mean? That is just a short list of perfumes that will jump out of the glass. Now, onto step three…

Step 3: Taste

Rosés are a great wine for this time of year when temperatures are rising, and it might feel too hot for a glass of red. The taste of rosé, depending on the grape variety or varieties used, could reflect the similar scents that are on the nose. Besides the reflection of great refreshing fruit flavors delivered to the palate from this dry wine, is the texture or mouth feel. Now when it comes to Art, however, the Louvre in Paris is the largest and most visited museum in the world. The museum opened in 1793 and is housed in the Louvre Palace, a former royal palace. The famous glass pyramid which is in the main courtyard of the Louvre Palace was added in the 1980’s and serves as the main entrance. The museum is most known for being the home of the “Mona Lisa”.

Spring Petite Rack of Veal

16 oz Frenched veal rack 2 c All purpose flour 2 c Italian bread crumbs 2 c Egg wash (egg mixed with a small amount of milk) Cooking oil 1 oz Arugula Fresh Garlic 2 oz Yellow & Red Cherry Tomatoes 1. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees.

2.Cut veal rack in half, 4 bones in each half, then cover with plastic wrap, and pound with meat tenderizer until thin and flat. Dredge pounded veal racks with flour, covering both sides thoroughly. Dip racks into egg wash, coating well. Dredge in bread crumbs, on all sides, until covering well.

3. Add oil to cold, oven-safe sauté pan, and place on medium heat. When the pan is hot, add veal racks, cook 2 minutes on one side, and then turn over and cook 2 additional minutes. Put the pan in the oven to bake for 8 minutes.

When you take it out, let it sit for 5 minutes while you prepare the arugula.

4. Saute arugula and tomatoes in hot oil and fresh, minced garlic, very quickly, until just wilted. Serve veal racks with arugula and mashed potatoes, or rice.

Time for a Financial Facelift?

Planning & examining your finances should be a priority!

ere’s the scenario … you get a card in the mail, one of those little reminders telling you it’s time for your annual financial checkup. Your reaction: I’ll take care of that later. Wrong. Here’s why you should look forward to it.

Why do you need an annual review?

Because things change, and during the course of the last 12 months, you may have … changed jobs, made major purchases, welcomed a new child, retired, bought or sold a residence, decided upon new goals.

These developments can change your financial objectives. Also, it is just sensible to measure your financial progress. If you are not making progress in accumulating assets, or if you are assuming too much risk as a result of your current portfolio or financial decisions, it’s time for change.

The annual review should be a “deep breath” where you can get away from daily distractions and think clearly about financial planning.

Imagine letting your investments go for five or ten years, assuming that they’re doing okay while you wonder what the quarterly statements mean. Imagine being a few years from retirement only to find you have less than a year’s salary in savings. Imagine passing away and leaving unresolved money issues for your loved ones, or subjecting them to a contentious probate process.

This is an ideal time to take a look in the mirror, financially speaking. It’s also a good time to make voluntary IRA contributions, and get college funding and financial aid applications underway.

Lending money to family & friends. You may know someone who has lent a few thousand to a sister or brother, a few hundred to an old buddy, and so on. Generosity is a virtue, but personal loans can easily transform into personal financial losses for the lender. If you must loan money to a friend or family member, mention that you will charge interest and set a repayment plan with deadlines. Better yet, don’t do it at all. If your friends or relatives can’t learn to budget, why should you bail them out?

The problem is far too common: a CreditDonkey.com survey of 1,105 households last fall found that 41% of respondents had less than $500 in savings. In another disturbing detail, 54% of the respondents had no savings strategy.

Living without a budget. You may make enough money that you don’t feel you need to budget. In truth, few of us are really that wealthy. In calculating a budget, you may find opportunities for savings and detect wasteful spending.

Frivolous spending. Advertisers can make us feel as if we have sudden needs; needs we must respond to, needs that can only be met via the purchase of a product. See their ploys for what they are.

4. Something fun we may not know about the store, Kimberly, or her team?

Well, I majored in Biology and was supposed to be off to medical school after graduation. A part-time job at SAKS while studying for exams led to a change of plans.

5. How does Kimberly live a local lifestyle?

I live here in West Hartford, send my kids to school here, vote here, shop, and dine here. I love this town, not just the Center, but the whole town. I feel very lucky to have found it!

The trend for the season is to embrace the hair’s natural texture. Soft waves, loose buns, and braids are very popular and flatter most hair types.

3. When did you open in West Hartford?

The Salon opened 9 years ago, but I have been working in the community for more then 20 years.

