FERGUS LIONS CLUB - PATRICK ANDERSON Welcome to the 40th Fergus Lions Home and Leisure Show and thank you for your attendance and supporting our club programs and members since 1977. What inspired those like Bruce Parker (President of Fergus Lions in 1977) and Larry Wainwright and 25 others to come together and fundraise for a new Community Sportsplex that we enjoy today? It was Lionism and the dedication to live up to our motto “We Serve”. Where there is a need there is a Lion; and we have never faltered. This Home and Leisure Show is a major part of our fundraising and the sale of booths to exhibitors enables us to support programs within the community as well as nationally and internationally. So enjoy the show, support the exhibitors and go to our website www.ferguslionsclub.org to get connected to us and some of our supporters. Stop by the Lions booths of Fergus and Marsville and pick up a bag a popcorn for a donation or donate spare change to Lions Walk for Dog Guides. Pet the foster dog puppies being lovingly raised by local families to become dog guides. Don’t forget to buy your Fish Fry dinner tickets for Friday night, available at the Show or call Lynda Waterhouse at 519-846-2717. This is a quality, full meal, prepared and served by the Fergus Curling Club this year; and an annual event enjoyed by all. The Fergus Lions Club and eight other local Lions Clubs have joined together under the banner “Lions for Groves” to raise $200,000 in support of the Diabetes & Patient program at Groves Memorial Community Hospital. Last October
we were lucky enough to team up with Ryan Joyce, a local boy known to many, and present the Ryan Joyce Show - ILLUSIONS Delusions & other Deceptions. We raised over $12,000 with all proceeds going towards our pledge of $35,000 in support of the fundraising campaign for Groves hospital. Not only did Ryan donate his time for free, he continues to be an active member of our great community. He just finished two sold out shows with world class magicians/ comedians. The cost? Nothing but to support our local restaurants (your receipt was your ticket) or to make
financial donation from our club. Members of the club collect eye glasses from local optometrists and others and sort and pack them for re-service and distribution to those in impoverished countries. We hold an annual fundraiser named Walk for Dog Guides. This marvelous dog program has grown over the years and dogs are given, free of charge, to Canadians with physical disabilities and disabilities associated with hearing, autism, hypoglycemic diabetes unawareness, seizures as well as sight. Diabetes is sometimes the cause of blindness and we are also supporters of the Canadian
This Home and Leisure Show is a major part of our fundraising, and the sale of booths to exhibitors enables us to support programs within the community ... a donation to the Fergus Lions Club. There are so many needs within any community. It’s not always about money but time. We are always looking for help. Maybe it’s only once a year, maybe more. It doesn’t matter. So be an active member of our community. Be a leader in our community. Be like Ryan. Here are some of the services that the Fergus Lions help with: Along with the Fergus Optimist and Kinsmen clubs, we take a lead role in organizing the annual Santa Parade. In partnership with Reliable Motors we organize a toy drive in support of the Food Bank’s Christmas Hamper program and help collect food at local grocery stores several times throughout the year. Our proceeds from Photos with Santa in early December at the sportsplex are also donated to the Food Bank, along with a
Diabetes Association (now called Diabetes Canada). Food and good diet is important to health and our club supports the Children’s Foundation - Student Nutrition Program of Centre and North Wellington. We also provide a lead role in conducting eye screening programs in the elementary schools in Fergus-Elora as well as Rockwood and surrounding areas. Education and sports is important to develop our youth and we Lions support the Wellington County Learning Centre and various youth sports activities in the area. The environment is important to our Lions and we run two “Adopt a Highway” road side clean-up days in conjunction with local elementary schools and support and maintain two park areas. The Wilkie Park in Fergus has new equipment and
bench supplied partially by Fergus Lions and assisted by the Centre Wellington Parks and Recreation Department. On the Grand River south of Colquhoun St. we maintain the memorial trees in this Arboretum. On the Elora Cataract Trailway we assist to provide donated benches. I love living in our thriving and caring community. The Lions Home and Leisure Show is one way for our “town” to come together and make

