WRITER/CREATOR, SCARBOROUGH Writer Derren Litten is the award-winning creator of the long-running hit ITV series Benidorm and the BBC’s recent reboot of Are You Being Served? His latest show is Scarborough, filmed in the town in 2019 and starring Jason Manford, Stephanie Cole, Catherine Tyldesley and Claire Sweeney. Derren says: “What a blast! If viewers enjoy it half as much as we all enjoyed making it we are onto a winner – so many cast and crew are saying they have Scarborough withdrawal symptoms! That place is addictive!! “After 10 years of Benidorm I really do think Scarborough is going to surprise a few people and in very good way.”

You can even follow in the footsteps of that greatest of explorers, Captain Cook, who grew up near Whitby and served his apprenticeship in the town – it now has two replicas of his great ship, the Endeavour, to choose from.

Beach life In 2019, our beaches were repeatedly named as being among the best in the country by some of the UK’s top publications, from Boggle Hole’s fossil-laden sands coming in at number 2 in The Times’ 40 Best British Beaches to Robin Hood’s Bay, Whitby, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Scarborough all being highly rated in the country’s top 100 beaches in a report by consumer group Which?

Filey was in that select group, too, as well as being voted one of the world’s top six beaches on TripAdvisor, alongside Bondi Beach in Australia and Siesta Beach in Florida! With recommendations like that, what more can we add? Well, perhaps you’d also like to know that many of our beaches are Quality Coast assured or hold the prestigious Blue Flag, a sure sign of cleanliness and safety. Dogs are very welcome on most of our beaches – it’s a natural environment for them – but please help us to keep those awards by cleaning up after them!

There’s so much to do on the coast that it’s easy to forget that it’s just the easternmost edge of one of the UK’s most loved areas of countryside, including the magnificent North York Moors National Park, the verdant Vale of Pickering and the beautiful Howardian Hills AONB. We’re not far, either, from the sweeping Yorkshire Wolds, beloved by artists including David Hockney.

Walking on air It’s official – we should all be walking more. Shanks’s pony is good for our hearts and minds, and it doesn’t matter if you’re a serious hiker, or just enjoy a leisurely stroll. Get out there and take advantage of the many possibilities for walking in this region, for all ages and abilities. Breathe in the pine aromas of a deep green forest; marvel at the purple moorland heather, stretching as far as the eye can see; stride along a blue-and-gold beach. The North York Moors National Park and the Yorkshire Wolds both offer many guided walks, some of them themed – you can download them for free from discoveryorkshirecoast.com If you fancy making friends while you stroll, try a walking festival: there’s a major one in the National Park each May, and a smaller version in Rosedale in June.

Many national routes criss-cross the area, including part of the England Coast Path, which will be the world’s longest managed and waymarked coastal path when finished, and the Cleveland Way National Trail, which last year celebrated its 50th birthday. Find woodland trails for all abilities in Dalby Forest. And Robin Hood’s Bay is famously the finish of Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to Coast Walk: those finishing the 293km walk where hikers who have traversed three national parks traditionally dip their booted feet in the North Sea.

On your bike In 2014, Yorkshire was proud to be chosen as the location for the Grand Départ, the first stage of the world’s greatest cycling race: the Tour de France. The legacy of that amazing event inspired one of the UK’s biggest races, the UCI-approved Tour de Yorkshire, which each year brings world-famous riders to our coast and countryside.

No wonder, then, that cycling is such a big thing around here, with both road and off-road routes for all abilities right across the area, and plenty of cycle-friendly B&Bs and hotels, cycle hire options and cycling shops. The Great Yorkshire Forest at Dalby is one of the UK’s biggest trail centres and is hugely popular with mountain bikers of all ages, with everything from green family trails to black-graded XC loops. And you can download free cycle routes from the North York Moors National Park website, including the flagship Moor to Sea Cycle Network, a 150-mile trail which connects Scarborough, Whitby, Dalby Forest, Pickering and Great Ayton and all on safe forest tracks, ‘green lanes’ and minor roads.

Just up the road, the Dalby Activity Centre offers yet more adventure with paintballing, airsoft skirmish games, outdoor laser combat, a gladiator climb and a blindfold woodland team course, as well as gentler pursuits such as team tasks, tree climbing, archery, orienteering and environmental activities.

