On Saturday, April 5th, Miss Richfield performed for a packed house at the beautiful Palace Theater to benefit CNY Pride and Syracuse Cares. Palace Theater owner, Michael Heagerty, was on hand to welcome guests and show his ongoing support for the LGBT community After the show, the hilarious Miss Richfield spent some time mingling with the crowd and visibly enjoying the night. She had a fabulous time before heading off to her next gig in Ithaca! For those of you that missed it, she’ll be performing all summer long in P-town.

Massage is not just a pampering spa treatment; the effects on the human body are endless. Massage relieves muscular restrictions; these effects are achieved by direct pressure on the spasm by manipulating the tissue that sends messages of “length” to the central nervous system. This results in more flexible, supple, and resilient muscle tissues. Massage enhances blood circulation, thus increasing the amount of oxygen and nutrients available to the muscles. Increased oxygen and nutrients reduce muscle fatigue and post exercise soreness. And, due to the increased circulation, massage improves muscular nutrition. Massage also promotes rapid disposal of waste products and replenishment of nutritive materials through increased circulation, further reducing muscle fatigue and soreness. Massage interrupts the pain cycle by relieving muscular spasms, increasing circulation and promoting rapid disposal of waste products. Massage helps to maintain the muscle in the best possible state of nutrition, flexibility and vitality, thus hastening muscle recovery and enabling muscles to function at maximum after recovery. Massage benefits patients of all ages with ailments ranging from cancer, back pain, and post operative pain and complications. myfirstpride by Michael Weinberg Cyberspace has tons of modern-day prognosticators anxious to share their visions, guesses really of what the world might look like at some point in the future. One such Twenty-first Century Nostradamus mused in a recent blog about “25 things that won’t exist by 2020”. One item on his list quickly grabbed my attention: Gay Pride Celebrations.

17 or 70, means growing up with an acute sense of difference. Even if the world were to suddenly become totally accepting of difference, the fact remains that LGBT people are unlike not only most of the world around us, but most of the people in the media, as well. And to me, this is the importance of Pride. Attending Pride is like being dropped into the center of an alternative universe, and it’s a world in which I am no longer in the minority. This definitely isn’t Kansas anymore! No, I don’t believe Pride celebrations will ever become obsolete. Each year the volunteers of CNY Pride spend hundreds of hours and raise thousands of dollars making Pride happen. The evening of Pride, as the sun goes down and nothing is left in Everson Plaza but the tents and the trash left behind by the crowd, I sit feeling satisfied and exhausted. And each year, I ask myself why I do it. The answer is simple: I do it because I know that every year is somebody’s first time at Pride.

“Attending Pride is like being Okay, I’ll readily admit that as LGBT people become increasingly dropped into the center visible, the “us vs. them” mentality is starting to disappear. Being of an alternative universe, gay, like being Black or Jewish or anything, is beginning to become and it’s a world in which more of a non-issue. We’re not there yet by any means, but we certainly I am no longer in the seem to be moving in that direction. Still, I’d really hate to see Pride celebrations minority” disappear, and it’s not just because of my volunteer position as planning coordinator for CNY Pride. If you aren’t convinced of the importance of Pride, just think back to your first Pride event, whether it was last year or several decades ago. Growing up lesbian or gay, and I suspect this is true whether you’re

interview the facts&foesof lounge red Interview by Josh Jones

As many people know, Redlight Lounge 426 N Salina Street in Syracuse NY moved into the gay scene by storm. This has sparked a lot of controversy which as a result fed the rumor mill by the bucket load. In an exclusive interview with Owner Nina, we have uncovered many answers the community has been seeking. Q. Nina, I am sure you are well aware there are a lot of rumors in the community about Redlight Lounge, one of which is the uncertainty of the bar staying in business. Is Redlight Lounge going to close its doors? A. “Yes, Redlight will be closing, when, we are not sure. The landlord will not renew our lease because of all the flack he is getting from the city and Little Italy Association. They don’t want a gay bar in Little Italy, all this is since the murder last February. We will be moving to an undisclosed location”

A. “The community supports us; obviously because they are patrons at our bar. But the other businesses don’t support us at all. We are never invited to be part of any events. Q. One of the brandings redlight lounge has in the gay community is that its patrons are young hot twinks. Do you feel that is a positive aspect or a determent to to your establishment? A. “No, I feel that it is good for the business. I feel Redlight Lounge is the most diverse bar in our community. We welcome everyone no matter what their race, sexuality, or any walk of life. We are open to everyone. I love them all. Sometimes our gay, urban crowd make easy targets for the rumor mill.” Q. A bar/Club is said to have 5-7 great business years. After 5-7 years where do you view Redlight Lounge?