VISION SCREENING Vision Screening of kindergarten school children was commenced by the Fergus Lions Club in schools in the Fergus area in mid2002 after two years of investigation by the Club into such a need and the legal situation for such work by lay people. The local school boards (Upper Grand, Wellington Catholic and Waterloo Region) all supported the program, and by 2004 many other Lions Clubs were also involved. In our area we cover 17 schools from Rockwood to Drayton, screening an average of 750-800 students every year. Of these students, about 25% each year are referred to optometrists for more in-depth examination. Three basic tests are used to obtain preliminary data as to individual eye strength, eye cooperation and refractive capability. This information is then reviewed against
data provided by optometric organizations. Any child, for whom the data falls outside these parameters is referred to an optometrist for more detailed examination. Lions from four other Clubs assist the Fergus Lions in the screenings at the 17 schools, and Lions from other areas provide screenings for many other schools, such that to date we believe together we have screened close to 100,000 students since the program’s inception. Parents should realize, however, that a screening is far from being an eye examination, and children should be examined by an optometrist at an early age, no later than their kindergarten years.

FERGUS & MARSVILLE LIONS CLUB WALK FOR DOG GUIDES 2018 WALK – “A NEW LEASH ON LIFE” Less stress, less sleepless nights and less worries during the day! Sounds like a miracle cure we all need, at times. Will and Michelle of Guelph now have all three thanks to their son Liam receiving an Autism Assistance Dog on Sept. 19th, 2017 from Lions Foundation of Canada. The miracle cure, Vico, a golden Labrador was given free to Liam thanks to the generous contributions of the citizens of Centre Wellington, Marsville and vendors and supporters of this Lions Home and Leisure Show. Imagine the daily worry of a parent of an autistic child not knowing if they may dart out in traffic or other danger. Lions Clubs of Canada are providing help by supplying trained assistance dogs, free of charge, to Canadians with these and other disabilities. The program has been active in Canada since 1983 and the training centre in Oakville now raises over 230 dogs per year, including: Canine Vision Dog Guides for the blind or visually impaired. Hearing Ear Dog Guides to alert the deaf to alarms and door bells. Service Dogs for those with physical or medical disabilities. Seizure Response Dogs for those with epilepsy. Autism Assistance Dogs for a child age 3-12 on the autism spectrum. Diabetic Alert Dog Guides for people who have type 1 diabetes with hypoglycemic unawareness. What a great program! Giving Canadians a “new leash on life”
by supplying them with specially trained dogs to help them get through their day. And we could not do it without the generosity of people like the ones in Centre Wellington and Marsville who gave over $18,000 last year; plus another $6,000 from Lions fundraising such as this Home Show, for a total of over $24,000, enough to raise a puppy to

SHARING TIME AS A LION When I was first asked if I wanted to be a member of the Lions Club, my first thought was, “why?” I have now been a member for over 35 years, and that “why” question is answered every time I get involved with a Lions project. I am fortunate. As I age, I have time to share with those less fortunate, my health is reasonable, and volunteering is enjoyable, it is not work. The reward for a volunteer is the emotional involvement we get from helping others. Like the kindergarten children we find with our Eye Screening program, who have very deficient eyesight. Parents and teachers were not aware of the problem, but Lions found it. Imagine the
difference that will make to a child, who, with glasses, can now see properly. The person who requires dialysis several times per week, has great difficulty arranging a vacation. The Lions camp in Northern Ontario can look after their medical services without leaving the camp. Lions Clubs in Ontario have it fully equipped as a vacation facility. These are just two examples why I am proud to be a Lions Club member. It is the emotional reward we feel when we hear from the people we assist, that is our pay. Sharing time costs nothing; the rewards are priceless. Lion Don Doyle, MJF.
