Wendover Woodhenge
As of Spring 2020, Wendover is definitely on the map of Historic England since the HS2 Ltd led excavations have revealed a large circular monument of wooden posts 65 meters in diameter with features aligned with the winter solstice, similar to Stonehenge in Wiltshire amongst other finds (see page 14). Walkers noticed that footpaths in fields either side of Ellesborough Road had been fenced off at the start of lockdown. One footpath was diverted, much to the annoyance of some who damaged a fence to regain access. Archaeological excavations began even though we had not been given official notification of the start of some of them. On Saturday 11 July, the news broke of many astounding finds in these fields just where the HS2 cut and cover tunnel is to plough through our countryside. Since then, the question on the street is - will these finds be destroyed? They have already been recovered but this is normal practice after a first dig. Such activity is always carried out in full co-operation with Historic England but there
is no indication yet of plans to preserve the henge. Countryways Countrymen Outreach Countryways Countrymen Outreach for those feeling isolated Countryways CIC has launched an Outreach Programme from Road Farm in Great Missenden to support Countrymen during the current COVID-19 outbreak, helping keep people connected to the countryside and farm-life during lockdown. Countryways is opening up this Outreach to more retired men in the community who have an affinity with outdoor environments or have long-term health or mobility issues. The Outreach Programme aims to keep people up-to-date with countryside news, as well as keeping them motivated and stimulated. This could be a regular telephone call, farm-related activities to complete at home, a monthly newsletter, regular updates on social media or links to videos and photographs about what is going on at the farm. Climate Action Wendover With 40% of the country’s emissions coming from households, Climate Action Wendover welcomed the chancellor’s announcement on 8 July introducing a £2bn ‘Green Homes Grant’ to help homeowners increase the energy efficiency of their property.
Homeowners will be able to use the vouchers on insulation, double glazing, solar panels and heat pumps. For example, to fit insulation worth £2,000 in your home, you would pay £660 and the government would give you a voucher for the remaining £1,320.
To achieve a good level of energy efficiency, approximately 68% of the UK’s 28 million homes need to be upgraded which would equate to approximately 2,112 properties across the Wendover parish. Paul Moring, chair of Climate Action Wendover said: “Reducing emissions from homes is one of the many ways that will enable Wendover reach the UK’s target to become a net zero emitter by 2050.”
How does the scheme work? We don’t know all of the details yet but to learn more about the scheme, visit the government website www.gov.uk/greendeal-energy-saving-measures. From this website, a good starting point is to enter your postcode to find the current energy performance certificate for your home and learn how to make it more energy efficient.
What is the Green Homes Grant? Under this scheme, the government will pay for at least two thirds of energy savings improvements to your home up to the value of £ 5,000 and for those on the lowest incomes, the scheme will fully fund energy efficiency measures of up to £10,000 per household.
When the scheme opens in September, homeowners can apply online for the vouchers and Paul Moring said: “If you are planning energy savings improvements to your home this is a fantastic opportunity to save money on the work, reduce your future energy bills and help cut emissions.”

In the absence of support from the Department for Transport for our preferred solution – the Mined Tunnel - we continue to push HS2 Ltd, the DfT and the nominated contractor, EKFB (Eiffage Kier Ferrovial BAM JV), for enforceable assurances regarding three urgent issues: noise, the impact of the green tunnel on the aquifer and potential traffic congestion in future years on the A413. Because the final design of the line around Wendover has NOT been agreed – yet preparatory work has already begun – we maintain that potential mitigation measures need to be designed in now in anticipation of their future utilisation. It will be too late to make those changes after the line has been built. As separately reported on the front page and page 14, fusion-jv have discovered an ancient wooden "henge" near the proposed HS2 line at Wellwick Farm which is of considerable interest to Heritage England. With the recent halt to discussions about improving the A303 near Stonehenge, is there any hope that Heritage England could change HS2's plans and protect our henge by mining a tunnel underneath it?? Questions are also being asked by Wendover residents about the future wherabouts of all the archaeological finds. Wendover HS2