Q. Many people have expressed concern that Redlight has more than its fair share of drugs and other illegal activity. How do you respond to the accusations that Redlight lounge is a haven for drug users and dealers?

A. “Well, obviously Redlight Lounge will cease to exist. But, we will definitely will evolve into something else. In five years from now, I see us being another successful business. We will be supporting and giving to the community. We will have a place for everyone to come and have fun together.”

A. “I can answer that in one word RUMORS. Neither I nor Brian do drugs or promote drugs in our bar. We have adequate security that kick out anyone with drugs. We do not promote or facilitate it at all. There are def no underage drinking or drugs. It’s all rumors. We are the only club that has NYS certified security.”

Q. With the transition of Frita Lay do you feel there has been any animosity with their establishments in the area?

Q. Reading the different posters on your myspace page, it appears that Redlight surpasses other gay businesses in CNY with the number of events it holds. Do you feel Redlight has community support?

10

GTM_revision.indd 10

A. “Most definitely, of course I do! But, I think we offered Frita something she couldn’t have in other places. We offered her the ability to run her show the way she wants and I wouldn’t ever question her about it.” Q.What is you’re most popular night and why? A. “Thursday and Saturday and I honestly don’t know why.” Q. Recently there was a very unfortunate fight outside your bar,

gaytimes magazine 6/1/08 12:36:43 PM

the result was one death and one imprisonment. As you know, some people have pointed the finger at Redlight. Has this affected your business and if those finger pointers were in front of you now, what would you say? A. ”Immediately following the incident, it definitely affected our business. As the weeks went on I think people started to realize it had nothing to do with Redlight Lounge. The fight was actually between two straight people. If the finger pointers were here now I would say one of the accused is currently working at another gay bar. Why would you hold us accountable, yet patronize their facility. The community and I both know the murder at 245 am in February had absolutely nothing to do with Redlight Lounge or its security. We have and always will be a very safe place.” Q. What is the next big event for Redlight Lounge? A. “Gay Pride of course! We have other great events scheduled in the meantime, but I would have to say that gay pride is probably the biggest. If it happens to be our last hurrah then we are going to blow the roof off this place!! Q. At this time is there anything else you would like to stay to GAYTIMES readers? A. Yes, just that Brian and I so very much appreciate the love and support our patrons have given us for the past year and a half; and hopefully they will for the next 20 years So with that said, we would like to wish the best for Nina and Brian. Perhaps if they find a new location they can use the experience from their current business to stride forward and help promote a sense if community for all of us to enjoy.

It’s official, movie start Jodie Foster has

separated from her partner of more than ten years. The star of such movies as “Contact” has reportedly been having an affair with another woman for over one year.

In happier news, the stunning actress Jessica Alba has tied the knot with her super-hot “baby daddy” Cash Warren. Certainly, we wish them many happy years together! Really, we do.

Speaking of politics, it appears that some people are starting to voice their opinions on who might be running for the mayor’s office once Matt Driscoll leaves office. Among the many names being thrown around is Joe Nicoletti. If the rumor is true, let’s hope for Joe’s sake that the “third time’s a charm”.

While we’re on the topic of “splits”

we thought we’d let you know that the London rumor mill is abuzz (yet again) with stories claiming that Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie are about to call it quits. Friends say they are trying to work it out for the sake of the children, but they are never is the same city together long enough to give it a good solid try. Too bad!

On May 18th the longtime senator from Mass was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Senator Kennedy has always fought for the rights of the LGBT community; we send our prayers Uncle Teddy!

Other names being tossed around are Councilor Stephanie Miner and City Auditor Philip LaTessa….and the buzz has just started!

And now for the WTF clip of the month (maybe the year) - some crazy queen in Miami Beach has stooped to entirely new low. A hospital worker named Pedro Gonzales surrendered to Miami police on Wednesday May 21st after (police say) he performed oral sex on a male patient who was just waking up from Anesthesia following surgery. The alleged sexual assault victim was a patient at Miami’s Mount Sinai Hospital. Apparently, after nurses ignored the patient’s complaint, he phoned the police from his hospital bed. The patient later told detectives that even though he was coming off the effects of the anesthesia, he can ID the suspect and was “aware of the act.

