On behalf of the membership at Stafford Country Club we are excited to welcome both Professionals and amateurs to the 2018 WNY Open. Stafford Country Club has a long tradition of supporting Western New York PGA Section events and we are delighted to host this championship for the second year in a row. We are even more thrilled for the 5-year commitment to this championship after Niagara Falls CC and Glen Oak GC played host for over 16 years. I am fortunate to be entering my 20th Year as the PGA Head Professional at Stafford proudly serving the membership. Our course was designed by Walter J. Travis in 1921. Most of the greens are still Travis’s Original and continue to challenge golfers of all levels. With relatively small greens and tree-lined fairways, it is almost imperative to drive the ball in the fairways!
2017 Championship Recap—WNY OPEN Monday, May 15th , 2017- Stafford CC, Stafford, NY The WNYPGA hosted the first major championship of the 2017 season at Stafford Country Club in Stafford, NY last year. Claiming victory, and his first championship in the WNYPGA Section, was Chris Zumpano who is an Assistant Professional at Oak Hill Country Club. Chris shot a 1-under par 71 and finished tied after 18-holes with Mike Kiel and Rob Krajewski. We headed into extra holes and Chris drove his tee shot on Hole #18, the first playoff hole, over the 280 yard Par 4, chipped within three feet and made the putt for birdie for the win.
Kirk Stauffer, Head Professional at Pine Acres Country Club, tied with Jim Mrva, Head Professional at Monroe Golf Club with two over par 74s. Kirk made a birdie three on hole #18, the first playoff hole, to win the Senior Professional Division.

WALTER J. TRAVIS DESIGN TO BRING A CHALLENGE TO ALL COMPETITORS The centerpiece of Stafford Country Club is the classic 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Walter J. Travis in 1921. It is a course that has won the admiration and respect of countless golfers who have competed in the many prestigious state and regional events hosted by Stafford. Over the years, the course has drawn praises from noted golf professionals such as Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, and Julie Inkster.

SIGNATURE HOLE Hole #11 – Many would describe the 11th hole as Stafford’s signature hole. It is a 420 - yard par 4 with out-of-bounds left and right, and a creek angling across the fairway within 120 yards of the green. The green contours represent Travis at his most creative or, some would insist, diabolical best. A drive in the fairway and careful placement of the approach shot are keys to success on this hole. Many players accept their bogey with a smile and proceed to the next hole.