Local News Jan French
Jan passed away peacefully on 16 June 2020. She was the loving mother of Merrenna, Merrick and Michelle and grandmother to Asher, Aaron and Nina. A Private Funeral Service was held on 8 July. The letter was a real boost to the staff who have worked through the crisis and kept the school open for our students. In the last week of term we had all 40 frontline staff back in school and the majority of the students have attended at least part of the week. The school will be open for some students over the summer holidays so that we can continue look after the children of key workers and our most vulnerable students. The section of the HS2 route is being prepared to build the Wendover Green Tunnel and the Wendover North Cutting. The archaeology programme is a central part of HS2’s ground preparation works for Phase One of the project - London to Birmingham. Good Neighbour Scheme COVID-19: Reflecting on the Way Forward
The government is keen to get the economy moving again and we are all working to develop ways of living and working that make us feel safe. As government advice, particularly once it has been fired through the prism of the media, seems to be a bit fluid, my advice is “back to basics”. Keep the social distance, wash hands, use masks and gloves when necessary. “If in doubt, keep out” seems to be a reasonable position. Using our own judgement, we can all gain a bit of normality, work, or shop, keep safe and get the country moving. Wendover has weathered this COVID-19 storm well. Now we need to make sure that no one gets left behind during the next phase. Tom Walsh Chairman Wendover Parish Council
1 August and the Wendover Good Neighbour Scheme
1 August is a significant date for those residents who are shielding. It is the date the Government have decided they can venture out and return to some form of normality. Whilst many will welcome the opportunity, others will not be so confident having been confined to their homes for such a long time. The change will also impact on the Wendover Good Neighbour Scheme, with many of the residents previously relying on the support of the Wardens now able to complete their own errands. Recognising the significance of this change, the Good Neighbour Scheme will make a phased www.wendovernews.co.uk
withdrawal during the period 1 August to 15 August. This will enable the Wardens to liaise with any residents having concerns and offer assurances to help build their confidence before venturing out. The Parish Clerk will engage with the authorities to ensure they are aware of the transition, so their support services are maintained. A letter was sent to all the Wardens explaining the adjustment and a copy is included below for wider community appreciation: ‘Good Neighbour Scheme – Transition of duties/responsibilities from 1 August (post shielding watershed) I last wrote to you on 23 June confirming the Council’s intentions to maintain the WGNS beyond this crisis and I look forward to your further inputs once we commence our “lessons learned” review of Wendover’s COVID-19 experience to date. Meanwhile, we must consider the here and now and our approach on easing the incredible support provided by the Wardens. 1 August is a watershed for the formally shielded. For many it will provide a gratefully received opportunity to return to some form of normality, for others the new normal will be extremely daunting but they will cope, and there is another group of individuals who will have a continuing need for support from the statutory authorities who are responsible for social care. It is important that if we think that anyone we know is being left behind in this process that we highlight that fact.

Whilst the relaxation in restrictions creates a feeling of normality and a lifeline for local businesses, please ensure you adhere to the essential defences by wearing a mask, washing your hands and complying with the social distancing rules whilst enjoying the Wendover facilities. #CarryUs Local Designer Ben Glazier was asked to produce a set of stamps for the Isle of Man during lockdown. To honour local people who made it their responsibility to #CarryUsThrough the crisis, Wendover News Care: Street Wardens organised the Community: Sarah Greer Photography collection of essentials including food and medicines for our vulnerable neighbours. These are some of the many Street Wardens who volunteered to help their neighbours. They are photographed here in front of Budgens and online individually in front of Lloyds Pharmacy as these were the places they visited most frequently on behalf of the shielded or people who needed help for whatever reason. Some requests were more unusual, eg a litter tray for a cat, but everyone coped and more importantly, all the neighbours got to know one another much better. See also page 17.

