Dear Friends & Fellow Parents

As the President of The Arc Westchester Foundation Board of Directors, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all back to A Matter of Taste, our signature fundraising event to support innovative, lifelong services for thousands of individuals and their families impacted by developmental disabilities, including autism.

After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, we are delighted to hold an in-person event where we will present well-deserved recognitions to our honorees: the Masket Family as the recipients of the Family Partner Award, and Zaro’s Family Bakery as the recipient of the Corporate Partner Award.

The mission of The Arc Westchester Foundation is to increase public awareness and raise financial support from the community to help support The Arc Westchester’s comprehensive services: early childhood education, day programs, recreation & respite, transition & employment, residential placements, and guardianship. Since many of these innovative services receive little to no public funding, and government funding is constantly shifting, the Foundation attends to the long-term health of The Arc Westchester.

A Matter of Taste, now in its 17th successful year, has raised over $3 million since its inception.

We are so grateful to our wonderful restaurateurs for their continued generosity, and to all our incredible partners. Thanks to you, we expect a record-breaking event. Enjoy the evening, and know that together, we are changing lives.

Gratefully yours,

2 Arc of Westchester

Greetings

On behalf of The Arc Westchester Foundation and the event committee, welcome to the 17th Annual A Matter of Taste.

I am honored to be the new Chairperson of this important fundraising event and am thrilled that you have chosen to lend The Arc Westchester Foundation your support. We have so much to celebrate, as we return in person this spring for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. The Arc Westchester is a resilient organization, and its generous supporters, like you, have stood by them through these tumultuous and challenging times. I am in awe of you all, including the incredible restaurants and beverage supporters who continue to rally in support of our communities. Enjoy the terrific food, wine, spirits, and lively company. We will do our best to inspire you and hope that you will continue to contribute towards our $400,000 goal by bidding on auction items, buying wine, and most of all, raising your paddle during the Impact Gift Appeal. Everything you do makes an important difference.

Congratulations to the Masket Family, who will be receiving the Family Partner Award, and to Zaro’s Family Bakery, who will receive our Corporate Partner Award.

A special thank you and welcome back to our returning chefs and beverage providers, and a warm welcome to those who are new to the event this year. We are so grateful to them for volunteering their time, providing their food and drinks free of charge, and sharing their love for what they do. You have been in our thoughts throughout the pandemic, and we are thrilled that you are here today, creating a memorable evening for our guests. Please offer your thanks, share your experience on social media, and remember to visit their establishments.

We are also grateful to Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits and Tito’s Handmade Vodka for so generously providing wine and spirits for this evening’s event. Finally, we thank our auction item donors for providing such a wonderful array of tempting items.

Eat, drink and be merry as you continue to help The Arc Westchester lead the way, as it has since 1949.

Thank you and bon appétit!

A Matter of Taste 2023 3

Congratulations

On behalf of my sixteen colleagues on The Arc Westchester Board of Directors, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 17th Annual A Matter of Taste. The board is honored by the friendship you have bestowed upon this event and the wonderful and inclusive community we have the privilege of serving. Our mission is clear: Foster Independence, Ensure Safety, Cultivate Relationships, Promote Happiness, and Support Good Health.

As the largest organization in Westchester County that supports individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities throughout the arc of their lives, we are determined to help the over 2,000 people we support each day to realize these values in their daily lives. We could not achieve these goals without a talented and dedicated workforce and the generous support of our friends, like you.

Tonight, in a room filled with 400 guests, we have the pleasure to pay tribute to two members of The Arc Westchester Family whose selfless commitment to our mission and core values is immeasurable. Zaro’s Family Bakery will receive the Corporate Partner Award and the Masket Family will receive the Family Partner Award. Thank you both for all you have done, and for what we know you will continue to do, to assist people with developmental disabilities in their pursuit of happy, healthy, and meaningful lives.

Finally, I would like to express my deep gratitude and respect for The Arc Westchester Foundation. Their tireless efforts and creativity drive the success of events like A Matter Of Taste. The tremendous success of their fund-raising endeavors makes it possible to better train, support and equip The Arc Westchester personnel who carry out our mission to enhance the lives of our Arc Westchester family members – every day. With admiration and appreciation,

EMCEE Kevin Kilner ACTOR

Kevin Kilner has been on big and small screens and stages for close to 40 years, and he still enjoys a terrifically written role in an important story ... hopefully, with some laughs along the way. On Broadway, he was a part of the 50th Anniversary production of The Glass Menagerie with Julie Harris, Calista Flockhart, and Zeljko Ivanek. Some of his OffBroadway credits include roles in the original cast of Donald Margulies’s Dinner With Friends (2000 Pulitzer Prize) at the Variety Arts Theatre, and Lemon Sky at the Clurman Theatre. His regional credits include Admissions at Studio Theatre, Other Desert Cities at Bucks County Playhouse, Time Stands Still at the Adobe Rose Theatre, and The Christians at D.C.P.A., to name a few. And you may recognize him from his many film roles which include parts in The Unattainable Story, Paranoia, Raising Helen, A Cinderella Story, Home Alone III and, coming in June, No Hard Feelings. You may know some of his television credits as well, as he has appeared in over 140 episodes including roles in Acapulco, Dynasty (CW re-launch), Bonding, The Plot Against America, Bull, NCIS, The Blacklist, The Good Wife, and House of Cards. Kevin is married to actress Jordan BakerKilner who has appeared in over 100 television episodes, many movies, and numerous stage productions across the country.