4. Something fun we may not know about the yourself, or your team?

I had the opportunity to train with many Master Cutters including Fredric Fekkai, John Sahag, Juan Juan, and Louis Santanelli. By combining their different techniques, I am able to design the perfect cut for my clients; cutting hair both wet and dry.

5. How do you live a local lifestyle?

During down times, we love to shop! West Hartford is like a second family for me and for us in the salon. Often we are like the yellow pages for our clients recommending where to shop, dine, or what to see that's new.

5. How do you live a local lifestyle?

With so many wonderful restaurants, I usually have lunch out. Antonia, at Antonia's Hair Boutique up the street, takes care of my hair; I see Nilce at Nelson Salon, Carl at Central Optica, Bridgewater chocolate for my children; Lauren, at Labrazel, when I'm ready for new towels or sheets; Kelly, at Kelly Burke Interiors, designed our fabulous curtains and desk skirt, and Sugarbelle for cupcakes. Daswani always has the perfect item for my husbnd, and Spruce is there when I want to find a great accent piece for my home. I feel like the luckiest retailer to be next to Pfau's Hardware, Café Sofia (best espresso), Sevan Jewelers, and Toast Wines!

Almost everyone knows that the ‘B’ and the ‘K’ have been best friends for almost 40 years. What people may not know is that Karen wrote a high school paper outlining her dream to open a women’s store with her best friend back in high school. We think the reality of what we offer our customer today is a near perfect replica of the inspiration of that initial teenage dream.

5. How do you both live a local lifestyle?

Living a local lifestyle means investing in our community.

We know our customers and the details of their lives: their children, where they work, what they love to do, what they bought the last time they were in. We have conversations.

We listen. We are a supportive neighbor, citizen, and caring friend. We believe in our business community and commit to shopping, dining and strolling locally with businesses that are like-minded. Shopping small always brings big joy!

SPIN is all about finding the perfect personalized gift, whether that is through adding a monogram to a blanket, engraving to a key chain or that little hostess gift that you just want to grab and go. Not only do we have many unique things, we are able to personalize them very quickly because we do most of it in house. We love working with our customers to help them pick out just the right gift and sometimes something just for themselves!

We have so many new beautiful tote bags for spring and summer and they look great with a monogram!

We opened in Blue Back Square November 2012.

The name of the store is a combination of my two daughters’ first and middle names.

“Raw” diamonds just came in and if you haven't seen them up close you must stop in to check them out. Pearls are back in a big way and just in time for the month of June ... even if you have pearls you don't have anything like these! Of course, silver is always big for Spring and Summer along with our “Arm Candy” – Alex & Ani and Pandora.

3. When did Monarch open in Farmington?

33 years ago in a small boutique and just last year we expanded to 4,000 square feet in the heart of Farmington at the Epicure Plaza.

4. Something fun we may not know about the store, it's owners, or the team?

Just recently it was announced by the Farmington Chamber of Commerce that Monarch Jewelers will be honored in early May as the Small Business Entrepreneur of the Year! We are proud of our familyrun business with Angela and Lee at the helm; our nephew Jesse is the Manager; Angela's sister Debbie is the Office Manager and our niece Gina handles your sales needs.

5. How does the Monarch team live a local lifestyle?

We all live locally and are involved in the community. Angela and Lee live around the corner from the store and are members of the Country Club of Farmington. They are actively involved in the community every day!

What sets Body Talk apart?

Marsha Davidson opened Bodytalk on May 1st 1985.

It began as a store for exercise and dance with leotards and tights - hence forth the name. As the customer dictated, the store evolved to become the contemporary women's clothing store it is today.

In 1992, Marsha’s husband Noel Davidson retired as President of Women's Specialty Retailing which consisted of Casual Corner, Caren Charles, August Max, Petite Sophisticates, and Ups and Downs. He was retired for a short time before suggesting the opening of a second Bodytalk store in 1993 on Main Street, and so Noel joined the business.

In April 2012 Marsha retired as buyer and Anna Mancione stepped easily into her shoes. Anna had been co-manager for 20 years prior. She knows her customer well. The number one rule at Bodytalk is that the customer comes first. We have prided ourselves on this premise for almost 28 years; that means full service.

How do you live a local lifestyle?

As far as staying "local", we (the Davidsons) live our lives on Route 44. Our doctor, dentist, grocery store, exercise facility, hair salon and, of course, work are all in this area. We have lived in Avon almost 30 years! – Marsha and Noel Davidson

President Barack Obama cracked only a few smiles during his emotional speech at the Chase Family Arena at the University of Hartford in April, to push his efforts for new gun control legislation. This was Obama’s second visit to Connecticut since the Newtown shootings, and first visit since Gov. Dannel Malloy and the Connecticut legislature passed strong new gun legislation.