Wendover Dementia Support moved into the home. Oskar raised money for the NHS. 10 year old Oskar Bevan started baking brownies and he sent £60 to our local NHS Trust. Lockdown forced the much loved Monday Club Café, led by Dr Moreton, to close down temporarily but the volunteers were determined to continue supporting the 20 visitors and their families through fortnightly newsletters, weekly telephone support, a family support WhatsApp group and a specialist advisory service. Words: Wendover Youth Centre organised Work: Local businesses Thumbsie and a pen-pal system to keep self-isolating people in touch. During lockdown, young people from Wendover Youth Centre joined forces with St Mary’s Church as pen-pals for the selfisolating and notified vulnerable. Both young and old found these correspondences a really fulfilling experience and are looking forward to the day when they are able to meet in a gathering without fear of spreading the virus. The self-isolating found that they were remembered and the young discovered and relished a traditional practice that had been unfamiliar to them.

There has been much talk of the groups which have been adversely affected by lockdown and people living with dementia definitely fall into that category. The Rotary of Wendover and District (RoW&D), https://www.facebook.com/ RotaryinWendoverandDistrict/, was aware that grants specifically for people affected directly or indirectly by Coronavirus were available from Rotary District 1260. These grants effectively double the donation from an individual Rotary Club. RoW&D heard that Wendover Dementia Support (WDS) https://www. wendoverds.org.uk/ were keen to keep in touch with all the people who usually attended the Monday Club Café (see also page 18) and others approached in different ways. The Playlist for Life project is part of a National Dementia Initiative set up by Sally
Magnusson after witnessing the effect of music on her late mother’s dementia. Playlist for Life, can help transform the lives of people living with dementia by evoking memories, prompting conversation and strengthening relationships. To be as effective as possible a playlist for life needs to contain music that is personal and full of meaning, stimulating fond memories and emotions. The grant will enable the WDS to provide 10 sets of equipment which will come preloaded with favourite Café music tracks. Help will be given to augment these with personal choices. The Alzheimer’s Society retails a music player with simple controls specifically for those with dementia. The players are manufactured in Wales by a UK company. WDS is currently supporting 34 families and have 19 volunteers helping to deliver the services.

Happy 100th Birthday, Ena! Grace Blackman: “Diaphanous Daze” Editor’s note: In 2018, Grace Blackman was awarded a grant by the Lionel Abel-Smith Trust. Grace contacted the Trust by email earlier this summer to catch them up on her progress. I wanted to write an email expressing my gratitude once again for the donation you made back in 2018 to help fund my final year collection, which I have recently completed. I wanted to send some photos of what I have been up to and to show you the garments that you helped fund. I also was successful with winning a competition to be in the Guardian in June, as one of the 5 chosen 2020 graduates across the UK! This was a huge achievement and will definitely help me get my name out there for future job prospects. On Sunday afternoon 28 June with the sun shining we decided to take our exercise in the fresh air on our mobility scooters. However on our return at the junction of Aylesbury Rd & Halton Lane, my husband’s scooter froze and refused to budge, the alarm sounding very loudly. I had already crossed the junction and worried, seeing his distress in my mirror. Many people passed by, some asking, “Is everything alright?” then passing on. Eventually a young woman walking her dog stopped and offered assistance, ringing recovery & insurance offices. As it was clear they could not help for some time and not wishing to abandon the scooter, she then rang her partner who appeared almost by magic. He pushed my husband seated on his scooter all the way home! - a mammoth task as scooter + rider are heavy. His partner + children + dog escorted us as I led the way home. Lowland woodlands are important to the public, not only for their recreation but for the environment and biodiversity, so particularly now as there is a forestry consultation that closes on 17 September, I think the public would welcome the Wildlife Trust’s input in highlighting the issues. www.wendovernews.co.uk
Everyone cares about the planet and many, inspired by David Attenborough - like the Chancellor Rishi Sunak who said in his very first Budget he wanted to see 30,000 hectares of trees planted to capture climate heating carbon and boost wildlife. However, in global terms, this is only a well meaning but misplaced gesture because it is the loss of tropical forests, those of the great taiga near the top of the Northern hemisphere and the illegal logging in parts of Europe like Romania, where 2 hectares of forest is disappearing every hour, that is a major cause of climate change.
The control of deer and squirrel is vital for success in any forestry enterprise hence the system of financial support needs thorough re-examination to get the best outcome. At present, a lot of up-front cost is met by grants, yet often, as trees are a long term undertaking beyond one owner’s lifetime, the management falters so any expected quality timber is not produced. This wastes precious public money whilst providing inheritance tax avoidance assistance for a succession of owners. One of the highlights of Spring is the Wendover Art Club Exhibition which takes place in May in Wendover Library Room. This year, the Exhibition was virtual, visible at www.wendoverartclub. co.uk/news. Visitors to the physical Exhibition are usually asked to vote for their favourite exhibit to increase interest and trepidation for the artists. Wendover News was asked to judge and can reveal that this year’s prize painting is ‘Bumble Bee’ by Richard Freeman in the Birds and Animal category. The execution of this work required extraordinary delicacy and detail, as well as being a reminder to us all that bees are under threat even though they are essential pollinators.