Hey, if there is anything you would like to know about movie, cd, etc, just email me here and i would be glad to answer any questions or reviews you might want!!! Til then, love and kisses NIKKI FENMORE

moviereview “FUNNY GAMES” is a twisted and kinda sick movie. It’s based on a european movie with the same name and premise. It stars Naomi Watts and Tim Roth as a coupe who are going to their summer retreat, along with their young son and dog. At their camp they encounter two boys(in their teens or early twenties), who seem nice but thats when the horror begins. I am not quite sure who is more horrified; the audience or the film?? The movie twists and turns, and justs when things take turn for the better they get worse and worse. All hope of rooting for anyone is just exhausting and disturbing. Don’t get me wrong, i mean the acting is great. Naomi Watts is a wonderful actress, but the movie wears you out. You just can’t take anymore. You know, you go to the movies to escape life, dream fantasies, etc etc But this movie is so dark and frustrating that you can never reach any kind of escapism. RATING: 2 STARS

“PROM NIGHT” is a remake of the classic John Carpenter film of the same name. Except that they changed the whole story and the only thing resembling the original is the title. And, that’s a shame. Because Carpenter was an ace when it came to scary movies and this new “PROM NIGHT” doesn’t even come close. Poor poor Brittney Snow, getting sucked into this horrible, non scare farce. I mean she is like an up and coming actress, with movies like “HAIRSPRAY” under her belt. Her agent should have said no no no!!!! Of course this movie takes place at her prom, and one by one her friends get killed. But, this is like a Disney movie. I have seen scarier things in Disney movies. The killings are done so that we don’t see gore or blood. What’s up with that, we want to see blood and guts!!! I almost couldn’t wait til it was over. Seriously, you knew what would happen before you saw it, that’s how lame and readable this movie is!! So, please do not put this at top of your ‘MUST RENT” movie list!!! This is a dud!!!! musicreview ARTIST YOU OUGHT TO KNOW: DUFFY Another import from England, with stylings like Amy Whinehouse. Except that Duffy doesn’t seem strung out!! “Mercy” is Duffy’s 1st single here in the US. It’s already a countdown favorite on VH1 and is steadily rising the charts here. Duffy’s sound is a throwback to the 60’s girl groups and Dusty Springfield. The song is hot, so check out “Mercy” from Duffy; an artist to watch for!!!!

KYLIE MINOGUE “X”

MARIAH CAREY

Well, it has been worth the wait!! The release of “X” is all i expected and more!!!! We all know that Kylie was dealing with breast cancer. She stopped her “SHOWGIRL TOUR” dead in it’s tracks and took time to get the cancer and herself taken care off.

The woman with the voice is back, with her follow up to “THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI”; “E=MC2”!!!! As i do like this cd, i feel as if it’s not as strong as “EMANCIPATION”, but holds it’s own.

And now she is back!!! She is raring to go with guns blazin’!!! The 13 track cd is amazing. It is filled with exciting new songs and sounds from the princess of pop.Starting off the cd is the jazzy sounding “2 Hearts”. Showing a more showgirlie side of Kylie. It’s cute and a rarity from such a pop performer. “Like A Drug” is a pulsating, move your feet, dancefloor demander. It’s sexy, vivacious and pulls you in!! “In My Arms” is reminiscent of Madonna(who is one of Kylie’s influences. “Speakerphone” is a little risque and fun, with lines like”drop your socks and grab your mini boom box.” Dirty, but i love it!! “All I See” is a very modern, up tempo, urban sound for Kylie. Something new for her, but it works. It’s her 1st US single from this cd, so take a listen and request it on your favorite stations!! “Wow” is another catchy pop delight. Exactly what we’d expect from Kylie, pure pop fun!!!

“E=MC2”

Of course the 1st single, “Touch My Body”, already skyrockedted to #1. With her buttery, sexy, breathy vocals it does make you wanna touch her body!! “Migrate” is a great song; featuring T-Pain. This song is a great cd opener, just the right beat to move your feet. “Side Effects”, featuring Young Jeezy, is probably the most personal song on this cd. It reveals a side of Mariah and what she had been going through during her marriage to Tommy Mottola. It’s got a great beat, even though it’s so personal. “I’m That Chick” should be her song of the summer of 2008. It is great! Catchy lyrics. pulsating beats, makes you wanna dance. This song makes you want more!!! “Bye Bye” is a wonderfully emotional ballad, the type of course we are use to Mariah singing. It’s deep and very meaningful, about lost loved ones. Catch the video, it shows Mariah with stars that have passed, very moving!!!