Village life The Yorkshire Coast’s many charming fishing villages are complemented by the market towns of the adjoining countryside. The main market towns in the region, - Helmsley, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Malton - and large villages such as Hunmanby, are all delightful destinations for a day out, with many independent shops, galleries and craft workshops and, of course, markets selling unique gifts and works of art. Horseplay With over 800km of horse-friendly bridleways, the North York Moors National Park is an equestrian paradise. Choose from woodlands, disused railway tracks, beaches and peaceful country lanes. And if you need a crash course or reminder of long-forgotten skills – or even need to borrow a horse or pony – there are plenty of friendly riding centres, too. If you have your own horse, you might like to try the The North York Moors and Dales Ride, a four-day, 55-mile circular route devised by the British Horse Society, through the spectacular scenery of the central and western areas of the National Park.

Reach for the stars With six Michelin-starred restaurants in the county – more than any other region outside London – you can tell how much Yorkshire folk appreciate good food. Two of those stars are local to us: the Black Swan at Oldstead, where TV chef Tommy Banks is in charge, while Andrew Pern’s Star Inn the Harbour at Whitby is sister restaurant to the Michelinstarred Star Inn at Harome, near Helmsley. Other award-winning restaurants in the area include Scarborough’s Lanterna, described by Italian newspaper La Stampa as ‘the English temple of Italian cuisine’; Sandsend’s two AA Rosette-winning Estbek House set in a beautiful Georgian townhouse; Jeremy’s in Scarborough, run by a former head chef at Marco Pierre White’s Quo Vadis; and the Hare Inn at Scawton, which holds three AA Rosettes. A recent addition to the region’s restaurant scene, The Farrier at Cayton, has made quite a splash.

Fishy business Can there be anything better than that first bite of freshly-cooked fish and chips: crisp golden batter enveloping flakes of firm white fish, alongside salty chips? Head to Whitby for the best in the country – and that’s official: Trencher’s was named Best in the UK at the 2019 Seafish National Fish and Chip Awards; a title awarded to another Whitby outlet, Fusco’s Quayside, a couple of years ago. Just up the road, The Magpie Café is famed worldwide for its fish and chips, and more. And Scarborough’s Golden Grid serves up a fish supper not to be missed.

Out to lunch

Blithe spirits

Longing for lunch? The relaxed vibe and diverse menu at Scarborough’s Eat Me Café and Mojo’s makes them hugely popular with locals; there’s a similar ambience at Rusty Shears in Whitby, with a pretty courtyard for outdoor eating in fine weather. Feline fans will love the new – wait for it! – steampunk-and-cat-themed café in Scarborough, Steampuss. And there’s great food and coffee at two new offerings in the town – Koda, and The Hideout Café.

A single malt whisky – from Yorkshire? Yes, you read that right. The Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery at Hunmanby, near Filey, recently bottled the firstever malt made in the county – and it’s a cracker! Meanwhile, the Whitby Distillery’s Whitby Gin was named Best British London Dry Gin at the 2019 World Gin Awards. Look out, too, for their suitably blood-red ‘Stoker’ edition, named for the creator of Dracula. And check out Sloemotion, near Malton – their original sloe gin has been joined by many other versions, including a hedgerow gin flavoured with elderflowers, rosehips, nettles, crabapples, sloe stones and wildflower hay.

Produce the goods Prefer to cook for yourself? You’ll need some of the great produce around here – try Scarborough’s Tree Top Press for organic fruit and veg, and home-produced cider and cordials; Botham’s of Whitby for brilliant baked good, including the famous Whitby lemon bun; and The Whitby Cheese Company for a delicious range with locally-inspired names, including the black-waxed Whitby Jet.

Food for life Who doesn’t love a good food festival – the place where you might just stumble across your new favourite flavour? Twenty-odd miles inland from Scarborough, Malton holds the title of Yorkshire’s food capital, and hosts busy monthly food markets, as well as a larger festival each spring and autumn, the latter specialising in game and seafood. There are regular food markets in Filey, a May event in Scarborough, and you can meet top chefs from across the region at the annual summer Seafest on Scarborough seafront. Look out, too, for the second Fish and Ships festival in Whitby in May – it celebrates the town’s maritime heritage, including its fishing industry.

Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre is known worldwide as the place where renowned playwright Alan Ayckbourn premieres his latest play each summer; the town centre venue is open all year, with a packed programme of shows, films, music and more.

History is everywhere on the Yorkshire Coast – you’ll just bump into it wherever you go. Start by climbing the 199 steps to Whitby Abbey, or visiting the castle at Scarborough followed by, less than five minutes’ walk away, the grave of writer Anne Brontë – 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of her birth.

Comedy and music stars tread the boards at the seafront Spa in Scarborough; its sister theatre in Whitby, the Pavilion, stages a diverse programme ranging from amateur dramatics to the big names through the year. Look out, too, for a wide range of theatrical events at Scarborough’s YMCA Theatre and Filey’s Evron Centre.

State of the art Scarborough Art Gallery hosts regularly changing exhibitions and also has an important permanent collection, including works by Lord Leighton, who was born in the town, and John Atkinson Grimshaw.

Music to your ears Over the past few years, Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre has become one of the UK’s best live music venues, with a wide-ranging programme: Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears, Lewis Capaldi, Biffy Clyro, Lionel Ritchie and Alfie Boe are recently headliners, while for 2020 the venue will welcome Little Mix, Snow Patrol, McFly and Marc Almond amongst others. Forest Live brings outdoor music to Dalby Forest, including Paul Weller, Rick Astley and Elbow in the last two years. Filey and Whitby have highly regarded annual folk festivals, and Whitby’s Musicport is the UK’s biggest indoor annual world music festival. Scarborough Spa’s springtime Secret Blues Festival and autumn Jazz Festival draw music-lovers from across the country. And, of course, there’s loads of live music to choose from at the many pubs and clubs in the area. Prefer your music classical? Scarborough’s famous Spa Sun Court is home to the last remaining professional seaside orchestra. Check out the North York Moors Chamber Music Festival in August – a little gem that brings classical musicians from across the world to play in churches across the North York Moors.

Whitby’s Pannett Art Gallery is home to the only comprehensive public display of paintings by the Staithes Group of artists, whose number included Dame Laura and Harold Knight. They inspired the annual Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage, an autumn event which sees the village transformed into one big art gallery, with artists taking over shops and private homes.

In this less-than-50-mile stretch of coast, you’ll find mind-expanding tales of medieval monks and PreRaphaelites painters, jet workers and smugglers, Royalists and Parliamentarians, and so much more.

Night at the museum Walk along the Yorkshire Coast and you walk with dinosaurs – fossils are common. Both Scarborough’s Rotunda, one of the world’s first purpose-built museums, and Whitby Museum have superb collections. Visit the Captain Cook Memorial Museum in Grape Lane in Whitby and you’ll walk in the footsteps of the famous explorer – he lodged there while an apprentice in the town in the 1740s. Intriguing Eden Camp near Malton, which covers British military and social history, is an exhibit in its own right – it was once a PoW camp. And they may be small, but Scarborough’s Maritime Heritage Centre and Filey Museum both pack a punch for fans of maritime history.

Born and brought up near Spurn Point, Emma Stothard has spent most of her adult life living and working in Whitby. Her woven sculptures, using materials including willow, and bronze, galvanized steel and sterling silver wire, can be found in the gardens of stately homes, galleries and homes worldwide including The Royal Gardens at Highgrove, the private gardens of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall. She is a regular exhibitor at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, including in the prize-winning Welcome to Yorkshire gardens and in Jardin Blanc, the hospitality area created by Michelin-starred chef Raymond Blanc. Emma’s work can be seen each year at the annual Staithes Festival of Arts and Heritage. Emma says: “The stunning landscapes and wildlife of the countryside around Whitby are a constant inspiration for me – I love to spot animals and birds when I’m out and about walking my dog, Lily.” In 2020, Emma is creating an exciting new sculpture trail for Whitby, celebrating the rich history of the town’s fishing industry.