Tribute: Mike Spain The portrait above was lovingly painted by well known local artist and stalwart of Wendover Art Club, Graham Jefford, who kindly allowed its reproduction. The original painting belongs to Mike’s family. Mike was a Man of Kent (as distinct from a Kentish man, as he would point out – look it up!) and as a child watched cricket at the St Lawrence ground in Canterbury. For whatever reason, his father and grandfather sat at opposite ends of the ground so he would spend the matches shuttling between the two of them, cadging pennies for sweets. Although he was raised an Anglican and attended a Methodist school, apparently he felt an affinity with Catholics; the reason being he was perennially late for school and so on arrival was sent to wait with the Catholic boys who didn’t attend morning assembly. He grew up in a time before central heating, which seems to have accounted for his seeming imperviousness to cold; his children remember him outside the back door on a Monday morning in sub-zero temperatures in his vest, polishing shoes for the week ahead. As a young man, he was a skilled hockey player and once, in a match against Leeds University in which – in his words – he made an England winger look silly, he was approached by the Yorkshire selectors whose interest was predictably short-lived when he identified himself as a southerner. Mike was a worker – possibly a workaholic, though he didn’t have a formal diagnosis – and held down a great variety of jobs in his time. These included, picking hops with his mum, laying paving slabs in Canterbury

– his initials may still lurk beneath the feet of shoppers – sorting mailbags – Herne Bay . . . hooray! – canning peas, completing his national service – supposedly he was treated for malnutrition, having lived on chip butties for some time as the army food was practically inedible – loading Wall’s ice-cream onto lorries, guarding premises on the moors above Manchester as a night watchman, selling adding machines in Liverpool – he once had to buy a hat when these had long gone out of fashion (a trilby?) much to his wife’s amusement in a bid to try and seal a deal with a client – general manager of a textiles factory in Limerick, financial controller with different manufacturers. He was distinctly underwhelmed at the unveiling of the car which was billed as the saviour of British Leyland, the Morris Marina or possibly the Austin Allegro (no comment) and, latterly, deputy under treasurer of the Middle Temple in London. Mike was very proud to have been married to an Irishwoman, Collette, and the Glens of Antrim and its people remained close to his heart. A few years after he was widowed, he was encouraged to attend an SVP (Society of St Vincent de Paul) talk about bereavement by a lady who had also been widowed, in the same year, it turned out. Hence he met Marguerite and they were happily married for 20 good years. They continued to work for SVP and at one time were the mainstay of Bega kwa Bega, Ugandan Orphans, a charity with which Marguerite was already very involved. Mike’s great prowess in the kitchen was a great asset as he organised a supper every year which raised money towards various projects including schools, a model farm, water and sanitation. A