MADONNA

“HARD CANDY”

The Queen of pop is back at is again, stronger than ever with her release of “HARD CANDY”. And it is packed with plenty of sweet treats! The 1st single, “4 Minutes”, is a wonderful anthem for the world. With Timbaland and J T behind her it definately delivers!! It pulsates, thumps, makes you wanna dance!! Though J T tries to overpower her a little, she holds her own. “Give It To Me” is OMG!!! Madonna at her popsensational best! It’s very reminiscent of old-skool Madonna. It’s pure pop perfection. “She’s Not Me”, features Pharrell and Wendy Melvoin(formerly of Prince and the Revolution), is a lil’ repeatative in it’s lyrics, but is good overall!! “Beat Goes On” was released early and believe me that version was not good, but after a lot of tweaking and the addition of Kanye West; we have ourselves a winner. This song rocks!!! The sound, the lyrics, and beats are great. “Voices” seems like a very personal song, but Madonna is good at writing personal. It’s a very deep and meaningful song. It draws you in, captivates you in a sence.

Those few tracks are my main favorites from “X”, but of course i love everything Kylie, so i love the cd!!! So, take a chance on “X”, you will not be disapointed!!!

And have i mentioned how amazing Mariah looks?? Well, hot damn, she is smoking hot as of late. But, anyhoo, this cd “E=MC2” is amazing as well. I suggest that you go and purchase this, you love every song on the cd!!!

Madonna is again on top of her game. Always marketing herself just right, putting herself out there. But, if she didn’t do so there would be no Madonna. She looks amazing, sounds great, etc etc. So, go out and ourchase “HARD CANDY”, you will delightfully pleased!!

Southwick Beach State Park is spacious and popular, known for outstanding swimming and sunning on its long sandy beach. In more recent times it has evolved as a very popular place for gay and lesbian people to congregate. Campers and day-users enjoy picnicking, hiking and games on the playing fields. The park is adjacent to the Lakeview Wildlife Management Area, home to the environmentally-sensitive coastal

q&a Twenty years ago, Shawn Clarke left Syracuse for New York City to pursue a career as a fashion designer. While

in school at the Fashion Institute of Technology, he was signed by one of New York’s top model agencies and jetted off to Japan for a year. When he returned to Manhattan he signed on as designer for the Joan Vass USA collection where he would spend ten years and make his name on Seventh Avenue. After many collaborations in the interior design world, Clarke turned his eye towards residential design. Last summer, Clarke (along with his partner (real estate developer Zachary Belil) returned to Syracuse and established their residential design and development company Shawn Zachary Design. We caught up with Clarke recently for a chat about his projects, his dog and Syracuse. Q. What is your idea of perfect happiness? A. Breakfast in bed with the Sunday Times Style Section, my partner, and my dog “Jack”. Q. What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? A. That would have to be my impatience, which can cause me to be really caustic and rude. Q. What is the trait you most deplore in others? A. The same; I believe that we usually detest in others what we detest in ourselves. Q. What is your current state of mind? A. I’m happy and I’m excited about the upcoming presidential election. Q. What do you consider your greatest achievement? A. My relationship; we’ve been together for fifteen years and we still make each other laugh. Q. We understand that your next project is in downtown Syracuse; can you tell us about it. A. Actually, I can’t. All I can say is that it will be very modern, minimalist, and chic. Q. What would you say is your motto? A. “Why can’t we all just love one another?”

2 Excessively clean places may be a warning that they are neurotic and you should run!

7 Always look in the refrigerator to see if there are any home cooked meals. If it is filled with take out containers then you know what your job is going to be.

3 Tissue paper and lubricant by the night stand could be an indication that they have been practicing for good time. 4 If you notice a complete collection of Golden Girls, family photos, and Afghans two words describe it MAMA BOY! 5 If the place is painted with loud colors he/she may be needy for attention.

8 If the place looks like a pottery barn store ask for a credit report. 9 When things start steaming up and the drapes stay open, it is safe to assume you have an exhibitionist in your hands. 10 If the medicine cabinet has an excessive amount of diuretics then you have yourself a mess!

What They Do

- the most common trick is when they use old pictures to look younger than they really are. - they exaggerate their sophistication and intelligence by listing interests they’re clueless about. - they embellish what they do for a living.

How to See Through It

- check to see that his clothing and haircut in the picture don’t look dated.. - engage him in e-mail dialogue about a particular subject in his profile. - beware of vague references that overly inflate

GTM_revision.indd 24

the importance of his job and career.

What to Avoid Completely

- guys that are over 30 and use any term with the word “boy” in it to describe themselves. - anyone that starts a conversation with the words “wassup”, “what-up”, “yo”, or “hey stud”. - the guys that appear to be intoxicated or stoned; they probably are.

When You Are Online Chatting

- act like an adult; be courteous, be polite, and expect the same in return.