The original, and still the best Scarborough is where the seaside holiday first began – it’s been attracting visitors since the 1600s, when one Mrs Farrer first discovered the healing potential of the Spa waters. Fast-forward 400 years, and people are still flocking to Scarborough all year round. Its two Quality Coast Awardwinning beaches offer very different experiences, the glitz of the vibrant South Bay with its noisy amusement arcades, vibrant fun fairs and thrilling speedboat rides contrasting with the North Bay’s calmer, more nostalgic, pleasures. And on both beaches you can experience the traditional joys of donkey rides, fish and chips, and brilliantly coloured chalets – the sorbet shades of those on the North Bay make them among the most photographed in the country. Between the two busy bays towers the Castle Headland, crowned by a medieval castle. Climb the steps to the viewing platform up there for remarkable views of both bays and far beyond, or walk from one to the other – you might even spot a porpoise or two!

Scarborough is home to an exceptionally lively cultural scene, too – enjoy shows at the historic seafront Spa complex, the natural amphitheatre of the 8,000seat Open Air Theatre and the world-renowned Stephen Joseph Theatre. The unique circular Rotunda museum, with its exquisite interior, is recognised as an internationally important venue. And there are plenty of galleries and music venues, too, with regularly changing programmes of events.

FILEY Crescent Gardens Bandstand

Fabulous Filey In 2019, Filey was named as one of the 10 best beaches in the UK in the annual TripAdvisor Traveller’s Choice Awards, just a year after the Sunday Times voted it best beach in the country. No wonder Filey’s residents are so proud of their five-mile sweep of unspoiled sands. So huge that no matter how busy it gets it’s never crowded, the family-friendly beach is also popular yearround with dog walkers. The famous Brigg, a spine of rocks snaking out into the sea, is, legend has it, the backbone of a drowned dragon. Check the tide times before you explore the miniature marine worlds of its rock pools, then head up the paths to the clifftop Country Park, which offers unparalleled views plus lovely walks, mini golf and a children’s play area. The town’s lifeboat station is located at the top of the Coble Landing (that’s ‘coble’, referencing the traditional Filey fishing boats, rather than the cobbles underfoot), a slipway fringed by picturesque fishing boats and welcoming cafés and kiosks. From there it’s an easy walk to the promenade that edges the beach, with its naturethemed sculpture trail.

Filey’s epic golden crescent of a beach has had a stonking couple of years when it comes to national awards – and the peaceful little town is an ideal base from which to discover the Yorkshire Coast, the Wolds and the countryside. Filey Bay Beach

The pretty bandstand in the Crescent Gardens is home to a series of brass and silver band concerts throughout the summer, while Glen Gardens has a boating lake and play park for younger members of the family. In association with Seafish, which supports the UK seafood industry, the Whitby Fish and Ships Festival in May guarantees a whale of a time over a weekend of lively events based around the history of fishing and its importance to our national cuisine. Expect celebrity chefs, exhibitions, workshops, demos by local fishermen showing off their impressive skills, a seafood trail, and more.

You can still find a few fine working examples of Filey’s distinctive fishing boat, the coble, reminiscent of Viking longboats, on the Coble Landing slipway which leads into the sea. And find out more about Filey’s rich maritime past at the town’s delightful museum, which pays the local town council one devil’s toenail, otherwise knowns as a Gryphaea fossil, for its annual upkeep.

Smuggle up

Explorers and whalers

Climb the steep streets of Robin Hood’s Bay to unlock the secrets of its past as the busiest smuggling community on the Yorkshire coast. Contraband including such prized items as tea, gin, rum, brandy and tobacco were smuggled into the county from the continent through its boltholes and hidden passages.

Whitby’s most famous son, Captain James Cook (or rather, his statue) surveys the town from its towering West Cliff, next to the famous Whalebone Arch. Born at Marton, near Middlesbrough, as a youth he was a draper’s apprentice in Staithes and a trainee with a Whitby shipping firm. Find out more about him and

his exploits at The Captain Cook and Staithes Heritage Centre in Staithes, and the Captain Cook Memorial Museum on Whitby’s Grape Lane, in the house where he once lodged. And there’s plenty more seafaring memorabilia at the beautiful Whitby Museum including from the 19th century whaling industry.