Another great institution which Mike threw himself into was Wendover Twinning Association, participating with enthusiasm in all their events and exchanges right up until 2015, after which date his health sadly stopped him from travelling abroad. His contribution to the Association over the years was invaluable. He joined the committee, first as an ‘ordinary’ member and later as Treasurer and then Chairman and he will be greatly missed by both English and French members. Mike’s final heroic achievement was to enable St Anne’s Hall to flourish again despite there being no funds from within the Diocese available at the time. He partnered up with Tony Mogford, Dr Colin Riley and others to ensure that Wendover could continue to benefit from a well appointed and well run Hall at affordable rates so that people could meet for regular and occasional activities in pleasant surroundings. People of all ages, from tiny to very senior, have celebrated birthdays and other joyous anniversaries there. Theatre in the Villages used it as a location. Many classes rely on it, especially as the natural light is excellent as well as the internal lighting. Mike is survived by his wife Marguerite, and his sons Patrick, Michael and David.

Warrant Officer Ian Giles finished his tenure as Station Warrant Officer at RAF Halton in July. He handed over to Warrant Officer Andrea Culley who comes to RAF Halton from The Defence Fire Training College at RAF Manston. Warrant Officer Giles is a retired Passing the SWO baton cricketer and played for both the Royal Air Force and The Combined Services teams. He will be leaving RAF Halton to go to RAF High Wycombe as WO Regiment Training.

The School Garden Project, the vision of Head Girl 2018-2019, was successfully finished during this academic year. Its use will be further developed by the new Head Boy, Sam, who also wants to introduce a Sustainability Team within the sixth form, picking up on a recycling project started last year. Elliot is keen to work on behalf of the whole sixth form, both the common room environment and its independence within the school, a special feature not replicated elsewhere. They recognise that they are pathfinders in the new peri-Covid world but they are determined to use their skills to help others to find their way through, too.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

During these unprecedented times, Wendover Parish Council business is carrying on, albeit in a different manner. The financial side of the Council has continued over the internet with virtual meetings including the recent internal audit. The audit was very successfully completed on 22 June with just two minor recommendations for the coming year, thanks to the excellent work by the Deputy Clerk whose diligence and commitment is greatly appreciated. As a result the Parish Council is in a strong financial position despite the extra costs incurred during the Covid-19 outbreak. With the delay to the Parish Council elections until 2021 and after the resignation of Cllr Campbell, there were four empty seats on the Council in June. Following an extraordinary council meeting on 23 June four candidates for co-option were successfully elected to the council making our full complement of 13. We are delighted to welcome Pam Chambers, Kieren Jarratt, Jo Moore and Diane Washington to join us and look forward to working with them. As restrictions to activities are relaxed it has been great to see the Thursday market back on the Manor Waste. It is gradually coming back to full strength and the one way system with hand sanitising is working well. By the time this is distributed, the playgrounds should be open and I know that my grandchildren will be delighted to use the equipment again; it’s been hard to walk past it and not be able to have a go on it! One last plea is that those who use our wonderful outside spaces please take any rubbish away with you and keep Wendover looking lovely, otherwise the grounds team have extra work to do and the health hazards are likely to affect us all. To that end Wendover Parish Council is producing a Time Capsule to be interred next Spring and lifted in 100 years. We want it to tell the future how innovative we were and how helpful and understanding people were to each other. We are appealing to businesses, organisations, and the people of Wendover for suggestions and artifacts to be included in the Capsule. The Time Capsule Working Group will next meet towards the end of August and present its ideas to the full Parish Council at the September meeting. avoid danger or obstruction of the passage of vehicles, pedestrians including those with pushchairs or wheelchairs, cyclists, or horse riders and any streetlights. Wendover Parish Council’s role under devolved services by Buckinghamshire Council is to ensure that home and business owners maintain hedges to avoid danger or obstruction to users of the highways. Any obstructing trees or hedges need to be trimmed back by the landowner, please check the boundary of your property regularly to ensure you are not encroaching onto the public highway. Wendover Playparks Reopened
On Saturday 11 July, Wendover Parish Council reopened their Hampden Meadow and Ashbrook (Castle Park) playparks. Thorough inspections have been completed incorporating Risk Assessments resulting in guidelines which must be adhered to. Please read the signage before using the equipment. The playparks will be monitored to ensure compliance with the guidelines.
