What Lies Behind the Rain For Piano and Live Electronics

Duration: 8 minutes Piano Live Electronics Minimum Technical Requirements: Laptop running Max/MSP Runtime software positioned within view of the pianist Audio output to stereo loudspeakers (via audio interface) Max/MSP patch provided by the composer MIDI foot pedal connected to laptop (via MIDI interface) Microphone (condenser or dynamic) closely positioned to the strings of the piano and connected to the laptop (via audio interface)

Performance Instructions: The release pedal symbol indicates approximately when the performer should press and release the MIDI pedal (two motions). This alternately opens and closes the microphone channel and allows the Max/MSP patch to â&#x20AC;&#x153;listenâ&#x20AC;? for an amplitude level that will trigger the sound file playback. <Tab> indicates the performer or audio technician to press the tab key on the laptop computer to trigger a low-frequency pitch. <Q> indicates the performer or audio technician to press the Q key on the laptop computer to terminate the low-frequency pitch.

A note about balance: It is the intension of the composer that the piano and the audio output of the electronics are equally balanced throughout to create a unified sound.