All aboard Visit Scarborough’s Maritime Heritage Centre, just up the hill from the seafront, for a real insight into a community which has always earned its living from the sea. There are still plenty of working fishing boats in the harbour alongside the pleasure craft. And take a stroll along the 18th century Vincent Pier to the lighthouse – it was shelled when German battlecruisers attacked Scarborough in November 1914, causing the first British civilian deaths of World War I.

The call of the sea is a powerful one for our island nation – we all feel it at some point…

Sealed with a kiss Seals hold a special place in all our hearts, and there are plenty of opportunities to spot them off our coast. They pop their heads up fairly regularly in the harbours at Scarborough and Whitby – but probably the best views are to be had at Ravenscar, where there are colonies of both common and grey seals. The super-cute common seal pups can be seen in June and July, the grey in November – but for both your own safety and theirs, please respect them and keep your distance, and your dog on its lead, ideally taking a boat trip from Whitby for the best views.

Whale of a time Spectacular humpback, minke, sei, fin and pilot whales are often spotted off our shores, as are several species of porpoise and dolphin. Yorkshire Coast Nature and Three Sisters Sea

Trips run whale-watching cruises out of Staithes, or join a Whitby Whale Watching trip into the blue yonder.

Birds and stars The Yorkshire Coast is a mecca for bird-watchers. Filey’s rocky peninsula the Brigg, is an SSSI and a haven for migrating birds in the autumn. Nearby, Filey Dams Nature Reserve is a freshwater marsh cared for by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust – look out for birds, small mammals, plants, insects and amphibians, including great crested newts in nationally important numbers. And when darkness falls, keep looking up. The clear skies and low light pollution levels of the North York Moors make it one of the best places in the country for stargazing. The National Park’s dazzling Dark Skies Festival in February is getting bigger and better every year.

Purple splendour It’s a sight to behold – the moorland in the North York Moors National Park turns pinky-purple in late summer and early autumn when the heather blooms. You might want to check out some local heather honey, too.

Natural habitat At the north-eastern border of the North York Moors, near Scarborough, you enter the top of the famous Yorkshire Nature Triangle. The National Centre for Birds of Prey at Helmsley, a few miles inland, is home to the largest collection of raptors in the north of England. Or visit the gallery of world famous wildlife artist, photographer and naturalist Robert Fuller at his studio in Thixendale, near Malton.

For the last five years, a stage of the Tour de Yorkshire, the country’s second biggest pro cycling race, has included the Yorkshire Coast. Food is on our minds this month, with the Scarborough Food & Drink Festival and Whitby’s Fish and Ships Festival. Overeaten? Walk it off in the North York Moors National Park’s WalkFest. Over 150 musical acts descend on Filey for the annual Folk Festival, now in its 17th year; the town also hosts a Steampunk Seaside Spectacular in May.

Scarborough’s Seafest celebrates the town’s maritime history and heritage with a weekend of food, music, street theatre, and more. Oliver’s Mount, overlooking the town, is the venue for two very different cycling festivals - Scarborough Cycling Festival celebrates pedal power, while the Barry Sheene Road Race Festival attracts top class international road racers to the circuit known as the ‘miniature TT by the seaside’. The region hosts its own family music festival, Staxtonbury. Filey remembers its mythological dragon with the Festival of Filey: Return of the Dragon. The North York Moors National Park presents no less than three major festivals: ParkFest, National Parks Week and MoorsFest.

The Esk Valley route to Whitby operates from Middlesbrough, whilst the Yorkshire Wolds Coast Line runs from Hull to Filey and Scarborough as well as several other local stations in the area.

By road The A1 connects to the coastal area via the A64 at York and the A170 at Thirsk. The A165 runs from Hull to Scarborough. Whitby can be accessed from Scarborough via the A171 and a motorway connection can be made just north of Middlesbrough.

By bus/coach National Express coach routes stop at Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Thirsk and York with onward connections to local destinations (www.nationalexpress.com). Bus operators National Express, Arriva, East Yorkshire and Coastliner operate all year round throughout the area with connections into Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Malton and Thirsk.

By air The nearest airports are Leeds Bradford, Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheﬃeld, Durham Tees Valley, Humberside and Newcastle. Train and bus connections can be made from these airports to the area. Slightly further away is Manchester Airport which is served by direct rail connections into Malton, Scarborough, Thirsk and York. Car hire is readily available in Scarborough and Malton.