Zaro’s Family Bakery CORPORATE PARTNER

In 1927, Joseph Zaro, having left his home and family in Eastern Europe, sailed to Ellis Island. He saw an opportunity to start one of the best bakeries in America. And he seized it.

Joseph’s sons, Phil and William, took the helm in the 1950s and diligently expanded the business and its reputation. In 1977, Zaro’s opened the first of its four Grand Central Terminal stores, followed shortly thereafter by stores in Pennsylvania Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

Today, with 12 stores in the most competitive market in the world, Zaro’s is a household name in the New York metropolitan area, known for its unsurpassed quality of baked goods including the iconic black & white cookie, challah bread and rugelach.

The fourth-generation of this family-owned and operated business, Zaro brothers Michael, Brian, and Scott, are also committed to giving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities a chance to be contributing members of the workforce. Their enlightened, inclusionary hiring practices are changing the lives of all their employees, while inspiring other businesses to provide career opportunities for individuals supported by The Arc Westchester. Currently, six such individuals are working at Zaro’s, with plans to increase that number.

Last year, Zaro’s celebrated its 95th anniversary by introducing eight different flavors of the black & white cookie and showcasing them in a holiday kiosk in Bryant Park, NYC. In the traditional Zaro’s Family fashion, 10% of all kiosk proceeds was directed to The Arc Westchester Foundation.

It is with great pleasure and honor that we present this year’s Corporate Partner Award to Zaro’s Family Bakery.

The Masket Family

FAMILY PARTNER AWARD

The Masket Family’s involvement with The Arc Westchester began in 2011, when Alex, who is autistic, moved into a group home. It was a tremendous leap of faith for the family, since Alex is nonverbal and unable to clearly communicate his wants and needs. Once the decision was made, the family went “all in.” Elaine became a volunteer and soon joined the Foundation Board, serving as President for four years. Steve also served on the Foundation Board and is now President-Elect of the Chapter Board. As Elaine says, “We started out apprehensive, but the more we learned, the more we grew to love this place. On all levels, The Arc Westchester walks the walk. The staff’s selfless devotion during the Covid-19 pandemic is something we’ll never forget. Alex is thriving, and our entire family has peace of mind— now, and hopefully for many decades to come.”

Focusing on long-term financial stability for the organization, Steve and Elaine have been exemplary ambassadors, donors, and fundraisers, with Will and Kristin following in their footsteps. The results have been extremely impactful. In 2011, Elaine forged a pivotal and ongoing connection with The Taft Foundation, which has resulted in millions of dollars donated towards cutting-edge programs. Elaine and Steve have also devoted themselves to A Matter of Taste and, with their friends, family, and colleagues, have taken the event to a whole new level.

Alex, now 36, also gives back to the community. His artwork is displayed in The Arc’s facilities, and he volunteers with Meals on Wheels, County Harvest, and Feeding Westchester. During the pandemic, Alex and his housemates made cloth masks and assembled single-use laundry packets for the homeless. As Steve says, “We’re so grateful that within his capacity, Alex is bringing value into this world. The Arc Westchester makes everything possible.”

It is with great honor and pleasure that we present the Masket Family with the 2023 Family Partner Award.

The Arc community has been the recipient of your many talents ...determination, vision and intellect.

Without knowing it, you have created the “Masket Standard” for commitment to the Arc community.

You are an inspiration to the entire community. You have touched so many lives in both big and small ways.

I hope you will look around the room and see the many people who are here tonight to honor you — your many acts of kindness extend well beyond the Arc community. You are loved...

Mazal Tov!

With love and admiration, SARI

The Ann Manzi Center

PHASES II-IV RENOVATION HIGHLIGHTS

The Arc Westchester’s Ann Manzi Center, located on four acres of beautiful green space in the heart of Mount Kisco, is a seniorfriendly, multi-generational day services site, reflective of our values and promise to support people with developmental disabilities throughout their lifetime.

Scheduled to begin this year, Phases II-IV will further enhance the interior space, as well as optimize the use of the outdoor space. Program participants, including those with mobility issues, will enjoy increased and varied outdoor programming including gardening, art, exercise, and exploration of the natural world, helping them to stay fit and healthy. These indoor and outdoor enhancements allow us to support up to 100 individuals per day, doubling the Center’s current capacity.
